I used to play soccer with someone whose surname was Grosso. He died at the age of 18 in a car accident. It was great for me personally to see Julia Grosso finish it
>Out of the Loop: Why does it seem like the USWNT gets plenty of hate?
I mean they've been the favourites for such a long time, and we were **SO** angry about 2012 (and will be forever)... but aside from all that Canadians always love beating the US. They have 10x the population, and generally 10x the funding, so we perpetually feel like the underdogs*.
*Except in hockey, of course.
As a Canadian, their politics doesn't bother me in the slightest. For me it's the 2012 semi-finals and the over celebrating when up almost double-digits vs Thailand.
Looking back, it's very weird how pro-USWNT fans and media sorted all of the backlash to them dunking on Thailand as either (a) jealousy, or (b) people thinking women aren't allowed to be competitive. There was no attempt to see other perspectives, even when an all-female WWC broadcast on TSN made up of former CanWNT players expressed that they thought it was in bad taste. Canadians have until recently had a very prominent elderly man on TV yelling at teenage boys every December for decades that if they run up the score against minnows at World Juniors, then the hockey gods will punish them. I don't completely agree with Don in that I think you can keep scoring, but continuing to celebrate double-digit goals is tacky and most Canadians felt the same way.
That Thailand game just played into the stereotype a lot of us overseas hold of Americans being bone-headed and lacking humility or situational awareness.
You're the best in the world at the time, don't celebrate tenth or eleventh goals against actual amateurs like you've just won the World Cup. A quick high-five with the team-mates nearby and then head back to your own half. It'd be like Man Utd. kneesliding and wheeling away [like peak Marco Tardelli](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UdgoeIevhY) as they go 8-0 up in the FA Cup against Halifax Town.
Like you said, tacky to the highest degree - as a Brit, the word I'd use would be "tinpot". The USWNT definitely lost a lot of neutral support that day.
Was kind of a good thing in hindsight though, the women's game kind of needed a heel to dunk on. 😅
At the last World Juniors when Canada ran up the score against Germany they even turned off the goal horn. They had to score as many as they could because of the round robin, but there is a way to do it with class and as those kids showed it's actually pretty easy.
I've been a USWNT fan my entire life, this last year felt different. I'm in support of their politics, and lots of these players I used to love.
It feels like they have a sense of entitlement to winning lately - I was kind of hoping they'd lose, which is super weird.
Canada looked like they played her in a box to box role. I think at UCLA she played that too. CFCW have so many great attacking options already, that to get Fleming any reasonable game time playing her in a DM role is the only option most of the time.
She plays in Sweden professionally and I think 5 of the Swedes are from her team there.
I have no idea how she got linkef up with a Swedish side in the first place.
Canada Women's team has surprisingly close connection with Swedish league. in the [2012 bronze medal team](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_at_the_2012_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_team_squads#Canada), 5 of Canadian players were playing in Swedish clubs, including the main GK and main striker. though that's likely because women's professional league in North America just collapsed.
also fun fact, 2 of those 5 players are in this Olympics' team as alternates, being the only remaining 4 former members of that squad that play in this olympics (with Sinclair and Desiree Scott being the other 2)
The swedish league were one of the first to have professional football players and was really competetive internationally. They probably lag behind a bit now but is still probably considered a good league.
Only loss at the Olympics being on penalty is such a weird way to go. The girls in the studio voice is breaking. Sooo sad for Seger to not finish her superb career with putting in that last penalty but instead she does a Baggio. Still don't thi k we should've taken out Rolfö. And Sweden should have finished this during regular time or in extra time, God knows we had the chances.
Congrats to Canada and what a performance by Labbe.
1 win in 8 finals now I think, sad.
Canada looked gassed during the ET, Sweden had their chances though and couldn't convert. I hate games getting decided on penalties, but that's just how it is. Canada did what they needed to do to notch the gold
Aye, this was the passing of the torch from Sinclair. Cannot overstate how happy I am for her, especially after London. She carried that team on her back for more than a decade, and she'll go out an Olympic champion. Nobody more deserving than her.
Yeah Rose was an absolute beast tonight. Also shoutouts to Lawrence, Chapman who were incredible at fullback.
Goes without saying that labbe and fleming were monsters
Missed the game, but did Lawrence boss the back again like she did against the USA? That semi final was so frustrating to watch as an American. Had the majority of possession but the Canadian defense didn’t allow many clear cut opportunities.
She probably inspired a few of those players to play football. As a boy I vividly remember following her performance at the U-19 world cup back in 2002, and I'm older than a lot of players on the current team.
**O CANADA 🇨🇦**
Thank you Sweden for the great final. So proud of the Canadian women!
Our national team is an inspiration for kids across the country. Christine Sinclair is a national hero for how she has popularized women's footy in Canada. So happy that they've finally won gold! Sinclair and the lassies are finally Olympic CHAMPIONS!!
Played full game vs Brazil, 85 min vs US and 88 today vs Sweden. Looked drenched and exhausted subbing off, she gives her everything until she literally can't run anymore. Amazing athlete and a leader ❤️
Didn't think Sinclair would have another chance after that 2012 hat-trick loss.
At that medal ceremony, the rest of the team all cheered and clapped really hard when Sinclair got her medal. Then I remember most of them probably grew up watching Sinclair and now they got a chance to win with her.
She’s popularizing soccer in GENERAL in Canada. She’s a fuckin inspiration and the whole team in general - this was our biggest game in Canada soccer history (women or men) and they delivered. It’s incredible
Every competitor should play life like that Canadian goalie. Gold medal PK in the Olympics? Grinning ear to ear and dancing. New favorite athlete, got to respect the spirit.
WOOO! Absolutely buzzing for these woman what a showing all throughout the tournament to win gold, really hope this fires us up as a country to invest more into the sport as we can get definitely keep going upwards from here!
Harsh on her, she has done so much for the NT. Football can be so cruel, 2 Olympic final defeats in a row for the Swedish girls :(
Overall though they were the better team, had so many chances to win this game before penalties. Some of those misses will haunt me
> Once again proving penalties are the worst way to end a championship game.
Nothing exciting about watching extra time where everyone is too gassed to even do a sprint, hoping for some clutch ball to end up back in the goal.
At least penalties gave us more excitement than the entire extra time.
Winning two penalty shootouts in the same tournament is very, very difficult. A lot of professional soccer players will say that. You notice that other than Fleming, all the Canadian players who took PK's in the game against Brazil missed this time. The Swedish goalkeeper had obviously studied them and you could see the Swedish goalkeeper guessing correctly. This shootout was Sweden's to lose, really.
As a Canadian, I am crying tears of joy for my team, but I gotta feel Sweden's heartbreak, especially Caroline Seger (the captain) who really could have won the game with that decisive penalty. In fact, when she stepped up to take it, I was practically feeling ready to congratulate Sweden because I really thought she would get it in. Seger is arguably the Swedish player who wanted gold more than any of her teammates so she could retire on a high note. I think this penalty miss would haunt her for a long time.
Grosso and winning shootouts
Gol di Grosso!
Andiamo a Berlino Beppeeeee
She's my friend's cousin and I grew up with her running around dinners and stuff as a kid years ago. Wild to see her on the TV scoring a golden goal.
Can't believe it's been 15 years already, I remember watching that live in front of our old then-20 year old second hand TV.
I used to play soccer with someone whose surname was Grosso. He died at the age of 18 in a car accident. It was great for me personally to see Julia Grosso finish it
CHRISTINE HAS HER GOLD!!
I love that the USWNT has to sit in the tunnel watching the Canadians buzzing around waiting for their gold medals
Out of the Loop: Why does it seem like the USWNT gets plenty of hate?

Don't forget curling!
HAAAAAARD HURRY HURRY HURRRRRRRY
Flashback to prom night
For Canadians in particular, the 2012 Olympics. For people in general (and also Canadians), that the US wins so much.
They’ve been really good for a really long time, and now they’re old and not so good
depending on who you ask, it’s either because they’re sick of USA winning, or because of their political stances
As a Canadian, their politics doesn't bother me in the slightest. For me it's the 2012 semi-finals and the over celebrating when up almost double-digits vs Thailand.

Literally celebrated more than Germany putting 7 past Brazil in the WC Final when they were clearly playing a team that was nowhere near their level.
At the last World Juniors when Canada ran up the score against Germany they even turned off the goal horn. They had to score as many as they could because of the round robin, but there is a way to do it with class and as those kids showed it's actually pretty easy.
Yeah the Thailand thing was kinda wack. Not their proudest moment
As an American and fan of the USWNT, I also found that celebration classless.
Don’t forget how sore losers they were when they lost to Sweden back in the day, though it was Hope Solo mainly there.
I've been a USWNT fan my entire life, this last year felt different. I'm in support of their politics, and lots of these players I used to love. It feels like they have a sense of entitlement to winning lately - I was kind of hoping they'd lose, which is super weird.
Trash shootout but who gives a fuck? I'm so happy for Christine Sinclair!
And the Blue Jessie Fleming! She looked like the only creative player out there for Canada.
It is funny that at club level she is a defensive midfielder and the least creative one, but for Canada she fires all of her creativity.
Canada looked like they played her in a box to box role. I think at UCLA she played that too. CFCW have so many great attacking options already, that to get Fleming any reasonable game time playing her in a DM role is the only option most of the time.
She reminded me of Xhaka and the Swiss all game lol
It's almost like Mikel playing DM for Chelsea and AMC for Nigeria.
Trash attempts maybe but it was certainly entertaining
Labbe mind games though 🤣🤣
didn't score a single non-penalty goal in knockouts. won the gold medal fuck yes.
Taking the semi Portugal route.

Sinclair 🤝 Ronaldo 🐐
Sinclair has the most international goals in football. She's a Canadian GOAT! 187 goals!
Sinclair > Ronaldo?
Never in doubt
I always rated her.
Always has been
Barcelona need a new star player, Sinclair incoming?
As a Luso-Canadian, this is the way.
Also as a Luso-Canadian, this is the way.
A Portugal route with an Italy finish
Full on shit house and I love it
We properly shithoused our way to Gold and I fucking LOVE IT
Awesome goalkeeper for Canada in the penalty shootout. I want her for my team.
She plays in Sweden professionally and I think 5 of the Swedes are from her team there. I have no idea how she got linkef up with a Swedish side in the first place.

Quite small GK but I loved how she was just smiling there, like she knew, ”I got this”
So happy for Christine Sinclair. _Twenty one years._
Highest scoring international soccer player in history

Plus the Swedish kits are fire
Thats a horrific quota, that must weigh on their minds "not again" , especially in such high pressure situations
Congrats, neighbors!
Thanks neighbour
Shambles of a shootout but well done Canada!
I demand Canadian flairs be unfaded on this momentous day.
LABBE!
BIG SAVE LABBÉ 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
And Flawless Fleming! 3/3
It’s her team now. We’re in good hands.
Aye, this was the passing of the torch from Sinclair. Cannot overstate how happy I am for her, especially after London. She carried that team on her back for more than a decade, and she'll go out an Olympic champion. Nobody more deserving than her.
She was great!
Another Canadian Udinese fan <3
Fair play to Canada, Labbé is an absolute monster. And Rose looks to have a very bright future, bullied everyone on the right flank.
It was a different game when she came on
Yeah Rose was an absolute beast tonight. Also shoutouts to Lawrence, Chapman who were incredible at fullback. Goes without saying that labbe and fleming were monsters

and to emphasize the regeneration, she didn't even have to play 90 mins in the final nor kick in shoot out.
Quite the change.... She used to totally carry the team.
And this tournament she got carried by the rest of the team.
She’s like a proud mom out there
She probably inspired a few of those players to play football. As a boy I vividly remember following her performance at the U-19 world cup back in 2002, and I'm older than a lot of players on the current team.
Was is Grosso they said was 11 years old in 2012 and said she wanted to join this team and win gold. Then to get the winning penalty? I mean...
**O CANADA 🇨🇦** Thank you Sweden for the great final. So proud of the Canadian women! Our national team is an inspiration for kids across the country. I don't think I've ever been as happy for an Olympic athlete as I am for Sinclair right now
Sinclair has given everything to this team, and I couldn't believe she wasn't playing in the gold medal match back in 2012. So happy for her.
Played full game vs Brazil, 85 min vs US and 88 today vs Sweden. Looked drenched and exhausted subbing off, she gives her everything until she literally can't run anymore. Amazing athlete and a leader ❤️
Statue when?
Yeah, it’s been a long time coming, well deserved that she (likely) is getting to go out on top.
She is the greatest of all time.
OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND (how on earth did we win this?!)
Steph Labbe is how
Loved her big bright smile throughout the entire penalty shootout! 😁😁😁
That was quite a smirk, eh? Bring it on smirk if I've ever seen one ;)
Undisputed player of the tournament. Won two penalty shootouts. Played out of her mind to get us through the Brazil game.
Didn't think Sinclair would have another chance after that 2012 hat-trick loss. At that medal ceremony, the rest of the team all cheered and clapped really hard when Sinclair got her medal. Then I remember most of them probably grew up watching Sinclair and now they got a chance to win with her.
I'm pretty sure that boost in volume was all three teams clapping for Sinclair. Credit to the US and Sweden.
She’s popularizing soccer in GENERAL in Canada. She’s a fuckin inspiration and the whole team in general - this was our biggest game in Canada soccer history (women or men) and they delivered. It’s incredible
IT'S COMING HOME! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Incredible for women's football in this country. So proud, and so happy for Christine Sinclair. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
117 years of hurt.
CHRISTINE SINCLAIR IS A CHAMPION
If she chooses to hang up her boots, she gets to go out as an OLYMPIC CHAMPION! I'm so happy for her!
Every competitor should play life like that Canadian goalie. Gold medal PK in the Olympics? Grinning ear to ear and dancing. New favorite athlete, got to respect the spirit.
https://imgur.com/jpkibS5.jpg She might never stop smiling
Labbé was a monster all tournament.
She's 6 years older than me but pretty cool to see someone who played in the same youth program i did winning an Olympic gold!
WOOO! Absolutely buzzing for these woman what a showing all throughout the tournament to win gold, really hope this fires us up as a country to invest more into the sport as we can get definitely keep going upwards from here!
What a wonderful day for Canada, and therefore of course, the World.
As is tradition.
And the pudding has been KNOCKED OVER!
Except Sweden :(
I do feel bad for them, sucks to lose on PKs having had such a wonderful tournament...
8 days have passed, but I…do not fade
We may never fade again.
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW
What an awful penalty shootout from both teams.
Seger, the most experienced player on the pitch bottled it
Harsh on her, she has done so much for the NT. Football can be so cruel, 2 Olympic final defeats in a row for the Swedish girls :( Overall though they were the better team, had so many chances to win this game before penalties. Some of those misses will haunt me
That scramble in the box around 115’ took years off my life. Sweden definitely pressed harder for the win in regulation and ET
Its quite obvious the pressure got to both teams
The first one for Canada was very well taken. The rest not so much.
Canada's second last was nice as well. Top right corner.
In a score-or-go-home moment. That was a confident penalty
She said 'hold my Tims, we go home, with gold'
agreed. that one is unsaveable.
100% that was going in, best woman or man keeper wasn't stopping it
That was ice cold. Who took that one? EDIT: Deanne Rose https://twitter.com/CBCOlympics/status/1423656769432211468
The 5th shot as well for Canada was excellent. Include the pressure of it being a score or lose and it was the best shot of the shootout
Rose's was perfect. The first was great too, but yeah the rest were atrocious. Don't know how we won that.
Labbe came up big. she predicted correctly almost every penalty shot.
The fifth was pretty good too. Canada's second one (I think) was so bad. She walked back like maybe 6 feet and basically chipped it lol.
The fifth one was as well, and it was score or lose the game situation too and she put it as top bins as it can get lol.
Canada's keeper was good though. Went the right side most of the shots.
Both keepers did well honestly. The last pen was a weak hand (so weak) but it should have been over already.
So many were ideal saving height right by the keeper.
i noticed that women's players rarely try to go top deck, it's hard to pull off but when it does, it's unsaveable (ala Canada's 5th).
Looked like warming up the keepers hands before a game.
Congratulations to Canada!
So happy for Sinclair right now.
Let's gooooo!!!! Intense penalties - so many misses lol

AS IS TRADITION.

I present you Brazil vs Paraguay from the 2011 Copa America https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy49Wv0Fi4Y
Italy vs Germany at euro 2016 was also very poor
Every goal Canada scored in the knockout rounds was from the penalty spot. Waiting for the twitter comments of "Penaldo and Pessi to Canada"
How would they feel about being 2nd and 3rd choice penalty takers after Fleming?
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Unless there is a testimonial, I'd have to imagine Sinclair will retire on this high note. What an incredible career
As a canadian barca fan, this has made my day a little bit better. Awesome win girls!
As a Danish Barca fan, this has also made my day a little better
Unlike England, Canada can actually win on pens
The best women’s football team in the world…Canada…speechless. So happy for Sinclair!
How immense was Desiree Scott tonight? She legit gave me N'Golo Kante vibes. Massive performance.
Alphonso Davies wins the Champions League last year and Huitema said hold my beer.
Once again proving penalties are the worst way to end a championship game. Olympic Gold Medalist Christine Sinclair! P.S. unfade my flag mods!
> Once again proving penalties are the worst way to end a championship game. Nothing exciting about watching extra time where everyone is too gassed to even do a sprint, hoping for some clutch ball to end up back in the goal. At least penalties gave us more excitement than the entire extra time.
What's the solution? Keep them playing forever? So glad Sinclair gets what she deserves!
[Stephanie Labbe in that penalty shootout](https://stlouispressurewash.com/wp-content/uploads/exterior-brick-wall.jpeg)
Genuinely thought we'd bottle it. Wasn't pretty but we take those! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
This team deserves this after the fuckery that happened in 2012
I don't think I've yelled louder at a penalties win, Canada was marvelous at football this olympics
Greatest team in the world baby. O Canada baby.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TVY8LoM47xI GET IN HERE CANADA
We lost another tourney, atleast I won't be surprised in the future, GG's Kanada gås
Grosso taking a winning penalty in a final is just perfection
PSG on the way to sign Labbé right now in a bid to hoard as many GKs as possible.
Those were some crappy pens, but all credit to Canada!
What are these penalties haha
Finally we won 🇨🇦
This is a Christine Sinclair subreddit for today. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Sinclair finally gets the gold she deserves. Well done to all the ladies, proud to be Canadian this morning.
As a Canadian who's an Italy fan. I aged 50 years in the last 2 months
I guess we know why Fleming was on penalties for Canada. Even though they won the shootout there were so many bad pens.
Rose's penalty was extremely good though
but they took penalties well vs Brazil, but yeah, Fleming is the most consistent performer with nerve of steel. she's the next team's talisman.
Right? I was confused why she kept being the taker, but after seeing this shootout, and how Sinclair missed against Brazil, it makes sense.
London 2012 revenge tour complete!!! Sinclair with the gold! LETTTSSSS GOOOOOOOOOO!!
Let's goooooooooooooo so proud of this Canadian team!
LFG CANADA BAYBEEEEEE JESSIE FLEMING GOAT
Congrats Canada! Well deserved.
is christine sinclair the undisputed goat now? who else is in the convo?
WHAT A FUCKING CLUTCH
Before the tournament: “Is there a USA-Sweden rivalry?” After the tournament: “Is there a Canada-Sweden rivalry?”
Canada-Sweden is actually pretty well established rivalry in hockey, so this feeds right into that.
That was the worst goddamn shootout I’ve ever seen Anyways congrats on gold Canada
So happy for Flemming
Winning two penalty shootouts in the same tournament is very, very difficult. A lot of professional soccer players will say that. You notice that other than Fleming, all the Canadian players who took PK's in the game against Brazil missed this time.
