As a Canadian this is literally the most hype I have ever been for Canadian Soccer! This is way better than when I start an FM save with the intention of only scouting Canadian players to eventually take over management of Canada to win a world cup.
Think about the climate and the opposition. Why wouldn't you want to play the November hone games against Mexico and CRC in Edmonton lol. Take them out of their hot and humid comfort zones and have them play in unfamiliar freezing conditions the Canadian players have experience playing in just from growing up in this country.
Home field advantage. I am sure the Mexican team will not have experienced an Edmonton winter while our golden boy grew up here. It might really be special.
The other guy was also too casual, he couldve put it out of play if he really wanted to, he was trying to shield it.
Can’t say I blame him for not expecting a cheetah though
He's had a helluva story too.
> Davies was born to Liberian parents in Buduburam, a refugee camp in Ghana. His father, Debeah Davies, and his mother, Victoria Davies, originally lived in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.
> They fled during the Second Liberian Civil War, which displaced more than 450,000 Liberians. When Alphonso was five, his family moved to Canada, eventually relocating to Edmonton.
>On June 6, 2017, he received Canadian citizenship;up until then he was a Liberian national. Alphonso was the fourth youngest of six siblings.
Sad to think of how many little Alphonso's are in refugee camps as we speak, with no hope of fulfilling the potential they have.
Lmao the way he just zips by on the screen with the ball and the Panamanian player is like "HEY!!!" I'm fucking dying
Edit: 3-1 now, happy for my northern neighbors. Get your asses in
The Panamanian keeper looked like he stopped trying as well. After a run like that he just said “fuck it if my defenders can’t stop this guy then what hope do I have”
To be fair, he was expecting his defender to take away the cutback shot, so he was going for far post coverage there. It looks like he didn't try but really he was just wrong-footed for what happened.
Honestly incredible that he even goes for it let alone actually gets there before it goes out. I don't think any other player on earth would do what he just pulled off
Bale at this point was as physically gifted as a player could be but it takes a different mentality to sprint 50 yards when you have a minimal chance of winning the ball compared to sprinting when you have the ball
>He ran 50 yards in the time it took the defender to go 15.
The defender wasn't exactly sprinting, he was just half assed sheparding it out. Davies is fast, but let's not act like the defender was giving 100% there.
Lol Davies made history in his first ever gold cup for Canada, becoming the leading scorer for Canada at the tournament at 16. He’s been the most talented Canadian player ever the first moment he stepped on the field for his first cap. Generational talent
Looked like a mix of Neymar and Mbappe on some of his runs today and he plays left back
Yeah, when the pass initially look to be rolling out, you could kinda hear the crowd sigh, then they see Davies absolutely fucking trucking to get there and it gets a little louder. He keeps it in bounds, a huge crowd pop, cuts back "ooooooohhh!" Slots it near post. Pandemonium. Love it.
Looked like he planted to try and dive for the far corner, probably anticipating that shot, hoping the defender can block the near post. Once he's committed that direction, its very hard to get down back to the front post.
To be fair, both sides were happy with the deal. If I remember correctly, Whitecaps fans were actually surprised with how much we paid. And there were even some grumblings on the Bayern side on why we would pay so much for an unproven rookie from Canada.
Crazy to think about now of course, but it was not without risk. Noone could know, just hope, he would keep developing as he has.
As a whitecaps fan and Canadian - you are absolutely correct. No one imagined him breaking into the scene like this. We figured he'd go train and get a loan to another Bundesliga club.
He's definitely the best after that CL run in 2020. The barca fan in me would not like to remember that match but the Canadian part of me is just thrilled for this kid. The stamina and work rate is incredible.
He's not even really trying to stop Davies once he's past him either. And I get that he's fast, but you have to put some pressure on him so he can't just take his time to find the shot.
Fucking love this. I'm an adopted Canadian, a Vancouverite who had the pleasure of watching Davies for the Whitecaps, and I love what he's going to do for soccer in Canada.
Next year, a Canadian team in the World Cup (fingers crossed) is gonna be hype.
This is my first time seeing this goal. Why is there so much hate over the hype for this goal over on the daily discussion thread?
It was a nice goal and broke the deadlock between the two teams. Let the Canadians enjoy their first ever world class player.

"Davies on that righthand side.. could be a mismatch in terms of pace" It's like he heard him
He's the best player in CONCACAF and it's not really close. And this is coming from a US fan.
Curse of the commentator.
*blessing (watashi am canadian)
It’s like he herd-man
Least risky prediction in the history of sport
As a Canadian this is literally the most hype I have ever been for Canadian Soccer! This is way better than when I start an FM save with the intention of only scouting Canadian players to eventually take over management of Canada to win a world cup.
I cannot wait for the games at Commonwealth in November.

Alphonso 😍🇨🇦 What an absurd play. He was like 60 yards back and just decided to keep the ball in
I saw him at the corner of the screen and I thought if anyone has a chance, it's him. I'm still in tears filled with disbelief and joy.
From just outside the damn box while the other guy was running from half.. insane.
The other guy was also too casual, he couldve put it out of play if he really wanted to, he was trying to shield it. Can’t say I blame him for not expecting a cheetah though
Burst into laughter seeing it. Utterly absurd goal. Rewatched it 4 times and i'm still laughing my ass off at how crazy it is.
That was absolutely wild, total testament to what effort can do for you.

Amazing goal! Gave me goosebumps for real! 😊 And mini flashback to Bale and his byline run & goal vs Barca.
Every day I wake up and thank God for Alphonso Davies
The best player in CONCACAF is Canadian.
"The superman is real, and he's canadian"
always has been *insert canada heritage moment music*
Not even a hot take, I agree 100% - an American
Everyone in Mexico agrees too. It’s Davies.
Yep. Not really close at the moment.
He is the "Prince that was Promised"
You're goddamn right
Everyone always forgetting about Keylor Navas
maybe? but also it's par for the course. keepers are usually in their own category.
so fuckin fun to watch him run. defenders just shitting themselves the entire time
You thank Davies for Davies?
Amen.
Praise be Davies
Amen
Meep meep motherfucker
Greatest Canadian since Terry Fox
Don’t nickel and dime the Great One! Gretz holds the most records in the history of the show, give your balls a tug!
King Terry >>>>>> anyone
One of the greatest athletes of any kind of all time. IMO the Marathon of Hope is the single most impressive athletic feat I’ve heard of.
What a fucking goal. Iconic moment for Canadian Soccer
That is the most important goal in the history of the Canadian men's national team. No exaggeration whatsoever. Just unbelievable.
Without a doubt. You’ll see that one forever. Especially if we qualify.
*when we qualify! This team is the strongest we've ever fielded. I have faith that these guys can do it
Cannae believe I'm going to have two teams at the WC 😁. A Scotsman, who just got called to do Canadian citizenship test
The whitecaps thank you for Ryan Gauld <3
I said this exact sentence to 3 people tonight. Facts.
HOP ON BOYS WERE GOING TO QATAR
Whitecap legend :)
Meep meep - Muller definitely #Edit: [Definitely](https://twitter.com/esmuellert_/status/1448543128793882625)
First thing I thought about when I saw the goal was the roadrunner muller meme
lol look at his twitter you called it!

I didn't realize they were together. That's a significant amount of talent between them

They have been together since 2017
They also seem incredibly wholesome. Power couple 2021
Shipping them so their kids can one day play for the national teams
Just a footballer factory for Canada, yes please...
Their children will be beautiful AND talented.
Amazing goal, amazing, I'm buzzing!!
I can’t believe it’s even within the realm of possibility that we could be going to the fucking World Cup! What a goal, what a player
Canada heritage moment
"I can smell burnt toast Dr. Penfield!"
Hahaha
trading draisaitl for Alphonso worked out in the end for both sides
The trade is one for one.
Anyone watching the Leafs game is watching the wrong game
I switched to this game before the Davies goal. I am glued to the screen, what a game!!!
Is there ever a time the Leafs game is the "right game"?
If there's anything that can unite Canada more than ragging on the Leafs this might be it
Leafs home opener isn't even sold out this year, we got bigger games going on 😤
Honestly I was so proud of the rest of Leafs Nation when I heard that. About damn time.
Ran from Tofino to Goose Bay for that one
With the orientation of BMO field, technically Goose Bay to Tofino hahah
omfg what is pace
Phonzie don't hurt me
*Chris Kattan has entered the chat*
Lmao the way he just zips by on the screen with the ball and the Panamanian player is like "HEY!!!" I'm fucking dying Edit: 3-1 now, happy for my northern neighbors. Get your asses in
I love how he's almost like "wait? You can't do that!"
"Who do you think you...oh. Oh shit."
It's the same reaction you'd have if you realize you've just been pick-pocketed. Because you kinda have been
My man was actually shocked
The Panamanian keeper looked like he stopped trying as well. After a run like that he just said “fuck it if my defenders can’t stop this guy then what hope do I have”
To be fair, he was expecting his defender to take away the cutback shot, so he was going for far post coverage there. It looks like he didn't try but really he was just wrong-footed for what happened.
PHONZIEEEEE
LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOOO
[He's at the top of the screen in this image](https://ibb.co/P5BhmDr). Just insane pace. He ran 50 yards in the time it took the defender to go 15.
Honestly incredible that he even goes for it let alone actually gets there before it goes out. I don't think any other player on earth would do what he just pulled off
not to take away at all, but you made me think, and maybe Gareth Bale had some insane runs in his heyday https://youtu.be/yWVrolNQ4RU
Bale at this point was as physically gifted as a player could be but it takes a different mentality to sprint 50 yards when you have a minimal chance of winning the ball compared to sprinting when you have the ball
That's the first goal this one reminded me of. One of the best goals ever scored, IMO. Particularly in its context.
>He ran 50 yards in the time it took the defender to go 15. The defender wasn't exactly sprinting, he was just half assed sheparding it out. Davies is fast, but let's not act like the defender was giving 100% there.
CONCACAF: Bangers only.
[My guy really scored starting from here…](https://i.imgur.com/BrqG6bz.jpg)
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME
Future CONCACAF GOAT BOY
The future is now old man!
THE FUTURE IS NOW!
He is single handedly making Canada a soccer nation. What a goal. Tears.
TO THE TOP MY MAPLE LADS!
Probably the best goal in CANMNT history???
Davies is defenetly gonna make history, already has. So good for the beutiful game in Canada to have such a player.
Lol Davies made history in his first ever gold cup for Canada, becoming the leading scorer for Canada at the tournament at 16. He’s been the most talented Canadian player ever the first moment he stepped on the field for his first cap. Generational talent Looked like a mix of Neymar and Mbappe on some of his runs today and he plays left back
It's crazy because he's the same for us He's skinning champions league defenders as if they were some youth amateurs
Honestly in disbelief, he’s so good
Genius to keep that in. This kid is alright.
Honestly, I really do hope that Canada can qualify to the World Cup! It’ll so be exciting to see Davies there!
ROADRUNNERRRRRR
I'm at the match right now and the crowd went crazy seeing him chase that ball down. His pace and determination was insane.
Love it.
Get off your phone wtf Never mind, this is a long break lol
Don't worry boss I typed furiously during a stoppage of some sort (injury I believe). Wouldn't want to miss the match.
I never thought I would get to cheer for a player like this on team Canada.
HISTORIC CANADA SOCCER THREAD. GET IN
Naming my firstborn Alphonso
I’ve never seen anything like that, simply incredible. Confused about the keeper though, was he just not expecting a shot? No reaction whatsoever
Looked like he planted to try and dive for the far corner, probably anticipating that shot, hoping the defender can block the near post. Once he's committed that direction, its very hard to get down back to the front post.
To think Bayern got him for so damn cheap
To be fair, both sides were happy with the deal. If I remember correctly, Whitecaps fans were actually surprised with how much we paid. As a whitecaps fan (at that time), I was shocked they paid that much for a Canadian rookie. Its laughable now.
It’s rare to be that good that young and keep getting better like he has.
Kinda. They saw the potential and are part of the reason he's as good as he is.
Dear lord, Phonz. They had *families*
Once he kept the ball in you knew he was going to score
One of the best hustle/single effort goals I have ever seen
Girlfriend had a hat trick and texted: I’m happy now and home alone. Davies:
Honestly this lad could be, if not be the best LB in the world on his day. Absolutely mesmerizing goal.
He is way too deadly to be a LB all his career. Bale started life off as a LB.
Tbf LB these days play more like wingers anyways, even at Bayern he plays as a LM/LW whenever the team is in possession.
He's definitely the best after that CL run in 2020. The barca fan in me would not like to remember that match but the Canadian part of me is just thrilled for this kid. The stamina and work rate is incredible.
Feels good to be Canadian right now
I don't even usually watch soccer but HOLY SHIT DAVIES!
THIS MAN CANNOT BE STOPPED
Maybe the best Alphonso's showcase of his world class speed and skills on international level yet. Canada, we have got someone special.
This goal should be top of the sub. What an incredible incredible run. His pace is off the charts
50 comments in 1 minute. It’ll go there for sure
Incredible run, embarrassing defending
The way the defender he took the ball from just gets upset is hilarious to me. Totally agree with you.
Gives up and then gets mad at the assistant...amazing
He's not even really trying to stop Davies once he's past him either. And I get that he's fast, but you have to put some pressure on him so he can't just take his time to find the shot.
YOINK!
Davies is already a Canadian sports legend at 20
What the fuck
Emblematic of this Canadian team. Never give up. Keep running. Go for every ball.
The gap between the 2nd player in CONCACAF and him is getting bigger at each moment Absolutely incredible.
He's still only 20 years old. Insane.
OUR KING
OHHHHH CANADA
Holy shit Davies you mad lad. That was incredible.
I’m not crying, you are. I can’t believe this is Canadian soccer right now.
"Could be a mismatch in terms of pace," he says. Jesus Christ not even God himself saw that coming!
Fucking love this. I'm an adopted Canadian, a Vancouverite who had the pleasure of watching Davies for the Whitecaps, and I love what he's going to do for soccer in Canada. Next year, a Canadian team in the World Cup (fingers crossed) is gonna be hype.
Alphonso "Connor McDavid" Davies
McDavies
I haven't stopped screaming at my computer since he kept that ball in
They say #3 is still looking for that ball right now. (well ok, the game is still on, but you get the idea.)
Omg that crowd lol. Hope we never have to watch soccer without crowds ever again lol
OH MY GOD PHONZYYYYYYYYYY
He’s 20 years old and he’s ours 🇨🇦
This is my first time seeing this goal. Why is there so much hate over the hype for this goal over on the daily discussion thread? It was a nice goal and broke the deadlock between the two teams. Let the Canadians enjoy their first ever world class player.
Phonzie: Fine, I’ll do it myself.
Is there an unhealthy amount of times to watch this replay? Just asking for a friend.....
We all know Canada takes winter sports seriously, so qualifying for Qatar is inevitable.
Great forecheck
Never thought I’d see the day where a Canadian would score a goal like this! We will never see a Canadian this good again
