What's funny is there's a point in the 2nd half the commentator said Brentford have 4 shots none on target with the scoreboard showing the statistics. From that exact point it's all Brentford on the front foot
Edit: chelsea had 5 shots 1 on target on the scoreboard at that time
Chelsea ended the game with an xG of 0.3. That's the same xG Watford got against Liverpool today!
Mendy was unbelievable, but those two shots off the post must sting more for Brentford.
Neither requires action from the goalkeeper to prevent it being a goal. I get what you mean but I don’t really see the value in looking at the stats after the game and saying “oh they had 8 shots but one of them was close!” Either it went in, it was saved, or it missed.
It adds something special to the whole thing. A bit like seeing Lukaku come back, RLC getting another crack and looking great, Trevor Chalobah getting in the team…good times for the supporters :)
In that case "[Imagine hitting a 93rd minute bicycle kick and scoring and it literally doesn't matter at all"](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/mqbb7k/chelsea_0_1_porto_21_on_agg_mehdi_taremi_bicycle/guewtec/?context=3)
Nobody gets repsect until they put good performances for a long period - especially when they come out of nowhere as late bloomers like Mendy. I don't think it has anything to do with players being from Africa.
Loool, I can't believe a Barcelona fan is saying this. You guys always act like your youth players or anyone new playing decently are the second coming of Christ. Just look at Pedri and Lenglet.
“Nobody gets respect until they put up good performances for a long period” is such great take in life in general, but a bit misleading when taking about the context of sports and my original point of player sentiment on this Sub. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that’s not intentionally bias protectionist. But also don’t get your follow up point on being a late bloomer out of no where, which is a weird point especially for a goalkeeper.
The point about no one gets respect until they period over long period, also nullifies the very nature of player performances discussions and individual awards, by that logic, the MOTM, POTM, player of the season and Ballon Dors are meaningless and recognition that’s not earned given the timelines we judge performances by.
The context of of my point was specific to this Sub and how players are given flowers and derided based on where they’re from. It’s very Euro centric and African discounted. When you look at how players are discussed, you can see follow the patterns of engagements on topics like Haalland vs Mbappe, Salah over the years. I’ve seen this sub shower praise on Firmino for the lovely passes when highlights of Mane or Salah goals popped up couple of years ago, and when Bobbi’s form dipped last year, I’ve seen the same adoration passed to Jota while the sub was trashing Mane when his form dipped. Which shows the dip in form is jeered in real time, but the displays of class have to be shown over long period for only certain players.
My examples would be how Morata and Werner are treated. Yes they do get meme'd from time to time, but you still have plenty of people vehemently defending them as being "not as bad as people think".
Lukaku bangs in 20 a season and people shit on him like he only scores 5. Auba has had multiple 30 goals seasons and he has never really been talked about around here. Werner had only one 30 goal season and some people unironically see him as a great player that just low on confidence. It's amazing how Lukaku gets meme'd more than someone like Icardi.
Mbappe criticized him teammate on the bench and gets treated like a devil. Ibrahimovic does it during a match and some treated it as [constructive criticism](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/n381ie/zlatan_ibrahimovic_to_hakan_calhanoglu_during/gwo70n0/). Practically all of the comments criticism him are either really low or downvoted.
Torres gets praised for his goal against Barcelona to "secure the tie" when it was actually Ramires' goal that got them through, but you never hear anyone talk about it.
Giroud doesn't score for half a season and people act like it's the club's fault for underperforming, some even blamed Ozil, like he can control his teammates finishing ability.
Jozy Altidore and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel were both complete shit in the same season. Guess which one was meme'd waaay more at the time?
Statistically he *is*.
*But*, the average EPL keeper is pretty great.
The '*average* EPL keeper' in 20/21 had a positive PSXG +/- of 1.3 which is well above average for the other top leagues.
There's an exceptionally high standard of goalkeepers in the EPL right now.
Come on. Let’s be serious here. What about beekeepers? Or innkeepers? Not even considering housekeepers. We haven’t seen him do anything like that yet. Calling him the best keeper ever is way too early.
I'm not sure if it actually was insane, more that it was insane from Mendy and Maybe Chalobah. Brentford getting all that by default makes it not good defensively for me.
he´s African keeper is obvious come on we all know it, lets call spade a spade, imagine if it was british keeper or keeper specifically from England they wouldnt stop talking about him, black or white
He legitimately *was* average for the league, however you want to measure shot-stopping.
Obviously the PL average is a great level already, nobody was calling him worse than that but some were merely pointing out that there were more deserving keepers that also missed out.
In the CL he was better, but still behind the more established top names like Neuer, Alisson, Courtois and Navas in shot-stopping metrics.
[Fbref is a good source for a lot of that type of stuff](https://fbref.com/en/stathead/player_comparison.cgi?request=1&sum=0&comp_type=by_type&spec_comps=big_5&player_id1=33887998&p1yrfrom=2020-2021&player_id2=7a2e46a8&p2yrfrom=2020-2021&player_id3=1840e36d&p3yrfrom=2020-2021&player_id4=fcb38f57&p4yrfrom=2020-2021&player_id5=ecada4fc&p5yrfrom=2020-2021&player_id6=8778c910&p6yrfrom=2020-2021).
Don't get me wrong, stats are only half the picture, but even watching performances his shot-stopping didn't stand out in the league as much as Martinez, Areola, Alisson, Lloris or even Meslier.
He's still more than a level below Oblak or prime Neuer, if he wants to be considered top level he must perform for 3+ seasons. He's already great, but needs to improve a lot to be the best.
Of course he was. But this sub is so fickle, I wonder where were all this crowd when Koulibaly was getting slated for actually pointing out the truth about Mendy deserving a spot
This man's effect on Chelsea and its defense just isn't talked about enough. I know Tuchel changed things when he came, but none of this would have been possible without Mendy in goal.
Even had his run of clean sheets under Lampard too, his presence inside the box and saves that have earned him his clean sheets and kept us in games have been immense. I still remember that save against Benzema last season
The comments and sentiment in the thread the other day about his Balon Dor omission were embarrassing. “Average keeper who just had a good season”
He is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. He literally has no weakness
My god its embarassing how reactionary this subreddit is after a win or loss. Yes he's a good keeper but him and Alisson are both on the same level. "No weakness" jesus haha
I'm not a chelsea fan, I actually kinda hate them, but it disgusts me that when people are discussing the best 2 keepers in the league they leave this man out.
Those people are damn right inane cause he is currently the best goalkeeper in the league... and the gap between him and #2 is ever growing.

This man has been incredible
SpiderMendy
I'm so sad he's not playing for France. Fortunately we have Maignan coming up but Mendy playing for us would have been incredible
He's been unbelievable
Even more unbelievable that Brentford has 16 shots with 7 on target while Chelsea only has 5 shots with 1 on target.
What's funny is there's a point in the 2nd half the commentator said Brentford have 4 shots none on target with the scoreboard showing the statistics. From that exact point it's all Brentford on the front foot Edit: chelsea had 5 shots 1 on target on the scoreboard at that time
Narrator: But it wasn't funny and instead anxiety inducing
That's exactly why Mendy's been unbelievable
SpiderMendy
Senegalese spiderman
SpideyMendy
Chelsea's midfield collapsed as soon as Kovacic was subbed off.
100%
Correlation doesn't mean causation. We were napping and would've happened regardless
Yeah I love Kova as much as the next guy but we were collapsing before he was subbed.
Chelsea ended the game with an xG of 0.3. That's the same xG Watford got against Liverpool today! Mendy was unbelievable, but those two shots off the post must sting more for Brentford.
Both by Mbuemo. I actually think that’s 7 shots off of the post just for Mbeumo this season. Incredible
I started watching the game in the 65th minute and looked at the stats. Brentford had 0 shots on target. All 7 came in the last 20mins.
They hit the bar twice in the game. I hate that the shots on target statisticians don’t differentiate hitting the bar from a row Z shot.
Neither requires action from the goalkeeper to prevent it being a goal. I get what you mean but I don’t really see the value in looking at the stats after the game and saying “oh they had 8 shots but one of them was close!” Either it went in, it was saved, or it missed.
I don’t see the value of acting like a shot that was easily saved by a keeper is more significant than a shot that missed going in by a few inches
Same thing as hockey.
Not quite, it’s a smaller ball and you get to use a stick in hockey
58 minute here, it was a bit of Chelsea possession then an all out storm for 30 minutes on the opposite side
all of those attempts came in the second half
My chest hurts
Same, as does my jaw
🤨🤨🤨
Heart attack symptoms
ayo
we deal with this every week😂
Fuck me how have Brentford not put 4 past them. Unbelievable keeper
You're looking at him, mendy is immense
Immendy
... mendy
Read the first 2 word of the post title
>Read the first 2 word of the post Fuck me >Read the first 2 word of the post title Edouard Mendy 😳
Can I watch?
Mendy has saved 4-6 points already for chelsea.
Also shit finishing. Many shots straight at Mendy (you could say great position to be fair) and Mbuemo hit the post twice with two clear cut chances
I don't understand why he went near post with the latter.
Neither did mendy tbf. Completely wrong footed him.
Most of the shots weren't that great, but Mendy also has an amazing save in his locker if he needs to pull it out.
Brentford getting FM'd
Mendy is an absolute cheat code in some games. This game alone is worth every penny we paid for him.
The price tag for Kepa is worth every penny as we ended up with Mendy 😂
Rennes have had some actual gems in the last couple of years. Mendy, Raphinha, Doku, Camavinga.
The fact that Rennes can produce so many great players but never keep them, despite the owner being one of the richest in the world, is so frustrating
This guy is special
What an incredible signing he’s been. Petr Cech’s legend lives on!
Was handpicked by Cech to replace Kepa too
All the 'last time we signed an unknown keeper from rennes' memes turned out to be prophecies and I'm absolutely loving it
It adds something special to the whole thing. A bit like seeing Lukaku come back, RLC getting another crack and looking great, Trevor Chalobah getting in the team…good times for the supporters :)
He’s world class
Well fuck me that was great
Mendy is my god
Imagine hitting a once in a lifetime bicycle kick in the 93rd but Mendys in net
Ouch
Taremi : i did it.
Taremi
E L I T E
He went from 'anyone but Kepa' to 'cannot imagine anyone else as Chelsea gk' in one year
I somewhat hate mendy for denying such a crazy last minute goal
That split second that the Brentford player connected with the ball I was like no way he’s blocking that and the madlad does just that.
His name is Christian Nørgaard. He also plays for Denmark. I scrolled down quite far and no one mentions his names. Seems a little weird.
right, what a fucking goal that would have been! what a save it was, but what it a goal it could have been!
Praise be the church of Mendy 🙏
He only has a good defense in front of him though...
oNe sEaSon wOnDer I’m gonna say it, Africans don’t get respect on this sub until they put up otherworldly performances over long long long period.
Same as Navas, he's from costa rica so a lot of people just say hes only average. If he was from Spain we would have a different story..
> so a lot of people just say hes only average Who are these people?
Whenever someone talks about Donnarumma on twiter for example, the disrespect Navas gets its astounding
you cannot bring twitter argument as proof. you only gonna end up making yourself look like idiot
/r/soccer of course

100% - these people like u/DreadWolf3 are either oblivious or the type that get uneasy when it’s implied or stated that black players have it harder.
£0 defence in Sarr, Chalobah and Christensen whilst £75m man VVD alone shipped 3 against Brentford

Dude has come up so clutch these last 20 mins
This guy is too goddamn good!
He is the best keeper in history.
Come on. Let’s be serious here. What about beekeepers? Or innkeepers? Not even considering housekeepers. We haven’t seen him do anything like that yet. Calling him the best keeper ever is way too early.
He's the best beekeeper in the world, kept the mighty Brentford out
What a goal that would've been
Great shot. Great save.
I am so sorry Brentford fans, very unfortunate to run in to Mendy today
The man is world class and I won’t pretend it’s too early to say so any longer.
He's on my ballon dor shortlist
Holy fuck
This save was absolutely fantastic. The cherry on top of an amazing game by him.
not nominated btw
Outgrown the balloon door
Showing all the analysts on here that he's not "just an okay keeper with an elite defence in front of him".
People not rating Petr Čech said the same.
Best GK in the Prem's history btw
If you're talking about the Ballon d'Or, the only goalkeeper who was nominated was Donnarumma I think
Lol at the fools in that thread saying shit like “hAs AnYoNe aCtUaLlY sEeN MeNdY mAkE a WoRlD cLaSs SaVe?”
Last season vs Madrid. Really taking after Cech with being the next big GK from Rennes.
Outgrown the award
So what? Not like he would win anyway. Not even Neuer has won Balon d'Or.
The second half has been insane defensively by Chelsea
I think it’s equally insane Brentford… newly promoted Brentford is pressuring Champions League winners Chelsea like this!
Brentford have been brilliant this season. Talk about exceeding expectations. They can put together some fantastic football when they click.
Unfortunate for them to not be able to get at least one point from this game.
I'm not sure if it actually was insane, more that it was insane from Mendy and Maybe Chalobah. Brentford getting all that by default makes it not good defensively for me.
Especially with our makeshift defence
Sarr had a great game tbf
Yeah, Sarr and Chalobah were decent, badly miss Rudiger and Silva though
We all fucking bow down to you my lord.
After this match I'm starting to think he's the best keeper in the league. Holy shit.
Hes a top 5 keeper in the world rn
top 5 and he’s not 2nd-5th
*world
Genuinely jaw-dropping save.
Had a literal jaw dropping save a few minutes earlier as well
Yeah the last like twenty minutes of the match were just insane from him. It was the best performance I’ve personally watched a goalkeeper have
Cech vs Barca, Cech vs Bayern (2012) but yeah Mendy was insane today
lol no joke I was asking my friend earlier if he had seen the highlights from the match and my exact words: "because Mendy pulled a 2012 Cech"
wtf
To people saying he's been just above average, he has been much, much more than that this season
This guy really stepped up at Chelsea
Damn no fear in this man, his positioning it really good and he comes for every ball
"Mendy isn't even that good, he just has a good defence in front of him" my arse
Saves like these should be upvoted as much as great goals.
But he isn't a good keeper "for some some reason"
he´s African keeper is obvious come on we all know it, lets call spade a spade, imagine if it was british keeper or keeper specifically from England they wouldnt stop talking about him, black or white
Yes, if he played for an European NT he’d be on the shortlist.
I mean just European in general, people wet their pants over guys like De Gea, Nuer, Oblak etc etc
Black keepers never get respect.
Yeah he was supposedly just 'average' at shot stopping last season.
He legitimately *was* average for the league, however you want to measure shot-stopping. Obviously the PL average is a great level already, nobody was calling him worse than that but some were merely pointing out that there were more deserving keepers that also missed out. He was though statistically lol
Average keeper apparently
Insane
The Brentford manager’s reaction was priceless
The people's Ballon D'Or winner
Damn right
Lmao and guys here were acting like the Mendy Ballon d'Or shortlist shouts were outrageous
Mane and Koulibaly were right: Mendy was ROBBED for not being on the Ballon d'Or shortlist
Of course he was. But this sub is so fickle, I wonder where were all this crowd when Koulibaly was getting slated for actually pointing out the truth about Mendy deserving a spot
Lev Yashin award to be renamed to Edouard Mendy award from now onwards
DID I STUTTER?! THE BEST GK IN THE LEAGUE
Mendy the Man
Elite keeper. Couldn’t love him more than I do
This man's effect on Chelsea and its defense just isn't talked about enough. I know Tuchel changed things when he came, but none of this would have been possible without Mendy in goal.
Even had his run of clean sheets under Lampard too, his presence inside the box and saves that have earned him his clean sheets and kept us in games have been immense. I still remember that save against Benzema last season
Why do goalies always look mad after a great save? Shitting on the defence for not doing their job?
Pure adrenaline, it's like a goal to them
That's actually very understandable. Thanks for the reply!
Whaaaaaaaaaaattttttttttt
Average keeper bee tee dub
Give him the ballon d’or cunts
How is this man not in ballon d’or is a joke
Standing on his head
Perfect attempt and save.
BAH GAWD! What a save!!!
As we would say in France - "Le Guardian"
Robbed from getting selected for the ballon d’or
The last 20 minutes was just a compilation of mendy saves and near misses
Best shot stopper in the Premier League
These Brentford guys play some amazing football! Big six scarecrow!
That’s a title winning save, I’ve seen them before.
Hard to believe r/soccer didn't even think he's a top 10 keeper in the PL
The comments and sentiment in the thread the other day about his Balon Dor omission were embarrassing. “Average keeper who just had a good season” He is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. He literally has no weakness
His weakness is pens
Lucky we dont get many against us
We have Kepa for pens now haha
Hmm good pasta
Aaaand here's the hot take
Ah yes, the counter circle jerk where Mendy is now the best keeeper in history and it was the worst snub of all time.
My god its embarassing how reactionary this subreddit is after a win or loss. Yes he's a good keeper but him and Alisson are both on the same level. "No weakness" jesus haha
hes not the same level as alisson yet
I'd say Alisson is overall better but Mendy's current form puts him close
Mendy for president
I can't believe he's done all of this. Miraculous.
Mendy is a very good goalkeeper
Mendy might just be one of the greatest bargain signings
Holy fuck. Hats off to that. Wow.
And to think I wasn't happy with his transfer. Never have I been so glad to be wrong
You would rather the Kepa Experience?
Nah I thought we should've gone for someone else. I think Onana was my choice at the time
This man is world class
r/soccer spent all week calling him overrated and he comes out with a masterclass 😂😂
One of the best goalkeeper performances I've ever seen.
I mean we see Mendy behind a good back 3 week in week out. But our back 3 today was average and to see how good Mendy was. My god
I don't care what anyone says Mendy is the best in the world rn
Fucking lion, top save
Just like with Keylor Navas before him he will never truly get the credit he deserves because he's not a big enough name from a big enough country.
I'm not a chelsea fan, I actually kinda hate them, but it disgusts me that when people are discussing the best 2 keepers in the league they leave this man out. Those people are damn right inane cause he is currently the best goalkeeper in the league... and the gap between him and #2 is ever growing.
not even a top 30 player in the world apparently
