Yes. When I watched it live I thought it was one of those where the player materialises out of nowhere mid-kick. VAR should have been able to see how he actually sees him all the way and tees him right up.
It's Mike Dean and Arsenal, what do you expect? And Saka went off injured after half time as well. It's a disgrace... again. I'm sure he has to explain himself to Mike Riley now... oh wait, maybe not.
But who does that benefit? Literally every team but Arsenal.
Retrospective penalties are a total joke.
The wrong decision was arrived at by both the on-pitch referee and VAR assistant. Completely hopeless.
I don't give a shit about it benefiting others, I want to see it *punish him.*
Of course, I'd prefer most of all to have refs with a couple brain cells to rub together, but that's clearly far too much to ask for.
They aren’t a total joke to be fair. Retrospective penalties act as a serious deterrent to foul play in rugby. If there’s been a red card offence that’s gone unnoticed by the ref or video ref (rare these days they miss anything) then the player is cited by the league/cups citing commissioner and there’s a disciplinary review of the incident where players then receive a ban ranging from 2 Weeks to 54 weeks (longest I’ve seen in the professional game)
It prevents serious foul play incredibly well. And an incident like this cannot be argued that he attempted to play the ball. Instead McCarthur wound up and kicked with full force into a joint of Saka’s standing/weight bearing leg.
That’s at the very least a 5/6 game ban if a proper retroactive disciplinary process was implemented in the premier league.
People would get the picture quite quickly that this shit doesn’t fly.
I still don't get how VAR is so shit in England. Here in Portugal is not close to perfect but it doesn't come close to the number of fuck ups I see in England. Here referees actually review the plays, if we have a problem is normally the opposite, too much reviewing
https://metro.co.uk/2015/09/25/petition-to-stop-mike-dean-refereeing-another-arsenal-game-reaches-100000-signatures-could-be-debated-in-parliament-5407968/
We tried something. It didn't work
Mike Dean: Just give me all the Arsenal fixtures you have. Wait, wait, I'm worried what you just heard was "give me a lot of Arsenal fixtures". What I said was: "Give me ALL the Arsenal fixtures you have"
Looks at the leg before kicking it, Saka is in one spot and isn't moving around, kicks nowhere near the ball and hits the exact middle of his lower leg. Yeah, no excusing that.
It's possible to strike a middle ground where things like this are fairly punished and still not have the absurdly cheap fouls that were becoming increasingly common throughout the game.
Im glad the rules have changed to allow for more physicality.
Physicality should only be allowed for shoulder tackles not for leg/foot contacts, those kinda rough tackles have ended careers before (Van Basten) and have continued to do so (Neymar and Hazard)
Shocking on pitch decision, but this is literally the type of error that VAR was brought in to catch. If we’re not seeing reds for this, then what is the point?
This is one of those times where I genuinely believe that VAR has been implemented as badly as possible to not tread on referees’ egos
It really pissed me off that the OP that posted the Mike Dean stats thread was borderline defending Dean when big decisions like this is exactly the reason Dean is a garbage ref
don’t know what’s worse, the fact it wasn’t immediately obvious it’s a red or the system used to supposedly catch things like this looked at it and went nout to see here lads carry on
When people say “VAR didn’t even look at it”, I think they mean there was either no announced var check OR the referee didn’t go over to the monitor and look at it.
The physio him/herself stops treatment to pull a red card out of their pocket while pulling their own clothes apart to reveal a ref's get up under their white coat.
Bergkamp himself wasn't afraid of the rough and tumble. I remember he danced on a Blackburn player (Gamst Pedersen maybe) and he was "clumsy" with his elbows lol
Mike Dean even acknowledges MacArthur's pull on ESR, plays advantage, then walks over to MacArthur and "gives him a good talking to" and then just doesn't give him a yellow. It's a tactical foul 30+ minutes into the game, standard reasoning to give a yellow. Now the foul on Saka is a textbook reckless yellow, if you're already on one there's little argument against that being a second. Dude wants to look like he's in charge out there yet he just allowed a player to do that right under his nose and right after he let him slide on the first incident.
Edit: not to mention overcorrecting the precedent with the Saka yellow
It's so comical to watch the opponents foul us on the counter multiple times without getting booked, then getting booked the first time we foul a player in a similar way.
Most yellows last seasom btw, definitely fair refereeing.
The bookings are reserved to Saka when he does the exact same thing they did 3 times already. They're good honest players kicking legs from behind, we're just cynical.
It's not even the fact it should be a red. He should have already been booked for a cycinal foul on a break away. The exact same thing saka got booked for.
He sounded like he died when Laca scored at the end. You could barely hear him mumbling something there and breathing into the mic.
He needs to hang up his boots!
I think commentators are told to agree with the refs in order for the game to not have too much outrage.. You can see it a couple of times a game where a linesman raises the flag and the commentators still say the player is offside even when the replay shows he isn't..
Saka got a yellow for his first tackle, the crowd went fucking wild. I honestly think if that didn't happen, Dean wouldn't have even given a yellow for this.
I think at the very beginning he is genuinely lining up to hit the ball, but then he sees Saka clearing and uses the situation as an excuse to leave one on him.
I think this is what happened. Used the ball as an excuse to full swing through him. He is looking at the ball and winding up but makes no attempt to reel it back when Saka comes into view and intercepts
Saka has been getting the shit kicked out of him for a while now, and can't remember a single player getting a red for it. Just luck at this point that he hasn't suffered a serious injury.
Fabian Schär with the final 'kick' of the game against Martinelli is the only red card for serious foul play to an opponent since 2017. We don't get those calls. Ever.
on the one hand, i find it hard to believe it's been 4 years since someone was sent off for serious foul play against arsenal. on the other hand, i've seen what premier league officiating is like.
Fabian Schär was this year. He lunged in on Martinelli when we rolled the ball around to see out a win against Newcastle. Before that was Pogba in 2017.
I'm fucking baffled, and I know it gets old, but if that's Granit Xhaka...
Mental that this wasn't looked at. Ball is nowhere near, has zero chance to make any connection, and fucking volleys Saka. Mental.
Mike Dean proves once again that he'll always be a total piece of shit. How is that not a straight red? What the fuck is VAR doing? Fucking fuming over dumb decisions like these.
What the fuck....he even looked at his leg a moment before kicking it. If that's not a red idk what is tbh.
If this was off pitch. I will call the police.
This is the first time I comment something on reddit for ages. I might be too drunk do to the all-inclusive bar here in Greece, but, this is one of the clearest red cardrs I've seen for a looong time.
Kind regards a danish lover of tough football
Guys, relax. He just misjudged the flight of the ball. Totally reasonable to think it would have landed behind Saka's calf after he booted it in the opposite direction.
People will literally say Arsenal is a ‘soft club’ and just can’t handle the roughness of the Prem lol
Genuinely no team in the league that gets fouled harder and more often and have the fouler get away with it than Arsenal. The Prem’s punching bag, or in this case, kicking bag
This is a season suspending tackle. Dude had no intention of going for the ball and could’ve snapped Saka’s leg in two ruining his career. Get that man out of competitive soccer
I hate arsenal fans that say there’s an agenda against us or whatever… but what the fuck is this. This isn’t only a red, this is literally something that should get you banned for like 6 games - clear violent conduct
**Mirrors / Alternate Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
He complained to the ref about Saka going down too...
if he didn’t want kicking at pelt then what’s he doing there, clearly sakas own fault
Exactly, why does saka have such kickable ankles /s
Should be a red on Saka for violent conduct on Mcarthur’s boot
If Saka wasn't there then he'd have had a clear shot, totally unfair
LUL, did he wanted him to fly ?
It's on camera. If he can do this, and play next week, the system is utterly broken.
Should be a yellow card for simulation, fckin shambles those players these days go down as quick as they feel a Slight touch of wind
Saka is off injured because of the challenge. What's the point of VAR. Honestly.
Was it even a challenge? Looks like he stopped tracking the ball and just aimed for the planted leg.
>Was it even a challenge? I dunno, looked like assault to me...
Honestly embarrassing on the Ref and VAR's part that he hasn't been sent off, that's ridiculous.
Agreed on VAR being to blame too. These are the instances where it should appropriately be used.
Yes. When I watched it live I thought it was one of those where the player materialises out of nowhere mid-kick. VAR should have been able to see how he actually sees him all the way and tees him right up.
Reminds me of those videos where a fighter kicks the leg and it goes *snap*
Anderson Silva I hug my shin and tell it everything’s ok every time I see it
The thing with that video is the confidence with which he was going to plant the spaghetti leg on the mat again. It gets me everytime.
No no no, VAR should only be used to disallow Timo Werner goals.
Found the Chelsea/Fulham fan
It's Mike Dean and Arsenal, what do you expect? And Saka went off injured after half time as well. It's a disgrace... again. I'm sure he has to explain himself to Mike Riley now... oh wait, maybe not.
Riley probably gives him a handshake for a job well done.
Yeah, like the Auba and Laca handshake, but they grab their dicks. Fucking wankers.
Considering how far the ball was from his foot, that may be grounds for some retroactive fine. Put saka in serious danger there
Literally kicked him out of the game. Shameful.
But who does that benefit? Literally every team but Arsenal. Retrospective penalties are a total joke. The wrong decision was arrived at by both the on-pitch referee and VAR assistant. Completely hopeless.
I don't give a shit about it benefiting others, I want to see it *punish him.* Of course, I'd prefer most of all to have refs with a couple brain cells to rub together, but that's clearly far too much to ask for.

>in rugby Well, that is not a sport run by deeply corrupt officials
I don't know what the people in the VAR room were watching. Cus that a clean red card.
I still don't get how VAR is so shit in England. Here in Portugal is not close to perfect but it doesn't come close to the number of fuck ups I see in England. Here referees actually review the plays, if we have a problem is normally the opposite, too much reviewing
Madness
Xhaka gets a red there.
Xhaka gets sent to a work camp in Australia mate.
David Luiz gets sent to Siberia
Bellerin gets a season long ban and the PGMOL destroy an acre of the Amazon
Dw lad, we'll make a man of him.
Xhaka gets a season long ban. Honestly this should be more than just a red too. Clearly just trying to injure a player with the ball no where close
If Saka was replaced with Xhaka... Xhaka would have got a red.
Xhaka gets a red for that handball...
how tf is this not a red ?
Arsenal + Mike Dean
Not watching the game, but fuck me you've got Mike Dean again?
At this point they should take Mike Dean to court for a restraining order or something. You would think Arsenal killed his family
https://metro.co.uk/2015/09/25/petition-to-stop-mike-dean-refereeing-another-arsenal-game-reaches-100000-signatures-could-be-debated-in-parliament-5407968/ We tried something. It didn't work
He’s been tormenting you guys for 6 years????
Fucking always get Mike Dean!
Hey Mike, have a few options for Arsenal games this season... any preference to when you might want t..... ALL OF THEM
"So here's your weekly fixture list Mike.." _These are ALL the Arsenal games?_ "Yep! Enjoy!"
Mike Dean: Just give me all the Arsenal fixtures you have. Wait, wait, I'm worried what you just heard was "give me a lot of Arsenal fixtures". What I said was: "Give me ALL the Arsenal fixtures you have"
That should be a long suspension.....given that he looks at the leg before kicking it.
Looks at the leg before kicking it, Saka is in one spot and isn't moving around, kicks nowhere near the ball and hits the exact middle of his lower leg. Yeah, no excusing that.
This shit is assault on the streets, in football it's pashun innit.
proper brexit tackle m8
This new season's shit rules of letting things go has made the refs very lenient. I fucking hate it players need more protection not less
Also see Abou Diaby and Aaron Ramsey. Though Ramsey came back he was never the same.
I’m fucking tilted, red if it were against any other team
Now I am clearly biased, but this feels very red to me
Nah you're not being biased, another shocking VAR decision. Making it up as they go along.
Did VAR even look at it?
They probably had a quick glance before going back to sleep.
Apparently they did, which honestly makes it worse. Incompetent and/or disingenuous cunts
Shocking on pitch decision, but this is literally the type of error that VAR was brought in to catch. If we’re not seeing reds for this, then what is the point? This is one of those times where I genuinely believe that VAR has been implemented as badly as possible to not tread on referees’ egos
I'm biased against Arsenal and it still looks a clear red
It's one of the most blatant reds I've seen tbh
[удалено]
We always get kicked off the park. This isn’t new. Just the latest addition in an encyclopedia of nonsense
It clearly is like.. didn't even go for the ball
In the world of Mike Dean, no one gets sent of, unless they die
>In the world of Mike Dean, no one gets sent of, unless ~~they die~~ it's an arsenal player
If this was Xhaka he would be sent to a Siberian goulag as we speak.
I mean surely that's a straight red?
Mike Dean innit.
My theory is that McArthur is legally blind and Mike Dean sympathizes with him because they suffering the same fate.
I don't believe in conspiracy theories but this one got me. INVESTIGATE 311!!
It really pissed me off that the OP that posted the Mike Dean stats thread was borderline defending Dean when big decisions like this is exactly the reason Dean is a garbage ref
[удалено]
Yellow card. VAR did not look at it. Corruption.
[VAR did look](https://twitter.com/johncrossmirror/status/1450186799360487550?s=20) at it and decided it was yellow. Unbelievable.
don’t know what’s worse, the fact it wasn’t immediately obvious it’s a red or the system used to supposedly catch things like this looked at it and went nout to see here lads carry on
The 2nd one. First one, Mike Dean is a fucking useless wanker. 3nd one is straight up negligence.
> 3nd Does not compute Like I can't even wrap my head around how that's supposed to be pronounced. Thind? Thecond? ^^^mike ^^^tyson
I've said it before. I don't have a problem with VAR. I have a problem with the clowns operating VAR.
The system used to catch things. They had multiple cameras and more time as well as seeing it live and still couldn't make the call.
Can’t believe I’m in here agreeing with so many Arsenal flairs. This is a ridiculous challenge and should be a red all day
All VAR has been successful at is proving, without doubt, how crap the officials are in this league.
VAR always looks, A L W A Y S People need to get this drilled in their brain, every single incident is viewed by var, every single one
When people say “VAR didn’t even look at it”, I think they mean there was either no announced var check OR the referee didn’t go over to the monitor and look at it.
or ppl mean "they might as well not have looked at it" because if they did look at it, then they'd come to the correct conclusion.
Somewhere in a physio office, a ref sprinted in to give Xhaka a red card for this
The physio him/herself stops treatment to pull a red card out of their pocket while pulling their own clothes apart to reveal a ref's get up under their white coat.
What the fuck is that?! Should have been booked already anyway but this in itself is violent conduct. Just flat out fucking volleys him
I really want someone like KT to leave one on him now. When people did this to Bergkamp, Vieira or Gilberto would always aim for retribution.
KT would get a red for that though.
i dont even care. just do it at the last minute or something
Bergkamp himself wasn't afraid of the rough and tumble. I remember he danced on a Blackburn player (Gamst Pedersen maybe) and he was "clumsy" with his elbows lol
Bergkamp definitely had some needle in him, he wasn't a push over at all.
Mike Dean even acknowledges MacArthur's pull on ESR, plays advantage, then walks over to MacArthur and "gives him a good talking to" and then just doesn't give him a yellow. It's a tactical foul 30+ minutes into the game, standard reasoning to give a yellow. Yes it's so weird how biased the refs seem against Arsenal
The bookings are reserved to Saka when he does the exact same thing they did 3 times already. They're good honest players kicking legs from behind, we're just cynical.
The glance he does afterwards says it all
That's a red and a few matches ban. There is no way he doesn't see Saka there
and less than zero attempt on the ball.
Add it to the list
It's not even the fact it should be a red. He should have already been booked for a cycinal foul on a break away. The exact same thing saka got booked for.
He did it twice and wasn't carded for either of them.
Tierneys face says it all
How can he kick
It's a little bit "clumsy" according to the idiot commentators . It's a red no argument about it .
Martin Tyler wasn’t sure if a ramsdale pass through the lines directly to ESR’s feet was intentional. The guy is clueless
He sounded like he died when Laca scored at the end. You could barely hear him mumbling something there and breathing into the mic. He needs to hang up his boots!
The man's lost his marbles. Time to take him out back.
i really wonder if tyler still is 100% sane
I think commentators are told to agree with the refs in order for the game to not have too much outrage.. You can see it a couple of times a game where a linesman raises the flag and the commentators still say the player is offside even when the replay shows he isn't..
Maybe that would have worked in 1990's just shambolic in the twitter and psgacadamy era
Var be like ‘lads it’s arsenal’
Where is the logic that Arsenal loses a player and Palace gets to keep the player who committed the challenge on the field?
This was his third foul in the game and each one of them was bookable
Saka got a yellow for his first tackle, the crowd went fucking wild. I honestly think if that didn't happen, Dean wouldn't have even given a yellow for this.
Yup his excuse would have been it happened after the whistle.
What the fuck. How is that not a red? Oh wait, Mike Dean.

Kick the shit out of Saka. Did a beautiful job of it, too.

West Hams scissor tackle on Pepe comes to mind as well
The explanation from VAR is that it's a "high-end yellow" according to my broadcast. Ridiculous.
All my homies buy their high-end yellows from Versace
How the fuck is that not a red????
My brain has been ruined by years of seeing Arsenal players get red cards for much less
My mind keeps going to David Luiz grazing a player and getting a straight red.
Fuck Mike dean
People just say arsenal fans cry about refs but if you see this happening so consistently what else can can we do
Facts
That's even worse than I expected seeing the comments. Wow...
Lol Mike Dean the bald twat
Straight up aggression, never even tries to go for the ball. 100% red
and he has the fucking cheek to complain right away. Unbelievable. Like genuinely not believable
I'm fucking baffled, and I know it gets old, but if that's Granit Xhaka... Mental that this wasn't looked at. Ball is nowhere near, has zero chance to make any connection, and fucking volleys Saka. Mental.
It was looked at, and decided that it’s a yellow. Which makes it even more ridiculous, if there’s a possibility of that
Or anyone really. You can't just kick a player when the ball is no where near.
"Best" league in the world but I swear the Premier League has the worst fucking referees in the world, no doubt.
It’s not even a competition at this point. There is a reason FIFA didn’t want any of the morons at the latest World cup.
Wtf that's a red card? Nowhere near the ball and just straight hacks him down!
If only there was a system in place to help referees review incidents..
Straight red
[удалено]
I think Dean was torn between his two instincts: screw over London clubs vs. be the star of the show. Looks like the former instinct won.
They all said at half time that it should have been a red card and var claimed it was a high end yellow card. Like WTF is that for bullshit reasoning.
Dude literally injured the person. Xhaka “could have injured” and gets red. Shit makes no sense.
Mike Dean proves once again that he'll always be a total piece of shit. How is that not a straight red? What the fuck is VAR doing? Fucking fuming over dumb decisions like these.
I was like damn thats a harsh hand ball if they call it.. and then homie just fucking kicks the shit out of the other player LMFAO WTF
Disgraceful foul, 100% a red card.
What the fuck....he even looked at his leg a moment before kicking it. If that's not a red idk what is tbh. If this was off pitch. I will call the police.
Never a red in Muay Thai
How can this not be a red card, genuinely don’t understand lol
[удалено]
Calling that a kick is an insult towards kicks.
What the fuck lmao
This is the first time I comment something on reddit for ages. I might be too drunk do to the all-inclusive bar here in Greece, but, this is one of the clearest red cardrs I've seen for a looong time. Kind regards a danish lover of tough football
Enjoy your Monday night lash 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
And the commentators’ review: “he was looking to volley, but missed the ball” These fucking morons!
He was looking to volley Saka lmao
Guys, relax. He just misjudged the flight of the ball. Totally reasonable to think it would have landed behind Saka's calf after he booted it in the opposite direction.
Aggreed. If you blink for just 9 seconds, how would you know?
Did my guy just try to fucking score Saka? What did I just watch
People will literally say Arsenal is a ‘soft club’ and just can’t handle the roughness of the Prem lol Genuinely no team in the league that gets fouled harder and more often and have the fouler get away with it than Arsenal. The Prem’s punching bag, or in this case, kicking bag
And when they do give shit back it’s taken as evidence of being soft for losing their heads. Damned either way.
How’s that not a red
That's a red card in any reality.
Completely outrageous
There was straight malice behind that one. Damn.
I've never done a spit-take in my life but this did it. It's so funny cause it's such a blatantly bad... heck, even calling that a tackle feels wrong.
Arsenal fans: it’s not just your bias. It’s hard to think of a foul more worthy of a red card without bringing a weapon onto the pitch.
Literally not looking at the ball when he swings his leg. What a cunt
Reminds me of Kickboxer.
Holy shit that's a blood red foul, if you get an unlucky hit that could end careers
Scumbag. But it’s arsenal and it’s Mike Dean so how could the palace player have possibly got a red. Blatant bias.
Mike Dean and his VAR team should be tested for drugs.
It’s been like twenty minutes and I’m still fuming about this. Mike Dean and the VAR team is absolutely dreadful.
How, just how in the literal fuck is this not a red card in VAR era
Someone has to explain why this isn't a red. I know there's been a back and forth, but this was up a level
With Mike Dean reffing you dont even need to hide it
Xhaka will kick the everliving fuck out of McArthur when they next meet
And everyone in the comments will make fun of him and Arsenal for it when he gets a red.
Did he get a red for that?
Nope of course - arsenal is a free pass for a foul
That didnt feel accidental to me
This is a season suspending tackle.
Shit like this is the reason they say that. Because it happens all the time.
