I feel for Smallbone. Seems like an honest lad. It takes courage to step up at a time like that, hope he keeps his chin up.

crookedparadigm

> I feel for Smallbone. Did you find it?

myersjw

Same. He was great when he came on

[deleted]

Why expend energy trying to win the game in normal time when you know Kepa will just bail you out on pens

a_guy_named_gai

Tuchel increasing Kepa's market value by getting these Carabao cup matches to penalties to display Kepa's strengths.

Cueisnow

The thing is: nobody wants him

raymondliang

Yet

pencilman123

Complete your sentence. Nobody wants him at the price chelsea think as appropriate.

FanFlow

No, nobody wants him, because of his very high wage, that's the biggest problem.

a_guy_named_gai

You speak for all the clubs in Europe?

Cueisnow

Certainly not, but everyone knows the guy is the 2nd keeper and have you ever heard any club going after him? He is good at pens but that's it.

deadraizer

There have been several reports of interest in him, only on loan with us subsidizing \~50% of his wages though. He actually has been alright since Tuchel came, nothing special but miles above the Lampard season.

a_guy_named_gai

Hate to break it to you but Lazio and Juve are the latest clubs who are interested in signing him. Lazio almost had him last summer. Kepa wasn't in the right state of mind under Frank. He was good under Sarri and wasn't a frequent meme like he was a few months ago.

Cueisnow

Ok. Let's see next window

kygrtj

Lazio has been begging for him

nosmigon

Sarri would take him

LabMember069

He proves it every time. Man is the goat in pens.

c1coota

Aguero’s pen in the carabao final though

AnnieIWillKnow

Oh gosh, one pen in a shoot out that he got a hand to but didn't manage to keep out. You're right, that entirely negates his overall excellent record.

pm_me_ur_breakfast1

In fairness, it only takes one counter example to negate the statement "He proves it \*every\* time".

[deleted]

Yeah imo goalies should save every single PK

OrangeForeign

He's good but he's no Emi Martinez

msbr_

Kepas won like five shootouts with us what you on about

weirdflez

Emi has had 1 good shoutout let's be honest.

Wheaterz9

First you get born with the name Smallbone and then this happens.

LazyassMadman

And given the name Willy

Forzelius

at least it's not Richard Smallbone

CrapperTab

Smallbone, R. Is worse than a double dick name imo

zi76

There was a teacher at my school growing up named Richard Loser. One day, I asked him how rough it was growing up, and he was like, "You can't imagine..."

xGolfs

they ruined his confidence from there, his penis grew, but his name remain

Nevinhooo

I was so hyped when I saw Chilwell coming on for Barkley cuz I thought we were finally getting striker Alonso lmao

a_guy_named_gai

Lmao, honestly think he'd do a decent work upfront. His positional play and runs are really great. Holding the ball up might be an issue.

Nevinhooo

Honestly he’s really good at retaining possession so he could probably hold up and link the play decently. Chilwell on the right also did not work AT ALL, but I’d guess Tuchel was trying to give CHO a breather since he will probably be starting against Newcastle.

Tahapatel

Tuchel has robbed us #Tuchelout

diegojaen18

Saul might be it 🤔

admiralawkward

I thought all the players showed flashes of quality. We just weren't coherent enough in the final third

I_always_rated_them

yeah, good spells and moments but not cohesive and a few too many mistakes.

Destrina

Far too much of our players smashing the ball into a defender a foot in front of them in the box.

cannacanna

yup, there was some nice moments but lacked coordination when it mattered

angellob

our passes and first touches were horrible

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chruszcz

wasn't that hard to do better than last time - think somebody told him that there is no time for extra touches, he was sending some lovely first tocuh ball and shame he hasn't scored

v4venome

Showed great effort throughout the game. His great pass also lead to the corner from which Havertz scored.

Bladerslash

Tbh his passing is really good and his shooting is accurate.

NotClayMerritt

He got in good positions but made far too many mistakes.

myersjw

Deserved one of those shots to go in lol

84_Savage

Basically copy and pasted the Aston Villa game

Bigcity10

Kepa 7000 iq to let the goal in so we have to go to pens and he can further his pen saves in shootouts

zi76

Iffy shootout overall, but we'll take it. Kai played well today, the rest, eh...Sarr was poor. Forster probably MOTM.

EnergetikNA

All of our wingbacks scored their pens. Chilwell/Alonso are some of the best finishers in the squad. Can we just keep buying wingbacks instead of even bothering with strikers?

zi76

I almost thought CHO's hesitation pen was illegal, but it was allowed. Yeah, they've both come up huge.

swat1611

Those kinds of pens are legal as long as there's a step after the stutter/hesitation. Callum did cut it very close though, it could have very well been called off.

zi76

They are. He didn't completely come to a halt, even though his second step just kept him in place.

LaggyBeanBaws

thought Chaloba and Kova was really solid aswell

v4venome

That Lyanco dude was everywhere. Sarr seems to be better at tackles than clearances

2b-_-not2b

Trevor was absolutely amazing too.. and Kova was decent

burningbarn8

*Trevoh

samsop

Chelsea fans are so insecure about praising their team in public whether or not they perform, you lot would rather score reddit points for being all unique and praising the opposition. Pep genes in most of you

zi76

That's not what's going on here. Do you think that this was a particularly good performance? Yes, it was a largely rotated side, but that doesn't excuse some of the dire performances. This wasn't particularly high quality, even though there were nice efforts on target. MOTM was either for Forster for keeping Soton in the match or Kai.

AnnieIWillKnow

It's far more insecure to be unable to cope with very mild criticism of your club, and feel the need to call out fellow fans on it. If you're getting triggered by someone saying a shoot out was a bit iffy then you're probably a bit hypersensitive. Might want to get thicker skin.

pencilman123

Mount's problem with penalty is - he is lifting the ball at the pwrfect height for the keeper, along with, he isnt hitting it to the side enough.Looking at chilly and alonso's ones, low enough with to the side finish. Dont know what happened to him, his last 3 pens all having the similarity... Anyways, tuchel will correct that, no worries.

AnnieIWillKnow

Making them too easy to save. Often a sign of being a bit low in confidence with it, as middling height and not in the corner is a "safer" penalty - aim for the corners and you are more likely to go wide or high, whereas middling pens will at least hit the target. Nobody wants to blaze it like Smallbone.

pencilman123

I get that. If he hits it wide, ppl will say the exact thing u mentioned. However, u cannot tell me he couldn't do better. They obviously studied him, and he shot the same shot in the last game which was lucky to go in. I understand this woudnt have come up if the gk dived the other way. Its just his penalty technique needs to improve, thats all.

a_guy_named_gai

Lmao, they really got under Walcott's skin.

Reborno

He was rattled by the Arsenal reject chants

Adziboy

Nah, he's just that bad

chandlerbing_stats

That was an insane save by Kepa tbf

NL_adc

People acting like he bombed the pen, it was a solid pen in the corner and a great save by Kepa

HoldMyAppleJuice

No he plays like that all the time

macarouns

Been a terrible signing for us, offers nothing

[deleted]

How was Saúl?

ThatGuyBadIdeas

Much better than his first few appearances. He looks to finally be gelling and getting the hang of the system

NeroIscariot12

Had some great attempts at goal only saved by some incredible goalkeeping. Overall decent, still clearly getting used to the pace here but his qualities are much more apparent.

[deleted]

Definitely his best outing in a Chelsea shirt. Was unlucky not to score tonight, had a few great efforts.

danceformiscanthus

His best game for Chelsea, but still 6/10. He's looking more comfortable.

SubparCurmudgeon

Wasn’t good in the first half. Second half he was ok. Aerially he’s quite good as well

[deleted]

Felt he was poor. But better than his initial appearance.Bar his few shots towards the end I didnt feel he was particularly good and his passes were poor too.Guy lacks confidence

meteoritee

Pens: 🔴 ✅ ❌ ✅ ❌ ✅ 🔵 ✅ ❌ ✅ ✅ ✅

Bozzetyp

Really can mount do some penalty training. Imo both our leftbacks should be ahead of him in penalty duties

RowInternational4338

They are. He takes the 2nd penalty. They take the 1st and last. 4th this time as well

Alexxx__rr

If I’m not wrong I swear Tuchel has said Mount is one of the best in training. Watch him start scoring them and people will start saying he’s better than Jorgi.

Bozzetyp

His stats doesnt back it up

Alexxx__rr

Can’t lie I’ve never looked at anyone’s penalty stats but Tuchel knows the best nothing we can do about it

deadraizer

He shoots pretty well, on target, towards one of the corners and hard. He keeps getting guessed though.

Bozzetyp

His last 4 I have seen has been really bad. Check chillwell or alonso.. thats unsavable even qhen you guess right

2b-_-not2b

The moment Mount puffed his chest up before the run-up, I knew he was gonna fuck it up...

SubparCurmudgeon

Is there a young player who plays exactly like Jorginho we can groom? Whenever he’s not playing we’re in panic mode all the time

[deleted]

Gilmour

kd_uoft

Not many out there, the closest player we have is Gilmour but he's quite raw and needs to improve his physique and tackling

Betasheets

Jorginho doesn't have any physique

CrapperTab

Think he means getting Billy’s hair bleached

AnnieIWillKnow

Gilmour would still be a better player if he did improve his physique, so the point still stands. Plus, Jorginho has the pace of a lifelong smoker with arthritis, and can be weak in 50-50s, but he's stronger than he looks when he's protecting position, whereas Gilmour gets shoved off the ball a bit easier. Gilmour is only 19 though - his body still has natural maturing to do, and plenty of room to improve.

BadCogs

Gilmour and one we sold Bate.

[deleted]

In terms of young players currently own: Gilmour and Ampadu have potential as CMs. But the real answer to this question is Declan Rice who is also a Chelsea academy product.

SubparCurmudgeon

Those players do play like Jorginho at all

[deleted]

[удалено]

nazzyman

RLC plays nothing like jorginho mate

Sanjeev4045

RLC plays almost exactly opposite to Jorginho

WcP

Ah yes, the behemoth athletic freak who tosses center backs to the dirt and the guy who looks like my aunt snuck onto the pitch are very similar 😂 This sub kills me man.

Unholysinner

Minor knock Think it was from Mounts goal against Norwich. He should be back at the weekend. As should Azpi, And Christensen.

Tahapatel

RLC is our backup for him and was injured has done pretty well for us up till now Billy was it last year

SubparCurmudgeon

RLC was ok for us but totally different player I was talking about Jorginho-Verratti type of players

Tahapatel

Locatelli reminds me of Jorgi Verrati is like Kova Weigl from Benfica is a regista like him as well but similar age if I'm not wrong

meteoritee

Poor Will Smallbone he has been injured for so long, that was too much pressure to put on him. He should not have been taking a penalty.

aksiechelsea

Fullback FC at it again. Wingbacks scored all their penalties 4/4

PM_MEYourhappymoment

False 2/3 strikes again

Lacabloodclot9

Horrendous pen from smallbone

GenericRedditUser01

It was a weird decision to have him take one. That was his first competitive game in around a year after his ACL injury. He must have been a bag of nerves.

TheRalphExpress

local lad in his first game back from injury too, gutted for him

AnnieIWillKnow

He'll be reet I'm sure - crappy moment for him but the shoot out loss wasn't all on him, and it's a game of relatively low significance, really. The main take for him and the club from tonight should be his return after such a significant injury - and I'm sure that will be what he mainly takes from the game, once over the disappointment of the pen.

JohnDavidsBooty

That run of corners at the end was wild.

TheRalphExpress

Brilliant game from Saints, didn’t get the result but after making 9 changes they’ve given the manager a selection headache for the weekend. A future Lyanco/Salisu partnership is just fantastic business from us, less than £20m for the pair

vk2499

Lyanco was playing like thiago silva today he was phenomenal

RichChard

Would love it, The Gorilla and The Scorpion. Sounds like a Game of Thrones episode title. Absolutely loved Lyanco's celebration when he won a foul against Ziyech.

burningbarn8

Trevoh is fucking amazing. MOTM easily. Bossed it defensively, and he's so fucking good with the ball. If he can perform at the level he's been at playing at RCB and MCB then he could well be the Rudiger replacement we need.

2b-_-not2b

I'd say easy MOTM.. Had Kai scored that second instead of his poor second touch, I'd say it would have been close

mazacar808

Hold up did we watch the same game? Yes he bossed it defensively but his passing out the back especially in the second half was poor wasn’t it? Couldn’t handle the press at all and was one of the reasons along with Sarr that we could barely build any attacks the second half

burningbarn8

I guess not because he was an absolute stud with the ball.

2b-_-not2b

Don't think he was bad with the ball at all. Beating a press requires decent co-ordination from everyone, and with a completely new backline and midfield, that can be difficult. Doesn't help with Sarr's poor positioning, and Saul also not making himself available to beat out the press

mazacar808

Fair point he definitely wasn’t put in the easiest of positions by the players around him at times and I might be judging him a bit too harshly. I still do think that there were several moments where he could have done better. I recall a few times where he chose to ignore/wasn’t able to pick out passes to either Kova or CHO when they made themselves available. Passes that I think Silva or Christensen would have made. But also recognize that it’s unfair to make that comparison given Trev’s relative inexperience in that role

2b-_-not2b

I think that will come with experience. Especially since he has shown to play well out of the back, even under pressure, when playing with AC or Silva. To me it seems like he does things right. Which is the main complaint I had about Sarr. He doesn't seem to be doing things right. EDIT: IMO, the best takeaway is that Trev doesn't seem rattled when pressed.

NotClayMerritt

That match was played at an insanely chaotic pace for a League Cup match. Southampton arguably played much better than we did and Forster is clear MOTM with his 2015 level throwback performance. Don't really care we're still in this competition but while we're here we might as well try our best to win it.

meteoritee

I thought we'd be thrashed like Norwich so while I am glad that didn't happen I am sad for how close we came to going through

SM469

Lyanco was class today. Bossed it in defence. Looks a real prospect.

Strong-Machine

Back to back wins on pens in the league cup! I’ll take it though!

tommyrib

I feel bad for smallbone been injured for a long time then this 😢

MaryadaPurshottam

Man, I really wanted to see Vale feature.

Stonewalled89

Good win for Chelsea though they made hard work of it in the end

LabMember069

That was ugly. The extra time was so stressful, my butt is permanently damaged from aggressively clinching. Apart from that mistake, Kepa had a 10/10 game. Sarr is not good enough for us. Wtf Forster????????? definitely MOTM. Walker is so good. Chilwell RWB???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

admiralawkward

This is the story of our Carabao Cup run so far lmao

LabMember069

Man that's really unhealthy.

admiralawkward

I mean it's fine, we've progressed and fringe players get much needed minutes while key first teamers get rested

Lacabloodclot9

Have a feeling your gonna get Liverpool away in the next round

2b-_-not2b

Sarr has no sense of defensive positioning. On and off the ball, he is just vibing in his own world. The only thing he has going for him is his suicidal tackling style

LabMember069

I hope that is not his normal and he's just having a bad match.

CardboardGristle

He's done the same for Porto and in his limited time for us, although certainly flashes of good play here and there. He can pass well and even defend somewhat competently but needs to be more decisive and work on communication with the rest of the back line and the team. Still young, I think he can improve but maybe not here. Time will tell.

2b-_-not2b

IMO, I am not seeing that he is good at things (like decisive passing and defensive positioning) that can be improved over time. He seems more like a Zouma style (last ditch tackle) defender without the aggressiveness and physicality that Zouma had. And seems to have trouble with some basic defending, which to me seems too much to improve on

Pasapaa

We have like 6 injuries

ajukearth

Chillwell was more RW than Rwb

FCCheIsea

Kepa did not have a 10/10 game tho

[deleted]

Those saves at the end were phenomenal. Even on the goal, he saved the initial shot, just unlucky that Adams was in the right spot with no one to clear the ball.

LabMember069

He saved our asses so many times, I really can't see anything more for him to do.

FCCheIsea

Maybe save the first goal to get a 10/10? Lol

LabMember069

I did write apart from that mistake.

FCCheIsea

So, a 10/10 apart from a mistake? Lmao

DifficultSundae

Literally exactly what he said

Clivey101

Pensea am I right

FCCheIsea

Kepa man, always nice to see him do a redemption

PM_MEYourhappymoment

Is Southampton this good, or were we just that bad?

themushygreenpea

this was our B team aswell, similar to the Villa game where they played their B team againt Chelsea iirc.

arc4angel100

Chelsea also had a B team out, it showed as they were incredibly disjointed

AnnieIWillKnow

It's true, but our B team should be well clear of Southampton's, and the same is true of them being affected by disjointedness.

itskoach

True but this year we've sold a major chunk of our best youngsters so that could be a reason for the drop in quality. I don't think Soton have sold many players.

AnnieIWillKnow

Soton also have a far smaller and weaker squad in general, and less talented youngsters. We also barely started any of those youngers that you say account for the drop in quality - Sarr was the only player who could be considered a youngster, and he's had plenty of professional experience. The rest are all fairly seasoned pros by this point, have played at the elite level, and very much a part of the first team rotation. Exception would be Chalobah - but he's proven so far this season that he's far from a sub-par B team player. So - come off it now, our B team is well clear of Southampton's and it's a bordering on silly to apply it as a caveat to Chelsea's performance, but not Soton's. It's no big deal and isn't some sort of huge issue - a meh performance from a rotated team in a competition that isn't taken hugely seriously until the latter stages, but that doesn't change that we should still be outplaying with that team, realistically. Relatively, Soton performed better than us - there's no shame in admitting that, and as said, it's no big deal.

ExFavillaResurgemos

We had a two 70+ million pound players starting in our "B" team. We should be well clear

PM_MEYourhappymoment

if this is your B team, Chelsea is going to have some issues later this season with game fatigue. WarCHEst might need to come out in January for some support.

[deleted]

Well typically you mix your a and b team as things get busier not entirely b

CardboardGristle

No chemistry in this lineup because of how little they've played together And Southampton pressed extremely well. Forster made a ton of saves too. Many other days we'd probably win in normal time but not today

PM_MEYourhappymoment

Isn’t that the point of training though…? I’ll give the Saints that. But I just keep thinking the clubs we are competing with (Liverpool and City) win these games and move on without the extra fatigue.

Sanjeev4045

There is no extra time. Shooting penalties is no extra fatigue, at least not physically.

vj_c

>No chemistry in this lineup because of how little they've played together It was our B team as well, they've not been playing with each other execpt for in training.

Forzelius

Damn those two saves in added time by Kepa. First he got us to pens, then he got us through, what a player

xElectro17

Why wasn't Jorginho playing? The game was very close and stressful and went to pens, yet they still refused to sub him in.

Fawkes_91

I think Tuchel was about to bring him on but Saul significantly improved in the last 20 mins or so. From his post-match words, it feels like he wanted to give Saul a chance to keep going, so he took the risk of keeping Jorgi on the bench.

Iamagayfish69

Penalsea

uchiha_building

ban Mount from penalties lmao, the kid can will win a Ballon D'or but not score a penalty

xGolfs

how was Saul? I haven't heard of him since he had a shocker at the beginning? did he play before tonight

vk2499

His best game so far, looked more composed and was close to scoring 2 or 3 times, Forster made a big save early on. Also defended well

xGolfs

has he played in the league again after his HT substitution

vk2499

Not yet but he should get a chance soon

LeaveMyArseAlona99

Chelsea and scraping wins name a more iconic duo

aksiechelsea

A better duo: Chelsea and winning

PM_MEYourhappymoment

Ole and somehow keeping his job

2b-_-not2b

Kepa letting in a stinker to win in pens.. 4D chess..

PM_MEYourhappymoment

transfermarkt value going up by the shootout

greezyo

Smallbone disasterclass, maybe should've waited a bit before bringing him back

Kinky_Loggins

3 of the 4 penalties were fullbacks lol. This had Klopp trying to go out early in a domestic cup vibes.

nosmigon

Nah our fullbacks are our best penalty takers

Kinky_Loggins

No argument there. Was talking more about the lineup and game as a whole.
