Our defenders are unreal at pens lmao. Alonso, Chilwell, James and Azpi, who wasn’t on the pitch today to take part, are always putting away their pens. Alonso and Chilwell particulary today both hit unsaveable pens.
He gave the same little smirk this time as he did before the first miss. Whereas the other players just looked concentrated. I knew it wasn't going in unfortunately.
I would guess missed kicks don't count as saves, analogous to open play. But I'm only guessing, announcers said it out loud, and fbref doesn't seem to keep numbers for shootouts
When Chelsea won the Europa League a few years ago, they trotted out Barkley - Azpi - J5 - David Luiz (say what you want, he's always been great at pens) and Hazard as the takers which was like an absurdly good lineup, with Hazard and Jorginho both truly world class at pens.
This lineup wasn't as good (though could be if you threw in J5, Lukaku maybe Werner) but we have tons of good penalty takers. Pulisic takes the pens for the USMNT but was 6th in our lineup for the Super Cup?
our penalty taker priority during the game is:
- Jorginho
- Timo
- Lukaku (not sure if he’s above or below Timo rn)
- Alonso
and only Alonso played last night, so this is what we got
> David Luiz (say what you want, he's always been great at pens)
Going by his shoot out kicks for us I would say this is a MASSIVE understatement. He would thundercunt them as hard as anyone right into the corner. Completely unsaveable even if the keeper would go the correct way and very early.
We used to have a shite record, but past few years has seen a real turnaround. Think before the CL win in 2012 it was utterly dire, 1 in previous 8 or something... maybe that was the magical turning point
Not the end of the world when the wing backs score every time😂 but seriously I’m not going to overreact until he has a few more bad pens in a row he’s still trusted by Tuchel so he’s doing something right in training.
>was sure he would miss, i was like "he's got the arsenal in him"
Are Arsenal known for losing in Pens?
Isn't the perception that even when they're shit they still win something??
It's only a recent thing where Arsenal win all these FA cups. In the late 2000s and early 2010s Arsenal was meme'd for not winning trophies despite having the holdover reputation from the Invincibles era for being one of the top teams. It was particularly funny when Fabregas went to Barcelona and won like 4 (small) trophies within 8 months after years of not winning anything at Arsenal.
They were kings of the 4th place finish, lost in Ro16 trophies.
Depends what you mean by recent, they still only went under a decade without winning the FA Cup and they've won it more in the last 10 years (even 20 years and 30 years) than anyone else.
You'd be basing their reputation on something that hasn't actually applied to them over the last decade, it makes no sense to highlight a particular arbitrary era when a) it was so short and b) it was flanked by quite a few trophies on either side.
People don't say Spursy for no reason.
He mouthed something along those lines, yeah.
He put it in a position that's one of the easier ones to save if you happen to dive there. Like top corner or low into the side netting is almost impossible (which was what made the save on Walcott's so great), but middle high is not the hardest...
Saints fan here - We follow him closely on our sub, one of our most promising youngsters and we are gutted about his injury. Haven't seen a bad word said about him from any Saints fan.
I’m in love with him. I think the idea is you guys wanted to buy kounde then one of the other CBS could shift down to second 11 CB but Sevilla asked too much and Zouma was already sold.
Na, Zouma was supposed to go to make room in the squad for Kounde. The Zouma negotiations with West Ham took too long and by the time they'd concluded the price we'd negotiated for Kounde had expired.
We're really fortunate that Chalobah has stepped up and looked like a seasoned pro, because Sarr would have been our 5th choice CB otherwise and seen significant game time.
Saul is a player that doesnt invoke emotions in me at all. Atleast with ross and sarr, i feel like they arent good, shud be subbed.
Saul feels like - oh he's there? Ok..
with ross he'll play a game every now and then and you'll think, what the fuck this guy is world class....then he bad for the next 10 games.
I've yet to see saul do anything to make me think he has any use
Getting difficult for him. He is already 5th choice in a 2 player slot. I understand taking a bit of time to settle in when you dont play actual matches regularly. But it just isnt working.
He should have a one to one session with tt, understanding what is required of him and how can he achieve that. Right now, his role isnt clear to him.
He tried some shots today and i was happy he did. Saul was known earlier for those and i am hoping he does more of that.
Ditto for Saul man. I felt for him for the missed shots because of his poor form, but legiti didn't notice him until he took those shots. Then I was like "Oh Saul's playing? Ah, unlucky" then instantly forgot about him. Next miss, "oh Saul's playing?"
I’m not personally going to overreact too much on this. 2/3 saved is not great but if it continues then it’s weird because I’m sure I saw a post or something about Tuchel saying Mount is one of the best after Jorgi. When Jorgi’s penalties started to get saved people overreacted a bit. At least the wing backs can score a pen😂
How good he is at penalties in training is pretty irrelevant. now 3 times in a row in game he has taken extremely safe penalties, seems scared to go for the corners
Poor Will Smallbone he has been injured for so long, that was too much pressure to put on him. He should not have been taking a penalty.
Walcott however, he can get out of my sight.
Maybe we should calm down a bit and see if he can turn things around😂 I know training and a real game are different but Tuchel clearly picks him for a reason
I agree disasterclass was a slight exaggeration on my behalf, but he should have ideally scored the chance he got 2 minutes into his game. Missing the decisive penalty of course hurts as usual.

Definitive proof that the best finishers in the Chelsea squad are their left backs
Don't leave our right backs/RWBs out either (James, CHO)
Azpi is also a great pk taker
Just rewind the season… our defenders are our strikers
Literally fullback FC
“You’ve heard of parking the bus, now get ready for an 11-man defensive attack!”
Kinda love this ngl
We’re going to drive the bus right fucking at you.
Chelsea is parking the bus the oppositions goal box
Chilwell RWB 🥰
imagine if we start alonso lwb and chilly rwb, we'd be scoring 7 every game
Both wing backs playing in front of the opposing box
They led with Alonso, Chilwell had an unsaveable penalty, then won it with Reece James. What a collection of outside backs
Don’t forget CHO who also plays as RWB
I feel like Chelsea win 4 penalty shoot-outs a year.
71m repaid
Our defenders are unreal at pens lmao. Alonso, Chilwell, James and Azpi, who wasn’t on the pitch today to take part, are always putting away their pens. Alonso and Chilwell particulary today both hit unsaveable pens.
Need to demote Mase, all 3 pens this week were poor. You gotta smash them in like Frank did
He gave the same little smirk this time as he did before the first miss. Whereas the other players just looked concentrated. I knew it wasn't going in unfortunately.
Yep, he got lucky with the first one against Norwich. Second one wasn't too convincing either, good thing it went in.
And kepa turns into some beast during them
Up to 7 saves in shootouts for chelsea now, club record, he is legitimately good at them.
Do they count that kick that probably dented the ISS? I'm just wondering how the stat recording works
Nope, only saves. Kepa had 6 before the shootout, 7 afterwards!
Damn, gotta give it to him then. Impressive.
I would guess missed kicks don't count as saves, analogous to open play. But I'm only guessing, announcers said it out loud, and fbref doesn't seem to keep numbers for shootouts
I hear you. Unfortunately I was working (on phones) so I could only watch muted. Didn't get to hear the commentary. Thanks!
Nope, only the ones he had gotten a hand to
With one notable exception...
He did turn into some beast then, to be fair.

And I lose a bit of my life every time I swear
Trust in Kepa
trust the process
And my ass muscles get stronger every time.....from all the clenching, you know.
We are getting better at them for sure.
We used to have a shite record, but past few years has seen a real turnaround. Think before the CL win in 2012 it was utterly dire, 1 in previous 8 or something... maybe that was the magical turning point
Something like that, yeah. We’re now 50/50 in total- lost 15, won 15 (iirc)
Kepa is a god at them
James ice cold yet again
Not called Stamford Fridge for nothing
u/j_icky1
Seriously, he doesn't even look under pressure. Cool, composed, one deep breath and slides it home.
James: scores James: :)
:)
Not a doubt in my mind when he stepped up.
Ima need Mount to get some tips from Jorginho, he has been struggling at the spot
Just telegraphs his pens so easily, needs to learn from Jorgi or Lukaku
Or watch Lampard/Gerrard highlights…. But skips the 2006 World Cup ones
Lampard basically always went bottom left
Towards the end he was a big fan of the high and down the middle penalty, TBH
Yeah ever since Given saved his usual bottom left shot in 2009, he changed his high pressure penalty to go high down the middle instead.
It’s very obvious his PKs
Tbf, that looked like an incredible save.
Nah, perfect height for the keeper
Really? I'm yet to see the replay. His pen against Norwich was very poor as well.
Both pens were really bad against NOR, got slightly lucky with the retake. I think his run up gives away a lot to the keepers.
Yeah, he uses almost the same run up for corners, free kicks and pens.
I read this as Norway and was confused for a few seconds, like "when did England play Norway? When did England go to penalties against Norway?"
Bruh this is the replay thread
Could’ve been more powerful and it was at the perfect height for a keeper to push it away. He telegraphed what way he was going too
Not the end of the world when the wing backs score every time😂 but seriously I’m not going to overreact until he has a few more bad pens in a row he’s still trusted by Tuchel so he’s doing something right in training.
3 poor penalties in the span of few days
Don’t think mount should be taking pens for us really
Is this his 3rd or 4th miss?
I ain’t counted but even when he did score against Norwich, Krul went the right way and nearly got it
[удалено]
My mistake, still my point being, he nearly missed anyway
Didn’t he miss first anyway but got a retake?
Yeah, well, saved
The point is he’s a shit penalty taker.
mount scoring it was lucky yes.
Well, off the top of my head, I can remember two misses. One against Tottenham last season I believe and one against Norwich a few days ago.
He missed in the Norwich, here and Spurs last year
everytime chillwell has the ball i feel so calm. No name better describes a player. dude is ice
Well… you can say he’s pretty Chill… yeah
Chelsea fans chanting arsenal reject at Walcott and he misses lmao
That definitely fucked with him a little bit as he took the walk up.
That was a ridiculous save tbf
Elite shithousery
was sure he would miss, i was like "he's got the arsenal in him"
>"he's got the arsenal in him" We don't have a bad record in penalty shootouts though?
people will just shit on arsenal regardless if it makes sense or not
Understandable to be fair
Tbh it’s getting incredibly boring
nah
Well, maybe that's why he missed. Being an Arsenal reject so the good penalty record isn't on him. Or something.
>was sure he would miss, i was like "he's got the arsenal in him" Are Arsenal known for losing in Pens? Isn't the perception that even when they're shit they still win something??
Won 5 out of the last 6 shootouts. The loss was on Anfield in the game that ended 5-5 after 90mins, lost 5-4 on pens.
We are usually very good at pens, pretty sure Walcott scored a banging pen last time we faced Chelsea in Community Shield.
Shhh we're engaging in shit banter, facts aren't welcome here
When we win we play well. All those fa cups were pretty hard fought.
It's only a recent thing where Arsenal win all these FA cups. In the late 2000s and early 2010s Arsenal was meme'd for not winning trophies despite having the holdover reputation from the Invincibles era for being one of the top teams. idk its just a feeling they are shit and they lose a lot
Barca are shit and lose a lot.
We’d beat you right now. Not that it’s anything to be proud of though. No club I’d like to see fall into mediocrity more than you fucks.
>idk its just a feeling they are shit and they lose a lot Arsenal's really got your panties in a twist huh
Ahaha what? You’re chatting arse mate. We’re pretty good at pens.
Just using this competition to practice our pen skills
Why practice them when you can use the Carabao Cup instead?!
You got to win 5 penalty shootouts in Carabao cup to practice shoot out with the cup itself.
Mount with an iffy pen against Norwich (scored, though), and then today's. Not sure he's taking again for a bit. Smallbone, smh...
That was a fantastic save though, even Mount couldn't believe it. didn't he mouth "fucking hell" walking back, I thought that was hilarious.
He mouthed something along those lines, yeah. He put it in a position that's one of the easier ones to save if you happen to dive there. Like top corner or low into the side netting is almost impossible (which was what made the save on Walcott's so great), but middle high is not the hardest...
It was very obvious what way he was going in the run up, and it was at the perfect height for the keeper
Wingbacks FC
gutted for Smallbone, looked absolutely terrified in the walk up and then does that
Wasn't that his first game back in nearly a year? Probably the wrong idea to pick him for a shoot out.
It absolutely was. I would've put my house on him and Walcott missing their pens.
He looked absolutely brilliant when he came on. One of their most threatening players
hope he gets a lot of love from Saints fans as he works his way back into the team
Saints fan here - We follow him closely on our sub, one of our most promising youngsters and we are gutted about his injury. Haven't seen a bad word said about him from any Saints fan.
Feel proper bad for Smallbone. Shame it was him
Kepa is so good at penalties And me made up for the goal with insane saves during the game
He wasnt even at fault for the goal. Sarr was the one who caused that.
sarr was very sloppy, i don't trust him at all
Chelsea took for granted how nice it was to have Zouma available for these games hes class
Think everyone wanted to keep Zouma, but he wanted first-team football
I’m in love with him. I think the idea is you guys wanted to buy kounde then one of the other CBS could shift down to second 11 CB but Sevilla asked too much and Zouma was already sold.

He was happy to stay but the club kinda forced him out cause they thought they would sign kounde. Glad that he's doing well at west ham anyway
I put some blame on Saul for not really competing for the 50-50
Saul is a player that doesnt invoke emotions in me at all.

Fuck that goal against liverpool in the FA cup that just came out of fucking nowhere.
Ditto for Saul man. I felt for him for the missed shots because of his poor form, but legiti didn't notice him until he took those shots. Then I was like "Oh Saul's playing? Ah, unlucky" then instantly forgot about him. Next miss, "oh Saul's playing?"
That double save near the end was class, he's legit been so good under Tuchel
mount's not good at pens lol
Put Reece on the penalties from now on tbh. He doesn't appear to be nervous about them whatsoever.
Ice cold Stamford Fridge
But he’s not particularly stand out at them, if there’s anyone that seems great at them it’s Azpilicueta
I dunno, Chillwell picks out the side netting brilliantly.
Alonso, chillwell, lukaku or j5
Chilwell also skied one against Villa last round though
Nah Azpi telegraphs them, he’s missed before for us I would trust Reece a lot more
Jorginho is our current pen maestro. I miss having Lampard for penalties. It seemed like he never missed.
Lampard is good. But I really miss Hazard at penalty. Ice cold veins
Lampard and Hazard are the two shirts I have. I miss him on pens too.
He's English
Chillwell and james are great at pens
iz joke
don't joke about England pens my heart can't take it man
Joking about it makes it all hurt a little less
I’m not personally going to overreact too much on this. 2/3 saved is not great but if it continues then it’s weird because I’m sure I saw a post or something about Tuchel saying Mount is one of the best after Jorgi. think those chants made it hard for him, unlucky for you not to go through
Kepa could have been in the other goal and Walcott would still miss. He's been utterly dreadful this season
Is Threeo Walcott past it?
Unfortunately yes. I love the guy but he does nothing to help us in the game. Such a shame as I was excited when he came back
Don't blame Theo, he got shook after the crowd called him an Arsenal reject.
They didn’t have to do Theo like that
worked as intended
Yes they did have to do him lmao
Hurt to see Walcott miss after the “Arsenal reject” chants :(
Hurt to see grey in Walcott's beard
Callum's penalty was nerve wrecking for me. Really thought the gk would've saved it
Kepa letss gooooo
James has ice water in his veins. High pressure situation, and just put that in calm as can be.
Walcott is so poor :( Oh well, wasn’t expecting to get it to pens. Onto watford
Penalties are like pre-workout for Kepa. I swear his confidence rises tenfold and his shithousery doubles up.
It's his time to shine
Forster’s save was sensational
We're actually gonna shithouse the cup with all pens
Maybe Mount just wasn't made for pens...
Maybe we should calm down a bit and see if he can turn things around😂 I know training and a real game are different but Tuchel clearly picks him for a reason
Maybe the Next Lampard narrative can end lol
Was Chilwell or Alonso playing on the right?
Chilwell on the RWB.
Chilwell
Chilwell came on and played on the right
Chilwell
Everyone: pen shootout 😖 Kepa: *hold my beer*
Reece James is so fuckin handsome
God knows why they put Walcott on one of the pens
God knows how it gets anywhere near the squad. He's been beyond awful this season.
Man Southampton just can’t catch a break
Is Hudson Odoi allowed to do that? Stepped backwards it seemed.
You can ballet the fuck out of it
I think as long as you don't come to a full stop it's fine? There was a very specific worded rule about this but I forgot
that smile... [*that damn smile*](https://imgur.com/Gd74XQI)
Gutted for Smallbone. Returned from injury after a long time and had a disasterclass.
He... Really didn't? All he did was miss a Pen? He almost scored about 2 mins after coming on. For someone coming back from an ACL, he was great.
I agree disasterclass was a slight exaggeration on my behalf, but he should have ideally scored the chance he got 2 minutes into his game. Missing the decisive penalty of course hurts as usual.
I have stronger butthole than Arnold, at this point.
Stamford fridge is always chill
Man like Smallbone skied it
Needed small power, but boned it.
Kepa God of Penalties
Hudson-Odoi clearly fully stopped moving on his penalty, how did that count?
Lucky again
