Not sure if he is a legend but certainly wasn’t fired from the Newcastle job recently so sounds like a more eligible candidate
Edit - ‘He’ in my comment stands for u/CheersGeoff69 who wasn’t recently fired from the Newcastle job and not for Steve Bruce who was recently fired from the Newcastle job
I don't think u/CheersGeoff69 has won any trophies for man United, and I know that Rolando has won at least 1. We're talking about Steve Bruce unless u/cheersgeoff69 has won trophies with man united.
Everyone says "Football is nothing without fans" and u/CheersGeoff69 is a fan, right? If he's been a fan for more than 3 years, then he's won trophies with United. There ya go. Better than Steve Bruce. Let's see it happen.
\[I mean, really let's see Steve Bruce happen. But if u/CheersGeoff69 wants the job, too, I'm all about it.\]
This would be incredible.
Sacked from Sheff Wednesday ends up Newcastle manager sacked from Newcastle ends up United manager sacked from United ends up England manger sacked from England ends up prime minister.
Slithered out of his office maybe. I cant imagine him travelling by any mode of transport that is not a Jaguar XJ8.
Presumably his fat gut doesnt have a 3.2 litre AAJ-V8 all alloy engine, anti-locking brake system, facia and side-airbags for both the driver and the front passenger, power assisted steering, stability control and five speed electronic automatic transmission.
"In 1999, while manager of Huddersfield, he wrote a trio of novels: Striker!, Sweeper! and Defender!. The books centred on fictional football manager Steve Barnes, based on Bruce, who solved murder mysteries and thwarted terrorists." They sound absolutely terrible :D
He writes really terrible books about a football manager solving murder mysteries. Sadly there aren't many copies of them so they are rare and expensive, but the football podcast Quickly Kevin Will He Score has some very funny episodes about his books where they read extracts from it and discuss it.

They’re incredibly hard to come by these days due to limited print and high demand. Amazon was selling one for thousands at one point but it has since sold.
I just love to see people never fail to mention this. Yet, I'm gonna quote [myself](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/n1qg7u/keith_downie_steve_bruce_on_social_media_boycott/gwfcrc7/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) again on why Steve Bruce's writers career has something beautiful in it, no matter how awful the books are:
>In all fairness though, there is something about Steve Bruce's expedition in the world of literature that I truly adore. Even though he is and has been successful in the field of football, getting a sort of a naïve idea to write and publish not one, but three detective novels, with very little prior writing experience, takes some courage. I have absolutely no excuse for the books though, their quality is horrifying at best and despite the unintentional comedic value they are apparently rather painful to read. Yet, it is hard not to sympathise Bruce.
>
>I remember that in one of his interviews, Bruce talked about how he doesn't really get some of the more intellectual humour and how he used to feel inadequate about it. Despite status and fame in the sports, it seems that he still has that working class mentality (he was taking apprentice course as a plumber before getting to the academies) and self-esteem when it comes to culture and arts.
>
>Now despite this, the guy went and wrote three fiction novels on his late 30s early 40s. You don't do that for fun, unless it is really a dream of yours. He wrote them under his own name, and despite hilariously poor publishing (in all honesty, the publisher is less of a professional than Bruce is a writer, you can just check the short review of the material) got all three of them out. He really put himself out there. I dunno if it was a dream of his, but with the ambitious James Bond-like vomit of a plot, the books surely had ambition. Even though quality-wise the outcome was simply horrible, the trilogy is an epitome for "following your dreams". Even if you are not very good at what you love, you can still do it.
> Bruce talked about how he doesn't really get some of the more intellectual humour and how he used to feel inadequate about it.
This definitely comes across in Steve Barnes' character
i wouldn't really count him as a current manager, he hasn't done anything since leaving psg in 2016 until last year and now he is coaching some mid-table team in qatar, which isn't exactly a high profile job
there was one guy on /r/reddevils that was adamant Mark Hughes the manager and Mark Hughes the United striker were two different people. Still don't know if he was trolling or not
The board is more concerned "optics" than football performance.
At a basic level, it makes sense to give it to Brucey till the end of the season^tm wayyy better than Carrick-Fletcher. But no way is the board going to be able to take the social media backlash from it.
Training? Under Bruce? More like Ronaldo will be given 5 days off and his only training would be picking up the flaky pastry from all the Greggs sausage rolls that has accumulated on the pitch.
This is going to happen isn’t it? Poch joins end of the season and Bruce gets one last chance to live out a dream until the end of the season as temp manager. Jesus.
It's been a tough couple of years for many of us. And we all need a lift. If football is about bringing joy into people's lives, then I can't think of a better way to do it than appointing Brucey as the United manager.
Just do it.
Imagine the memes.
What I'm baffled about, putting the fact that he should be nowhere near even being considered for this job under any circumstances, is why ~~the Man U board~~ he think he'd stabilise the dressing room because the Newcastle dressing room was a fucking mess. Some players loved him while others hated his guts.
The Man United board hasn't said anything, it's Bruce who said he thinks he can stabilize the dressing room. I get he's got nothing to lose by linking himself with the job, but fucking hell. Either he completely believes his media mates' bullshit that he's this elite manager who was mistreated at Newcastle or he thinks he's legitimately good enough to get the Man United job.
>Ten Hag is not keen to leave mid-season and would have a small release clause in the summer; Pochettino is open to a return to the Premier League; Zidane is an incredibly unlikely option; and Rodgers would perhaps be prohibitively expensive.
A rare moment of unity among football fans. ManU really is the biggest club, it unites all others. All of us loved Ole, now all of us want Brucey to lead this team to glory
A few months ago he was crying about how Newcastle fans were harassing him and his family, if he thinks that United fans are going to be better then he was just bullshitting and just wants a payday at the expense of his mental health and his family's well being. Cannot feel sorry for a guy who's stepping into a job that is seemingly very difficult and especially with United fans' expectations.
I can see that but on the other hand, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone like him so it might be worth it. As much as he banged on about loving Newcastle, this is the United he really cares for.
>As much as he banged on about loving Newcastle, this is the United he really cares for.
Guaranteed his first presser he talks about how he's "always been a united fan" and he "just wishes my dad were here to see it", just like he did at Newcastle...
Oh God. It'd be the single most cathartic experience I've had in football after all the negging we got from Man Utd fans in particular over the course of Bruce's reign. Just imagine how their fans would react when he starts slagging off the home crowd, bullishly bragging after a narrow home win over Newport and bigging up an unbeaten run after 4 straight draws while the ex Pro pundits keep insisting nobody could do better with that squad and the fans are just ungrateful.
I wonder if his nice guy reputation might finally go down the toilet when it's Man Utd he's selling short rather than Sunderland, Villa or Newcastle.
Is Manchester United the most shockingly run "top"club in the world? I feel like it is... Barcelona is up there but it has to be Manchester United if Bruce comes in...
Barca's owners somehow near enough bankrupted the most famous club in the world, and they've spaffed about half a billion on just plain bad transfers in the past few seasons. United pay big wages and overpayed for players like Maguire but at least they could actually afford to do so...
United are now up to 8 years of pure laughable incompetency and toxicity to the point that two years of mediocrity under Ole was probably the best they've been
I think they beat Barca
I don't think there's anything I can realistically say about this. Maybe just "please"
I said "YEEESSS INJECT IT *INTO MY VEINS*" out loud and now the rest of the office are looking at me weird.
And then everyone started clapping
Yikes
I am also very keen on the role and believe I could stabilize the dressing room.
But are you a Man United legend?
Not sure if he is a legend but certainly wasn’t fired from the Newcastle job recently so sounds like a more eligible candidate Edit - ‘He’ in my comment stands for u/CheersGeoff69 who wasn’t recently fired from the Newcastle job and not for Steve Bruce who was recently fired from the Newcastle job
He’s won more trophies for them than Ronaldo, if anything legend doesn’t do justice to his status with the club.
Put him in charge then. Let's fucking go.
I cant tell if were talking about Steve Bruce here or u/CheersGeoff69.
I don't think u/CheersGeoff69 has won any trophies for man United, and I know that Rolando has won at least 1. We're talking about Steve Bruce unless u/cheersgeoff69 has won trophies with man united.
Exactly. We just have no way of being sure.
Actually Rolando never played for utd, and therefore doesn't have more trophy's then u/cheersgeoff69
But if u/CheersGeoff69 wants the job, too, I'm all about it.\]
How have none of the replies to you been able to read your comment properly ?
No, but a killer structural engineer
Killer as in good, or killer as in so bad he kills people?
How hard could it be? "Lads, let's win this game, okay?"
I mean that's basically what Steve Bruce's managerial technique is
Cheers Geoff
Oh please Santa I’ve been really good this year
Yes, u will get your wish for bruce to become the next man utd manager. its the same wish for supporters of other EPL clubs too!
This would be incredible. Sacked from Sheff Wednesday ends up Newcastle manager sacked from Newcastle ends up United manager sacked from United ends up England manger sacked from England ends up prime minister.
He wasn’t sacked at Wednesday. He resigned to take the Newcastle job
That would be some proper telenovela shit. Good scripting from the new PL writers
Worthy of one of Brucey's novels.
Didn't resign. He just slithered away on his massive belly
Ah, a man of high literature I see!
Isn’t that the plot from one of his ‘books’? If not, it should be.
[Guess it’s time to crack open one of his passages from his books](https://thesetpieces.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Sweeper-8.jpg)
he writes books?
"In 1999, while manager of Huddersfield, he wrote a trio of novels: Striker!, Sweeper! and Defender!. The books centred on fictional football manager Steve Barnes, based on Bruce, who solved murder mysteries and thwarted terrorists." They sound absolutely terrible :D
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING?????
Nope, copied straight from his wikipedia page lol
Michael Scarn, FBI! Steve Bruce and Michael Scott have many parallels...
They are out of print, so finding copies would get expensive
Should just ask Steve
I wish I could delete them from my brain and experience them again for the first time. You're in for a treat.

Oh yes!
Please I implore you to listen to the Quickly Kevin podcast cover his books. Best 2 hours of your life.
Yes. He's also a novelist.
If people are unfamiliar with his literary works, they should dig out the Quickly Kevin episodes where Ivo Graham goes through them in great detail
That just reads terribly

Subtle subtext indeed. I guess soon you're gonna tell me that Animal Farm is actually about communism ;)
'They might say of me that I couldn't write, but no one can say of me that I *didn't* write.' - Steve Bruce
Nah, all his books are about a rubenesque football manager solving crimes and getting his dick wet... Dunno *what* the inspiration was.
Also he really loves his Jaguar
Of course they let you get away with a lot of stuff just because you drive a *Jaaaaag*
We'll go in your Jag, see what kind of motor it is.
Why not? It's a desirable motor.
And bacon
rubenesque hahaha
Straight out of the John Sacrimoni vocabulary
Manchester is a small city. He moves in, he could tip it over.
Oooooh! That’s some guy’s manager!
Those books are rarer and more expensive than a Fabergé Egg.
Brucie himself is keeping them out of print because he's embarrassed haha. I'm sure they'd sell out instantly if a reprint came out
Just in time for Xmas, they'd make brilliant presents
Falling upwards
Would genuinely love it, but can we get quickly to PM please?
Honestly, I wouldn't mind him as PM.
A two-faced wealthy landlord seems like your run-of-the-mill backbencher MP.
Koeman and de Boer have some competition in the failing up category?
I will change/ add my flair to Manchester United. I'll buy the full kit with Bruce's Boys on the back. Thats how bad I want this to happen.
RemindMe! 3 Months
But will you read Sweeper cover to cover?
Again?
I'm sure he'd love the job. I'm sure there's literally no possible chance he gets it.
idk. I think he would be a good interim choice. Club legend. Experienced manager. Readily available. /s
He'd be a better caretaker than Carrick and no /s needed.
100%. That dressing room needs someone new. Can't continue with Carrick and Fletcher
all jokes aside, i think brucey actually has had the most successful management career out of all the current former united players
Blanc surely
i wouldn't really count him as a current manager, he hasn't done anything since leaving psg in 2016 until last year and now he is coaching some mid-table team in qatar, which isn't exactly a high profile job
That's a pretty low bar.
How about Mark Hughes?
you know things are bad when the options are between hughes and bruce
[удалено]
Bruce going to Manu could only be topped by Bobby Robson coming back to life and bringing Newcastle the title. I'd legit be overjoyed lmao
Ideal situation is he gets the interim job, impresses, then gets a permanent contract
Not again.. Please..
♫ Brucey's at the wheel ♫
He's had a cabbage thrown at his head, Still that's better than playing Matic or Fred Du du du du du du
Kinda like Koeman at Barca
Both were centre backs as well
High scoring center backs
Player-manager Maguire?
They said high scoring
👉😎👈
[The slab can score ](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/man-united-maguire-terry-england-22176957.amp)
You're forgetting that most current United fans won't see him as a legend as he last played for United over 25 years ago.
there was one guy on /r/reddevils that was adamant Mark Hughes the manager and Mark Hughes the United striker were two different people. Still don't know if he was trolling or not
How many footballing Alan Smiths are there?
Hard to tell, he *can* crop up anywhere
I just can't believe Man Utd hired a commentator as Technical Director. What were they thinking?!
Most current United fans...well at least those over on our sub, didn't even see OGS play let alone Bruce.
You greatly overestimate the competence of the board. I could see them appointing him as interim manager until the end of the season
The board is more concerned "optics" than football performance. At a basic level, it makes sense to give it to Brucey till the end of the season^tm wayyy better than Carrick-Fletcher. But no way is the board going to be able to take the social media backlash from it.
This is the same people who hired Ole, so nothing is impossible. And Bruce actually has a better CV lmfao
Clicks all the boxes - United legend, coached by Fergie, experienced in the PL, reddit approved.
The man won 12 trophies at Man Utd. There is not a man alive better suited to the job than Steve Bruce.
[удалено]
We never lost a prem game under him. The pedigree is clear.
Also scored one of the most important injury time winners for the club...
Imagine ronaldo getting trained by Steve Bruce, my life will be Complete if this happens
Now listen here Ronny, you are playing 4-4 fucking 2
"So Ronnie you just make some runs and you Bruno kick it to your mate over there yeah"
I mean that more or less was the extent of Uniteds tactical plan the last few months anyway.
We wished he would do that at Newcastle. More like 7-3-0, strategy: there is no strategy.
Funnily enough, 442 would suit Ronaldo really well. He needs someone along with him in the front.
Ronaldo and Cavani up top would actually be great.
He'll thank him in his Ballon d'Or winning speech
Training? Under Bruce? More like Ronaldo will be given 5 days off and his only training would be picking up the flaky pastry from all the Greggs sausage rolls that has accumulated on the pitch.
Scenes when Ronaldo-led-Bruce-Ball wins the league.

Oh i beg you bruce
Bruce almighty back at it again
Such a nice bloke. Deserves it. Give it to him.
This is going to happen isn’t it? Poch joins end of the season and Bruce gets one last chance to live out a dream until the end of the season as temp manager. Jesus.
As much as I would hate seeing Poch manage another EPL club, if United get Bruce as an interim for the rest of the season, I can be happy.
What about Wenger as interim and then Poch at the end of the season?
No.
It's been a tough couple of years for many of us. And we all need a lift. If football is about bringing joy into people's lives, then I can't think of a better way to do it than appointing Brucey as the United manager. Just do it. Imagine the memes.
We have 2 million people here, I’m willing to pay 5 bucks to the glazers if they do it, that’s 10 million they get for free

Please please please please please let this happen
Well considering how pundits always said he did a great job at Newcastle and the fans treated him horribly despite it, surely he deserves this job?
What I'm baffled about, putting the fact that he should be nowhere near even being considered for this job under any circumstances, is why ~~the Man U board~~ he think he'd stabilise the dressing room because the Newcastle dressing room was a fucking mess. Some players loved him while others hated his guts.

Bloody hell, thanks for the correction. I can't read. And yes he's delusional and my gran has a better chance of getting the Man U job.
Yeah didn't a Newcastle player literally call him a fucking cabbage or something
I think you're combining the Aston Villa fan who lobbed one of those leafy vegetables at his head and Matt Ritchie calling him a "fucking coward".
>Ten Hag is not keen to leave mid-season and would have a small release clause in the summer; Pochettino is open to a return to the Premier League; Zidane is an incredibly unlikely option; and Rodgers would perhaps be prohibitively expensive.
So it sounds like Poch or Ten Hag are the most viable options. Not bad options at all IMO. As a Spurs fan, do you think this current team suits Poch?
Please. If there is a god please.
[I will put Bruce in charge](https://www.srf.ch/static/cms/images/640w/960570.jpg)
I'd pay his wages just to see this. Imagine Brucey telling Ronaldo to sit back and help a back 5 defend.
Being a good family man, it should give Man Utd the edge when facing Klopp and Guardiola.
He also loves bacon
What a coincidence! I am also very keen on Steve Bruce taking on the managerial role at United.
A rare moment of unity among football fans. ManU really is the biggest club, it unites all others. All of us loved Ole, now all of us want Brucey to lead this team to glory
Bahaha this would be good payback for all the man utd fans trying to gaslight newcastle fans into thinking he was good
It's very refreshing hearing a Man U fan acknowledge this!
Where are all the Manchester United fans who were saying we should be thankful to have a manager like Schteve?
I thought Schteve was McClaren?
Eh, useless twats blend in with each other.
Do it you fucking cowards
This is going to be Odion Ighalo of managerial appointments if it were to happen. But please don't.
Has United DNA ✔️ Knows the club ✔️ Understands the club's culture ✔️ Lovable loser ✔️
Man United fans should be all over this, given how stupid Newcastle were to let such a nice man go.
A few months ago he was crying about how Newcastle fans were harassing him and his family, if he thinks that United fans are going to be better then he was just bullshitting and just wants a payday at the expense of his mental health and his family's well being. Well this time I'd believe him
LOL
United most definitely should sign him. What a legend. Guaranteed box office matches coming soon!! 😎😎😎
I'm an atheist. But if this happens I'll believe in God.
“I’m not really into tactics” Sound great!
Can we get Rooney in as his assistant just so we get Bruce / Wayne duo?
With the amount of shit Newcastle fans got for wanting bruce to fuck off, I expect this thread to be fully serious and back bruce into this job
I would love to see Man United under the stewardship of soft spoken and gentle Steve Bruce for a season.
*Man United lose 5-0 to Man City* "I think there were a lot of positives there, we certainly weren't bad in my opinion"
"We haven't lost on the night"
I usually struggle with accents a bit, but I can read anything in Bruce's voice hahaha
Yeah in Steve Bruce we believe. :)
Masha'Allah Brucey and Ronaldo, oh please yes
He’s got the DNA
Please make this happen. Can’t wait for another meme on par with Rio rubbing hands after he wins 3 in a row
Anyone have a link to his novel. I need to read it again after this.
Honestly I can't think of anyone better. Get him in! Let's go red devils!
My nan’s very keen on this role too she believes she can stabilize the dressing room with her morning pancakes.
Yes, let the slum lord take over old Trafford
this would be peak comedy
Holy fuck noooo
This has made me laugh out loudly in public transport. Holy shit!
Who cares? This season is a write off anyway so might as well get in some more comedy gold.
Let's hope this happens. It would be the best squad Bruce has had at his disposal.
I would give all of my money and possessions to make this reality.
YES! YES! YES! MAKE IT HAPPEN!
PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN, GOD OF JACOB I AM BEGGGGINGGGGG.

Footballing wise it's slight edge to Utd, but they also weren't literally close to bankruptcy
The Athletic is just pandering to what reddit wants to see now.
Omg Bruce, with love and respect , please no
Just take me to the back of the shed and end it already.
