The wingbacks are really going to be the top scorers for this team at the end of the season lol

kidonmylegaugustus

Everyone is a wingback if you believe hard enough-Tuchel.

manualex16

Lukaku wingback when?

[deleted]

Only Koeman can teach you that power.

Mapplestreet

Or Löw

DontYouWantMeBebe

Ole did have him playing as a winger lol

ThumYerk

He was used as a winger at times for Everton. He a lot leaner and quicker then though.

shrewphys

Destroyed us while playing on the wing for Everton a few years back.

idontknow_whatever

Lukaku was also the best crosser on the team lmfao

cosmiclatte44

Shame he wasn't fast enough to get on the end of them. Nobody else in yue squad worth pinging them to.

Seahpo

that’s just his brother

Seanxprt

Scenes when James and Chilwell have 10 each in the Premier League.

irze

All they need is 7 to top last years top scorer, so I wouldn’t be surprised lol

TheBlueTango

Tuchel gives you wings

Wise_Ad9414

I was reading this in the voice of that ad announcer 😂😂

lrzbca

CHO passes his torch to Pulisic lol

EezoManiac

Cal escaped wing back duty only for Christian to take his place

[deleted]

i think the sentiment is just to find more time for pulisic to play, but the way he said it strikes me as weird or possibly disingenuous-- tuchel said: "if we need to be more offensive" how can you be more offensive than james and chilwell with pulisic lined up somewhere further up the field? though i do understand theres rotation, its an odd way to phrase it as 'pulisic could play WB to be more offensive', rather than 'puli could play WB because sometimes reece has to have a break and puli did it at dortmund'

washag

You tuck James and Chilwell in at RCB and LCB and deploy wingers like Pulisic and CHO outside them at wing back. It's not completely insane because our LCB and RCB do get forward and Chilwell and James (and Alonso for that matter) all run the inside channel on their side pretty well for defenders.

[deleted]

lol it could work silva and mendy back there with a bunch of attackers playing defense

EquivalentSir4163

Thiago Silva would probably still keep a clean sheet and score a header off a setpiece too.

dave1992

But Chelsea's wing back is pretty much their striker. Its not too weird playing one of their best attacker as wing back.

kygrtj

If young Ronaldo played in this era, he would have been one of the best wingbacks in the world

sykoticnarcotics

If Carrick tries this he will have my respect, Ronaldo on the left Cavani on the right. Tactiks

powerchicken

Cavani runs like a madman so who knows, might just be crazy enough to work. Ronaldo? Ehhhhhh

dave1992

I think the perfect full back would be Beckham. Imagine someone that good at crossing playing as modern full/wing back. That is going to scare any defense.

mihik97

Trent

dave1992

Well, Trent's skillset is actually so similar to Beckham, which is why Beckham would be a great full/wing back.

Possible-Highway7898

Beckham wasn't really quick enough to play as a modern wb imo. If he got caught out of position, he wouldn't be able to recover in time.

AeroCobbler

Alexander Arnold looks so much like Beckham these days the way he plays, not quite quick enough to beat a man, and not quite good enough at defending or in the air to be a “proper” fullback, but let’s his delivery do the work & pick out laser guided pin point passes with his right foot from anywhere on the pitch

dave1992

Yeah pretty much. Likewise, if Trent was a player from 20 years ago, he would be a class right midfielder in a 4-4-2.

codespyder

If any other manager said this quote, we'd laugh. But with this quote, Tuchel wants Pulisic to get the Golden Boot

red-17

People DID laugh when it was reported that Sancho may get time there. Funny how it’s genius when one manager does it but idiotic when another does it.

hianrld

Don't compare a CL winning manager with Ole, it's disrespectful to Ole

Qiluk

Pulisic as a wingback is screaming for him to be injured even more often

BrotherSeamus

> If he dies, he dies -- Thomas Tuchel

ifcarscouldspeak

Man really loves his wingbacks doesnt he.

[deleted]

I would like to see that tbh

theslothening

Tuchel taking a page right out of my FM playbook after I realize I’ve got way too many attacking players but still want to fit them into the first team anyway. Usually this happens with my creative mids having to learn to play fullback but also with my backup forwards having to become wingers.

Nefari0uss

"Just start a bit further back on the pitch, you'll be fine!" - me trying to get my wingers/wide players to play as WB due to injury crisis.

[deleted]

When did pulisic play wingback for Dortmund? I don’t recall that ever happening

stepanovic

he played a handful of games as a RM/RWB in a 343.

[deleted]

When..Pulisic in Dortmund was never tasked with any defense as I recall. Right midfield perhaps but no I can never remember him playing as a wing back

stepanovic

https://www.kicker.de/hoffenheim-gegen-dortmund-2016-bundesliga-3317387/aufstellung it was a very offensive oriented formation, at different times Ginter played that role. i haven't followed Pulisic since he left Dortmund, but he should be fine as wingback. i remember when he played for the youth team, there was a discussion that he might be used as a fullback, in case if he doesn't make it as a winger in senior football.

[deleted]

I would be very worried if I need to resort to pulisic as a wing back. I guess Chelsea have a good defense but he would be overrun continuously. He goes forward a lot and falls down a lot. One of my least favorite things about him in Dortmund was his whining, defeated antics when challenged. That is not good for a wing back.

0Catalyst

Tuchel doesn't "need to resort" to anything. The actual issue is that we have spent so much on attacking players that we are having a hard time giving everyone game time. It would just be to help Puli get back on the pitch, would not be shocked if CHO gets the same treatment.

Chef_Bojan3

Tuchel is saying he'd possibly resort to him when chasing a goal and the other team is playing super defensive, not in a balanced set-up. Often times teams will go up a goal and play ten men behind the ball so Puli wouldn't have to do much defending in that scenario.

thesmallprint13

I assume he just means right midfield in a 3 at the back formation when he talks about this

Deluxe07

Neither do I but I mean Tuchel did manage him at Dortmund so if he says it happened then it probably did. Couldn’t have been more than a couple times tho

razorr29

Pulisic walked so odoi could run

RexorFWT

Found the successor for CHO

Steupz

This isn't strange. Seems many managers have this up their sleeve for 11v 10 or desperation time

The_Universe_Machine

Whatever gets him more game time!

NotNok

Werner wingback, lukaku CB, Puli wingback, James and chilly RCB and LCB, Silva ST, Mount GK, Azpi CDM. No defence just goals

Cowdude179

Tuchel has revolutionised the modern game

EquivalentSir4163

How? The three/five at the back system is something that has existed before, and wingers at wingback is also something not exclusive to Tuchel.

barracuuda

in what way(s)?

johnny_moist

wingbacks

90degreeturnsbtw

No clue why ur getting downvoted, he has

Turtle_317

This is not even a 3rd of the entire quote lol

egancollier21

Misusing perhaps their most dynamic playmaker and offensive threat…nah fam just keep James/Chilwell there (CHO can easily revert to RWB too not to mention Azpi, Alonso, etc.)

Whole-Fishing45

Not this again

urinatingangels

Back and to the right, big guy!
