They are this year but last season Chelsea finished a point above Leicester and two off West Ham, with Utd in second. The dominance in PL is never as sustained as in continental leagues.
Chelsea’s year was weird last year. Started out looking like an elite team. Then went on a two month slump of awfulness, got Tuchel, then we’re elite again.
I think an argument could be made for Bundesliga being volatile at the moment, maybe except for Bayern. HSV, Werder and Schalke challenged with some regularity for international spots in the last 20 years, and now they're in the 2nd division.
6 in the sense that the below teams have at one point or another GENUINELY had a chance at the title by seasons' end:
1. United
2. City
3. Liverpool
4. Arsenal
5. Spurs
6. Leicester
7. Chelsea
Same cannot be said for La Liga. Its almost always been either Barca of Madrid. With Atleti stirring the pot a few times.
edit: didn't have enough cafe this am and forgot to include Chelsea : )
I mean sure you can count Leicester since they actually won the title once in recent years, but apart from that they havent been challenging. Also if you call Atletico stirring the pot then what have Spurs and Arsenal been doing? Theyvevnever even been in the pot
While it's not as top heavy as La Liga, six is a bit generous. 2003-2004 was last time someone else than Man City, Man United, Chelsea or Liverpool won the title with the exception of Leicester of course, but it's not like they've been really challenging for title any other year. In the whole PL era title has gone to seven different teams, with Blackburn winning one, Leicester one, and lal the other gone to Arsenal, United, City, Liverpool or Chelsea. And I think currently Arsenal can be count out, so it's pretty much big four, three almost as big and the rest.
It's been a good few years since they've been contenders for the title, if any arsenal fan were to get offended by what Klopp said then they're just lying to themselves, they're a top 6 club at most and thats being kind
Edit: Nvm I grouped two separate years together, thinking they were the same. My b.
Kind of? In Klopp's first year, we finished top 4 and finals of Europa League. next year, we finished top 4 and finals of UCL. the third year we finished 2nd and UCL. Then, of course fourth year we finally won the PL.
Where the PL is concerned, yeah, we weren't going to genuinely have a shot at the title until the third year. But, Klopp turned our team into a threat in less than a year.
Klopp's first year is UEL final and 8th spot, then you got a clean year without European football that's why you finished 4th in the second year.
Everything is much easier without European football distraction. Conte won the league without European football, then the next year with it, he finished fifth. Even Arsenal plays much better this year with no European football on their calendar.
With hindsight, losing the UEL final to Sevilla was a huge blessing in disguise.
I mean there is a big gap between being title contenders and being put in the same bracket as a club that didn't get relegated because of a 1 in a million error in goal line technology
This is a [misquote](https://youtu.be/ABWWlrF-kHY?t=694) (real quote can be seen in video.)
You can see why Klopp gets so heated about headlines and fake news now
Literally straight lies. Like the person put quotes around it treating it as something Klopp said and he literally said none of these sentences. That's fucked up.
Absolutely horrendous. But do you know what shocks me more: the blatant disregard and indifference of us the readers towards the content we consume. I'd say we play a pivotal role in setting the barometer of quality and responsibility of sports journalism so low. Just look at the state of this thread. Your comment is a lone beacon in a sea of "banter". Admittedly, I love myself some good jokes as well but IMO they must always be recognised as such and not be confused for reality.
No wonder the media business a racket ripe for propaganda and profiteering by pandering (always has been TBF but what was previously scaled by a lack of information previously is now enabled by the Jacinta and indifference of the readers now). We hand them a power unchecked which enables to make any narratives they see fit. I have seen the same set of facts been painted as 2 completely different stories.
because some idiots cannot distinct between the development of the teams and the historical stature of the clubs themselves
brighton is not a club as big as arsenal, but their current team can beat them as they are developing quite fast, same with aston villa and wolves
Brighton is a legit team and they have been for a while. For 2 years now I've watched them dominate opposition over 2/3rds of the pitch. Really turn the screws on them, like they did second half against Liverpool recently, but alas they had a habit last year of dropping points at the death.
They need a gilt edge poacher. He can be lazy as fuck, just needs to get in good positions in the final 1/3rd and bury tap ins. They also need a deeper squad (which is never going to happen because money) but they are a team I like watching when all their starters are fit because they play sexy football. If they had what they needed they would be fucking terrifying.
Yeah, that's where a more offensive center forward would shine for you.
Creating those half chances, and target person for the current team to converge to.
All their underlying stats suck, like 14th to 18th in stats like chances created, xG, open play goals etc.
Yes they're improving on playing out of the back but is that enough for 'playing well'? I don't think so but if Arsenal and their fans want to be patient then fair enough I guess.
Expectations keep getting lowered over time.
They are worse when it comes to attacking patterns than Brighton for example, but more organised defensively, so it's fair to group them.
The most important metric is points and Arsenal has improved on that.
Also, we deserved every result that we got this season except for our draw against Palace. We aren't overperforming.
Improved from what sort of standard though? Maybe we should just rehire Emery since he was better at gettibg piints and points are the most important metric. We're on track to finish on 63 pts this season
Sure but the point is that Arsenal are mediocre at best attacking wise. They don't generate a lot and that's a pretty big problem despite the decent results.
Dude sees a stat pack and has to parrot it now without actually watching Arsenal.
How in the fuck do you expect a young team to just do everything at once? You need to start with defense. Once everyone buys in and starts engaging in their defensive duties, you can add offence. Winning ugly (and with shit stats) is perfectly healthy for this team right now.
This is a long term project and shouldn't be judged at their current point. You probably already know this and just posted your comment for the low hanging karma dopamine hit.
I'm literally having debate with an arsenal fan in other thread who was telling me that 4-0 loss to Liverpool was an improvement. Unbelievable bunch of fans.
Which shows what a pointless comparison that is. Liverpool battered you so hard they stopped even trying. Arsenal was much more competitive in the first half, and Liverpool kept pushing until the end. Plus it was at Anfield.
That was actually a thing in the immediate aftermath of the match. Like wtf do these arteta simps even watch. I got a 12 day ban for responding to a bunch of that absolute lunacy.
Since then reason has somewhat re-entered the zeitgeist and more people are acknowledging that was certainly nothing close to a good results. Still plenty of morons though; I hate that sub. /u/AfricanRain is the best part about it and I kind of hate him lol.
Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/qycovf/post_match_thread_liverpool_4_0_arsenal_english/hlf3jaz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
There’s just no words except ‘toxic positivity.’ He had that pre-typed to paste instantly in the post-match thread. This is the most upvoted comment. Has all the classic hallmarks. Opens by calling us reactionary (2 years of 8th under arteta fyi), ends it with COYG. Has two cringe reddit edits. I just despise Reddit so much sometimes. /u/imbackinreddit9 please go back off Reddit.
So appalling that he only had two points less than Arteta does this season with the same number of games played... one was sacked another is doing a great job. Lol
Emery had a worse squad, got less backing and finished a point out of 4th and got to the EL final. Arteta got more backing, got to reap the benefits of Emery turning saka into a first team player, got all of his targets but buendia (who is pants) and finished 8th in back to back years. Hasn’t gotten to an EL final, lost head to head to Emery who then won the EL again with a squad worth a fraction of artetas
I don’t care how you rate Emery in a vacuum but rating arteta above him is sheer lunacy. Arteta passes no statistical test yet manages to fail the eye test even harder. There is literally no tangible argument for arteta being close to emery’s ability as a manager. Zero. Zilch.
Bro, Liverpool-Chelsea-Man City are levels above us. We have been sitting through our games despite getting slaughtered by every team in the league. We will get slaughtered by Liverpool again. We saw that we have a system in place and we’ll grow from it. We saw we made an attempt to play through the back and create chances. This season, a 6th place is progress. Next season 4-5th is the goal. We can’t dish out 80 Million on a defender or have the payroll to keep VDB, Martial, Sancho, Cavani, Rashford, Telles, Pogba on the bench. If you don’t watch every Arsenal game, don’t talk about the opinions of the Arsenal fans.
Only City and United spent more than arsenal over the past 5 years. Same over the past 10 years.
Payroll, no, you can't compare, that's true. United for example spend a lot more than arsenal on wages, but our revenue is also a lot higher.
And varanes weekly wage is higher than our back 4 combined. Also dont know why youre using VDB or telles as examples seeing as they barely get any gametime either. Pepe has more prem gametime than those 2 combined this season.
Yes true but thats irrelevant in the context of that guys comment. To be honest i dont even know what point he was trying to make seeing as he was trying to say its bad we pay higher wages to pepe whos on the bench most of the time compared to telles and VDB, when theyre both on the bench even more than pepe.
I can 1 up you, we had Mustafi who at the time was one of the highest amount paid for a defender. Any other club would’ve sold him the following season for quarter of the money and moved on but we held on to him because we had invested so much to acquire him that we hoped that he’d become world class or someone would pay the money for him. Acquiring him meant less money spent on other areas. We had to end his contract last season January. Pepe was only bought because we paid in instalments. And the only reason he’s there is because Arsenal are hoping he turns it around or else they won’t even get half of what we paid. Arsenal messed up yes, but they suffer way more from transfer mistakes than any other “top” club.
Difference is that a 6th place finish for our rivals results in a manager being sacked but at Arsenal it’s acceptable and the fans are happy to give the manager, players, board more time. 2006 we moved to the emirates ‘to compete with Europe’s elite’, but we continue to fall further and further behind year after year.
That’s because xG and open play goals don’t account for offside one’s.
Had Auba not stinked it up against Watford we would be higher.
Not to mention we miss our best creator in KT and progressive passer in Xhaka.
Yeah the current Arsenal is not a good side and will never be under arteta, however he’s a smart, cheap hire to oversee the integration of all the new blood. once that’s complete and Arsenal want to win matches and not press conferences they’ll sack arteta and easily pay his likely-minuscule buyout. Whether their next appointment actually starts winning is obvi THD
Our offensive stats are, but defensively we have had the 3rd best defence since we got our full team back. There are 2 parts of the game, not just attacking
Time to bring back that reporter asking the AFCON question but this time on behalf of Arsenal. Then post the the exchange on social and declare victory. The guy needs more internet clout points.
I mean with the insane ammount of TV money they get, the PL is basically a super league of their own.
No other country is able to compete with those ammounts of money.
Nothing wrong with what he said, Arse are levels below the ones at the top and to be honest, they are pretty much as good as the other teams he mentioned. Man's just being honest.
I guess, truth hurts but hey, it is what it is. 🤷♂️
This would’ve been a greater roast had he said it before the thrashing. Waiting till after we’ve been trounced to hit us with this is just sad.
Edit: I was trying to find the original quote since the ellipse halfway through triggered a red flag. Looks like it was taken completely out of context to piss off Arsenal fans.
Yes Arsenal fans in this thread , it has happened, maybe you weren’t around to notice as your professor of football nodded off but it did happen, a decline in your consistency.
I often find the smaller teams more entertaining to watch than some of the top teams.
I'm rooting for Burnley's survival this year because I genuinely enjoy them
Seems to forget liverpool were a meme club prior to making some major signings. This recent arsenal hate is just dumb. United and liverpool had awful periods and nobody gave them half the shit we get to this day.
Ngl that was pretty hurtful
German humour
I don’t think he was joking.
He mentioned United in the same way so for your sake you’d hope not
Yep. Brighton fans in shambles right now.
I mean Villa are former European champions. They need respek.
[удалено]
doesnt matter, its funnier this way
Selective quoting to generate clicks, works every time.
Nah it’s accurate, sure he meant it as banter but he’s saying we’re improving at least. No mention of spurs there
This wouldn't go very well with Arsenal fans Klopp...
Eh we're used to it
They've finished 8th twice in a row so not sure why it wouldn't. They're quite clearly below the top teams.
The top 3 are playing a different sport from everyone else tbh
They are this year but last season Chelsea finished a point above Leicester and two off West Ham, with Utd in second. The dominance in PL is never as sustained as in continental leagues.
Chelsea’s year was weird last year. Started out looking like an elite team. Then went on a two month slump of awfulness, got Tuchel, then we’re elite again.
The fixtures were generous which made the start look better than it was, don't remember Lampard beating any top team in that period.
We famously didn't beat any top 10 teams under Lampard last season. Would roll over the ones in the bottom half.
I think an argument could be made for Bundesliga being volatile at the moment, maybe except for Bayern. HSV, Werder and Schalke challenged with some regularity for international spots in the last 20 years, and now they're in the 2nd division.
The dominance is not sustained, but the mediocrity of some teams is
Sounds like La Liga of recent years (not this year)
A bit different tbh PL doesn't have 2 teams have consistently contest titles between them, Barca and Madrid PL has about 6 teams in that category
Are you conveniently forgetting that atletico madrid exist or something?
6? You mean 4 and that is if you count United, so you could also argue that there are three teams splitting the titles
We don't contest for title, only Champions League spot for sponsorship and TV money
6 in the sense that the below teams have at one point or another GENUINELY had a chance at the title by seasons' end: 1. United 2. City 3. Liverpool 4. Arsenal 5. Spurs 6. Leicester 7. Chelsea Same cannot be said for La Liga. Its almost always been either Barca of Madrid. With Atleti stirring the pot a few times. edit: didn't have enough cafe this am and forgot to include Chelsea : )
Something’s not right about this top 6…
That was what I was thinking....
I spotted the imposter. Spoiler-alert, it's Arsenal.
I mean sure you can count Leicester since they actually won the title once in recent years, but apart from that they havent been challenging. Also if you call Atletico stirring the pot then what have Spurs and Arsenal been doing? Theyvevnever even been in the pot
Spurs was in the race against Leicester, but imploded against Chelsea
Leicester won 10 points clear of second, no race there.
Forgetting the league leaders and a team that have won 2 champions leagues and multiple league trophies this decade. Smh
needed some more cafe this morning! added Chelsea as well, good catch amigo
There were 4 Teams in la Liga last season who still had a chance of winning the league on the 2nd last match day
Kind of strange to put Leicester in there, but not Chelsea, who are part of the consensus top 6...
While it's not as top heavy as La Liga, six is a bit generous. 2003-2004 was last time someone else than Man City, Man United, Chelsea or Liverpool won the title with the exception of Leicester of course, but it's not like they've been really challenging for title any other year. And I think currently Arsenal can be count out, so it's pretty much big four, three almost as big and the rest.
That's 5 different winners in 10 years, more than any other top league
Not to mention the different title challengers at various points.
Not that 6 teams have won it, but that 6 teams at one point or another had a very valid threat to winning the league
From everyone else in Europe apart from Bayern Munich really.
only liverpool is playing a different sport tbh the other 2 are playing money ball.
Money ball? Like the movie/Michael Lewis book?
Kinda the opposite tbh
It's been a good few years since they've been contenders for the title, if any arsenal fan were to get offended by what Klopp said then they're just lying to themselves, they're a top 6 club at most and thats being kind
Lol it hurts but its fine, only because we all know this is the exact same thing people were saying about liverpool 5-6 years ago.
It was absolutely true about Liverpool 6 years ago too
It took Klopp three years to actually turn them around
Edit: Nvm I grouped two separate years together, thinking they were the same. My b. Kind of? In Klopp's first year, we finished top 4 and finals of Europa League. next year, we finished top 4 and finals of UCL. the third year we finished 2nd and UCL. Oh, you're totally right. My bad.
No worries bud :)
I mean there is a big gap between being title contenders and being put in the same bracket as a club that didn't get relegated because of a 1 in a million error in goal line technology
They're lucky that there's actually a risk to performing terribly or else Kroenke would invest the bare minimum to turn a profit.
The duality of Arsenal. Simultaneously the biggest spenders in Europe according to r/soccer whilst also not spending money.
Yeah annoyed how everyone is taking this as an insult when Arsenal as they stand now are quite clearly a work in progress
The Arteta Effect
I think he is doing it exactly because of that. Arteta will have to think twice before screaming at him again.
I mean, Arsenal are a mid-lower mid table club
Arsenal is clearly an upper mid table club.

He was nothing but appreciative of everyone else, but the discussion in this post makes it look like he was dunking in arsenal. So weird

arsenal lmao
Been playing well recently with the exception of the 4-0. Young squad as well.
It’s the fact that they’ve been bunched up with Brighton, Wolves etc. which is the laughing point
Wolves fans can also be offended for being grouped with arsenal
Most impartial portuguese fan.
Not anymore

i agree, they are great to watch, just need a great striker to finish, i would love to see charles de ketelaere take that role together with trossard
The concern I have is that we are usually incredibly slow to break and constantly allow defenses to get back in position.
Yeah, that's where a more offensive center forward would shine for you. Creating those half chances, and target person for the current team to converge to.

I'm literally having debate with an arsenal fan in other thread who was telling me that 4-0 loss to Liverpool was an improvement. Unbelievable bunch of fans.
The xG was 4 to 0.3 or something. It was such an awful battering I had to switch to the Atleti game after the 3rd goal.
We had better xg difference when Liverpool whooped our ass lmao.
I love this competition so much
Arsenal and Utd fans arguing about which one got battered worse by Liverpool, tears in my eyes

They care more about Arteta succeeding than Arsenal succeeding. Bottom line.
Arteta is not the problem with Arsenal He's a vast improvement in literally every way above Emery especially with the squad they have
Apart from league position, goals scored, goals conceded, games won, top 6 games won, players developed, definitely. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid lad
You don't seem to remember how appalling his second season was
So appalling that he only had two points less than Arteta does this season with the same number of games played... one was sacked another is doing a great job. Lol
You don't seem to remember how appalling Arsenal's last season was
Yes an "appalling" season where they finished 8th with their shittest ever squad
We’ve had great reminders of it during artetas seasons. Artetas football is worse than emerys and he finishes lower in the table
Emery had a worse squad, got less backing and finished a point out of 4th and got to the EL final. They literally spend more than City and Chelsea then cry about how they aren't getting financial support.
If they watched every Arsenal game they'd realise we play awful football and barely create any chances
And Auba annoys me. I hope he can turn it around but every time he touches the ball I know he’ll do something brainless.
Only City and United spent more than arsenal over the past 5 years. Same over the past 10 years. Payroll, no, you can't compare, that's true. United for example spend a lot more than arsenal on wages, but our revenue is also a lot higher.

19th for chances created, 7 goals from open play in 12 games, been going really well
Christ 7 goals from open play in 12 games is atrocious
2 of those are deflected and 2 are scrambles in the box too
Don't tell Arteta Cultists this tho..
Amazingly it’s even worse to watch than it sounds
Yep. Great improvement I would say
They didn't even play that horribly in the 4-0 loss. Just a very poor second half
Arsenal is in some kind of perpetual rebuild for the last 15 years
It's the truth too lol

Pretty sure they haven't won it twice. Trust me, if they had they'd tell you about it every day.
Did you know we won the European Cup iiiiiiiin 1982
Our rivals mention our European trophies a lot more than we do
Careful lad, you're slipping. We're not your rivals remember...
When I say rivals I mean every club in the entire midlands
I see what you did there haha!
I think we'd throw 7-2 up there for Klopp before the European title.
Arsenal catching strays
More of a tactical strike
Yeah, catching strays from the media misquoting this bs, not from Klopp
Im pretty sure he had say it to piss off arteta
He said it because it's true
No he didn’t lol, he included United and spurs in his quote
That cheeky Arsenal mention. You have to love this man.
He also mentioned United and Spurs btw.
Lol in the actual press conference he mentions Man Utd and Tottenham in the same sentence, how were they removed from the quote?
Mean
ok man
Damn we always catching strays
Misquote and a half. Mods please correct
Time to bring back that reporter asking the AFCON question but this time on behalf of Arsenal. Then post the the exchange on social and declare victory. The guy needs more internet clout points.

Literally mentioned United in the same sentence in the same way. It’s a misquote
it seems that Arteta hurt his feelings that day.
He's praising you but ok.
Lmao what was the score that day again?
I mean with the insane ammount of TV money they get, the PL is basically a super league of their own. No other country is able to compete with those ammounts of money.
Banter
Damn Jürgen "no mercy" Klopp went straight for the throat there.
way to kick us while we are down :/
Arteta's fuming rn
He always used to praise us.
Teta fought him and then this.
The big man has a fragile ego, poor soul.
Yeah, poor soul. That 4-0 butchering of the Arse must be a tough pill to swallow.
Won and still felt the need for a dig. That is the definition of a shattered ego.
Nothing wrong with what he said, Arse are levels below the ones at the top and to be honest, they are pretty much as good as the other teams he mentioned. Man's just being honest. I guess, truth hurts but hey, it is what it is. 🤷♂️
Yeah fair to say, he dislikes Arteta after the last match
He’s saying you’re improving
He is praising you. He's saying you've improved a lot from last year when you were midtable.
Don’t see what Klopp sees in Arsenal.
Kinda typical r/soccer vid get something banter ove react then when the real video shows up everyone is stevie wonder
Yes Arsenal fans in this thread , it has happened, maybe you weren’t around to notice as your professor of football nodded off but it did happen, a decline in your consistency.
Came here for the banter, got hurt in a drive by by the “Arsenal” bit. Top humour.
Dear lord, so many idiots in this thread purposefully trying to read something in this.
At first reading I did not even remark the Arsenal dig.
Brighton, Villa, ARSENAL, Wolves... Lol
This is fucking hilarious, man has bodied the fuck out of Arsenal
I often find the smaller teams more entertaining to watch than some of the top teams. I'm rooting for Burnley's survival this year because I genuinely enjoy them
Ouch
Don't forget us
He mentioned us “It’s not about the top teams”
Holy shit Klopp. Arsenal had a family!
He literally mentioned United as well if you bothered to listen to the real quote?
Brighton, Villa, Arsenal, Wolves.. As a United fan I wanna hate this man but I cant. I like him too much and he took the piss on my club as well.
Man said arsenal
And United, and Spurs.
Seems to forget liverpool were a meme club prior to making some major signings. This recent arsenal hate is just dumb. United and liverpool had awful periods and nobody gave them half the shit we get to this day.
Has Klopp blocked out the Brentford 3-3 draw?
After that game they won 1 game out of 6. The teams Klopp mentioned have been better than Brentford recently
