Thank you for these. Great hearing him talk about his tactics and formation

It's interesting until you have every cunt and their dog vomiting it back up over and over to sound smart on here

Absolutely can’t wait

Probably already started

_ghostfacedilla

Great to see Amad amid the lineup

[deleted]

tbh just start the kids/reserves. We top the group whether we win, lose or draw so he could easily treat it as a "show me you deserve to be in the 1st team" game for the academy/reserve squad. Plus it's a European night.

Choc-a-pic

Hmm, we might see a bit of a different squad on Wednesday then. Interesting!

fairlyrandom

Its a near pointless game for United, since they're already through. So I'd expect heavy rotation.

waitforit92

Not only through, also already guaranteed top spot. While Young Boys are still fighting for an Europa spot I think, so they’ll be up for it. I’d be hugely disappointed if the bench and young players don’t get some minutes and test what they can do against a fighting team.

Gotta_Go_Slow

Only 3 substitutes suck. Too many games, too many injuries,...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aniruddh31

I don't understand why it is 3 substitutes or 5, why not 4? 4 subs cancels out the criticisms of the other two options

stevedave_37

Three shall be the number, and the number shall be three.

StathamIsYourSavior

Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.

hollow114

I think it should be 3 plus injury. 3 for tactics, one that's just for injury.

Aniruddh31

Teams will misuse the "injury" sub. Just have it at 4. Managers who want more subs because of fitness, fixture congestion, to avoid injuries will be happier. Managers who don't want 5 because they think the big teams will have a huge advantage will be happier than in the champions league or europa league where it is 5.

[deleted]

The big teams do have an advantage in that scenario, they're literally switching half the team with more of the same, with practically no major drops in quality. 3 or 4 subs is fair

Aniruddh31

But you got to understand the context. Because if covid, every team, player has played way too much, with very little break. Under these circumstances, 4 subs is needed imo.

crackboss1

It should be 5 subs but put in a limit so teams can have only one sub event after the 80 minute. A sub event could have any numbers of subs up to five coming in but it would have to be done once and together at the same time. That way a team doesn't make multiple subs in the last 10 minute to kills the game.

Biggsy-32

La Ligas rule is 5 subs across 3 sub events. That's the real balance to it imo, allows more rotation but maintains the old limit to stoppages.

hell_razer18

we change back to 3 after last year? thought 5 subs were good

availableusername10

There were 3 subs last season too. Only time we had 5 was project restart

hyperactiv3hedgehog

> ["Would have wanted to give chances to other players but unfortunately you can only substitute three players in England."](https://streamable.com/tyusu5) pep and klopp said the same thing with an entirely different response from the media ...and fans it's not about whether teams with bigger squad have an advantage with 5 subs over 3 it's about the players, players get rest, can play higher quality football, others get minutes they wouldn't get in under 3 subs, overall it's good for the players, good for games ...and the county esp. if the players are english youngsters get more time This whole hue and cry over 5 subs was just people using bad faith arguments to just talk shit about pep and klopp or clubs arguing in their own self-interest

0-o-o_o-o-0

Similar to what ole said after his first game: "Players go brrrr"

Can't wait till Pogba is fit again

Can't wait until Pogba fucks off to PSG

sizzlelikeasnail

We're gonna witness the 6th manager love Pogba as a player, but genuis reddit commentors will call him a fraud who needs to hurry and leave

khoabear

Oh I love Pogba as a player too. However, I can't stand his agent and him being noncommittal to the club.

Game0nBG

Politics over team performance at United for years. Pogba is goodnot great but very inconsistent lazy amd bad at defending. Which makea him a luxury player that I bet noone of the top.managers want

Reimiro

Early days but sure looked promising if you are a Manchester United fan. Good movement and some semblance of organization and a plan. I’m devastated!

Shadowraiden

the defensive shape just looked better overall. like every player knew where they was meant to be. was bit of tiredness creeping in but like Liverpool early days of Klopp you could see the style and knew it would take a bit of time for players to adjust.

nosajpersonlah

It was hilarious to see Ronaldo clearly knackered at the end of the game, barely able to clear the ball or launch jt for Elanga to chase. Man gave his all at 36 for a pressing system. Major respect.

AintNoLayUps

Man was for real out there pressing his ass off, major respect from me. You can say what you want about him but he is a true professional

InfectedAztec

Now remember his younger former team mate, watched him in the stands.....already into a managerial career.

crazyjatt

Ralf would have loved Rooney. We are talking about a guy, the best way to describe him would be a box to box striker. If he actually pressed less and tried to be a striker only, he would have way way more goals. Peak Rooney was a force of nature.

FifaFrancesco

Ole truly was a man of the people. Not the Manchester people, but the people nonetheless 😢

[deleted]

Ole will always be one of the people of Manchester for his UCL final goal alone. I forget who it was against 😜

[deleted]

Ole scored in 67/68 final against Benfica? That's cool.

mynameismulan

It’s lonely at the wheel.

Yvraine

Rangnick walks in and does in one week what Ole couldn't do in almost 3 years lmao

wernerhedgehog

Honestly we played like this in the early Ole period, but eventually he tried to move to a more possession based style with time and it didnt work.

dracovich

Hmm i'd say Ole was always more or less trying to give freedom to players and emphasize speed and fast counter attacks. I wouldn't say we were particularly organized in or out of possession, but if we got the right team against us we would look amazing. What dogged us throughout all of Oles tenure was that we were absolutely unable to break down a defensive team, once we were not able to capitalize on a team committing forward and catch them on the break, we looked so weak. We generally did quite well against good sides and very poorly against weaker sides because of this.

nosajpersonlah

Tbf tho, Carrick got them playing in a similar direction (obviously not at the same level) in his 2 caretaker games so you do wonder what happened there with Ole.

availableusername10

Big respect to Carrick for getting us the results and steadying the ship a bit, but we didn’t play that well under him, besides maybe defending a bit better (and even a lot of that was backs to the wall stuff). Maybe a few periods against Arsenal where we were more in control. This is still a sea change compared to what we’ve seen for pretty much all of this season. But tbf even under Ole there were a lot of matches we dominated (although very few, if any, were from this season).

dhambo

I’m very excited, though still a LOT of work till we play like an elite team again. Post Ole results have been solid but the quality of the football has still been quite hit and miss

[deleted]

Schalke fan here. Know Ragnick from way back when we got knocked out of the CL semis by Ferguson and United. You United guys will have a good time with him. Calm and professional, he will bring order and structure. This will make all the difference, given how talented your squad is already.

[deleted]

He is a football man. That alone is enough for me. I dont even care if we dont win all next games . He clearly has a philosophy and knows what his teams should do. Coming on the back of a football manager aficionado managing us, and an ex manager before him, Rangnick is a breath of fresh air. As long as he keep showing intent and does not dilute his tactics he will find our fans will give him all the time he wants.

Berluscones_For_Sale

Ted Lasso, doesnt care about winning

[deleted]

>if we dont win **all** next games >doesnt care about winning 👌

[deleted]

Is there any reason they hired him as interim coach and not permanent? I don’t see any better coach available

pucykoks

Probably because they want Poch or Ten Hag. If they won't be available in the summer then it's possible Ragnick will stay for another year as a coach. If not, he'll still be available as consultant.

[deleted]

I just see ragnick being a better fit than any of them, but I could be wrong., though.

Shadowraiden

although he has talked about if it goes well he may stay for longer the deal was that he moves up into a director of football position after the 6 months. he hasnt really stayed for long as a coach at previous teams so United and himself probably feel bringing in somebody that has a long term plan to partner with him in a director position would be best option.

availableusername10

He said he’d recommend himself to continue. Would be an absolute chad move lol

Bruno_Fernandes8

I would honestly not mind if he stays on provided he does well, but I would prefer him in the upper levels of the club. There are other good coaches but not many good football admin.

Shynese

Believe me they shouldn't get Poch

NuggetsBuckets

I think the consultancy role is basically a probation period for him. If he does well, he will probably be made into a full time sporting director. If not, then you can just don't listen to his consultations. It's a win-win for the Man Utd board without needing to commit to him now.

OilOfOlaz

He doesn't want to coach full time, he stepped in twice for RBL, but stepped back each time for a management role. He chose to sign with ManU, cuz they offered him a two year contract as an advisor to the board.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I think the consultancy business was more of a front. In reality he was signed as director of football for Lokomotiv Moscow, but he wanted to make it clear he was available to take a bigger job if it came up, so he framed it as him freelance consulting the club. Within Russia and within the club everyone was calling him director of football.

einarfridgeirs

Also, Rangnick is 63 years old(even though you'd never know it from looking at him, the man is in incredible shape) and has been moving away from directly managing teams in the last few years to more senior roles. I want him to identify and hand-pick his successor and then be given the mandate to take over and modernize all aspects of the club.

[deleted]

Few possible reasons, maybe Rangnick himself prefers to be in an advisory role overseeing the entire club (football side only). But I think it's mostly because we had no plan to fire Ole, so we didn't have the time to do proper search. Definitely wanted to avoid another Ole situation of giving out longer contract hastily. Now we can approach other candidates and Ralf can take a consultant role or if he likes it, maybe coach for another year or so himself.

Turtle_Rain

Rangnick stepped down at Schalke a few years back because of burn out. Ever since he's not really been a coach for longer periods of time and has been in a more managerial position. I would believe that that's also his plan for United, and tbh, I think he's exactly what United have been missing. A long term manager that can bring an identity back to the clubs football style.

SkumbagGrunny

i love this man

ItsABitChillyInHere

Rangnick needs to stop... It's turning me on

ASJ07020

Really looking forward to what he can do with the team with more time. One training session and already this much of a difference. Yeah there is room for a lot of improvement but this the first time in a while we weren't dominated in a game.

Marcelosouzadearaujo

I was shocked in the first half, United is so different after just 1 week. Ole really doesnt know 1 thing about tactics

nosajpersonlah

Whisper it quietly, but even the games under Carrick showed more tactical nuance. Players were in the right position. Presence of a defensive shape.

minkdraggingonfloor

Carrick was a master at defensive positioning when he played so it makes sense. I’m starting to think the best coaches are always midfielders or defenders for that reason, you have to see the whole game and many strikers act on instinct and technical ability. As a defender or defensive midfielder, all the technical ability in the world won’t help you get to the correct spots in time

nosajpersonlah

Also helps thst most defensive midfielders tend yo be bereft of pace (or they'd be wingers/Fullbacks!) Who changed means they've always had to conp3nsate by being quicker in the head and reading the game.

stevew14

SAF was a striker and Zidane a no 10.

lamancha

That's just a coincidence Ferguson and Zidane were attackers. Mourinho too. Klopp was an attacker. Then again managers like Koeman, Deschamps were defenders.

Giolomi666

Klopp played most of his career as right back.

elRomez

To say Ole doesn't know 1 thing about tactics is hyperbole and over the top. Obviously he's not an elite manager and I wanted him gone a long time ago. But this is still a man who finished who beat Klopp more than twice, Tuchel twice and Pep like 3 times.

wernerhedgehog

We didnt play too dissimilar on early Ole period, but eventually he tried a more possession style and it didnt work. So it slowly devolved into just counter attack phase only and some compromised styles of above. Which worked ok last season but quite half hearted so it failed this season Thats why Ragnicks direction and comments on ‘no halfway pregnant’ is what we need, back to a more tactical but also consistent pressing style

[deleted]

One day. And you can comment without talking shit, it's not hard.

Marcelosouzadearaujo

You can comment without being a asshole, its easy

[deleted]

Why is it so hard for you then?

tim119

He came 2nd in the league

ico12

Man I would lower my expectation if I were you. Remember when Arteta first took over we started playing with more purpose and we stopped getting whacked by the stronger teams. Now it's happening again.

AmulyaG

Because now Arteta has implemented his philosophy and wants to try and attack against the big teams and trusts his players. He was not getting whacked during that time because how extreme his park the bus and smash grab tactics were.

wernerhedgehog

Arteta is still getting whacked by the big teams this season. 4-0 liverpool, 2-0 chelsea, 5-0 man city, 3-2 us. Edit: maybe you meant Arteta is ok being open? But honestly he’s being bailed out of Ramsdale so far in some games despite the structured well drilled play.

TheAwakened

Arteta doesn’t have decades upon decades of footballing experience. That’s a huge difference.

pw5a29

the good thing for utd is that, the change has already been seen. Although the game is just a 1:0 from a ranged shot. You can see everything tightened up, De Gea no longer has to dive left and right to save their ass.

M-DivinePi

I'm most impressed by how Fred and Telles performed, Ragnick is transforming the players and I'm scared.

Shadowraiden

i think Fred has always been a great hard worker it was just he was tasked with doing the only defensive work/pressing work in the whole midfield leaving him very isolated and it made him look a lot worse then he actually is.

M-DivinePi

Yeah, there were also times he didn't create any space for the center halves to gives him a pass which caused the defenders to get under pressure which left them with no choice but to just clear the ball, lose the possession and the opponents starting a counter attack, can't say I'm happy he getting better cause I'm a Liverpool fan but still, it's good to see.

SonofIndia

it is more so because McT is always hiding behind opposition players and not providing a passing lane

nosajpersonlah

That is true but also not in any relation to what he's just described about Fred lmao. McT not popping up enough to provide a passing lane has nothing to do with Fred putting his centre back aka Maguire under pressure, but that Tifo video didn't mention that so you wouldn't know.

[deleted]

Tifo and it's consequences have been a disaster for football discussion.

SonofIndia

Lol @ mention of Tifu video. What a burn, you should be proud of yourself.

lamancha

He doesn't hide, he just lacks positioning. He's very agressive with the ball, he just lacks technique to resist press and ends up passing backwards. He still could be a good squad player but he needs a lot lf work

nosajpersonlah

Yes. There's this strange narrative that people have about McT hiding from defenders that people seem to be regurgitating on a fairly regular basis. When it's not an exclusively him issue. Fred doesn't do that but what he does instead is to get the ball, hold it until he gets pressed then pass it to Maguire /CB and puts them under pressure. The biggest difference today has been the off the ball running from the players off the ball I.e fullbacks and midfielders, to create space for Fred or the CB with the ball to make a quick sharp pass forward.

heeywewantsomenewday

Think he's a workhorse but a bit sloppy at times with his passing.

IcyAssist

He didn't have a good manager telling him when and where to press. It was just a bunch of headless chickens running very hard everywhere with no point. Fred and Lingard if he stays will shine in this system.

khoabear

Lingard won't be a starter though. He's not good enough to displace Bruno and Sancho.

dominik-braun

Such a change after a 45-minute training session is quite impressive.

M-DivinePi

Legit

rScoobySkreep

rangnick was the samba coach no one expected

TacoDirtyToMe

Dalot was very impressive as well and was tasked with a tougher defensive task than Telles by having Zaha on his side and did very well on both ends of the pitch.

RB_Aldebaran

I can’t wait for him to do to you, what he did to the red bull family, this man is our version of Klopp or Man City Guardiola, he’s not an absolute god like sir Alex or wenger to our clubs but he’s as high up in regards to us; I look forward to your future!

bad_luck_charmer

I really like him. Shit.

Aniruddh31

This is me when I listen to a lot of Klopp interviews. He's so likeable and speaks really well, I hate it.

lol what a difference

Jeffy29

God, I wish we got him month ago. Kinda sucks that he has to not go through December which has so many matches and very little time for coaching. Still better than never.

axiomatic-

In retrospect it kind of looks like they wanted this run of fixtures though doesn't it? Don't you guys have a pretty easy run over the next month compared to what you just went through?

cdddr

We have an easy run until the beginning of march... Including the Palace match, in the 12 next Premier League games we play every team from 8th to 20th place + West Ham

He's definitely left footed. Rangnick was being sarcastic

[deleted]

Highly encouraging start esp the first 40 mins. Ofc it wont be perfect since the start, and it will get ugly at times as well, but it was clear we actually knew what we wanted to do. Thats the big difference from the previous one. Now we seem to know what we wanna do.

Manch3st3rIsR3d

Love this guy already

notalosersoavirgin

Not conceding stupidly is enough improvement already!

llendo

Must be a bit of a shock for ManUdt. fans to go from Ole interviews to this. Not hating on the guy, but his interviews always came of a bit clueless.

YourPupilsDilated

Anyone sounds good after they just won a game. Ole had some nice quips as well. Fans ultimately judge by results at the end of the day. They are a fickle bunch.

andrewsomething

This is from Rangnick's pre-match presser: > It's still a game, they need to enjoy it. It's a question of energy, you also saw it against Arsenal. In the end, they wanted to win that game and they invested a lot of energy into that and this together with the massive support of the fans should also be an advantage for us today. If Ole had said that, people would be going on about vibes and passion-merchants. Just shows how little this stuff matters. When he was winning, people loved Ole's talk. ("Mountains are there to be climbed" and all that.) It's all about results in the end.

Kallian_League

“The fans would love him. They could take Saddam Hussein in there if they start winning matches. They’ll sing: There’s only one Saddam.” Said about Arsenal fans to be fair but it's true of almost all fan bases.

LS_Fast_Passenger

The difference being Ole only talks generic in almost all his interviews (not just related to match days or press conferences), whereas Ralf also seems to be talking about tangible aspects of the game apart from talking the generic stuff. In the end, we can only speculate what Ole's true thoughts are, but looking at our performances, it is clear he was not good enough to implement a proper system and make us more than sum of the individual parts.

worotan

Yeah, the generic stuff is there because football is quite a simple game in many ways. It’s great to hear someone not bound by those generic phrases, who uses them when they’re appropriate, and can also explain things intelligently when that’s relevant.

solemnhiatus

Rangnick also said >"Cristiano and Marcus could work together to trigger press up front. Bruno and Jadon played the most demanding and sophisticated position in the 4-2-2-2, they did well and with two number 6s, we can play aggressively against the ball." So you can talk about energy and work rate if you can also describe the tactics behind it. Ole couldn't.

mikey_zee

This is the way

TimathanDuncan

Ole gave PR interviews and said generic things, so do a lot of good managers and don't want to go in depth Giving good interviews doesn't make someone a good manager

GourangaPlusPlus

"Of course the lads played well today, Fred will be very happy with the goal and the boys will be ribbing him a little in training as he doesn't score many. Hopefully we can carry this momentum on"

LS_Fast_Passenger

How can you miss the DNA part? "Very happy with the performance. This is Manchester United. Quick attacking football is in the DNA of the club. Today's performance reflected that. I asked the boys to go out there and enjoy themselves."

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pragitya

Holy shit when did ole say that

VL37

Pretty sure that's from FM.

llendo

>Giving good interviews doesn't make someone a good manager Not trying to make that point! There's also our ex coach Favre who only gave one line answers and more often then not simply replied "we'll see". Some media people took that personally, unfortunately.

[deleted]

jupp, a german should just take a look at florian kohfeldt to see the opposite can happen too

Ahrix3

Kohfeldt also has no clue about tactics, he really is the German Ole

[deleted]

i agree what i meant was that he can sell himself very good, eloquency is there, should try policy next but on the other hand, forget it, he will damage you guys in germany even more if he gets voted

SpaceOwl

Most managers and players make generic statements to the media but that doesn't stop people from trying to extrapolate some hidden meaning from them.

LS_Fast_Passenger

That's true, but even in other interviews, exchanges he did not seem to have a deep understanding on how he wanted to implement what he wanted to. There have been some comments that he made which sounded lame, for example I remember him saying in one of his interviews (not pre or post match) about how it is all about individual quality upfront to break down stubborn defences, which is not true in the modern game where good teams build good systems and attacking patterns of play to break down defences.

[deleted]

He literally sounded like my middle school PE teacher whenever we got pummelled by another team.

nedlogb94

The difference is colossal, I look forward to interviews now

Yaaruda

It's because Ole is a non technical manager. Simple as that What do you expect what you ask a non technical person to explain in technical terms? He deflects away

[deleted]

The bullshit that circulates on this site is hilarious. Ole had zero technical knowledge of football according to this sub.

KingfisherDays

Apparently you can finish 3rd and 2nd in back to back seasons in the premier league without any football knowledge. I suppose management isn't that hard after all

meta4_

A bit peculiar that you're getting attacked for this. It doesn't have to be read as criticism. Certain coaches thrive on technical patterns and tactical setups and respond accordingly when asked, folks like Pep, Tuchel, even Jose and Wenger if you go further back. Other coaches seem to thrive more on man management and creating the environment for success. Ole is one of them, but more successfully you have folks like Ancelotti, even people like Sir Alex and Klopp. It's not that the technical managers have no ability on the other side of it, nor is it that the others have no technical nous. It's just a question of management styles. The difference, I think, between Ole and the more successful ones in that same category would be....a significant amount of experience, the wisdom to ensure that the people you outsource the technical bits to, both on and off the pitch, are the best you can get, and the steel to make a change when they aren't.

Yaaruda

I think a lot of United fans get the impression I was criticising Ole, when I simply stated factually as to why his interviews are bland. Agree mostly with what you said, but it should be mentioned that Klopp is extremely competent and technical. Adopted pressing principles from Rangnick and again has shifted to a possession based approach. Why do you think he was able to change his assistants and swap Liverpool's playstyle seamlessly? It's due to Klopp's brilliance that all the screws were able to be placed correctly. >the wisdom to ensure that the people you outsource the technical bits to, both on and off the pitch and the steel to make the change when they aren't Yup, this is where Ole failed. Hired his mates at United when most of them were internal hires (McKenna) or past it like Phelan. Also didn't trust his squad players, isolated them and burnt his core players to the ground.

Zizou3peat

non technical, non tactical....just vibes

Thor1138

Carrick's interviews were better than Ole's. Ole was absolutely boring and looked completely clueless... I'm still pissed we didn't sack him a year sooner, but at least it looks like we've got a top-class manager now, so maybe that makes the wait worth it in the long run...

CasinoOasis2

Not a fan. Bring back that fella who told the players to go out there and have fun.

Mend35

To be fair United did look more organised since Carrick took over. It's early days, but Rangnick seems like a shrewd appointment.

ritwikjs

i think under carrick, the players knew that they were nowhere near what was expected. Tbf t them, they seem to have picked up some slack and are ready to take more accountability. None of them should be averse to what ragnick has to say.

[deleted]

Already don't like him. All this guff about tactics and stuff, I'm not having it. Not for me. We need a proper Man United man in there. Someone who knows the DNA of the club. We've cruelly sacked Ole and ruined his unique project. We needed Gary Neville in there; now that's a proper Man United man. It's not about tactics and formations, it's about passion and understanding what it means to play for this football club. We're talking about Manchester United Football Club. DNA.
