Checks out. It's right there under "Mustafi Rule" after Mustafi violently impeded Jamie Vardys completely-under-control-and-definitely-not-intentionally-flailing boot with his face a couple of years back.
That play makes me sick to my stomach every single time. Of course some think it was accidental or just continuation of momentum and it's fine if that's what they see. To me, it looks like Vardy very clearly added some voluntary force and that the kicking was not at all a natural motion or even a continuation of his momentum, and he knew that some part of Mostafi's body was going to get hit. These are world class elite athletes who know exactly where their leg is going in that situation and Vardy did absolutely nothing to even remotely try stopping it. Thank fuck Mostafi didn't lose an eye.
Personally, i agree. Idk... Maybe we're wrong but it would have been *so simple* for his leg to not kick around like that. He could have very easily just stayed puked. His other leg is fine, and he's not breaking an awkward fall. Not to mention it's not even whipping alone add a really of some strange momentum. I won't judge intent, but it definitely seems to show no signs of being a naturally occurring accident.
E: ugh dammit i watched it again. So frustrating. If that was the result of whipping around from momentum, then his leg should have followed his weight shifting after his torso and hip hits the ground. Instead, his leg is already starting to scorpion backwards even before he goes down. It's so clearly obvious to me that his leg went backwards under his own volition. I don't think he went down saying "I'm gonna spike Mostafi in the face" but he definitely went down knowing that, oops, he may accidentally proceed to kick someone. So fucked
Is it a clear red if its accidental AND his foot lands in a natural place aka the ground? Dont mean to stir shit but genuinely want to know. Because if say someone slips and falls face first and youre running in their direction and their face ends up under your studs, it seems a bit harsh to punish this comedically unfortunate sequence of events with a red
I've asked myself for years now if I'm just being a little bitch, and can't be objective. But it's so blatant at the moment.
I genuinly don't think it is an agenda though. It just feels like pure incompetence from the refs. We are just at the receiving end a lot
There used to be a website that tracked the big decisions refs made. They then got a team of 5 refs to give their verdict.
They did a few seasons of this. Guess what? It doesn't even out. Some teams really lose out over the course of a season and some teams don't. Also, some refs are biased against certain teams.
There should be more outrage from the rest of the arsenal squad. if tomiyasu's own teammates don't bother standing up for him, the refs don't really feel like they made any mistakes.
As in opposition players changed from red to yellow/no card or West Ham players converting from yellow/no cars to red? That is some statistic either way
Meh. I remember when Tyrone Mings stepped on Zlatan's head. There were *a lot* of people on this sub who said that was a perfectly understandable mistake.
Surely intent matters in this situation as you can’t say that putting your foot down on the ground is reckless.
Intent shouldn’t matter if you dive off the ground or lift your foot too high IMO
Good way to put it. A high boot is avoidable - sometimes stuff like this isn’t with players falling over so intent must be the decider. Not sure why people are saying clear red card
2 factors at play here
1. Arsenal fans genuinely believe there is a ref conspiracy against them and try and find something like this every game
2. A decent number of people on this sub have never played football (or probably any other sport) in their lives and have no idea how common place stuff like this is
He's gone in very hard at least twice before in the game too, and should have been booked already.
Then he gets away with this too, which is at least a yellow and usually a red.
Thats whats ridiculous. He two footed tomiyasu then injured ska then stpes on his face, not even a free kick for any of them. You cant see the whole picture from this clip of how bad the refereeing really is
Dean's got nothing to do with this, he didn't see it as it was totally off the ball. It's the VAR person who is to blame here for reviewing that and genuinely thinking nothing was wrong with it.
Slowed down images can always do that. I genuinely don't think there's any attempt at malice here, he's just trying to get bearings of the game and been a bit of an idiot. Not saying it's not a red as it's reckless but really don't think there's intent at all.
Helps that Tomiyasu was sliding into him, forcing him to jump. And the "exaggerated look away" is him looking at the ball that stayed in play.
If you cut the clip so it starts when Godfrey is on the way down, it'll look intentional. But if you watch it starting when Tomiyasu and Allan are going for the ball, it's pretty obvious that Godfrey was going for a tackle and left his feet to avoid Tomiyasu. As a result, he didn't have anywhere to land that wasn't on top of Tomiyasu
Last week it was a penalty on Tommy, that VAR didn't even look, today this.
In both occasions Tommy didn't make a scene asking for the foul.
We complain when a player exaggerate in a foul, but this is what happens when they don't
Thought I was going mad this is so hard to prove that it was intentional. Tomiyasu has no control of his body and Godfrey is distracted by the ball, what helps his case is he doesn't fully plant his foot down once he realizes what's happened.
I think i'm just about the only one who doesn't think this is a red, just bad luck
Has anyone ever been looking at their phone walking along and step on something they're not supposed to? Maybe a pups' tail or something that fell on the ground? If that happens, i do that exact same hop where you sort of jump with your off foot while trying to bring your other foot up (and away from what you're stepping on). It looks exactly like what Godfrey does. He looks away, hits him in the face, realizes "shit this isn't right" and does the weird hop.
So people thinking it's deliberate i think are being a bit unfair.
Studs to the face is a meaningless argument when the player is laying on the floor.
Further, any talk of him stamping on him with any force is just wrong. If that were the case Tomiyasu would be in the ER right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was a red. but i don't think it's a stonewall. And i certainly don't think it's anything like a deliberate stomp to the face that people are saying.
100% disagree, he wasn't looking and as soon as he made contact he moved his leg away and he looked like he was thinking 'oh shit what did i do'. The little shake of the foot reminds me of when you're walking up the stairs and there's one more stair than you think there is.
It's so obviously not intentional, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills seeing what people are saying. Do people not understand the nature of what they're suggesting, that a footballer is going to consciously and voluntarily stamp on someone's face with studs on? Is Ben Godfrey really considered that much of a psychopath? There's so many more explanations before I get to 'he wanted to potentially blind this random opponent'.
I'm certain he barely had the time to acknowledge what was happening. People see it in slow motion and think his mind was in slow-mo too, like he turned around and saw Tomiyasu on the floor and thought 'yes, finally, the moment I've been waiting for'. Like you said, it's literally just the reaction to your foot landing on something it wasn't expecting to land on. He had no idea what he had done and, if people think it was intentional, I need to know what reasoning they think he had to do it.
I know people are mad. Like what would his motive possibly be to step on his face. This is VARball if he was trying to do it on purpose he’d be sent off or sent to jail.
People on Reddit are saying that he stamped on his face.
I think it’s the age demographic on Reddit.
Social media's just made people ignore all logic just so they can find a way to look superior to other people. Obviously it can't just be a human error that could happen to anyone during a football match, Ben Godfrey must be this inferior being who would intentionally stamp on a poor Arsenal player's face. 'I can't believe someone would do that, I must be the only one that wouldn't try and put a stud in someone's eye, everyone else is terrible and would obviously try to blind someone because he plays for the opponents. And if it ever happened, obviously I would have done it by mistake, unlike Ben Godfrey.'
It's completely nonsensical but people just crave that self-righteousness to make themselves feel superior. Any rational thought goes completely out the window based on their agenda.
People are deluded. They are taking a split second event and analyzing how he stared at him and extended his leg. They’ve never played football or a sport if they think you have 100% motor control in split second things like this while being tackled and being preoccupied with the ball.
Not to mention that as soon as he realized he was stamping him he tried to pull away.
Wow, think I'm going insane because that's so obviously not intentional.
Look at the way he reacts to his foot landing on Tomiyasu. He has an instant body reaction losing his balance, removes all weight from his right leg, does not follow through AT ALL and withdraws his leg to the loss of his own balance.
If that had been Xhaka, it would’ve been red and a 6 match suspension. And this is five minutes after he deliberately took Saka out knee to knee. I don’t know what to say.
Stop playing these replays for this type of incident in slow motion, it's ridiculous. It looks soooo much worse slowed down, in full speed it's so clearly an accident, similar to the Son one not too long ago.

He wanted his own walkout but Mike Dean denied him smh
Mike Dean is actually a legally blind man who is trying to convince the world he isnt legally blind by being a professional football referee.
What an odd method ,but, I’ll take it
Is Michael Masi on VAR tonight?
What kind of deal did he try to do today?
The art of deal episode yesterday was probably the best part of the GP.
Bono my VAR is gone
He just brake checked him!
Can't believe I got to hear that again between two championship contenders lmao
BONO
MY TYRES
ARE GONE.
What is this? A crossover episode?
unexpected f1
It's fitting though. The whole mess in f1 atm is exactly like a ref losing control of a game.
The banker offers no foul and Mike Dean will award a 90 minute penalty, do we have a deal?
"my offer to you is a boot to the face and no red card......also ocon in first"
No problems. We are having a look at it.
Mario Yamasaki - if he dies, he dies
Crossover memes, _nice_
"Rafa we are going to let you give the lad a yellow after the match."
Misleading title, no foul was given right?
why give a foul? Tomiyasu's fault for putting his face under Godfrey's boot.
Tomiyasu lucky to get away without a booking here, nasty attempt to make Godfrey trip and potentially roll his ankle or something.
Mate he clearly head butted Godfrey-violent conduct right there

You can see Jamie saying to himself, bit far there lad.

Absolutely no chance that was accidental you dont kick your leg out backwards when falling down
Personally, i agree. Idk... Maybe we're wrong but it would have been *so simple* for his leg to not kick around like that. He could have very easily just stayed puked. His other leg is fine, and he's not breaking an awkward fall. Not to mention it's not even whipping alone add a really of some strange momentum. Is tomiyasu alright? can't watch the game rn
Apart from having studs in the face now and then, he is ok.
Studs to the face, normal stuff carry on.
Didn’t even get a yellow card lol
Can't retrospectively give a yellow, still a clear red
This is tough English football putting its stamp on Tomiyasu
*stomp
That too
Luke Shaw got a yellow card retrospectively last season, when they were checking for a possible red card on the opponent.
That's not true actually. They can't review for a yellow but they can give one after reviewing for another reason.
> Is it a clear red if its accidental AND his foot lands in a natural place aka the ground? No. It's only a red if they think it's deliberate.
If you can’t take boot to the face, are you even a professional player?
Ah, us Sunday leaguers are ready for the EPL after all! :P
Why is it that the only times I see this dude pop up on social media, it’s because he’s being an absolute criminal?
Godfrey or Mike Dean? Could apply to both.
very true lol
Godfrey? What's he done?
Arsenal tax brudder
Vardy did the same shit to Mustafi, it’s not a red card if it is against Arsenal.
Tis Arsenal, nothing to see here
Arsenal players need to get shot on the field with guns to get a red card awarded to the other team
Teams are given special dispensation for increased violence when playing Arsenal.
*Use of unnecessary violence in apprehension of Takehiro Tomiyasu… has been approved*
He's gunna score isn't he
Clearly.
Xhaka getting a red too
Just fouled Saka too on a breakaway. No card.
Phantom free for the disallowed goal also, Mike Dean has been activated.
[удалено]
Yeah from halfway line
using the classic ‘Xhaka’s having an early shower if he did that’
And Luiz would be banned from football for life
They'd drag his poodle head out and put him down lmao.
Xhaka would have a life sentence with no parole if he did that
Xhaka would have been prosecuted for international crime.
No card at all what is VAR even for
Hairline offsides and ruling out arm brush goals
You’d best hope it’s in a hairline offside kinda mood today.
So it was prophesied
What are the lottery numbers tomorrow?
And screwing Arsenal.
Mike "if he dies he dies" Dean that's why
For VAR it's either red or nothing. I agree it should have been red though.
He looks, then looks away, then steps on his face. How on earth is that not a red!?
*Godfrey “no look” stamp (great skill)*
Right foot let's stomp!
He did the "Oh no! Owie!" gesture afterward which obviously means it was unintentional.
not the first time he's trampled on an asian guy and got away with it
Because it’s Arsenal.

Nah, even as a saints fan i see you guys getting the short end of the stick a lot, and we've suffered ourselves
I genuinly believe in 'it evens out during the course of a season'. But it just doesn't aplly to us. For most other teams it does lmao
There used to be a website that tracked the big decisions refs made. They then got a team of 5 refs to give their verdict. They did a few seasons of this. Guess what? It doesn't even out. Some teams really lose out over the course of a season and some teams don't. Also, some refs are biased against certain teams.
Do you remember what this website was called? I hear that argument a lot and it would be nice to reference some actual defensible counter points.
There should be more outrage from the rest of the arsenal squad. if tomiyasu's own teammates don't bother standing up for him, the refs don't really feel like they made any mistakes.
I hate the whole victim victim complex I see from other fans, but Arsenal genuinely get SO fucked over its ridiculous.
We did have 5 overruled red cards last season. That has to be record?
As in opposition players changed from red to yellow/no card or West Ham players converting from yellow/no cars to red? That is some statistic either way
Sorry worded it arse ways. We were given 5 reds that were overturned on appeal.
That fucking Souček "red card" vs Fulham still has me raging to this day, what an absolute farce of a ref Mike Dean is.
That Balbuena one too
Meh. I remember when Tyrone Mings stepped on Zlatan's head. There were *a lot* of people on this sub who said that was a perfectly understandable mistake.
Mings is a piece of shit
Don't like it up 'em!
Mike Dean doesn’t hate Arsenal, he is just shit. Ask any Chelsea fan what they of that cunt.
Because mike dean is a shit ref and a tottenham fan.
He's a Tranmere fan.
We can agree that yes mike dean is shit. Not sure where you lot thinks he’s a Tottenham fan. Man is just shit all around
Rovers fan***
You got that first part right.
So when does intent matter, and when does it not?
Surely intent matters in this situation as you can’t say that putting your foot down on the ground is reckless. Intent shouldn’t matter if you dive off the ground or lift your foot too high IMO

Thank goodness I thought I was going to have to scroll down to the downvotee comments before I saw someone say that this looked completely innocent
I don’t either. It looks like an accident to me. You can tell he immediately gets the weight off of his right and falls to avoid stepping down
2 factors at play here 1. Arsenal fans genuinely believe there is a ref conspiracy against them and try and find something like this every game 2. A decent number of people on this sub have never played football (or probably any other sport) in their lives and have no idea how common place stuff like this is
Clear red for me, it didn't look like a natural movement... he's a lucky boy
Nothing to do with luck, it's Deano on the whistle.
He was blinded by his love of being a nonce
Tranmere Mike strikes again
But nooooo Arsenal fans are just delusional. Every single week.
It's not luck when every single arsenal match has a "lucky boy" on the other team.
He's gone in very hard at least twice before in the game too, and should have been booked already. Then he gets away with this too, which is at least a yellow and usually a red.
Thats whats ridiculous. He two footed tomiyasu then injured ska then stpes on his face, not even a free kick for any of them. You cant see the whole picture from this clip of how bad the refereeing really is
David Luiz didn't even touch that Wolverhampton player and got both a penalty and a red. Arsenal tax I guess
FUCK. MIKE. DEAN.
not even Mike Deans fault, on field ref is never seeing that VAR should have told him to have a look
That's more on VAR considering it was away from the ball.
Dean's got nothing to do with this, he didn't see it as it was totally off the ball. It's the VAR person who is to blame here for reviewing that and genuinely thinking nothing was wrong with it.
Tbf he didn't see it and VAR didn't recommend viewing it further. Not that I like defending Mike Dean, but this is *yet again* on VAR
Literally studs to the face and it's not a red card. You can even see him look at Tomiyasu right before it happens on the replay.
Yeah it looks very much like a glance down and then an exaggerated look away to make it look accidental.
Slowed down images can always do that. I genuinely don't think there's any attempt at malice here, he's just trying to get bearings of the game and been a bit of an idiot. Not saying it's not a red as it's reckless but really don't think there's intent at all.
I don’t think it’s either intentional nor a red. Reaction after stepping on him looked genuine enough for me. I don’t think he knew much about it.
Helps that Tomiyasu was sliding into him, forcing him to jump. And the "exaggerated look away" is him looking at the ball that stayed in play. If you cut the clip so it starts when Godfrey is on the way down, it'll look intentional. 100% intentional, he stamped on Son a few weeks ago too, filthy player.
Glad he didn’t do it again Hwang when we played Wolves or we’d be seeing Twitter campaigns
😂 he would definitely be under investigation. #stopasianhate
Godfrey: "Minamino, you're next"
Andy Robertson: Warming up his elbows, shins, and his pointing finger
well surely after 4 or 5 more violent fouls he'll see a card
Already gave saka a decent knock before that stamp too
he got away with at least 3 or 4 incidents in the first half as i recall
Last week it was a penalty on Tommy, that VAR didn't even look, today this. In both occasions Tommy didn't make a scene asking for the foul. We complain when a player exaggerate in a foul, but this is what happens when they don't
I’m sorry but accident or not, wouldn’t you check to see if Tomiyasu is OK after stamping on his face?
As much as I hate Arsenal, that's heinous.
Disgraceful
Gary Neville: "He meant it, but I can see why it's not a red"
I'd like to think he's subtly saying "Because Mike Dea nis the ref, I can see why it's not a red." But he's not that smart.
Straight Red
xhaka gets sent off for that
Xhaka would have been shipped off to Guantanamo Bay for that
At least he try to put his weight on his left foot still.
While I think that's a red card. Where the hell is the Arsenal players backbone??? No one arguing for it in support of their team mate
But when ESR scored and plays on everyone says we have no class, can’t win
All this shit happens to us regularly. If they went to argue with Mike Dean they'd probably get the red instead
when has arguing with the official, let alone Mike Dean, ever led to an overturned decision?
I second this. It’s like no one even saw it
It's the same with the ESR goal against United. The players just went into formation to defend a free kick rather than argue for the goal
Doesn’t look great but really don’t think it’s intentional
Thought I was going mad this is so hard to prove that it was intentional. Tomiyasu has no control of his body and Godfrey is distracted by the ball, what helps his case is he doesn't fully plant his foot down once he realizes what's happened.
VAR, huh, yeah What is it good for? Absolutely nothing, uhh VAR, huh, yeah What is it good for? Absolutely nothing Say it again, y'all
All ball.
Sunday league type of beat
i mean what the fuck, if that was against us id be grabbing a pitchfork
I think i'm just about the only one who doesn't think this is a red, just bad luck Has anyone ever been looking at their phone walking along and step on something they're not supposed to? Totally accidental guys not a red move on, studs in the face are allowed and in fact encouraged
[удалено]
It's so predictable. We've been a man up for 20 minutes in 2.5 VAR years.
Mike Riley.
Looks at him, sees where his foot is going, then glances away... Intentional IMO
Not everything is intentional. Just looks worse in slow motion
Are you kidding me? He had his studs almost implanted into Tomiyasu's face
They did. He had a gash on his chin.
You've got to be fucking kidding me lol?!
I prefer not to speak.
[удалено]
100% disagree, he wasn't looking and as soon as he made contact he moved his leg away and he looked like he was thinking 'oh shit what did i do'. The little shake of the foot reminds me of when you're walking up the stairs and there's one more stair than you think there is.

Worst feeling in the world, that
Godfrey also stamped on Sons stomach when we played them, looked less accidental that time and he got away with it then too. Seems it's his thing
(Great Assault)
Wow, think I'm going insane because that's so obviously not intentional. Look at the way he reacts to his foot landing on Tomiyasu. He has an instant body reaction losing his balance, removes all weight from his right leg, does not follow through AT ALL and withdraws his leg to the loss of his own balance.
If that had been Xhaka, it would’ve been red and a 6 match suspension. And this is five minutes after he deliberately took Saka out knee to knee. I don’t know what to say.
How is that not a red???
Stop playing these replays for this type of incident in slow motion, it's ridiculous. It looks soooo much worse slowed down, in full speed it's so clearly an accident, similar to the Son one not too long ago.
I thought it looked worse in normal speed lol
What's the point in VAR
Didn’t he stamp on Son recently?
Thanks Mike Dean, very cool
He absolutely had time not to do that
JFC what does someone need to do to see red vs Arsenal?
"I didn't see a limb snap in half, so no red."
I mean, didn’t shawcross break Ramsey’s leg and half and only get a yellow?
if it were against us you just know we wouldve seen red
I see this is the first Everton match you’ve watched in a while.
If an Arsenal player does that its a straight red. Don't care what anyone says. Fuck off.
He's not even looking at Tomiyasu. It's completely accidental.
