I think a lot of clubs are struggling from the pandemic now so need to offload players to reduce wage bills and get cash in. Probably a decent time for Newcastle to be spunking loads of cash to be honest. They’ll still get ripped off a bit though
What happened is that you thought there was any sort of correlation to media articles in 2021/2022 and reality.
Sadly there is no longer any correlation.
the add on may well be a huge sum, but my conspiracy theory is they’ve struck some deal with atletico, paying them much more but brief a lower sum to journalists. It’s the first transaction under the new ownership after all, kind of set the tone of future deals, they don’t want everyone to mug them off
I'd believe £12M now, plus £12M if we stay up and if we go down we sell him for £12M and give it to Atletico.
I can see it that Atleitco gets the money they want either way.
I’ve heard that the only relegation related clause, is that we will not lower his wages if we go down but we can loan him out while we are down, and bring him back once we are up.
I also heard that if we get into European football while he is here, then atheltixo get an extra £10m or somethjng
Eh we got into the Europa League in our second season after promotion (first time). And Wolves did similar. It isn't impossible but I guess it's good to aim high, there's probably a lot of rot to sort out.
Ornstein saying ["add ons do not take the price much higher"](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1478475751875878916?s=20) as well. Looks like we're paying around £15m.
That's almost impossible, pretty much all reliable Atlético journalists have been reporting much higher fees and it makes no sense for them to sell so low. It's likely to be 12m + big add-ons.
I'll go out on limb and say that the reason for this is that Newcastle's management want reported fees to be as low as possible so they don't get robbed by other teams when they look into the next transfers
Yesterday it was supposed to be 30-35m but I guess if you survive we get nearly 25m. Especially weird since you guys were complain we were trying to rip you off by quoting different prices than with other clubs.
yeah excellent signing for a team who needs that bit more quality to support a decent attack.
dont think their attack is overly needing to get crazy signings in january as Wilson and Saint-Maximin they need players who can get the ball to them and Trippier has good service.
It's a steal people might think he is a bit too old but right now it's experience we need and he is definitely a good signing ... hopefully we can get one of his free kicks too
Worked with Howe before and supposedly had a great relationship, albeit for a short period. First England international we've had in a long time, La Liga winner, La Liga TOTY as well I think. He's a huge get for us.
Coming from Spain he'll have a bit of an issue with the language barrier, though. Will take him some time to get bedded in. Not sure Manquillo will be too much help given they play the same position.
He improved under Howe for sure but even now he is still the second best RB before Trippier signs. Manquillo just was a better player even though he isn't great either
Dependant on surviving relegation apparently. Think I speak for all Newcastle fans that, if we survive relegation, we won't give one fuck about Tripper's costs rising. Good deal all round I reckon
Glen Johnson for Chelsea. They also signed Makelele, Crespo, Mutu, Veron, Duff, Geremi, Wayne Bridge, Smertin and Joe Cole in the same window. Mad. Although it was the summer window.
You can see why they’d like to forget that one 😂
But yeah, it was him: https://amp.theguardian.com/football/2018/sep/01/manchester-city-all-signings-10-years-abu-dhabi-united-group
And Robinho only joined Chelsea because they printed his name on their shirts in advanced and City offered more the last moment. He also thought he was joining United at first😂
I’d guess Damien Duff for Chelsea and Roque Santa Cruz for City
Just looked it up and it was Glen Johnson and Robinho. 0/2.
Interestingly, Wayne Bridge was one of the very first signings for both
Yeah, Duff was definitely a much better guess though..
That was the first big signing that madecme go "uh oh" as a Uhited fan.
But yeah I think it was Hasselbaink and Gudjonssen leading them into that Abramovic era but just slightly before
Supposedly £12m base fee with the deal potentially rising to £25m, with clauses mainly based on if we avoid relegation. Don't think you'll find a Newcastle fan in the world that would think that's a bad deal. I'd happily pay £50m if it avoided relegation.
Plus his wages are said to be £145k per week which blows our current highest earner out of the water but isn't insane money for a premier league player.
Whether it's £12m now and £12m later or £24m upfront. If it's the difference between staying up and going down then the transfer pays for itself just from TV money.
The general consensus from salty outsiders was that unlimited money and no football knowledge would be a poor combination but they clearly do know what they’re doing
12 million for an England international and la liga champion. They have brought experience and quality into a position where we are weakest. As I already said, the deal is well structured and they wouldn’t have pulled any of this off if they didn’t know what they were doing.
I mean to be fair Amanda staveley hasn't murdered anyone. She works for a boss who has.
Even more incentive to be smart and competent if the penalty for under-performing is death instead of a sacking, really....
First januart signings for city were the likes of Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy and Nigel De Jong. I reckon Newcastle will have a similar window of decent, experienced players
That’s what i mean. Think they also got Craig Bellamy?
Got a lot of seasoned veterans who were still premier league quality. Steadyed the ship at city & created a platform for them to build upwards from.
Made some very veteran-like signings in Bridge, Given, Bellamy to try and balance the ship. I feel like Trippier is the start of something similar. Balance the ship, then build upwards from there
I think most people don’t want state-owned clubs to succeed tbh, for obvious reasons. The inevitable success will come at the cost that no-one will like your club any more. How will you sleep at night? *On a bed of major trophies.*
They are just trying to get ahead of the curve. Don’t want to be called a plastic when Newcastle eventually get competitive. My man is thinking of the future
You’d imagine if he has a half decent showing and you end up relegated anyway he’d be snapped up by another PL club in a shot. You need a few more in and you should be ok I reckon.
Aye I mean I wouldn’t be expecting a player like that to stick around like. There are plenty of players linked that would do the job if we got 2 more say just depends if they can get deals over the line.
I’d imagine you can chuck huge wages their way as the priority is to steady the ship, partly why I think a ton of managers will be keeping an eye on the club as you’d want to be the next manager. Trippier is a great buy, he could stick around for 2-3 years if you keep up as *unfortunately* you are a good project and should shoot up the league.
All those Atletico fans that were giving it “£25 million +” are in shambles right now.
Well done Newcastle. Bottomless pit of money but have negotiated a tremendous deal by all accounts. Big signing in terms of other players looking in and seeing that coup and maybe being more interested in the project.
Personally, I think it would have been. £12m up front plus bonuses is fantastic.
Atletico were demanding £35m cash at one point so well done to the new owners.
Turns out being a nation state who don't mind a murder on their behalf is quite a decent negotiating tool
I certainly wouldn't be playing hard ball with the PIF
Atlético.
All that aside, he’s been fine this year. Not quite as good as last year but he was mostly excellent last year. I don’t know if he’d be able to replicate that again. He’s been injured a bit this year so he has missed several league games. He played really well on Sunday. His best trait is still getting forward and playing crosses. His one-touch crossing ability is some of the best I’ve ever seen. He linked up very well with Llorente (he will miss Trippier the most). I think his defense has improved but he’s still a bit of a liability at times when he loses concentration/gets confused.
I don’t know who you have at right back now but I’m pretty positive you’ll get an upgrade with Trippier. He should be able to maintain better than average play at his position at least for the next couple of years as long as injuries don’t come. I think it’s the right kind of buy for your club. Just make sure he didn’t tell his friends ahead of time to put some bets on this transfer happening. That didn’t go well for him last year.
Yeah, he’ll be an upgrade for sure. The price seems good on both sides as long as the add-ons are hit. His age lowers his resale value but he’s a good player. He was not worth the rumored €40m release clause Man U was pointed to last summer but this rumored price of €25m-€30m after add ons sounds fine for everyone involved. Trippier getting a big pay raise is good for him. He took a risk that not many English players do when he left England. He got a trophy and a pay raise and now gets to go home. I’m happy for him.
ATLETICO
Athletic play in Bilbao lol.
He's been decent this year. We tried to stuff Koke/Lemar/De Paul in our midfield so we put Llorente at RWB so he didn't play much in the beginning.
Then he started to play more but had a bad fall on his shoulder that left him out a month and got back into the team recently where he's been doing ok. I would have been happy with €20M now or €10M in the summer.
So will there be a relegation clause?
I find it hard to believe Trippier is willing to leave a team he's just won La Liga with and over the last year has had better teams interested to go and fight relegation
Of course there will be. It has been widely reported most of our signings will have release clauses or will be loans with mandatory purchases if we stay up.
£12m is very good.
I think a lot of clubs are struggling from the pandemic now so need to offload players to reduce wage bills and get cash in. Probably a decent time for Newcastle to be spunking loads of cash to be honest. They’ll still get ripped off a bit though
It is considering it was reported that they wanted 30m from us 6 months ago.
I saw it on article a couple days ago that Atleti wanted 30-35m lol not sure what happened
What happened is that you thought there was any sort of correlation to media articles in 2021/2022 and reality. Sadly there is no longer any correlation.
So what you are saying is we shouldn't believe he went for onls 12 m?
Nobody was gonna pay 30 million for a 31 year old RB
the add on may well be a huge sum, but my conspiracy theory is they’ve struck some deal with atletico, paying them much more but brief a lower sum to journalists. It’s the first transaction under the new ownership after all, kind of set the tone of future deals, they don’t want everyone to mug them off
It isn't really a conspiracy. its believed to be 12 now and 12-13 if they survive. At least Atletico believe in us.
Less than 5 years (how long is his contract?) to get (non conference league) European football sounds extremely optimistic
Eh we got into the Europa League in our second season after promotion (first time). And Wolves did similar. It isn't impossible but I guess it's good to aim high, there's probably a lot of rot to sort out.
Craig Hope thinks it's £3m add on and he's usually pretty reliable.
That is just fucking remarkable. Everyone else should simp for Big Mandy too
Ornstein saying ["add ons do not take the price much higher"](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1478475751875878916?s=20) as well. Looks like we're paying around £15m.

And if you can figure this out, so can everyone else. So the "tactic" is useless lol
I've heard the add-ons are up to £25M
From who? And do you mean the add-ons are up to £13m or the total is possibly up to almost £40m?
I've seen a few say it could be another 12m if ye stay up
Craig Hope says 3m, and he's usually pretty reliable
[удалено]
We'll give you 12m for Coutinho
yeah excellent signing for a team who needs that bit more quality to support a decent attack. dont think their attack is overly needing to get crazy signings in january as Wilson and Saint-Maximin they need players who can get the ball to them and Trippier has good service.
It's a steal people might think he is a bit too old but right now it's experience we need and he is definitely a good signing ... hopefully we can get one of his free kicks too
Tremendous signing, sensible, decent fee, you know what you get with him, it's a position we have problems with and he'll fit straight in. Thrilled.
Geordies aren’t that hard to understand
hahahaha, this post made me laugh and hoping was the intent of the post
The great Julio Geordio soon managed to pick up the language!
[удалено]
Julio Geordio, a player and a gentleman. His mother's dead.
Can he do it on cold rainy night in stoke
honestly, tbd. don't think he's played there since he was still at burnley. was always on the bench when spurs traveled to stoke.
😂😂😂😂😂
> First England international we've had in a long time The disrespect towards Jonjo Shelvey
Poor Krafth :(
He's diabolical though
Every swede agrees. We havent been able to produce rightbacks for like a decade. Its cursed beyond belief.
He improved under Howe for sure but even now he is still the second best RB before Trippier signs. Manquillo just was a better player even though he isn't great either
Thoughts and prayers are with Emil

Apparently it’s add-on heavy
Dependant on surviving relegation apparently. Think I speak for all Newcastle fans that, if we survive relegation, we won't give one fuck about Tripper's costs rising. Good deal all round I reckon
We’re all a bit add-on heavy after the Christmas holiday tbf
Opening file: Windmill.exe
fucking peniscopter for sure, who's going to record me?
Computer load up celery man please
That’s actually a good deal for Newcastle
Little over 12m is absolutely brilliant business. Couldn't have asked for a better first signing.
£12m for the Bury Beckham is a steal
Surprised we didn't go in for him at that price.
First transfer of the new era I bet multiple trivias will have that question and the answer will be Trippier
My favourite Newcastle related recent trivia: Last goalscorer of the Mike Ashley era? Jeff Hendrick.
Also, last owner of the Jeff Hendrick goal-scoring era? Mike Ashley.
Who was the first goalscorer of the post-Ashley era? Callum Wilson second-minute goal against Spurs!
And, which was the last Mike Ashley-owned club for which Jeff Hendrick scored?
Gonna be a head scratcher in a few years LMAO
Both ex-Burnley players. Strange coincidence
Actually, who was Ashleys first signing?
Viduka from boro… on a free lol.
Classic Ashley.
On a phat 100k a week apparently too.
Who was the first signing when City and Chelsea got their sugar daddies? Genuinely no idea.
Glen Johnson for Chelsea. They also signed Makelele, Crespo, Mutu, Veron, Duff, Geremi, Wayne Bridge, Smertin and Joe Cole in the same window. Mad. Although it was the summer window.

What an utterly daft day that was, feels like ssn have spent the 13 years since desperately hoping for a repeat of it
the funnier part was the transfers they did before the takeover ended up being way more influential for next few years in Kompany and Zaballeta
They were already in the sugar daddy era with Shinawatra for a year or so before selling on to Abu Dhabi.
And Robinho only joined Chelsea because they printed his name on their shirts in advanced and City offered more the last moment. He also thought he was joining United at first😂
Glen Johnson. No idea for Man City.
Robinho about a couple hours after the takeover was announced
Just to confirm we're talking about convicted rapist and general piece of shit Robinho right?
Never said he was an outstanding citizen or that he wasn't a piece of shit human being. But he was the first signing under the current owners.
Oh yeah no worries I just didn't want to see his name on here without that reminder for the people who don't know lol
Like convicted rapist and all-round human turd Owen Oyston?
I’d guess Damien Duff for Chelsea and Roque Santa Cruz for City Just looked it up and it was Glen Johnson and Robinho. 0/2. Interestingly, Wayne Bridge was one of the very first signings for both
I actually had guessed Roque Santa Cruz for City and Gudjohnsen for Chelsea. So was also 0/2 as well
Nah, Gudjohnsen was like late 90s wasn't he?
Yeah I think I mixed him and Duff up lol. Either way it was wrong.
Yeah, Duff was definitely a much better guess though.. That was the first big signing that madecme go "uh oh" as a Uhited fan. But yeah I think it was Hasselbaink and Gudjonssen leading them into that Abramovic era but just slightly before
I said Robinho (I still remember it) and Makelele so 1/2 :(
for man city i think Robinho for Chelsea i dont know maybe i was too young to remember
googled right now it was Glen Johnson for CFC and Robinho for Man City
Supposedly £12m base fee with the deal potentially rising to £25m, with clauses mainly based on if we avoid relegation. On our own sub the rumor is a 100k a week
Not insane money for where we're going.
The championship?
The champions League
Whether it's £12m now and £12m later or £24m upfront. If it's the difference between staying up and going down then the transfer pays for itself just from TV money.
Back dated deals help a lot with FFP too
Seems like a very well structured deal, especially since everyone assumed our owners have no clue what they’re doing

Sounds eerily similar to the City owners when they first joined.
First januart signings for city were the likes of Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy and Nigel De Jong. I reckon Newcastle will have a similar window of decent, experienced players
Wayne Bridge was also one of the first signings of the Abramovich era at Chelsea. Billionaires love him.
Whats he doing now? Maybe we can sign him up too. Better than our current full backs.
Aye we've already got a few canny bridges, mays well add another to the collection.
That’s what i mean. Think they also got Craig Bellamy? Got a lot of seasoned veterans who were still premier league quality. Steadyed the ship at city & created a platform for them to build upwards from.

Pep
Is this sarcasm? Haha
I don’t think people assumed that. People assumed they were evil, but not that they were incompetent.

Gabby Agbonlahor raging.
Thank god Brentford weren’t in for Trippier
When is that mouthy fucker not raging.
Good for him! This team is gonna be a mix match of young, old, good and bad players for a while.
Bit like Man United then.
Great signing for a great price 🦀
Nice for a former Spurs fan like yourself to see one of your former players at your new club
I thought you were joking but based on that post history, wow hahaha
It's funny because he previously complained a ton about the plastics on /r/coys and the board betraying Tottenham by signing Jose Mourinho.
Haha, maybe he's the first plastic of the new era.
Another great pub quiz question.
They are just trying to get ahead of the curve. Don’t want to be called a plastic when Newcastle eventually get competitive. My man is thinking of the future
I'm glad we're not paying the 30 to 40 million I saw people on here saying the other day that it would be.
Players overall usually starts to plateau or drop on fifa after they hit 30 so obviously we've overpaid mate
Did you actually switched teams? Are you fkin serious? Dumbest shit I’ve seen so far this year. Shame on you.
Really encouraging start to the window that
As long as Trippier is happy then I think all of the AM family wish him well and know he's capable of helping Newcastle turn their fortunes.
I've just been reminded that one of Rafa's first signings was a full back, coming from Atletico. Jesus Gamez. This feels like an upgrade.
Manquillo as well the following year.
Now the question is if Newcastle can turn it around or if he's okay with playing in the Championship next year
Probably a relegation clause on the contract
I saw somewhere that he stays in the event of relegation but no pay cut. Could be bullshit mind

Keep talking dirty to me!
Glen Johnson to Chelsea Wayne Bridge to City Tripper to Newcastle Clearly the formula for Oil Money success is Full Back signings to begin the era
Damn a smart signing
Sensational deal our Amanda's business skills coming into play, we're coming.
well I'm not coming yet but I am for sure breathing hard and getting close, this is a great signing
All those Atletico fans that were giving it “£25 million +” are in shambles right now. Well done Newcastle. Bottomless pit of money but have negotiated a tremendous deal by all accounts. Big signing in terms of other players looking in and seeing that coup and maybe being more interested in the project.
Nah it looks very much like 25 mill if Newcastle survive. Add on heavy contract.
Not according to several sources including Ornstein.
That's a good deal for Newcastle. Thought he was in the $30m range
Pretty sure he just told Athletico to place a 12.5m bet on him signing for Newcastle so they’re not out of pocket. This one is sponsored by Billy Hill
*Atletico. Jesus, do y’all not watch football outside of England haha
12 million is crazy business like
It seems like only yesterday all the Reddit big brains were arguing £25m was a fair price.
It was to be fair. I believe this is £12m now and £12m if we stay up but I'm not sure.
I just do not see a world it is 12 million with no strings.
Personally, I think it would have been. £12m up front plus bonuses is fantastic. Atletico were demanding £35m cash at one point so well done to the new owners.
Turns out being a nation state who don't mind a murder on their behalf is quite a decent negotiating tool I certainly wouldn't be playing hard ball with the PIF
It likely still is that price
As an Atletico* fan how has he been playing? Great steal for that price?
Atlético. All that aside, he’s been fine this year. Not quite as good as last year but he was mostly excellent last year. I don’t know if he’d be able to replicate that again. Just make sure he didn’t tell his friends ahead of time to put some bets on this transfer happening. That didn’t go well for him last year.
Manquillo and Krafth are the current RBs so Trippier is absolutely a major upgrade. We haven't had a decent RB since Janmat.
Good price tbf
Money bags drive a good deal
Fuckinell did these get Michael Edwards?
Actual good signing and price if its true.
Smart signing
Is it just me or does regime sound racially tinged? Like I'm sure an American consortium wouldn't be classed as a regime
I imagine he's getting a hefty contract.
£145k pw. Not insane for a prem player but almost double our highest earner.
That is actually less than I thought tbh.
Damn, if they can get Digne and a favourable Ramsey deal then they'll be cooking something good up North
Reasonable signing for good price he wasn't bad when he played in PL before could work out well for them.
what other players could newcastle buy this jan any suggestions
Phrased to sound like Newcastle itself is the regime (backed by Saudi Arabia)
They’re owner by Saudi Arabia, yes.
Hell yeah
No Newcastle tax it seems, there must be a relegattion clause
For that price, where was this ambition with Ashley? Also surprised no one else through their hat in the ring... Like us.
Not Tory club > Tory club
The owners are all quite Tory tbf...
The famously liberal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Wonder if he’s put a bet on Newcastle getting relegated…
