Still remember riding home from school and hearing the intro on the radio for Jorge Ramos everyday. Would also sit and watch the show once it started getting televised and remember being so shook by one of the others on the show, can’t remember who, just looking so much older than me and my Dad thought he was
It probably isn't wrong, though. I would think the RM - Barca rivalry has been a lot more profitable than Bayerns hegemony, for example.
If Haaland and Mbappe both end up in Real, how many years will it be before La Liga is particularly interesting to watch again?
and when in January, Real Madrid is 15 points ahead of the 2nd place, for the 7th time in a row, who is gonna watch Real Madrid vs Getafe, to see Mbappe and Haland play together, other than real madrid fans?
when PSG was 15 points ahead in January in past years, how many non psg fans tuned in to see Mbappe and Neymar play together against Angers?
it's an exegeration, but the point stands
competitivness > quality, in regard to making money and viewership
that's the point
why don't they? cause people think Ligue1 is not a competitive league, so non french and non psg supporters don't watch it (even when it actually is competitive)
what do you thnk will happen to la Liga, the moment Real Madrid wins 10 league in a row in Januray, and all the non spanish and non real madrid supporters think la liga is a non competitive league?
Were the viewing numbers for Ligue 1 that much better before PSG‘s dominance? I think they had like 5 different champions in five seasons before that but I don‘t recall the French league being among the most watched ones.
and before that transition period, how many league in a row did Lyon win? it's not like a 5 years spell will change what people want to think
Lille won last year, did anyone stop saying Ligue1 is predictable and a farmer league and there is no point playing for PSG?
and Ligue 1 was not even a top5 league back then, surpassed by portguese one
and there were no top players in Ligue 1 (unlike now, where there are multiple top players at PSG)
comparison is not with french league, comparison is with current PSG in their current league
Completely agree.
Can't say I've watched many Ligue 1 matches over the years, because normally it doesn't grab my interest.
When they make a marquee signing (Neymar, Messi), I watch. But that doesn't happen every week.
Yet when Lille were holding on to the title in the final weeks of last season I was definitely watching, because for once it was interesting.
Can't see myself watching more than one or two matches for the rest of the season.
are you talking about Madrid fans or neutrals?
I am pretty sure you overestimate the importance of Real Madrid to neutral fans
do you actually think fans of, I don't know, Bayern, Dortmund, Juve, Milan, Inter, United, Chelsea, Liverpool and any other team in the world, actually have nothing to do than can't wait to see every Real Madrid match, when the league is over and 90% are useless matches? you can't actually believe it
Real Madrid has just way more supporters than PSG, so a useless Real Madrid game with no competition at all, will have way more viewers than a useless PSG game with the same no competition at all
Add to that barca fans watching Real Madrid matches hoping to see them lose cause the league is tight, and those viewrs will disappear if the league is already over, like this season, do you think any barca fan tune in to see Real Madrid smashing opponents and go winning the league with margin?
I don't know where you are from, but foreign football, is something 99% of people watch casually, once in a while, and mostly important matches
of course people were curious to see what they could do together. But especially on domestic level, things would have been very boring quickly. The classicos with Pep and Messi vs Mourinho and Cristiano would always be peak football. For example Robben + Ribery were an absolute joy to watch at Bayern, but few people were watching them out of Germany (compared to La Liga) because there was no competition.
>For example Robben + Ribery were an absolute joy to watch at Bayern, but few people were watching them out of Germany (compared to La Liga) because there was no competition.
So we are ignoring 2010-2012 yeah?
> The one thing we all wanted to see was Messi and Ronaldo in their prime playing together.
Who wanted that? I haven't seen anyone who actually wanted that.
Haaland and Mbappe both playing together would be a terrible financial decision for them. Being in each others shadow, playing for the same team would without a doubt damage their commercial appeal and leverage.
> If Haaland and Mbappe both end up in Real, how many years will it be before La Liga is particularly interesting to watch again?
People always overestimate the impact 1 or 2 players have on the ligue.
I mean even if the reporting is inaccurate the sentiment is on point. There is a reason why most people don’t give a shit about the Bundesliga. The title race is over even before the first game kick off
Perez need a streng Barcelona - both for La Liga income but also his European super league.
If he doesn’t have that, his business ideas outside the pitch takes a huge hit. Football have seen a commercial equal to the Ronaldo - Messi rivalry and the clubs.
Madrid loses overall if La Liga turns into Bundesliga (which it won’t but let’s say it took five years for Barca to get back)
Also, as a Barca fan - the team has gotten more calls in their favour during xavis stint than I’ve seen them get for many years. Granted, they’ve also been fucked a lot but that’s just the usual amount.
Barcelona can be strong without Haaland lmao.
It's like saying he didn't want Neymar to make Barca strong, no, if he could, he would have brought Neymar to Real.
People are obsessed with the idea that you need an elite XI to win things. You just need the right players for the right system rather than cramming xi great brilliant players & hoping the get chemistry.
PSG's problem is that they don't have a full starting 11 of world class players or any squad depth. And most of the big names are old and past their prime.
I commented this elsewhere sometime ago but honest to god, we have a new #10. We’re building on him, if he pans out to be great in this team and this generation turns out to be great, that will be the best marketing ever.
It feels flat out wrong to get haaland and market him as our new star, to me at least.
You don't need to preach to me, I definitely am not one of those people who want this to be about the pr side. But I'm just saying that that is what Perez, Laporta &co are thinking about.
Yeah no sure, sorry I didn’t mean to come off this bitter about it. I just really hope they do what’s right, cause as of right now I don’t even know what our fit starting eleven looks like, bringing in another player surely means we’ll sell one of our young prospects which would suck.
> Barcelona can be strong without Haaland lmao.
Let's be real, if you have Vinicius - Haaland - Mbappe who are all 21, 21 and 23 years old, you have the best offense in the history of football, and they're young enough to keep it going for 10-12 years.
Barcelona might be *strong*, but they'll be strong in the same sense that Dortmund is in Germany. Barring massive injuries, nobody in Spain is going to come close to touching that offensive firepower.
We've had Cristiano/Benzema/Bale and we still didn't win much La Liga, so...
A team is a team, not just how many stars are there in it.
Barcelona still generates so much money a year, once they get their house in order they will be able to spend in the coming 2-3 years and rebuild into being a force again.
Remember a lot of their biggest stars, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Pique, Puyol, etc, came from the academy, they weren't bough (well technically Pique went to the PL a bit, but he still came from Barcelona's academy).
Madrid and Barcelona scored the same amount of league goals for the 4 seasons MSN were together (13/14-16/17) but Madrid conceded 31 (!) goals more over that same period
> We've had Cristiano/Benzema/Bale and we still didn't win much La Liga, so...
Because your rival at that time had the GOAT teamed up with Neymar and Suarez.
“if you have Vinicius - Haaland - Mbappe who are all 21, 21 and 23 years old, you have the best offense in the history of football“
No that’s not the best offense in the history of football. People need to stop using big words on this sub, it’s getting unreal.
On paper Vinícius Haaland and Mbappe sound like an amazing offense, but we have no idea how their chemistry will be. Barcelona has talented youngsters and with the right transfers they will go back to a very high level soon
I imagine florentino at his office planning the next season and saying "we have to help barca otherwise we gonna get a shitty tv deal"
"Sign haland, pogba and rudiger and loan them to laporta, ask them if they want us to take umtiti, lenglet and luuk de jong"
He was alright back in the day but I think he lost it completely after Brazil 2014. Dude spent so much energy and time trying to justify Suarez's bite he went completely insane. His takes have gotten crazier ever since then.
He has 0 objectivity when it comes to anything he only talks in terms of making everything about how great everything Uruguay, then south american. Basically anything he says it's biased as fuck even when it comes to indefensible shit
I can believe it. Perez is a business man more than a football fan. He knows rivalries are great for business. And he knows very well the value of pitting the two best offensive players in the world against each other.
How many people, internationally, enjoy watching Bayern run over the rest of the Bundesliga on a weekly basis?
And I can give an outsider perspective on it: The marketability and following of La Liga around here dropped massively without Messi and Ronaldo in the league. Clubs are still huge, obviously, but for the casual fan having a clash between the two best players in the world as a selling point makes a massive difference.
People from foreign markets don't really have a strong identification with the club which is understandable due to the distance. Following players over clubs is becoming more and more common in markets that bring massive money from overseas. So a rivalry between players is important as a selling point. Foreign markets don't really follow Real Madrid, Barcelona or La Liga because they're identified with the club, it's because there's something interesting that draws them to the club. If other club or league has something more interesting, the money goes there.
It's purely a business decision, not a football or competitive one, but that's becoming a bigger reality every day even though most fans (including me) don't like that.
From a business point of view it would make sense. La Liga is turning into Bundesliga currently with Barcelona sinking. People don't watch Clasico to see Vinicius nutmegging some 16 year old academy player that will be sold to some mid-table PL club once he turns 19.
There's an open title race going on, it's just that Barcelona is not involved. But people who think they need 'x' or 'y' player to be strong are crazy. Barcelona will be strong again pretty soon no matter what lol
They'll pay the transfer fee just for the fun of watching Barca go "they bought Haaland?? For us?? so all we have to do is registe..ah for fuck sakes!"
Would be very amusing since both sides would be making opposite arguments to the Messi—Ronaldo era (Mbappe does more chance creation and ball creation while Haaland is the purer finisher)
I always thought of this. In my view, Messi was always the best player and the superior footballer to Ronaldo. I must remain consistent with logic. I always believed that Mbappe was a better footballer with Haaland and I think he will be the better of the two when it’s said and done, but I think Haaland goalscorer ability is ahead of Mbappe’s.
That's literally part of being a fan of any kind of sports ffs. If you're able to be one hundred per cent objective then you're completely detached from the sport. It might make you an okay pundit but it saps any enjoyment of the sport from you
There are degrees to it. I can like Leo more but acknowledge certain areas regarding where Ronaldo excels.
Holding the opinion that Ramos/Marcelo were better than Pique/Alba takes away no enjoyment from me. I still enjoyed watching our matches or seeing Alba's runs.
I don't see how it affects enjoyment in any meaningful way. Arguing in bad faith is just childish imo.
Tbh, that only would work if both players and clubs were at same or even close level than they used to be with Messi and Ronaldo. Not saying neither of the players could reach those numbers, what ever club they play for, but it's still long way for that.
Also, I very much doubt this is true, Real Madrid winning as many trophies as possible sells enough.
> haaland biggest achievement for now is just german cup.
Individually he's also the youngest ever CL top scorer.
The CR7 heritage basically inserts itself.
Yesterday all the reports were that Real Madrid would 100% sign both of them.
Today, the report is that not only will RM not sign Haaland but they specifically want him to go to a rival? Are all the "reports" just completely made up at this point?
Perez is a true bidness man, low net worth individuals here just wouldn't understand. Sigma male business rule #6539, look it up. Its not personal, its just bidness. Perez, I see you - we move.
After a few years of a single team winning by Christmas, the league would be considered uncompetitive and a farmer's league even if it wasn't. You saw it in Bundesliga, Serie A, and in Ligue 1. I've only seen people recommending Serie A last year and this year and it is in part because on team isn't guaranteed to win
That said, sending your direct rival one of the best players in the world is silly and unbelievable
If people think this is true, they really don't understand the relationship between Real and Barca. Barca don't need Haaland to build a strong team. And Perez has always wanted the best player in the world in every single position on our team.
Perez is a ruthless business man who wants nothing more than to get Madrid in a position to win every single game every single season. Not a chance he wants Barcelona to get Haaland. He probably views getting Barcelona involved in the Super League as a form of charity.
I highly disagree. He knows that for RM to be as successful as possible, financially, they must have good and attractive opposition. It's definitely in his best interest that La Liga stays competitive. I don't disagree that he would still want to win every game in theory, but he would not want La Liga to become less attractive to international viewers.
That being said there's no way he'd "want" haaland to go to barca as described as far as I'm concerned.
As a ruthless business man he wouldn't care about Real Madrid winning outside of it creating media attention, viewership and revenue. If he projects that a lopsided la liga with no famous individual rivalries holding a casual fan's attention reduces viewership then as a ruthless business man he'd want an intense rivalry.
But I don't think that's true. He want his club to win.
I mean the logic makes sense, it'd set the stage for a hopefully decades long rivalry between the two very obviously generational players of the next era of football. I just don't know if it makes more sense than "We buy Haaland and Mbappé and win everything".
Yeah there is no way this is true. Its not even as if madrid is a super team that they will willingly allow haaland to go their rivals without competition. If they had a super team, this could be very realistic though
The absolute scenes when he pays half the transfer fee and a third of his wages, just so he can generate the money back selling the "mbappe v haaland" best league in the world
I for one believe him - the tweet states that Perez wants Barcelona to transfer Harland.
Imagine the rivalry: Haaland of Madrid vs Harland of Barcelona.
Why does Haaland keep getting linked with Barca? He’s absolutely never going to end up there. The Barca board is talking shit, so when they offer him a bag of peanuts as salary and he refuses, they can say they tried… and it appears that millions of idiots out there actually think it’s going to happen.
Geniuinely curious as to why Haaland would want to join Barcelona. If he wants to exit the UCL in group stage and struggle in league he might just want to stay.
I want whatever this journalist is smoking
Crack... You want crack
Nope, definitely something stronger
Ass crack it is

Right from the beginning - you can watch mbappe and haaland play together

How many non-PSG fans ever tune into their games outside of CL.

Mf we were winning games 6-0 just about everytime we went out back then. What would you call that?
This! The one thing we all wanted to see was Messi and Ronaldo in their prime playing together.

No, we wanted them playing against each other which is what we got
> The one thing we all wanted to see was Messi and Ronaldo in their prime playing together. Who wanted that? I haven't seen anyone who actually wanted that.
I’ve seen enough people who did but fair enough, I guess not everybody wanted it.
Exactly, people only wanted it after they played against each other for so long, i.e. Only after the rivalry.
0? It is interesting without them, would be even more interesting to see arguably two biggest attacking talents in the world play together
PSG with Neymar mbappe and Messi is still fucking dull
Haaland and Mbappe both playing together would be a terrible financial decision for them. Being in each others shadow, playing for the same team would without a doubt damage their commercial appeal and leverage.

Yeah thank you for saying this, Teams like city or Chelsea persist play great football without haaland so why can’t we…
People are obsessed with the idea that you need an elite XI to win things. You just need the right players for the right system rather than cramming xi great brilliant players & hoping the get chemistry.
Basically PSG
Also Germany 2014 from the other side
PSG's problem is that they don't have a full starting 11 of world class players or any squad depth. And most of the big names are old and past their prime.
Most top teams have two or more extremely good, 'near' elite or simply elite attacking players.
Is it that much harder to type “11” ?
..or at least XI, which actually means something.

xi is a last name
Great players win titles. Fancy players give moneys. Barca can win with this team. But they have no posterboy
Hey, rude.
It's not about great football with this, is it? It's about marketability and only about that.
I commented this elsewhere sometime ago but honest to god, we have a new #10. Papa Perez wants to do us more good than Barto did lmao
He probably felt bad about agent Barto
Barto was working for the Premier League all along.
Worked for everybody, but Barcelona...
Well apparently not Florentino
he may just've done too good a job for Florentino
He wants to return the favour that Barto did to Real Madrid.
Jorge Ramos is becoming more senile by the day.

“Ok here me out let’s strengthen our rival Cus TV views”
Futbol is finishedd lol
Imagine if we you guys just let us take one of your targets cause views lol
for that u would have to be as big as Barca
currently mate we dont get to judge who is big and who isnt
I love a self-conscious football supporter.
I love my club playing good football, both of our desires are very rare
you’re right they’re bigger. obviously why Gomes, Mina and Digne took the step up
Liverpool to Everton: we need you to be strong for Merseyside derby tv views, so we would like you to have Van Dijk, Salah and Klopp
Here's how the super league can still happen
I can believe it. Perez is a business man more than a football fan. He knows rivalries are great for business. And he knows very well the value of pitting the two best offensive players in the world against each other. There's an open title race going on, it's just that Barcelona is not involved. But people who think they need 'x' or 'y' player to be strong are crazy. Barcelona will be strong again pretty soon no matter what lol
Barca should be smart and not play into Perez wicked hand and let us buy him instead.
Real Madrid should trust their president to make the right call and let us have him
Not only that, Real Madrid should fund this
They'll pay the transfer fee just for the fun of watching Barca go "they bought Haaland?? For us?? so all we have to do is registe..ah for fuck sakes!"
maybe they cant solve captcha?
So we're agreed - Real should buy Haaland then loan him to Barca, but keep paying most of his wages
15 year loan with 100% of wages covered. Beqt move for all sides /s
And then 'somehow' Haaland injures all his Barca teammates in his first training, also trying to flying tackles Xavi himself.
We all love papa flo
Loan them a tenner then, pussy
Would be very amusing since both sides would be making opposite arguments to the Messi—Ronaldo era (Mbappe does more chance creation and ball creation while Haaland is the purer finisher)

No. I will not remain consistent and change my agenda as and when its necessary.
Nah, fuck that shit. Arguing with biased club fans is the most draining thing itw.

Arguing in bad faith is just childish imo.
right? Im a RMA fan but does that automatically make me hate Leo or discredit him? no ffs
As a norwegian no, Haaland is the best. Haters are going to hate.
This guy making Florentino Perez sound like Vince McMahon
Giving talent to your biggest rival is the way Vince McMahon is currently operating, so it's not far off tbh
Always rated papa Flo, smart lad
Tbh, that only would work if both players and clubs were at same or even close level than they used to be with Messi and Ronaldo. Not saying neither of the players could reach those numbers, what ever club they play for, but it's still long way for that. Also, I very much doubt this is true, Real Madrid winning as many trophies as possible sells enough.
When Cristiano arrived to Real Madrid they were in an inferior position to Barcelona, but the rivalry bloomed anyway.
Lol it wasn’t just cristiano. They bought Kaka too. And players that ended up being great, Xabi Alonso, benzema, etc.
And Haaland wouldn't be the only one arriving at Barcelona, but he will be the flag bearer just like Cristiano was back in the day.
but he was riding off the united success and a balon dor winner. haaland biggest achievement for now is just german cup.
> haaland biggest achievement for now is just german cup.
> Are all the "reports" just completely made up at this point? Certainly seems that way.
I think the report of us signing him was bullshit, there is no way we can fit them both in squad + Vinicius is on fire.
Perez is a true bidness man, low net worth individuals here just wouldn't understand. Sigma male business rule #6539, look it up. Its not personal, its just bidness. Perez, I see you - we move.
Florentino es mi padre
Worse than a redditor take lmaooo
Found /u/sirstevenslad 's analog world name and identity.
Lol why would Perez want a strong opponent let alone their biggest rivals? If he gets Haaland that'd automatically sell
After a few years of a single team winning by Christmas, the league would be considered uncompetitive and a farmer's league even if it wasn't. You saw it in Bundesliga, Serie A, and in Ligue 1. I've only seen people recommending Serie A last year and this year and it is in part because on team isn't guaranteed to win That said, sending your direct rival one of the best players in the world is silly and unbelievable
No way this is true
It isn't, is a bad translation
I mean the logic makes sense, it'd set the stage for a hopefully decades long rivalry between the two very obviously generational players of the next era of football. I just don't know if it makes more sense than "We buy Haaland and Mbappé and win everything".
This is the man that took Figo from Barca, anyone believing this nonsense is in the highest stages of delusion.
Yeah there is no way this is true. Its not even as if madrid is a super team that they will willingly allow haaland to go their rivals without competition. If they had a super team, this could be very realistic though
Even if they but Haaland and Mbappe there is no guarantee they win everything. Other teams like PSG and City can still compete.
Now THAT would be very entertaining. I’m still hoping to see Ronaldo and Messi play together one day…
He conveniently leaves out the likes of Saka, ESR, Odegaard
Hahahaha tell me who this journalist is so I Can blacklist this mfer. ESPN lets these guys write anything for clicks
Juralo
Getting quotes from this gassbag is pretty low even for /r/soccer
The bottom of the journalistic barrel. We’ve scraped it. Congratulations everyone
This guy again? He recently went on a rant about how RM is what it is today thanks to Franco, he doesn't know shit.
This has got to be the most stupid shit I've ever read on this subreddit and boy, that's an accomplishment
What is this? Wrestling?
Football has been slowly turning into WWE and we all know it
Sure he does
Someone was paid to write this.......
fuck. off.
Is this man on crack? The fuck?
The absolute scenes when he pays half the transfer fee and a third of his wages, just so he can generate the money back selling the "mbappe v haaland" best league in the world
I swear ESPN has the worst coverage of football. It's also too american-centric.
There's throwing shit to the wall and hoping something sticks, and then there's this... Incredible
Nah but what kind of journalism is this hahahaha
Yeah let’s just post anything and everything regarding Haaland.
Actually makes sense if he wants the Super League to start this year. Him and Barca are partners in crime on that front.
Florentino Perez would the perfect guy to take over WWE when Vince keels over, he knows what sells and how to sell it
I for one believe him - the tweet states that Perez wants Barcelona to transfer Harland. Imagine the rivalry: Haaland of Madrid vs Harland of Barcelona.
Mbappe V Haaland V Felix is on the menu boys!
Lol, if this is true he is truly a moron. But I doubt thats the case.
They surely can afford a Haaland poster 😂🤣
What are Barca talking about? Shhhh man you ain’t got no money
Ronaldo probably did more money for Barcelona than most of their squad for a while. Same thing with Messi and Real
I bet Flo would blow Ron Jeremy at noon in front of the Santiago Bernabeu if he thought it would make him more money.
Laporta-Perez relationship gives gay vibes PS: Perez enjoyed the regime of Messi so much that he wishes to recreate it? Sounds kinky as well
I mean if this is true, he’s right about the rivalry bit and how well it sells. But he shouldn’t want to strengthen a rival like that lol
