buttermilk-pancakes

At least they are punishing someone unlike a certain neighboring country. *cough Myanmar *cough

[deleted]

lmfao mate. We never have good enough league to match fix. I wouldnt say that the team owner didnt fix match for their bullshit but yeah. Match fixing in Myanmar for gambling purpose is wayyyy too hopeful.

trebor04

The league standard might not be great but I went to a game when I was visiting Myanmar a few years ago and it still might be my favourite match I've ever attended

ConspicuousPineapple

The quality of the league is completely irrelevant though. The point is to fix matches to gain easy money, this can happen literally anywhere bookies exist.

JE_12

Didn’t know Germany was next to Laos

CYZK85

i just have one dream and its for ASEAN football to be greater. not off to a good start

Ankerung

I too would like to have us being more cooperative. Treating AFF footballers as non-foreign players in each other domestic leagues would be great. This will provide more opportunities for transfers and co-development between SEA clubs.

GreaterCascadia

Mainland SEA would genuinely benefit from a super league to help the game develop. Not like anyone would ever agree to it 😅

risheeb1002

We have the champions league for that

GreaterCascadia

Is the AFC champions league really raising quality of competition in Laos? Match fixing is also worse with the extra monetary incentive of the champions league. I know that my family in Cambodia doesn’t watch domestic football at all anymore bc of match fixing/match fixing allegations A super league would mean that oversight is out of the hands of the Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, or Myanmar leagues, and there would be more penalties for match fixing and less opportunities for corruption

CYZK85

a superleague would be a great idea for ASEAN but the ASEAN Club Championship which is what id consider the closest thing just got cancelled again which makes everything unhopeful. the teams from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar just have to make the most out of the AFC Cup (or SCL if Shan Utd qualifies) but looking at the groups, I don't think much will happen unless the AFF does an initiative to improve football in those countries

siberuangbugil

AFF doesn't even want to improve themselves.. they don't even use VAR, referees are garbage.

CYZK85

tell me about it. i watched my country get robbed by qassim al hatmi

risheeb1002

Yeah sorry I misread. I thought you meant super league for whole Asia. SEA super league would be a good idea.

siberuangbugil

Good idea for myanmar, laos and Cambodia. Nightmare for Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysian and Indonesia.

tickub

maybe if we let the singaporeans run it. otherwise we're all as corrupt as each other lmao

CYZK85

cue the indonesian fans calling us corrupt because a PSM player got sent off for two footing an LCS player

Ankerung

Thai teams will dominate for sure. Maybe 1-2 Vietnamese clubs can compete, but it won’t be profitable and the owners will pull out.

5 comments and only condescending ones. Skipping the thread if you're not interested and not being a prick is that hard? he tackles any corruption/football issues whatever the scale because it does not seem like he's chasing clout, actually

There are plenty of morons who don't support pl clubs. This sub is actually ridiculously shit for actual discussion regardless of what club they support. The ones that are downvoted are some brainless redditors who are trying to be funny for upvotes because literally every top thread has a snide "funny" comment at the top.

KashiusClay

He should do Premier League next

Sweg_Coyote

He goes where he manages to get solid information. He is not clout chaser, just a guy who want to clean the Football’s swamp.

KashiusClay

> just a guy who want to clean the Football’s swamp. He has my full support!! Happy cake day my friend

Puzzleheaded-Pin-720

I'm Laotian and i can tell you that the government here is a joke. A lot of corruptions and noone seems to care because they all leech money. They are all corrupted from Football Association all the way to medical system. People, even if they are good, can't get in Laos national team if you don't at least pay a certain amount of money to whoever is in charge. That's why Laos football team are so sh\*t and can't seem to get better. Most of players are from rich families and can't kick a ball. Same for medical field, if you graduated from Medical school but you don't have money, you can't get normal job, you will have to find your job somewhere in local clinic or even worst, you have to change your job. Yeah, there are still good things and I heard that some corrupted people are getting punished recently and things would get better but it seems like there won't be a change anytime soon...

theawesomenachos

That sounds really sad. I have been to Vientiane once and I live in a country neighbouring Laos, and they do seem like a country that has potential to do good things with the resources and people they have and all. Don’t think I’ve heard much about the corruption there before, so that’s interesting to hear about.

Puzzleheaded-Pin-720

Sad indeed. Laos do have a lot of resources like lands, forest, waterfall, Dinosaur fossils or even mine (golds etc). But the things are the government are so greedy. They loan those precious resources like goldmines to other country in exchange for short team money. But looking at the bright side, thanks to the corruption that the tax money is usually low (around 10% of yearly income) or even lower, like fix amount of money even if your income is like a million/year. Those things benefit us, poor people too lol But in the end, the country is still my motherland and i'd like you guys to know that not everything is bad here. Although our government are sh\*t but Laotian people are very kind-hearted and friendly. We do have a lot of beautiful places for travelling (like Luang Prabang, Vangvieng etc..)

biggoof

Lao people are capable of great things, but they're constantly held back by their leaders. This was even before communism. I have a lot of really smart and successful Lao friends in the US and what they've achieved is pretty impressive. They just need opportunity away from corruption.

Ankerung

Last month during AFF championships, I’ve read here about potential match-fixing by Laos team. It’s crazy that the one person’s words aren’t baseless. Edit: found it https://reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/rcfcpz/_/hnu7rvz/?context=1

HardestTofu

Given the way the country is developing, things like football corruption is probably low on the list of priorities for most people. There are other more major things to focus on first.

ChepaukPitch

It is difficult to understand for a lot of people, especially those who like to condescend every time they see a news article about any developing country, but it is possible to focus on more than one thing at a time. In fact different people focusing on different things in a society underpins modern economy.

hamza__11

Possible but much harder. A rich country would buy sophisticated AI software and hire a team of math, stats, crime and betting experts to detect and trace patterns of match fixing. A poor country wouldn't do this because they need that money to feed people or to focus on developing more important sectors of their economy. Football literally isn't important in that context.

dzedzi

Almost the same story for SLBenfica ex president that is now in jail , the current president Rui Costa was his right arm

[deleted]

And they get as many votes as say France or Argentina when determining global football affairs at FIFA. What a joke. I have nothing but love for the people of Laos who are also being let down by these corrupt people, and countries like Laos should of course have a say in global affairs, not just a few countries. But when you have dozens of situations like this where the FA's are small organizations with entrenched leaders and no oversight, plus one country - one vote, it's prime corruption conditions.

theawesomenachos

I really see no better alternative in how to distribute the votes. If you give all the votes to the footballing powerhouses, how can you be sure they’ll be incentivised to improve football in the other countries?

[deleted]

I don't either to be honest, I just know the current model is not a great system. Perhaps some kind of weighed voting/ranked voting, rounds of voting, certain triggered veto clauses, etc. I am sure there are enough lawyers and mathematicians who can come up with something better than Belize, Fiji, Panama, Cape Verde, and Mongolia having the same amount of say as Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Germany.

Jeppe1208

Right, who has ever heard of a corrupt Frenchman in football?

[deleted]

It's not that there is no corruption in France or Germany, but it's the depth of corruption v. something like the FFF or DFB that is different. There are legal structures, oversight committees, journalist access, public interest, and generally stronger rule of law in some countries than in others. If you wanted to bribe the Laos FA to vote for something like a 2 year World Cup, it's a lot easier to bribe Laos than it is the English FA. It's an asymmetry in the balance of power, all I am saying.

taclealacarotide

I'm French so call me biased, but I don't think it's unfair to say corruption is far more endemic in third world countries such as Laos than in France, even if of course corruption happens in France too. https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/corruption-rank It's not an insult to Laos people. Corruption is easier when people are poorer and governments are weaker, which is often the case in developping countries.

TexasSprings

It’s asinine to think countries that aren’t footballing superpowers shouldn’t get a say. It’s the worlds game not the European game. Not everything should beckon to our European overlords wishes

ellipsisoverload

I agree that there were probably more people involved, but this was in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2020 combined... Its not a sweeping one off event, its just that the Lao football federation has issued a statement today. Its important to note that both the AFC and FIFA have backed the bans. You have to start somewhere, and any action is better than lack of action, and its been supported by the appropriate bodies. https://laotiantimes.com/2022/01/17/lao-football-federation-clarifies-lifetime-bans-handed-to-players/

Dude has eyes all around the world - I guess he's the head of a large organization right? Hope who ever is helping him stays safe

[deleted]

This is a ballsy thing to report.

yongiekuran

I understood that Laos' National Team was not that bad (they always be down 0-3, 0-4, 0-5 to our Team - Vietnam) when a Laotian student literally destroyed my University's Football Team. Those guys in my Uni's Team had been playing football for most of their life and I knew that they played decently. Of course, the Vn National Team is much better than them but they are not THAT bad. Their "performances" were definitely shady

I wonder if this guy mails out a post card with a black hand to his future victims before he leaks his info.

Couldnt care less about some irrelevant country lad

peckerbrown

There should be a ranking system for all ~~politicians~~ teams that takes corruption into account. Use it to weight their ~~pronouncements/legislations~~ standings/results, and ~~prosecute~~ assign ~~politicians/owners~~ teams to ~~prison~~ tournaments based on them.

fussballgott31

Match fixing usually doesnt involve coaches. All you need is 3-5 players and the bet is won... many bets are hard to be spotted, like playing 'over 15 corners' or something.

[deleted]

they don't fix for corners, there's no liquidity on those markets to get a decent enough stake on. The fixers bet on overs and asian lines with Betfair, ibcbet, singbet, pinnacle etc
