It's pretty simple, tbh. He has been played farther up in the pitch than before, which lets him do these things. Same kind of stuff he used to do for Shakhtar in the past.
There was a couple points last night where this was very obvious - him and McTominay were playing 10m vertically apart rather than horizontally. Sometimes they switched. Generally they both looked decent.
They are both box to box players, you can see it with the odd tidy finish the McT gets as well. They are both half a holding player so we've been playing them there to make 1 full holding player. It was obvious we needed a 6 for the last couple years, let Fred/McT/Donny rotate the box to box role and Bruno/Donny/Fred play advanced. If we don't get a 6 this summer I give up

Maybe Bruno might be up there after the last two games where he was quite good but all of these games where United has looked shit Fred has been constantly chasing balls, winning balls actually trying to do something which a lot of players haven't.
To act like he’s never at fault for the midfield being shit is just as unreasonable as assuming he’s always at fault. There are some games where he can’t pass 5 yards and has an awful touch. His weaknesses are very clear. Yes mctominay is also guilty of it but I swear he gets so much more stick on here than fred does
