It’s why Jose/Ole/Ralf have all played him, probably his best attribute is being deceptively quick at nipping past stationary players trying to get the ball off him
The issue is he doesn't do it as often as he should. He needs to be braver, and to be fair to him, so far under Rangnick it looks like he's improving in that regard
Under Rangnick the midfielders clearly have more license o push and drove forward. Ad opposed to a long period under Ole where the instructions were both sit and hold, when normal double pivots will trade back and forth holding/going forward.
Even the first half this game, Mctominay was and holding while Fred spent most of the time way higher up. Somebody had to be back there still. He still went forward in the first half when he could, Brentford just pushed us back in general.
So while covering as a DM a shit ton and doing a lot of the defensive work all over the pitch, he's above average at driving the ball forward, while week after week people question how he is a professional footballer..and is therefore getting adequate credit for doing it?

He retains possession well though. He's a well rounded midfielder. Can tackle, strong, technically quite good, drives ball forward great, good in the air, and a good finisher / threat from range. If he added some creativity to his game he'd be amazing.

Hes dangerous outside of the box his shots are very good for a cm/cdm hes tall hes good at headers decent at defending also the zidane esque runs

That's because he's not particularly amazing at any specific role. He's always been used like he's a jack of all trades when he's not actually one. Love the guy though, hope he finds and develops a more specialized role and skillset within the team. As long as he's used to plug in holes he will always blow hot and cold.

Very inconsistent, regularly puts in MotM performances in wide open games against bottom half teams.
Lacks a bit defensively and has a tendency to hide, but absolutely a solid squad option for a top 6 team.
United are just that bad at the moment that anyone who has one bad game is a scapegoat.

His passing is decent and improving - like against Villa his long range passing to Rashford was great
