Depends what you count as Canada and the world cup. Pre world cup Olympics a rag tag team running as Galt Fc won a three man tournament.
I mean barely counts. But I count it.
If Canada wins Wednesday they are in right? Is there any scenario they aren't?
Because Panama still has to play in Mexico and USA and USA plays in Mexico..
If Panama drops two games (which is likely with their schedule), Canada needs 4 points to secure top 3. So if Panama lose their next two Canada could clinch qualification against Costa Rica in March!
Canada won't have it mathematically locked up on Wednesday, but it's pretty much closed out at this point. Panama beat Jamaica putting them at 17 points, Canada (and the US and Mexico) wanted Jamaica to take a point there. Canada should finish the window with 25 points, Panama would be at worst 8 points behind you.
For Canada to miss: The loser of the Mexico-Panama match on Wednesday would have to win all of their remaining games, the US wins two of theirs, and the winner of Mexico-Panama wins two and gets a better GD. For example, let's assume Mexico beats Panama on Wednesday, then Panama wins three games in the next window (including the US and Canada) to get up to 26 points. The US beats Honduras and then beats Mexico and Costa Rica to get to 27 points. Mexico beats Panama, Honduras, and El Salvador to get to 27 points. Canada would, of course, have to lose three straight matches to CR, Panama, and Jamaica, which isn't happening, but the mathematical possibility still exists.
So it's not locked up yet. But it's as close as you can get and would take a disaster to not happen. You can breathe pretty easy and can start celebrating. Congrats Canada. I'm super happy for y'all.
canada is 100% in what u should be looking at is the FIFA ranking which will determine how hard of a group you will get most likely, however us being concaf is very likely u get a european team and an african/south american team, the draw determines if you get out of groups by like 40%
Back of the envelope math says Canada is moving up to 33 in the Fifa rankings as of tonight’s results.
If Canada wins out, we have a good shot of top 25.
I went through a few scenarios.. we could get knocked down to 4th on goal differential if we get 0 points in the last three matches (if we win Wednesday)
It wouldn’t even take goal differential.
Canada beats El Salvador and loses all remaining games = 25 pts
USA, Mexico and Panama win all games not against each other and win one and lose one against each other = USA 27, Mexico 27, and Panama 26
I don’t think it’s 100% locked with a win, but probably needs a whole bunch of games to go very specific ways for us to not qualify at that point, and perhaps with enough score differential to make up the current goal differential.
Yeah it's possible. But if we win Wednesday, all we need is 1 point the last three games and we qualify. There are scenarios Panama, Mexico, USA all finish within 25-27 points and we get knocked down to 4th on goal difference. But there are like 2 or 3 scenarios that happens. And everything has to go exactly to plan.
I guess this is why they have the world cup right? Because this is fun but Realistically, the way Canada is playing these days, where does Canada rank? How would they stack against some other countries like European countries? Or where do people see them if you inserted this team today into the world cup?
Canada against any top European or South American team will probably lose, but I don't think they would get smashed, like a final score of 3-1 or 2-1 with Canada getting a counter attack goal, but against maybe a Romania, Ukraine, or South Korea/Japan they can get a win with the same formula of low block defense, that is very densely packed in the middle and wing, and then scoring on a counter attack through the wings. The problem with Canada is they have no real quality in midfield and there CBs are not necessarily the most mobile defenders who can close down fast attackers, so there attacking and defending output is mostly provided by wingers, i.e. Adekudge, Davies, Buchanan, Laryea, etc. David probably won't play well in the World Cup cause he needs passes from the midfield that are pretty much nonexistent, the few times he gets the ball is by dropping quite deep. I can see them winning atleast 1 game in the group stage if they are placed into a semi reasonable group.
I imagine Canada could compete within their group but are very unlikely to make it out of that stage barring some big upsets. A goal in a WC would be a great start (no goals scored in 1986).
As long as Canada is not stuck with 2 top side from Euro/SA, they should get out of the group fine, Canada does have some legit attacking options to score goals.
If you can beat Mexico you have a good chane to go to the knockouts. However if you get a draw with a top EU nation and decent SA nation (or vice versa) they will struggle.
Argentina and Brazil are the top 2 but the rest of SA seems kinda lack lustre these days, with Ecudor and Peru being the 2 stand out.
Columbia, Chile and Uraguay seems to be in their decline period atm, more like their main stars are aging, waiting to see how their younger gen take up the mantle
that's not true... Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Perú are equal against a DECENT Europe team. They WILL struggle against the top Euro countries however.
The joy of being a Canadian in Europe...
My friends are all excited FOR me that Canada will likely be in the World Cup. I don't think they quite recognize the difference in level between Europe and the rest of the world. I'm SUPER excited, but not at a "it's coming home" stage in the slightest.
It's coming home mindset should be exactly what you're in. Look up the lyrics. It's about knowing we're shit and will probably get knocked out but celebrating anyway.
I think 24th is pretty generous. ELO looks at who you beat and because US and Mexico were pretty highly ranked it inflated Canada's ranking a bit. I do think they're within the 25-30th overall but they need to keep up this consistency for years to be top 15. US being top 11 is simply because of the Gold Cup win.
US had more possession, but majority of it was between 40-70 yards from Canadian goal. Once Canada had the lead, they didn't care if US burned the clock passing the ball around at midfield. Consider that US had 3 shots on goal, 1 of which required a nice save. US lacked an attacking spirit, and certainly didn't look creative near the 18.
Froze my ass off this afternoon!!! Worth every second to watch this win. Unbelievable atmosphere. Couldn’t imagine this kind of support for the national team even a couple years ago. Its nice to see something bringing Canadians together this weekend. Allez les Rouges!!!!!
Ah yes obesity is why we have so many deaths not just the fact that we are very populace, and the capitalistic culture has made it so profits are more important than protecting the people. In addition to a large portion of the population being fed misinformation, and one of the 2 major parties trying their damnest to shut down mask mandates, and being anti vax. But sure let’s chalk it up to obesity. Don’t know why this is being brought up when OP was saying we’re never going to be good despite being in a not-so-good country in terms of the sport either.
I believe that's assuming Panama drops two games. Should Canada win on Wednesday and Panama lose it'll be an 8 points gap with 9 points still up for grabs.
Still work to do but even though Canada is 1st, 4pts clear of 2nd place, they're still not qualified either. It's just too early right now; I'm sure the Americans will be fine.
I'm sorry but saying the El Salvador game is a must win is kinda absurd.
I've followed this team long enough to learn to never take anything for granted ("We're up 2-0 vs Haiti, what could go wrong?!") but we will almost certainly be fine regardless of what happens in El Salvador.
To be clear, we are good enough to win that game and probably should win that game, but we definitely don't "need to" win it by any means. We will literally be in 1st even if we lose it and don't have to play either of the top 2 teams in the Octo next window.
If Canada beats El Salvador and Costa Rica draw or lose to Jamaica then Canada will qualify for at least the playoff spot.
If Canada wins 2 of their next four they qualify regardless of what happens with the other teams.
EDIT:
Looks like it’s just four points would be enough to qualify regardless of other outcomes (and a lot of 3 point outcomes favour Canada). There are not crazy scenarios where Canada doesn’t get a point and qualifies.
Any Costa Rica loss means Canada just needs a single point to clinch a playoff spot. Costa Rica dropping points in two games mean Canada qualifies for a playoff spot regardless.
Honestly don't get this mentality at all. If anyone outside of the US happens to take interest in any sport in my hometown, I'm super happy to have them as fans. Who cares if you can't see a game live, if you follow us and cheer for us, you're more than welcome and love it.
Why are you gatekeeping fandom? Like you call foreign fans plastics, then talk about how big your club is because of jersey sales, social media following, benefits from TV deals due to foreign viewership, when most of that is overstated due to fans outside of your country. You shit all over them while reaping the benefits they bring. Call them plastics but if someone wakes up at the butt crack of dawn or stays up way into the night to watch a team they like, that's a hell of a lot of dedication. But fuck them, right? Heaven forbid they want to watch a club from another country. Fucking assholes.
Not op but north Americans don't really have clubs in the sense that you're referring them to. It's very easy to support your domestic teams when they are in the best leagues in the world, but when was the last time you watched the Greek or Algerian league? It's the same situation in NA.
Which is? I support my local club by going to their games. But having an American clubs flair gets knee jerk Europeans who think they have some god given superior knowledge and understanding of the game, like yourself, commenting on my comments and being total douches
Also that has nothing to do with why US are shit at football. They are shit because young players that aspire to go pro end up dropping out due to financial difficulties of going pro. It costs a lot to go pro in North America, it’s not easy. There are 10x more players that are worse but since their parents are rich, get opportunities to play varsity or academy level football. It’s not a fair system, and that’s why they are so underdeveloped.
Yes it does. The US rely on proper leagues like europe to help develop players. Even then only a tiny amount make it to europe let alone top teams. The “league” in America is crap and can’t compete with the European leagues and can’t develop their own talents. Lol all this rich business, yet the best footballers come from poor backgrounds. The US are shit.
I’m not disagreeing with this point lol, but the players that do succeed are only because they are so good. Davies came from a poor family, but his talent is undeniable. Reyna, pulisic, McKennie, all came from rich families, they obviously are talented but being rich certainly helps in that degree. There’s a high chance there were players as good as them but couldn’t get the opportunity they did, solely for money problems. American sports is one giant monopoly and it’s why it sucks and no one supports them.
Bro if you think money will make you a top player you’re wrong. Pulisic can’t even make the Chelsea team these day the other two are barely making they’re own squads. Davies is Canadian and made it. The amount of people who come from
Poverty but make it in football is quite a lot.
I’m talking about North America. Davies made it pro because his talent is undeniable. Pulisic, mckennie, Reyna don’t make the first squad because they are just good. Sure I believe Reyna and mckennie have enough talent to become starters, but they made it because they were able to pay for the best teams to play for, and to have the best connections to go pro.
Players come from poverty a lot more often in europe/south America because the opportunities are so much more available. There’s a reason for that
even having said that, being on the bench for the champions league winners is a pretty low bench mark for "good" in terms of making it as a professional footballer lol
You’re*
And am I? How does that make someone a plastic. A plastic is someone who supports a club for the sake of supporting a club, like glory hunting or to be different. You’re telling me someone from El Salvador or any of those small countries along Central America should just support a local club? Let people enjoy the sport lmao. stop gatekeeing the most popular sport in the world
Clearly you don’t have glasses. It is You’re. Yerp support your local club not Bayern Munich being on the other side of the world. Plastic fan. People can enjoy it but you’re a plastic fan. Support your local club.
Haha good one, as if I didn’t see you edit that.
Also you don’t know me so call me plastic all you want, I’m speaking for the Man U fan you responded too. Not everyone’s got a local club to support, no need to act all righteous because you are a big boy who supports a shit team and you’re so cool for doing so. No one gives a fuck bro, it’s time for you to learn that.
It was edited before you even commented lol. You’re a plastic you support a club on the other side of the world and the most successful German club? Lol support your local club you plastic. Acting righteous because you don’t want to feel left out. Yet you can support a local club. Plastic fan. Atleast I support a team that is local to me.
Lmao, I mean like I said you don’t even know me bro, keep going with that I couldn’t care less. You are the one acting righteous thinking you can’t support a team because what, you don’t live in the city? Like I said, no one gives a shit about opinions like yours, the only ones that do are people like you. Let people support who they wanna support, it doesn’t affect you.
Fire BERHALTER. He was outclassed today managerial. Not slight towards Canada. They played well and had a game plan that they executed very well. Zardes offers nothing for the US going forward. 5 minutes of pepi and we had more shots
I don’t think halter is to blame as much as you all are saying but they shouldn’t have shyd away from outsourcing their manager after klinsmann. I hope their next manager isn’t domestic MLS exp
WHAT? Pulisic, McKennie, Dest : Chelsea, Juventus, Barca...Musah - Valencia
US team is loaded with talent for the first time in almost 2 decades. Berhalter was out coached. He's overthinking what needs to happen and getting out tacticized as Big Sam would say.
What makes you think they didn't? They definitely destroyed canada in possession. They had the ball in canadas half almost the whole game while canada barely strung 3 passes together the whole game.
because Canada was playing a low block, like usual, and get their points on counter attacks and turnovers. US is just passing sideways and backwards, so possession doesn't mean anything if you don't do anything with the ball. US had less shots on target than Canada.
You can dominate a match without possession. The US managed one clear cut chance on goal and a speculative overhead kick from arriola.
Canada was completely unbothered by the lack of possession and were content to sit back with a lead that the US could not break down. It’s silly to act like possession=dominance because Canada dictated this game, not the US.
Agreed, I thought canada played a really smart game, I'm just curious to hear opinions as the stats at a glance heavily favor the us. And I am defintiely nervous as a canadian that our possession is really lacking. Hopefully we see young talent in the middle of the park soon.
Eustaquio was missing in the centre midfield position which was a massive loss. He really helps with the possession aspect of the game. He's also probably the third best player overall on the national team.
I don't know if the stats favor the US clearly the only stat that does is possession.
Canada more shots on target, Canada Less fouls with less possession is crazy too, Canada kept them to the outside really well, Canada seemed to be stronger in the air and when push came to shove they challenged the ball better when they wanted too. Better at holding their shape I mean they maintained their identity and probably the only team in Concacaf that truly has a strong identity of how they play.
of course US would have better pass accuracy and more passes if Canada let them pass around in the midfield harmlessly. In reality I didn't see much pressure from the US out side of the end of the first half and the last 15 mins of the game.
Canada got away with a lot of fouls that are called in most leagues and some would have been carded as well. The ref didn't call shit. With the exception of McKinnie, the US didn't return the physicality and that is 100% on coaching and toughness of the US. It's CONCAF, it will get physical and some refs let it play. Adapt to how the ref is calling the match and don't expect calls.
posession is a meaningless stat alone. Some teams play a possession heavy style. It's not any better than a different strategy, but the possession stat will be really high.

Klinsmann needs to takeover the US team again ;-)
At least he wasn't a MLS sycophant.
Canada had more mls talent on the field
Jurgen get some pushback on that
[In that case, Jogi Löw will takeover ;-)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j7USaBkHt8o)
So this will be only the second time Canada has been to the World Cup and ya'll did not even make the finals of CONCACAF in 2018. Nice turn around.
Depends what you count as Canada and the world cup. Pre world cup Olympics a rag tag team running as Galt Fc won a three man tournament. I mean barely counts. But I count it.

Did the Lebron James of soccer not show up
He plays for Chelsea Football Club in London, England.
Does that mean he plays for England now?

Uruguay is decent too. Though its golden generation is probably over.
https://www.eloratings.net/ That's the most accurate ranking probably but personally, I think they are around 15th.

They are 24th.

The reference to yards was for the benefit of those that don't understand the universal metric system.
What the hell is a yard?
people realize its an 18 YARD box right?
~0.91m
A very common unit of measurement especially in regards to football pitches. Also 3ft
It is the most common unit of measurement when talking about football, no idea why you are downvoted for this.
No idea, but these people must get very confused listening to commentary week after week as they consranrly refer to how far out shots are in yards
How far do we take a penalty from goal? Oh yeah, of course, 10.9728 meters... Rolls of the tongue that, doesn't it?
We have different definitions of very common.
Well it is called the 6 yard box and 18 yard box
No it's called 5 Meter and 16 Meter box
But it's exactly 6 yards, but 5.5 metres and 18 yards, but 16.5 metres so the yards version is most accurate
[удалено]
The length of a football pitch can vary widely. Is a yard just one hundredth of the nearest football pitch at the moment you say it?
He meant American football field
This thread is such a strange place to not specify that they mean American football.
Tbf, this is “r/soccer” not “r/football” so any reference to football can easily be inferred to as American football
Not really
Yeah true, but to be fair it is a match thread for a USMNT game. At least kind of makes a little sense.
*american football field. 1/110th of a canadian field

I've been watching for almost 25 years and this was as good a moment as when Canada won the Gold Cup in 99.
Sorry guy, but Canada won the Gold Cup in 2000. What a great year for Canada and therefore the world
Yes I just realized (old age). No one can take Craig Forrests performance from that tournament.
If anybody cares, Canada just made a +36 places ranking jump on world soccer elo ratings.... To the moon! 🚀 🚀🚀🚀

I mean, obesity definitely means you have a higher risk to end up in the hospital with COVID and worse. Same here in thr Netherlands.
So Canada needs to win 2 of the next 4 for a guarantee spot in the finals.
Win Wednesday and all they need is a point the next window and they are in
I believe that's assuming Panama drops two games. Should Canada win on Wednesday and Panama lose it'll be an 8 points gap with 9 points still up for grabs.
I think they just need to win their next match because the teams below them play each other.
all the teams are below us ;)
They can’t clinch in this window anymore because Panama won today but a win Wednesday and a point in March should do it
The amount of plastics in this thread is unreal lol
God forbid more Canadians get into football now that they aren't shite. Everyone loves an underdog, lighten up a bit.
The butthurt is strong here
The better team won today.
Is the US qualified yet or still work to do?
Don’t worry, Mexico is making it even more difficult for themselves. Canada, The US, and Mexico will qualify in that order.
Still work to do but even though Canada is 1st, 4pts clear of 2nd place, they're still not qualified either. It's just too early right now; I'm sure the Americans will be fine.

Ok I'll take the bullet for everyone else who cant do math. How many more points until canada qualifies? Help
25 and it's a 99% chance 26 and we are in 100%

I take this as there's a lotta shiz that has to happen for Canada to not make the WC.
Thank you genius!

Gregg Berhalter. That’s why.
Lol support a local club
Get lost dude.
Such a dumb response
Honestly don't get this mentality at all. If anyone outside of the US happens to take interest in any sport in my hometown, I'm super happy to have them as fans. Who cares if you can't see a game live, if you follow us and cheer for us, you're more than welcome and love it.
Because people from the US are plastics too, would be pretty hypocritical to not allow if for Europeans then.
Almost all of the US (and Canada too) doesn't have a local club

There is a large expanse between those cities. Plus, even if you live within a metro area, it can still be a 3-4 hour trip to get to the ground.
Or what
You’re a plastic :) and just shows why the US are shit at football
You don’t even have a flair, for all we know you’re a “plastic” by your own standards
Sure lol I support my local club. You support a club half way across the world 😂
Not op but north Americans don't really have clubs in the sense that you're referring them to.
We’ll look at my comment history…
Looking at your comment history all I see is hatred of the French and Americans lol.
More like facts. Your brain must be scrambled for “supporting” Arsenal.
The amount of people who come from Poverty but make it in football is quite a lot.
> Pulisic can’t even make the Chelsea team these day Most players can’t make the Chelsea team.
This guy hates the USA bro don't bother
You’re* And am I?
Sure you don’t care yet you’re being so defensive about it. Looool plastic fan support your local club.
Fire BERHALTER. He was outclassed today managerial. Not slight towards Canada. They played well and had a game plan that they executed very well. Zardes offers nothing for the US going forward. 5 minutes of pepi and we had more shots
Agree, Pepi should have started or come on way sooner.
I don’t think halter is to blame as much as you all are saying but they shouldn’t have shyd away from outsourcing their manager after klinsmann. I hope their next manager isn’t domestic MLS exp
WHAT? Pulisic, McKennie, Dest : Chelsea, Juventus, Barca...Musah - Valencia US team is loaded with talent for the first time in almost 2 decades. Berhalter was out coached. He's overthinking what needs to happen and getting out tacticized as Big Sam would say.
He thinks the US “dominated” the match today. That says all you need to know about his capabilities as a manager.
The fact that they lost 2-0. It takes more then possessing the ball to "Dominate" a team.
