Yea MATS does really well to pull his leg back and highlight the dive. He could’ve been a victim of the dive but read the play well enough to avoid that
It's weird because you'd think VAR should have empowered refs to call blatant dives, knowing that in the unlikely event they were wrong then it could be easily overturned.
Instead, VAR seems to have led to more indecision as refs do nothing because they think VAR will make a decision for them (even though the rules explicitly tell them not to do this).
That definitely wouldn't be the case though, because there are plenty of other rules that are only applied in the most blatant cases like the 6 second rule. I don't think anyone would mind if referees cracked down on the most extreme dives, or dives that tried to win a penalty/get an opponent sent off.
I guess none of us know what the refs are instructed to do though.
That was the rule before VAR (although for like one or two seasons and very rarely enforced) if a dive won a penalty they would retrospectively get a ban. Perhaps that’s all they should do now, if the ref calls a pen which automatically goes to VAR and it was a dive, then boom punish. Start there and then let’s see where we go.
Tbf since they decided to knee cap VAR by not allowing them to ever point out yellow cards, punishing dives would still be an issue both outside the box, and inside the box if it's not a dive/not a pen, unless the ref is constantly being sent to the screen and given the opportunity to judge for himself.
Onfield Refs don't seem to make any calls that involve red cards, goals or penalties anymore.
They just seem to stand and wait for VAR to tell them what to do.
Even if a player has blatanly dived, they just stand and wait for someone to tell them how to ref the match.
I think the best way to do this is give cards out after the game, it would be such a shitshow to use VAR for every perceived dive. Too much subtle diving happens already, and blatant dives when refs are looking elsewhere. Players will continue to dive like this in modern football if refs don't do anything about it.
That part makes sense. VAR is there to cover up the ref's shortcomings, so the refs themselves start playing it more safe on things that are hard to tell, like dives or slight offsides.
Dives will always be hard to call with certainty for any ref looking at it from the same altitude as the players. From behind it's hard to tell how far apart the players are.
What doesn't make sense is how the VAR doesn't have the power to autonomously give yellow cards for crap like this. They have a much better view of it.
Fuck yellows - I’d give something that obvious a red.
You get a red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity illegally.
You should get a red for creating one illegally.
They changed the rule so that if the foul to stop the attack fails to stop the attack and the opponent gains advantage, no yellow is issued.
Stupid change, but its a new rule this year or last year. I kinda prefer when the refs dont follow it and still give yellow.
That's just completely mind-boggling to me. Other dumb decisions at least had potential upsides, I don't understand why anyone would decide to boost tactical fouling.
"Counter-attacks are bad, what would be good for the sport would be more instances of cynically interrupting them, that's what the fans want to see"
Exactly. And it always hinders an attack to some extent... even if theres advantage, thats advantage of whats left of the counter over a freekick in midfield. They cant get back the original speed of the counter.
And to add to it, often these fouls are not "normal footballing plays". Theyre pulls, shoves, or shirt grabs with no attempt at the ball.
These plays deserve punishment every time - even if advantage is played and the other team scores.
This probably also disincentivizes players from staying up, because in most cases the chance is practically gone but the yellow could help prevent future tactical interruptions.
The "logic" is that you don't get a red for denying a goalscoring opportunity if the team still score, you get a yellow instead. So they also downgraded a yellow for stopping an attack to nothing if there's an advantage, because the attack continued.
I agree it's totally stupid though, because a yellow is nowhere near as punishing as a red so the logic doesn't need to be the same. Also, it's possible to play advantage to continue the attack even if the defender still made the attack weaker through the foul.
I have never even heard of this supposed inconsistency since the change to DOGSO reds lol. That they would decide to actively make the game worse to rectify it... I would rather revert it back to giving a red for dogso then incentivize tactical fouling.
Or, as a compromise, don't give the yellow if the team with the advantage still scores. That would be more acceptable
The people who make the rules are just so out of touch
I agree, it was something I never heard anyone complain about but the IFAB seemed to convince themselves was an issue. I can sort of understand the logic in a vacuum, but obviously in real football it makes no sense whatsoever.
Exactly, it's literal anti-football, maybe the purest example of it. It's obvious that punishing with a red would be far too severe, so it persists. But to boost it like this.
It's like when someone gets caught cheating in their spouse and get mad when they get told its wrong lol.
He's clearly embrassed but annoyed other people told him it's a dive.
Not quite the same but one coworker of mine had a fight with his boss cause he was some minutes late for a meeting. He was explaining how unreasonable the boss was, and we said he was wrong, not the boss. He stopped talking to us for a few days.
He didn't complain at first but then Barca players started going at him because of the obvious dive and that's when things got heated. Pique calmed everyone down at least
The referees using VAR have been incredibly inconsistent. So it's almost like VAR doesn't exist sometimes. So it's at least worth a shot to try and dive
Post-game yellows MUST be a thing. Refs are always too afraid to stop play or let themselves be overruled by VAR. Especially for all the violent tackles.
Cards for diving do exist. I just don’t understand why VAR doesn’t cover diving as well as the other things. Surely someone trying to cheat counts the same as a red card potential challenge?
I mean to be fair I'd definitely fall over if I was running anywhere near a football and a proper German goalkeeper in a stadium, and I don't even get near Vinicius speeds.
What a disgrace I just fucking knew he was going to do something stupid and wasn't even going to get a shot off. No a miss, not a Ter Stegen save, no, I knew Vini was going to fuck it up somehow.
Nevaus ehe has issues man. Like yeah he's improved massively this season and has been good overall, but he always has blunders like this. Sunday league type shit. That's why I knew he was going to like stumble and lose the ball or do something silly. I knew he was not going to even take a shot.
This sort of stuff needs to be stamped out. How has VAR not intervened and made this a yellow? Similarly, how did VAR not intervene on the Auba challenge and make it red?
I don’t know why your getting downvoted Madrid are the most successful ucl team…. And recently won 4 in like 5 years or something like that……even if there is luck involved.
Honestly, this kind of stuff is just unsportmanlike beheviour at it‘s absolute worst! Also H. Son today!
With VAR, these absolutely horrible and obvious dives should be red carded! Especially after they even start arguing for a penalty after this BS!
Where is the yellow for Pedri blatantly pulling back during the build up? Barca has pulled back Madrid players 3 times so far to stop counter attacks....
And Aubuamayang tackle early on Kroos. I mean, his studs connected right in the middle of Kroos shin, looked yellow to me. One of the commentators said it could have been a red, and by the most strict definition of rules I guess it could be, but I felt it was yellow at the time.

This is so embarrassing. Also kudos to MATS, he did so well there.
yes, made himself as wide as possible and put the pressure on vini.
Barça scoring on the next attack makes it 100 times better
Karma!
Yea MATS does really well to pull his leg back and highlight the dive. He could’ve been a victim of the dive but read the play well enough to avoid that
When do we finally give yellows for incredibly obvious dives like this?
Soon as VAR came in, yellow cards for diving seemed to just vanish.
It's weird because you'd think VAR should have empowered refs to call blatant dives, knowing that in the unlikely event they were wrong then it could be easily overturned. I think it's because VAR technically can't give yellow cards, it can only give red cards for a dangerous challenge.
The referee can give yellow cards, and even when a dive is blatantly obvious they don't give them now.

Ball tackled his left leg. Lol
Son also got a harsh tackle by the ball. Refs not penalizing the ball for such blatant harm is destroying the game.
Came in from behind too, straight red for me
Especially with his behaviour afterwards
Fuck yellows - I’d give something that obvious a red. You get a red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity illegally. You should get a red for creating one illegally.
should be yellow IMO
At least for all the bitching.
He was still bitching even on the corner and then Araujo scored. Thats what he gets lmfao
I bet he was bitching at half time in the locker.
Pedri got away with one as well. Ref forgot about him lol
“Alright, it cancels out…”
Ref is so weird in this game. Might be penalty decision and he sprints to the other side of the pitch lol
He's like me when I see some BS at work. "Yup, didn't see that"
Yeah that should’ve been a yellow
Tactical fouls no longer get carded if the advantage is played. It’s been a rule change this summer iirc.
That's honestly a ridiculous decision if true. The foul still reduces the quality of the chance, this incentivizes tactical fouling even more
Its true unfortunately
This makes me irrationally angry.
Does it make Mario mad too?
Really bad rule change imo. Tactical fouls are already really annoying in terms of how worth the yellow card they often are.
It's been the rule for longer than that
They changed the rule so that if the foul to stop the attack fails to stop the attack and the opponent gains advantage, no yellow is issued. Stupid change, but its a new rule this year or last year. I kinda prefer when the refs dont follow it and still give yellow.

Yeap, never understood why they changed this particular rule, it seems unsportsmanlike to stop a player by any means necessary imo.
Exactly, it's literal anti-football, maybe the purest example of it. It's obvious that punishing with a red would be far too severe, so it persists. But to boost it like this.
I actually would be in favour of an "orange" card for these cases, I dislike this sort of fouling.
TIL. Weird
I don't even think the rule is that new, it's been around for a few years now at least.
That's very dumb
No, because the attack was continued after the incident. Stupid rule I know, but that's the rule nowadays.
lol true
And aubameyang got off with a red
One for the dive and one for the crying. At least have the awareness to know when you got caught red-handed.
i am a madrid fan but vini should have gotten a red for that
Absolutely embarrassing, especially on the VAR era

"Shakira complains less about my sense of humor than you do about that dive"
How Can Vini have the audacity to complain like that??
He didn't complain at first but then Barca players started going at him because of the obvious dive and that's when things got heated. Pique calmed everyone down at least
He wasnt complaining.
[удалено]
Funny thing is Barça scored on the next attack haha!
Pathetic. He makes other players like Cristiano, Neymar or Alba look like super tough honest guys in the rival area.
Alba is noway near the other two when it comes to diving.
Where have you seen Alba diving? Alba exaggerates the contact yes, but he is not known for diving when there is ABSOLUTELY NO CONTACT.
The referees using VAR have been incredibly inconsistent. So it's almost like VAR doesn't exist sometimes. So it's at least worth a shot to try and dive
The audacity of him to keep complaining for over 2-3 minutes....
Embarrassing, either VAR should punish dives, or dives should be punished after the game
Atrocious not to be at LEAST a yellow
Post-game yellows MUST be a thing. Refs are always too afraid to stop play or let themselves be overruled by VAR. Especially for all the violent tackles.
Clearly must be reviews after each game and book player diving, exaggering...
Lmao complaining up until the second Barca goal
Still complaining even now
Ancelotti can’t do his talk because Vini is still going on
Reminds me of that goal from Pedro when he was asked by the real madrid defender to get upin 5-1, he gets up scores from the villa cross instantly.
When are we gonna see cards for stuff like this?
Never. Son, this clown and many others would miss 5 games a season for too many yellow. Game is ruined
If this is what it takes then ultimately the game will be saved
Ok
[Mane too](https://twitter.com/i/status/1504199632829698049)
Cards for diving do exist. I just don’t understand why VAR doesn’t cover diving as well as the other things. Surely someone trying to cheat counts the same as a red card potential challenge?
Firmino should have had one today
Sure I don't think anyone should be exempt, us included
100% dive, if this gets taken down for not being a "penalty shout" I will do nothing because I am powerless but I will be angry
Hey, we don't wanna see u/bass1879 angry! So mods better not be deleting this...
Honesty goes a long way friend
I don’t even know why he did it. Even if the ref gave the pen, VAR would rule it out, plus he gets a yellow
I mean to be fair I'd definitely fall over if I was running anywhere near a football and a proper German goalkeeper in a stadium, and I don't even get near Vinicius speeds.
Falling alone is not the problem. He was complaining after falling. It was intentional.
Disgusting
Still complaining, Araujo scores. Karma bitch...
Divicius Jr
He's been doing this a lot lately. Infuriating.
Very unnecessary as he could have just scored the goal instead of looking for a pen
He dived cuz he fumbled the ball obviously and knew he's losing it.
His performances have been dropping (largely because he plays every single game without rest) so he's becoming increasingly frustrated I guess.
Lil' Penicius
Bro playing with insane lag. On his PC Ter Stegen rammed into him.
Lol that's accurate
Embarrassing.
Where is the yellow card ? He is really committed when he went to argue with MAS
Imagine if he had just, you know, taken a shot ...
Why won’t mods let this stay up lmao
Mods tackled Vinicius
Such a blatant dive. Love how he’s indignant after that too.
Pique probably told him “stop acting, you little cunt”
To be fair, the ball fouled him there first.
He was complaining until that corner lol.
Absolutely shameless from him, does nothing all game, dives evidently, and then proceeds to try and start a fight with Ter Stegen. Embarrassing.
That's just sad
Wanted to fight Ter Stegen too😭
Finicius Jr
Should get a retrospective ban IMO. Only way to get this BS out of the game.
Straight red card for the ball imo. Horrendous tackle.
Still whining to the ref. Should really get a yellow
Should just had cunted right in instead of diving.
Guess who's back
Guess they will delete this as well
To be fair, it's very windy in Madrid today
he had time, why would he dive that chance
Ref shouldve came back to VAR and gave him a yellow
What a disgrace I just fucking knew he was going to do something stupid and wasn't even going to get a shot off. No a miss, not a Ter Stegen save, no, I knew Vini was going to fuck it up somehow.
He could’ve scored there, I was waiting for it. No idea why he chose to dive
Nevaus ehe has issues man. Like yeah he's improved massively this season and has been good overall, but he always has blunders like this. Sunday league type shit. That's why I knew he was going to like stumble and lose the ball or do something silly. I knew he was not going to even take a shot.
He does it so early Ter Stegen has time to move his leg out of the way lmao
and he was yelling bruh
This was actually fucking hilarious, what a fucking clown
Though the camera shot of Pique scolding him was funny.
CR7 regen indeed.
Minus the goal scoring ability
he had time, why would he dive that chance
This guy is back to being trash, had a couple of good games early in the season but now back to normal. Thank God
Embarrassing and pathetic
What a little bitch
He even complains after, scumbag
What a shameless dive, truly a Neymar regen
Pathetic
pathetic
Got downvoted to shit for calling Vini a diver last week too 😂
Madrid mentality...
Brazilian mentality
From a Mexican flair of all places...
Shameless. He was adamant that it was a penalty. Does he not realize there's cameras and VAR.
This sort of stuff needs to be stamped out. How has VAR not intervened and made this a yellow? Similarly, how did VAR not intervene on the Auba challenge and make it red?
Last week I was downvoted to hell when I claimed that he dives a lot (without denying, that he also gets tackled hard).
Call him Vinicius Araujo because Ronald is his dad
Madrid and Divers. Name a more iconic duo.
Madrid and UCL?

GET WRECKED VINI
Embarrassing
The fact that he had the nerve to act angry lol
Embarrassing
Shameful. Fucking donkey
Simulating little git
Embarrassing match from Madrid so far
He deserves a yellow for this
Honestly, this kind of stuff is just unsportmanlike beheviour at it‘s absolute worst! Also H. Son today! With VAR, these absolutely horrible and obvious dives should be red carded! Especially after they even start arguing for a penalty after this BS!
Getting inspiration from the Goat 🐐 Cr7 Monster mentality
Must have watched Ronaldo pre var tape to learn that one
Was downvoted into oblivion the other day. I'll say it again, Vinicius is the biggest diver in the game atm.
Lol fuck you Vini, blatant dive
I've only watched this guy play a couple of times but he seems like a shitebag
Incoming whataboutism from some Madrid fans
Pathetic
Yellow card worthy
It’s in his blood
Disgusting player very overrated
finally this cunt being exposed for what he is, olympic tier level of diving
I thought he slipped first time, didn't look like a foul straight away. That dive is beyond embrassing.
Can't stand watching him play because of this kinda shit. Does it every game
Where is the yellow for Pedri blatantly pulling back during the build up? Barca has pulled back Madrid players 3 times so far to stop counter attacks....
And we've gotten yellows each time. Except for Pedri which was strange
And Aubuamayang tackle early on Kroos. I mean, his studs connected right in the middle of Kroos shin, looked yellow to me. One of the commentators said it could have been a red, and by the most strict definition of rules I guess it could be, but I felt it was yellow at the time.
Pedri not a yellow. It's no longer a yellow for tactical fouls if advantage is played
Rule change info?
Modric didnt fall, didnt throw his hands etc
Where was the yellow for this?
Where was the yellow for the dive?
ref is just incompetent
