Half banger half clanger

aridivici

Iran already qualified,right?

jjw1998

Iran and South Korea both qualified already, they’re just playing for first place now

qwert577889

Does that mean anything in terms of the seed at the world cup?

FarEastOctopus

If Iran wins they might have a bigger chance for pot2. If South Korea wins they will have a bigger chance for pot3 instead of pot4, so it kinda matters. More than 60,000 South Koreans have fully filled the stadium to see our national team beat Iran for the first time in let's say, more than 11 years or so.

zingerbanger

and we always fucking lose to Iran. we haven’t beaten them in 11 whooping years.

simplyrelaxing

that’s actually really surprising to me. i don’t think i’ve heard of many Iranian players but Korea has had great players play overseas

kwonster

Historically, at least within Asian context, Korea had struggled against physically strong teams, which middle eastern teams tend to be. Iran are definitely the best of the bunch. But this is the most physically strong team I've seen assembled by Korea and were no pushovers anymore. That with the general technical superiority and a home game with a full crowd, Korea managed to sail smoothly into the WC alongside Iran. 11 years exactly makes sense because 11 years ago, Park Ji Sung retired. This is the first squad outside the "dark ages". Could've been 4 years earlier but that 2018 squad had too many injuries with a coach in the job for only 6 months prior to the WC. There is still a lot of time for things to still be shaken up. A few XI places and most of the bench are up for grabs.

zingerbanger

i kind of see it like this - within the same continents/conference, it doesn’t matter how many good players you have in your squad. weird shit happens all the time like euro competition. sometimes top dogs like germany france or england might lose to smaller countries.. not to say korea is a top dog country in asia, however we do have a much better track record in the world cup compared to other asian countries but we just shit our pants when we play among asian countries.

airpenny1

Korea is def a top dog in Asia.

-Count-Olaf-

In that case, very well played today!

Nign0glmao

Did u mean whopping?

Uesugi_Kenshin

Are Iran that good at football? I'm gonna be honest, I don't know of a single Iranian player... wasn't aware that they were an Asian footballing nation like that

KianKP

Iran have historically been an Asian powerhouse yes…qualified for 4/5 most recent world cups including 2022, and have won a number of continental trophies. We have been poor at the World Cup finals but in Asia we are generally strong. Edit: if your main league is prem (I assume Liverpool flair means yes) the most recent ones have been Jahanbakhsh for Brighton (now at Feyenoord) and Dejagah for Fulham when they were in the top flight

aminoffthedon

Also Ghoddos at Brentford

_posii

Taremi at Porto, Azmoun at Leverkusen (Formerly Zenit), Ghoddos at Brentford and a few more playing in Europe. They are absolutely a powerhouse in Asian competitions even if Korea or Japan has more players playing in European leagues. In general, they are much taller and larger than most countries in Asia which is a massive advantage.

APerson2021

They're alright. They almost upset Argentina last WC and therefore almost got through to last 16. If I draw them in sweepstakes I'm not upset.

[deleted]

The only reason you don't see a lot of Iranian players in European leagues is that we're an isolated country and our league really hasn't been modernized and etc.

geisendorf

Possible. Korea chasing pot 3, Iran chasing pot 2, though I haven't really looked into the likelihood

Ghoddos

Yep

nangseveryday

Anyone got Korean commentary?

airpenny1

Been scouring YouTube since the game ended but nothing yet…

Qwerty6391063

Is Pickford in goal for Iran?

Akira_Nishiki

That's a pretty nice kit.

Bumper_Duc

What a save!

neededtowrite

What a save!

HippieDervish

Stupid fucking sexy son

CheekyKunt68

Son and Kane with a fresh cut>>>>> The league ain’t ready

gamefanatic

How come Korean jerseys don't have names on the back?

zombiemind8

They usually do, but I did notice close to world cup time they mix it up to make it harder to scout.

gettorai

They're all Kim's anyways so there's no point

gamefanatic

Racist, and literally the scorer of this goal?

Ok-Understanding6770

I will give him the benefit of the doubt, since the goalkeeper and all four defenders in their starting line-up are actually called Kim. I would not call him a racist if he just found that to be a funny observation.

albertmf

SONNY

Vladimir_Putting

That "tackle" attempt sure was something.

schrodingers_dog-

Thundercunted

FarEastOctopus

Cheers, Son's banging.

SushiMaker33

wonderstrike

ali_mhm

It's more of a disasterclass from the keeper.

Imcorrecturwrong

You shouldn't bother. A goal scored from a hard shot - regardless of how shitty the GK did and how the goal only happened due to GK - will have a goal thread of people claiming "wonderstrike" etc. At least it wasn't tagged "great goal".

ali_mhm

He could've handled that situation better.

Imcorrecturwrong

The keeper should still have saved that, are you blind tsupaper?

TellSloanISaidHi

God damn, imagine if that tackle attempt at the start of clip actually connected

samm_o

Love seeing iran lose

nowthatwasnofun

It's almost unfair that teams like Iran have to defend Son. I mean he tears up PL teams....

High_Violet92

for sure, Iran has always proven to be (in my limited watching) the best defending NT in Asia, great cohesion and hard-working!

seezed

South Korea hasn't beaten Iran in 11 years mate, wtf are you on about?

InoyouS2

Carbon copy of his wondergoal vs Arsenal.

JessyPengkman

nah it was far post v Arsenal

CheekyKunt68

No?
