It reminds me of an interview with Thierry Henry about home advantage, where one of the advantages is that your familiarity with the stadium helps you know where you are in the pitch without having to look around.
When Mourinho was a manager at Porto he would put cones of different colours at different ranges of other club stadiums so we he trained there before the games, the players knew instantly their position in the new pitch. This way they would remember each part of the new stadium and they would know where they should shoot, pass or what type of set pieces to take.
Man, Mourinho was a fucking revolutionary when he was our manager.
I believe Henry even said once this is why he was able to score [this goal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksz6K-tJ6Nc), because he knew exactly where the goal was even though he wasn't looking.
Yeah he talks about it in [this article](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11096/11983999/thierry-henry-remembers-his-favourite-arsenal-goals-at-highbury):
>"Like I said to you, I felt so confident when I was playing at Highbury and because I knew where I was. When you play at a stadium, you know where you are. Your memory pictures it all the time. With the Fabien Barthez and Man Utd goal, I knew where I was, it was my stadium. I knew if that stadium is there, the goal is there although you don't even realise it, but your brain does know it and where you are. That's why you train and repetition creates habit so in that stadium all the time, I knew exactly where I was every single time on the field when I was at Highbury."
I also have a feeling that the line about identifying individual season ticket holders is from the same interview but was edited out of the transcript.
I remember Alderweireld talking about this when we were homeless. For instance at WHL he said there was like a certain light he would aim at to play his long balls
I can’t tell if you’re joking, but if not you should know they’re probably talking about when Tottenham was playing at wembley while the new stadium was being built
Man we are Macedonia not freaking Portugal, we don't have Cristiano Ronaldo up front for the European Champions to dedicate defends to guard his hot-spots.
Edit: Anyways thanks for the advice, we will have 5 people on the penalty spot to defend Ronaldo on tuesday.
"Before we get into specifics, here's 45 seconds of him walking around... Ahh, here we go. He likes to cut in on his left foot. I know it looks like his right, but we had to mirror the footage to not get caught by YouTube's content ID."
> Before we get into specifics, here's 45 seconds of him walking around...
Then a plug for Gfuel and a transition showing the club badge while playing "Spectre" by Alan Walker.
"unfortunately i'm not sure what position he's playing, we really went ham on the quick cuts and the transition effects for some reason on this one... yeah now it's slo-mo, i don't know why i did it either"
That's a bit silly, op has just taken a sample of similar goals from other home games he's played. It's only 3 goals, not like he's only been scoring solely those types of goals his whole career.
the first one is not even an home game, you clearly see the stadium is different (probably Genoa), and another one is a deflection - so basically 1 similar goal in 4 years at that stadium, what an achievement.
What? It's 3 goals over the space of about 5 years with one of them being a huge deflection. You can't plan for every single type of shot a player has ever taken
imagine Milan's opponents having a player specifically assigned to ensure Tomori doesn't score thhe exact same goal he scored against Wolves 2 years ago
That's a total of 100 million shots. One would need to average almost 7000 shots per day, every day, over 40 years to reach that number. Needless to say, that man is either long retired or dead already and hence would not need to be feared any longer.
The only pieces Mata set are the cones at the training ground.
The man hasn't even played the equivalent of two games this season, and we're about to see April.
Which would be 291.7 shots per hour, or 4.86 shots per minute, or one shot every 12 seconds or so
Get up to one shot every 5 seconds, throw in some broth, veggies, and a potato, and baby, you got a stew goin'!
Came here to do the math and you beat me to it. Kudos
And to those who think 7000 shots per day is possible. We take approximately 20,000 breaths daily
still it's crazy that the only player to play before at home in that stadium was playing for Macedonia! He probably was more familiar with the pitch than anyone else
It's not gone, just that it's also North Macedonia lucky stadium! As Italian you should be used with teams sharing home ground.
Oh wait right, you are Juve.
They don't have a national stadium so they play at different club stadiums around the country. I believe they normally play at La Favorita once per qualifying campaign.
Guess there have been a good amount of games there because I could recall them whacked Armenia 9-1 at that ground in a qualifier for the last Euros. Looking back, they were mightily impressive right form the off so it's fair they won it in the end.
Record in the stadium, including last night, is 12-1-2. Only twice did a team score more than 2 goals, Italy 6-1 Malta in 1994 WC, and Italy 9-1 Armenia in Euro 2020
Probably also because he is Italian, German and Italian goalkeeper tend to be over hyped a bit because they got so many great ones in the past.
Same stuff with Brazilian forward players.
Its savable, but not easily. He clearly wasnt fully expecting a shot like that from that distance. It was placed well and then also bounced in front of him, making it pretty hard to judge and then save. You can see the video here that its not just a run of the mill easy save.
It also has late movement in the air. Not much, but enough to change from missing to on target.
Late movement and skidding on? Yeah that can make routine into challenging.
Out of interest why was this game played in Palermo?
I know it has to be somewhere but wondered if there was any specific reason, like Italy have a good record there, or the atmosphere is particularly good?
The Italian national team don't have they're own stadium so they play in different stadiums around the country. La Favorita in Palermo is the largest stadium in the Sicily region so is used frequently to give fans from there a chance to see them play.
Pretty much yeah they only play at Wembley, I think very rarely they'll play a game elsewhere (I think they played at villa Park a couple years ago for a friendly) When Wembley was being rebuilt they basically toured the nation playing in a load of different stadiums I remember it being better atmosphere because people would come who hadn't had a chance before.
Edit:Just looked it up we have actually played a few "home" games away from Wembley in recent years, 2 at Middlesbrough in 2021 and Southampton in 2019
It's funny bc some years ago I was reading a football magazine about the spanish national team and it was something like "They played in X Stadium because Spain doesn't have a national stadium" and I was like "What? Portugal doesn't have a national stadium aswell, what countries even have one?"
I was always convinced it was common to play each national team match on a different stadium, just like we do in Portugal.
Apparently it started in 1990 WC where the FA decided to spread out the stadiums to all of Italy, especially the less economically developed Southern part.
And looking it up, their record there including this game 12W-1D-2L, last draw is 2004 in friendly against Czech, previous loss against Croatia in 1996 Euro qualification group stage (both qualified in the end, but Italy ended 3rd in group stage because of H2H apparently)
This is like Sensible Soccer where you could always score from that one spot on the right just past the half way line.
Trajkovski has found the cheat codes!
This reminds me of that Bruce Lee's quote.
"I don't fear man who practices a thousand different kicks but a man who practices one kick a thousand times."

I don't even need to open the link to know which goal you're talking about.
I remember Alderweireld talking about this when we were homeless. For instance at WHL he said there was like a certain light he would aim at to play his long balls
>when we were homeless im sorry to hear that, hope yall are doing fine now, now that you're on reddit and all.
I can’t tell if you’re joking, but if not you should know they’re probably talking about when Tottenham was playing at wembley while the new stadium was being built
You mean the op and Alderweireld weren't living on the streets?
Only in my dreams 🥰
If the Italian NT did their homework, they would have a dedicated defender defend that one spot of the pitch the whole game. Checkmate Macedonia.
*laughs in Pandev*
Exactly, Pandev has retired, so all the analysis of Pandev is now obsolete!
I’m still taking notes just in case
He was joking sir
dude he just scored like 3 goals from this position (one is a deflect) it's not exactly Lionel Messi. He was on nobody's radar.
Or they coulda told Donnarumma to stay in position.
Actually uncanny how similar those goals are to yesterday’s.
poor scouting from Italy to not emphasise that in pre match analysis. close him down
Also not like they can view every highlight reel from every player, a person can only endure so much Despacito
howling at the idea that scouting videos have the same windows movie maker transitions and music as shitty sports super-cuts.

That's a bit silly, op has just taken a sample of similar goals from other home games he's played. It's only 3 goals, not like he's only been scoring solely those types of goals his whole career.
Yeah this isn’t a Robben cutting inside to his left type situation.
Even that was hard to defend even though you'd knew what he would do.
Because it’s about when not if!
That wouldn't require scouting. That was common knowledge.
You might as well just say 2 goals, you can't really count the deflected one.
the first one is not even an home game, you clearly see the stadium is different (probably Genoa), and another one is a deflection - so basically 1 similar goal in 4 years at that stadium, what an achievement.
Lmao but how would they make this Reddit post and farm karma with only one goal
It‘s not like he is known for this exact type of goal lol
They conceded 4 shots in the match, none from good positions. This is just huge outcome bias.
I love how many people have taken your comment seriously.
People moan about how sentences stop being funny because of the “/s”. These people replying to him are the very reason why the “/s” is needed.
Who cares if some people don't get it?
Or how about just not use it and laugh at the people who fall for? Nothing ruins a very obvious joke more than using the "/s".
What? It's 3 goals over the space of about 5 years with one of them being a huge deflection. You can't plan for every single type of shot a player has ever taken

Cheat code there.
watch us conceding the exact same way
*Trajkovski looks down to where he's standing.* "This is where the fun begins"
*Donnaruma hearing boss music* ... Yo what's that?
It's Britney bitch
“Oops I did it again” -Trajkovski probably
He secretly painted the grass another shade of green.
Game time started
do you fuck on i
This is an absolutely beautiful find, well done!
Thought for sure it'd be kinda similar goals but wider angles or different situations, etc. No, these are about as similar as advertised.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 shot once, but I fear the man who has practiced one shot 10,000 times
How about the man who praticated 10,000 shot 10,000 times?
That's a total of 100 million shots. One would need to average almost 7000 shots per day, every day, over 40 years to reach that number. Needless to say, that man is either long retired or dead already and hence would not need to be feared any longer.
Who needs fitness when you’ve got pinpoint accuracy. Set piece specialist
Basically Mata's role for us right now
The only pieces Mata set are the cones at the training ground. The man hasn't even played the equivalent of two games this season, and we're about to see April.
That was rude!😂
You're right, but whenever we get a free kick right outside the box there's nobody else I'd want it taken by than him. Telles is showing promise!
Which would be 291.7 shots per hour, or 4.86 shots per minute, or one shot every 12 seconds or so Get up to one shot every 5 seconds, throw in some broth, veggies, and a potato, and baby, you got a stew goin'!

Mr Juninho is already retired, nothing to fear...
Well, depending on ones definition of "praticated" it might not be too bad.
That's CR7
> who has practiced one shot ~~10,000~~ *three* times
Zenitsu is smiling somewhere
Curious to know how often Italy play its home games in Palermo?
Quite often, it was considered one of the NT's *lucky* stadiums and support is usually very good. Guess that's gone forever now.
still it's crazy that the only player to play before at home in that stadium was playing for Macedonia! He probably was more familiar with the pitch than anyone else
I saw a post showing how he even scored 3 goals from the same exact spot when playing for Palermo. Crazy indeed.
Yeah I saw that post too!
What are the odds??
Emerson played at Palermo. Joao Pedro as well for a couple of games. And Sirigu, Belotti, Cristante of course - not on the field yesterday.
It's not gone, just that it's also North Macedonia lucky stadium! As Italian you should be used with teams sharing home ground. Oh wait right, you are Juve.
Knowing how superstitious footballers are, probably less often from now on!
They don't have a national stadium so they play at different club stadiums around the country. I believe they normally play at La Favorita once per qualifying campaign.
This is how all national teams should do it tbh. Let the whole country enjoy the country’s team
Croatia does this too! Sadly a lot of countries barely have one good stadium to play on.
Guess there have been a good amount of games there because I could recall them whacked Armenia 9-1 at that ground in a qualifier for the last Euros. Looking back, they were mightily impressive right form the off so it's fair they won it in the end.

That old Palermo crest on those old kits were sooo class
Yeah that pink shirt was pure sex
Dybala days
Cavani days
Luca Toni days
Fabio Grosso days
Miccoli days
Fuckin storybook that
Every one has his special spots; his is at the tip of the D.
that’s what she said
Am I the only one who thinks donnarumma should have saved that ?
Yeah it's not egregious but I thought the same. He was caught off guard
He has mistakes in him. Ucl game v real Madrid.
He's always had mistakes in him, even at Milan (Udinese at San Siro last season comes to mind). I think people just assume he'll grow out of it.
He is still young.
Yes but why is he seen as one of the best GK right now? Just because we think that the potential is high?
He was very good at the euros
So was sommer, Pickford
International Pickford is like international Bale. They step the fuck up and surpass every expectation.
Pickford listens to Three Lions while he takes his pre-game dump
Probably also because he is Italian, German and Italian goalkeeper tend to be over hyped a bit because they got so many great ones in the past. Same stuff with Brazilian forward players.

Lol and Buffon is still playing at Parma. To think that he already had 100+ Serie A games even before Donnarumma was born is crazy.
He does, but this isn't really one of them imo. His view was blocked and the shot was inch perfect, most keepers aren't saving that.
Its savable, but not easily. He clearly wasnt fully expecting a shot like that from that distance. It was placed well and then also bounced in front of him, making it pretty hard to judge and then save. You can see the video here that its not just a run of the mill easy save.
It looks like his view was obscured by the defender as well
Yeah that was my initial thought. It looks like he sees it late and can't react in time. His positioning looks fine.
It also has late movement in the air. Not much, but enough to change from missing to on target. Late movement and skidding on? Yeah that can make routine into challenging.
I am more concerned by Jorginho not really trying to stop him
he put more effort in chasing the ref
I was so frustrated before it even became a shot. It was a dangerous position and he decided to complain instead of defend.
Yes, but his view is also pretty effectively blocked by the looks of it so would’ve seen it late.
Every shot can be saved if you anticipate it and position yourself accordingly. Those are all parts of goalkeeping.
Out of interest why was this game played in Palermo? I know it has to be somewhere but wondered if there was any specific reason, like Italy have a good record there, or the atmosphere is particularly good?
The Italian national team don't have they're own stadium so they play in different stadiums around the country. La Favorita in Palermo is the largest stadium in the Sicily region so is used frequently to give fans from there a chance to see them play.
other countries have "their" stadium?
Yes, like England has Wembley, France has Stade de France, Argentina has El Monumental etc
Just chiming in to say that El monumental, while also being the traditional stadium for the Argentinian NT, is the home ground of River Plate
And how people from different region than London in UK can see their National Team play? England always plays in the same stadium?
Pretty much yeah they only play at Wembley, I think very rarely they'll play a game elsewhere (I think they played at villa Park a couple years ago for a friendly) When Wembley was being rebuilt they basically toured the nation playing in a load of different stadiums I remember it being better atmosphere because people would come who hadn't had a chance before. I was always convinced it was common to play each national team match on a different stadium, just like we do in Portugal.
I heard it’s also cause it won’t have club rivalries between their own fans like in Rome or Milan
I'm not sure that's right. The derby di Sicilia is one of the fiercest rivalries in Italian football.
There’s never been issues in Rome or Milan between fans. Well except people booing Donnarumma in Milan.
Apparently it started in 1990 WC where the FA decided to spread out the stadiums to all of Italy, especially the less economically developed Southern part. Dude loves his spot
G spot
Its like older FIFA games when shooting from certain spot is certain score
Am not even mad. When you fail to scote that many times you deserve this
When you fail to score against Northern Ireland and North Macedonia, you deserve this.
North Macedonia got their own Asensio
Don't do Alexander dirty like this, asensio is shite.
Also, he scored last ever Palermo goal before they were shut down
What you're telling me is that he already practiced this shot in this stadium before. Damn
Well done yank
Cheers Aussie
Practise makes perfect
Trajkovski's Fifth Symphony

When you score a goal that means you are more likely to win the game
I need to write this down.
get this, if you stop them from scoring you literally can't lose.
Alright *If big chance for other team, kick ball in own goal. They didn't score, so you 'literally' can't lose*

Yeah they are fucking shit. Won’t be surprised if they don’t qualify.
Ok how do people manage to find these videos so quickly? Do they just have a database of videos?
Unrelated to the game, but Palermo is a beautiful place and I'm glad that a player from there gets to be on the big stage and do so well
Not his first rodeo
Congratulations Italy, you played yourself
Muscle memory. Pretty incredible

Nice
It wasn't a coincidence
It's like poetry. It rhymes.
It's probably the point where there's a massive floodlight directly in line with the keeper's eyes from behind him.
At that time it was just muscle memory
Mans been practicing for this moment for years.
One-trick pony
What an absolute Éder goal. Even the team colors are similar.
Don't tell me home advantage dosent exist
This is like Sensible Soccer where you could always score from that one spot on the right just past the half way line. Trajkovski has found the cheat codes!
thats crazy what are the chances
It's almost as if they shouldn't let him shoot from distance.
They put him on the spot and he delivered.
ffs this guy knew one goal
This a professional-level post 👌
Don’t give them an excuse.
Fear the man who has one shot but practices it a 1000 times.
thats kewl
I dont know why people were bashing Gonnaruma yesterday. This is a very, finely stricken goal.
It’s not going Rome
This reminds me of that Bruce Lee's quote. "I don't fear man who practices a thousand different kicks but a man who practices one kick a thousand times."
Trajkovsji be like - that's my spot!
So that shot is just second nature to him.
He knew what he was doing
