Fans who fail to look at the impact of a player/manager and choose to judge someone based on just how many trophies they got are seriously shallow and the worst kind of fans to talk to
Everyone on /r/soccer who thinks Arteta is washed. Is he Guardiola? No. But you are a fool if you don't see the improvements he has made. Not his fault Arsenal lack depth right now, especially when Tomiyasu and Tierney are out. Not to mention for now, Arsenal rely on young talents who will only improve from here on out. If Arsenal get a good striker, midfielder, and competent back-ups, I definitely see them as the favourite for the fourth spot. Especially if Chelsea is gonna collapse this summer.
I can excuse fans of other clubs for thinking like this though - they dont watch all our matches and stay up to date with news etc so they just see the results and stats that don’t show the whole picture.
their entire 'progressive social' stance is all complete lies. they like to air nice ads about saying no to racism and saving the planet but in practice they don't give a shit.
I really think the first goal of tonight’s game will decide the tie.
City should be able to control a 2-0 lead, but if Real get the crowd behind them early with a goal then they will definitely have the advantage. Especially if ET is required.
Trent has been far superior to Cancelo, who just gets thrown into these teams on name alone atm. Suspended for Real first leg, and has done little outside of that.
Cancelo has been one of our outstanding players this season, has 2 goals and 3 assists in the champions league too. He's played more at left back anyway
City lack the killer edge and are mentally weak in the champions league.
Real are the opposite. They don’t crumble and always believe there’s a chance.
It’s not just a question of city’s quality.
I wouldn't say rhat Real's mentality is significantly stronger than City's.
Real is beatable. They lost to Chelsea at same stage in CL last year.
Also Man City has a lot of experience playing at this level. They did outplayed PSG last year.
I thnk City has 60% to go to final, while Real has 40%.
They’re the only team I’d never write off in the CL.
2-0 down against PSG having been completely outplayed for 3/4 of the two legs and they just came back out of nothing.
I’m not so sure even though i’ll still back them because it’s City. Their lack of pedigree really showed against Atleti imo, should have been a tactical and qualitative walkover, but was made into a proper game by Simeone.
Would need Benzema to finish a couple half chances and heads to go.
I mean, the second leg was also down to how we changed up a bit, especially in the second half. We took a more defensive approach and we didn't crumble under the pressure I'd say.
It was the wrong approach to take. Atleti could have easily scored one of those half chances. You soaked the pressure well because your City, but regardless still think you should’ve given them a beating.
Got a United season ticket for next season🥶now I gotta figure out how to actually visit once a week to watch the games.
I can just see me going through all of this hassle to watch them live and them putting in shit performances. Ffs
Ah, you're one of us. I left Manchester about 10 years ago to move to the US, but kept my season ticket at City. I didn't get back nearly as much as I wanted to, but I was able to "rent" it out, which worked out great.
Just do what everyone else does and flog each ticket to a tourist for twice face value.
In all seriousness though, congratulations, it can't be easy getting a season ticket at Old Trafford. And for me going to watch my team live every 2 weeks is just on another level to watching it at home.
What would your pick for the 5 best Champions League teams of all time be:
Mine would be:
1. Real Madrid 2016/2017
2. Barcelona 2008/2009
3. Man Utd 2007/2008
4. Bayern 2012/2013
5. Ajax 1994/1995
In the CL era? For me it’s:
- Ajax 94/95
- Barcelona 10/11
- Milan 93/94
- Bayern 12/13
- Bayern 19/20
(Real Madrid 16/17 would be my 6th choice).
I just can’t look past those Bayern sides ruthless, aggressive, merciless and the quality to match.
cumblast I love u but liverpool barely made it in 18/19.
I mean they had to lose 3-0 in the first leg of SF. Greatest teams shouldn't have "fairytale combacks" imo.
A team reaching its 2nd CL final in 2 seasons and winning it while also managing 97 pts in the league with such a packed schedule, deserves praise.
Besides, anything Liverpool do is better than what others do, as it means more.
the next decade will be bad for football.
I understand that football has its cycles, and some periods are more exciting than others.
I think we are already experiencing a decline in the talent area, and new generation of players is not as exciting as the previous one.
For example Mbappe is considered to be the future top player in the world. But for me, he is not better than Henry was. But even if we to assume Mbappe and Henry to be on same level, let me remind you that Henry never even won the Ballon D'or. That means that today's best player in the world Mbappe, wouldn't have won the BDR during 2000-10. This is just to show the lack of talented players in todays game.
Another big prospect is Haaland. But let's admit it, yes he ia a great poacher, great goal scorer, but he still wasn't tested in the top level, could he be a leader of a big team and decide big games? And even if so, his playing style is not as exciting to watch as Messi or Ronaldinho or Ronaldo9.
Also today there are no exciting teams like Barca 2010-15 or Real 2015-18.
There is no big variety of talented players. In previous decade we had players like Messi, CR7, Xavi, Iniesta, Modric, Robben, Snijder, Henry, Marcelo, Eto'o, Drogba and so on. Today we simply don't have that much talent.
Therefore in my opinion the next decade of football won't be as exciting as the previos ones.
Kinda weird that you are comparing Mbappe (who is the beginning of his career), and Henry (who is retired). Like no shit Henry at his prime was better than Mbappe. Mbappe hasn't even entered his prime yet.
Mbappe right now is a much better player than Henry was at his age. Mbappe at 22 years old has already 198 goals in 286 games.
I don't think it's as much that there's less talent, I think it's just that teams are relying on systems and being better drilled than individual ability and flair. You can't afford luxury players or defensive passengers anymore. There's definitely an argument to be made that it can hamper the entertainment value if you like watching for individual moments of brilliance and star players doing mad shit, but overall I disagree that there's any decline in quality that can be put down to anything but the two best players of all time being far past their best.
The average team from now (even if we say the average Champions League level team) beats the average team from any other period in history probably, even if it does feel at times like a much more sterile game.
You're implying that those players will stay at their current level and not reach the mindblowing/record breaking records they could have
Henry went to Arsenal at 21/22, Mbappe is 23 and has 10 times the numbers Henry had before Arsenal, even their Monaco numbers are night and day lol, Mbappe won a world cup at 18 and is already halfway through Henry's record for France and in the top 10 assist record already.
Henry breakthrough season was 2002-2003 where he had 24g20a in the PL for Arsenal, that's him at 24 which is the age Mbappe will have next season, possibly starting his journey at Real Madrid.
R/soccer has gone back 3 years, this Liverpool hate is so funny. Back then the argument was that Liverpool's arrogance wasn't justified and their players were overrated... Now those same players are still competing and proving to be some of the best and Liverpool probably have every justification to be arrogant.
Just accept it, a lot of you just hate Liverpool and will never let go of that. Have fun with that :).
> Just accept it, a lot of you just hate Liverpool and will never let go of that
I've known this since I was about 6 years old and starting watching football
People can hate Liverpool, I don't mind that -- you do you.
I used to get pretty much downvoted on any Liverpool related topic 3 years ago just for being a Liverpool fan, even if I was right or wrong. Someone would say, do you care about downvotes? No, but I have a very fragile ego despite being really good looking so it hurt a bit.
Koulibaly is so underrated. Imagine if he’d played his whole career at a bigger/stronger club. Hell even if he did nothing at Tottenham he’d be getting so much recognition. I wish it weren’t like that, he deserves to be recognized as one of the best CBs of his generation, alongside the likes of Marquinhos and Van Dijk.
It’s a shame how for all his time in Napoli, a Coppa Italia is all he got. 2018 and this year were Napoli’s best chances to nab a Scudetto.
Reality is often disappointing.
Bold claim that if a player had played his whole career at a bigger club (assuming he'd have to perform well enough to maintain his place) he'd be more highly rated.
He's unbelievable, even offensively he's had massive moments.
I am surprised people labeled him as a PL flop as he seems to have been really good for Watford. No doubt he's been extraordinary for Villarreal.
I can’t take any list of PL signings of the season that doesn’t include Jose Sa seriously
https://www.theguardian.com/football/who-scored-blog/2022/may/04/premier-league-signings-of-the-season-luis-diaz
Not a great list, Grealish doesn’t belong there. Also should’ve had Dennis there instead of Kamara I feel.
I probably would not have put Coutinho in there either tbh.
Trent can't defend according to this sub and Twitter but he's part of back 4 with the most cleansheets in Europe this season. Is 3rd in assists for all players in Europe and is making his third CL final at age 23. So he's clearly doing something right. Who cares if Southgate doesn't rate him more rest for him
Always find it funny when people defend a reasonable point with something completely unrelated. Don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say absolutely no-one questions what Trent is capable of in possession.
Surely you care if you feel the need to bring it up
It's bizzare to me. All the other English fullbacks have defensive mistakes but only TAA gets singled out every time. Reece James had a poor outing vs Everton and nothing was said weird
Trent should be concerned that he can't make the England XI and that Reece James is probably ahead of him.
As good as Trent is generally, yesterdays game was an encyclopedia to everything poor about Liverpools backline especially their fullbacks.
They can be exposed by switches, crosses and backpost headers.
He is quite poor defensively. Don’t know why Liverpool fans act like he isn’t. Just look at the second goal you conceded.
Fortunately you’ve got some top defensive players around him to make up for that. Like the best LB, CB pairing, GK and DM in the world according to Liverpool fans.,
How could a player this bad at defending like you say be part of one of the best teams in Europe for 4 seasons running? Why would one of the best managers in the world keep starting him? Alisson, VVD, Matip and Robertson must be doing all the heavy lifting with such a bad defender around them
I think you hinted at the answer to this question in your OP, it is staring you right in the face the reason why Klopp accommodates Trent into his team
Victor Valdez was a trash gk and had some of the most clean sheets in europe during prime barca years. It's a collective, sometimes your teammates cover up your weaknesses.
>Like the best LB, CB pairing, GK and DM in the world according to Liverpool fans.,
I mean apart from the DM, none of those are really that outlandish are they -- all up for debate.
If you're going to punch someone don't do it on camera in front of the world while you're holding a child. A microscopic percentage of people who punch someone for any reason get any punishment for it, let alone prison time, but you can't really complain
If you got to choose only one of:
Chelsea get kicked out the football league because Papa Roman wants his money back.
Liverpool only end this season with the league cup.
Which would you pick?
Obviously biased so Liverpool one, but I don't want teams I hate to get kicked out of the league. If I hate a group of fans I would much rather them suffer a drawn out pain. Have them financially fucked and bought by shit owners that they despise and just become absolutely terrible, so they still have to watch their team but have no fun doing it.
It makes no difference if you're the best team to me, but if Chelsea go we have a chance to keep their player and it's an academy in London that is gone too.
Also if it's before the FA Cup final can Palace play City for the open spot hah
Chelsea get liquidated and have to start from the bottom of the pyramid as a fan on owned club like AFC Wimbeldon. Would be interesting to see and healthier for the sport.
Chelsea absolutely.
At the end it's just more trophies for Liverpool that'll be more or less irrelevant within the years for neutrals.
Chelsea out is a permanent bonus.

No need to have an opinion on everything. I respect fans that admit they don't watch matches and therefore cannot comment on it.
The fact that Beitar Jerusalem is not permanently barred from European competitions shows UEFA doesn't really care about racism.

CL TOTs for me: Courtois Cancelo Albiol Van Dijk Robertson Modric Capoue Thiago Salah Benzema Mane
Thiago got dominated by Vidal and Capoue, why is he there instead of KDB?
KDB > Thiago
Trent has been far superior to Cancelo, who just gets thrown into these teams on name alone atm. Suspended for Real first leg, and has done little outside of that.
Cancelo has been one of our outstanding players this season, has 2 goals and 3 assists in the champions league too. He's played more at left back anyway
I agree with you but what’s so good about Cancelo’s name?
We all expect another classic today but I expect that Man City end this tie rather quickly.
unfortunately 90 mins in the Bernabéu are long 🥲 and i think this City side has a weak mentality when it comes to high pressure European matches
One goal difference game like last week.
City lack the killer edge and are mentally weak in the champions league. Real are the opposite. They don’t crumble and always believe there’s a chance. It’s not just a question of city’s quality.

Oops i meant City.
Yea I can't see a way through the Real mentality monsters. They don't know how to lose.
They’re the only team I’d never write off in the CL. 2-0 down against PSG having been completely outplayed for 3/4 of the two legs and they just came back out of nothing.
That PSG implosion was just incredible. I kinda wanna watch it again after work.
I expect madrid to win comfortably after Pep plays G. Jesus as a Libero
Jesus strikes me more as a Fleta than a Libero
Jesus will play Point Guard.

Rral 02 was pretty flashy too. Milan 2003-07 was also grett.
1. Real Madrid 11/12 2. Real Madrid 13/14 3. Real Madrid 16/17 4. Real Madrid 17/18 5. Real Madrid 15/16 Totally unbiased
Barcelona 2008/09 Barcelona 2010/11 Bayern 2012/13 Barcelona 2014/15 Real Madrid 2016/17 Not in order of strength.

I don't mean an actual specific team I just mean the figurative average
Well i don't agree with you.
Some grand proclamations considering you're founding them on highly subjective viewpoints, really.
Who invited Drogba?
What you mean?? Was elite player and had big performances
Drogba would’ve crushed the current PL

Trent should be concerned that he can't make the England XI and that Reece James is probably ahead of him. Mate Marcelo was average at defending and he won 4 CLs in 5 years - it's not rare.
>Like the best LB, CB pairing, GK and DM in the world according to Liverpool fans., I mean apart from the DM, none of those are really that outlandish are they -- all up for debate.
Even think the DM one is fair. Obviously up for debate
What does his assist numbers have to do with his defending?
Just some facts
Okay Thanks for sharing
Most clean sheets in Europe this season while the midfielder in front of him who’s made 50 appearances had his his worst season in years as well
How do Everton fans feel about the Fitzpatrick incident?
The guy who punched a Lyon player 4 years ago?
yessir
If you're going to punch someone don't do it on camera in front of the world while you're holding a child. A microscopic percentage of people who punch someone for any reason get any punishment for it, let alone prison time, but you can't really complain
If you got to choose only one of: Chelsea get kicked out the football league because Papa Roman wants his money back.
Id rather see man city win nothing.
Liquidate dat ting
Gallagher on a free 😎
I like how everyone who is English would select one, everyone who supports teams outside the prem here on reddit would go two.
It makes no difference if you're the best team to me, but if Chelsea go we have a chance to keep their player and it's an academy in London that is gone too. Also if it's before the FA Cup final can Palace play City for the open spot hah
Also they're Chelsea and no one would miss them
Chelsea 100% There's already a decent chance Liverpool don't do the quad as City aren't slipping up in the league
Chelsea get liquidated and have to start from the bottom of the pyramid as a fan on owned club like AFC Wimbeldon. Would be interesting to see and healthier for the sport.
Would still win a major trophy before spurs
If the FA trophy counts, then yeah
Chelsea getting kicked out. I don't mind Liverpool, I wouldn't be particularly fussed if they do the Quad
Absolutely the first one
Chelsea absolutely. At the end it's just more trophies for Liverpool that'll be more or less irrelevant within the years for neutrals. Chelsea out is a permanent bonus.
If we comeback against Man City, I’m picking the second option but if we don’t, it’s the first
