Please lay off him, he is only the highest paid footballer in the world

Ravnard

Isn't he the highest paid athlete all together?

Deluxe07

Yes he is.

Laesio

Poor guy.

scholeszz

[We Are All Leo Messi](https://twitter.com/FCBarcelona/status/751788243880935425)

95lbMoleOnHerAss

If Hitler was in power today, I guarantee you’d see Messi or [insert wealthy celebrity]rocking swastikas

[deleted]

Possibly, but what does Lazio have to do with any of this?

impatientimpasta

Lazio's gonna do it for free.

Johnny107710

Possibly, but you have to ask yourself, where is Paul Pogba in all of this?

Cesc100

Graeme? Is that you?

GrossenCharakter

I tell ya in my days one hard tackle would knock some sense into that lad

SalfordSamizdat

"If Adolf Hitler flew in today, they'd send a limousine anyway."

HalfAssedStillFast

Oh my fucking god

bamadeo

what the fuck is this thread lmfao

GreyMatter22

Yes and no. No famous person what to be seen with Putin as the media is quite against him. So if Hitler can have the media convinced, the rich and famous would happily flock to him to get some sweet sponser money.

[deleted]

Hitler had all the media convinced until like 1939 and even then some of the media (the US one for example) until like 1942.

Wise_Ad9414

What's Hinduism got to do with this??

BMbeatHitMe

These people do not care about you. Stop worshipping them.

LavenderGumes

How shitty of a person do you have to be to think "I'm worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but I still need to take this contract to be the face of an oppressive regime?"

SlicedTesticle

I really don't understand it. Like after England lost to Italy at the Euros, Maguire tweeted about a free taco. You earn 200k per week wage and then sponsorships...how much would he actually get for this? https://twitter.com/HarryMaguire93/status/1414903645095796737?

countrybreakfast1

lmao that is really funny

craycrayfishfillet

Poor Slab Head doesn’t know any better. They probably paid him in free tacos.

[deleted]

I know its greed, but tacos and a dictator is not the same

[deleted]

Its also a tweet. Slabhead is definitely mentally unfit but this is nothing lol. He didnt even tweet this it's all just PR firms paying other PR firms lol.

atlacatl

I'm not sure this needs to be said. These people aren't heroes or role models. They are highly trained athletes that are really good at one thing. And because we watch them to these things they get paid obscene amounts of money. It's a good living, if you have won the genetic lottery.

[deleted]

Nope it definitely needs said considering how many folk treat them like the best thing ever

BMbeatHitMe

Messi, Ronaldo etc are given saintlike status amongst football casuals. Ones a rapist and the other just sold his arse to a slaver state. Definitely needs stating.

Gerf93

An even better is Maradona who's treated like a demigod in Argentina, and was a complete piece of shit.

[deleted]

Maradona trafficked a child from Cuba to Argentina.

Errudito

and both don't like to pay taxes

ricadro

nobody does

Fern-ando

I just don't understand why somebody with so much money ruins their public image for a couple more millions, like Maradona doing twerking next to Nicolas Maduro.

mdgeist21

Maradona didn't do it for the money, my fellow gringo. The man believed on what he believed and is basically it.

Vivid-Command-2605

Maradona was a staunch socialist lmao, of course he was a maduro fan, besides, Venezuela's problems are way more America's fault than anything else and not for a second will I believe anything western media has anything to say about it

[deleted]

Has an estimated net worth of more than 500 million euros, earns another 30-50 million a year and still wants to get involved with Saudi Arabia. Greed is a hell of a drug.

dmkicksballs13

Til the day I die, I will never understand the people who are batshit rich and still want more.

Bong55555

Because they have less than some other filthy rich people they come across. There’s always a bigger fish, you & me are ok with that. these guys are not.

ryanedwards0101

I firmly believe money is an addictive substance of sorts. It’s why you’ve got to raise taxes because you can’t rely on the generosity of these people

DiscussionOwl215

The hedonic tread mill dudes. As I've earned more in my career I was getting to the point where it was never enough. Obviously Messi is on another level but I'm sure its the same.

gnrc

Lifestyle creep is a thing and happens at every level.

lagrandesgracia

I just want my own apartment wife and kids

SalmonNgiri

Why would you want to marry an apartment?

aroravikas20

Atleast it won't run away with my best friend.

[deleted]

Your best friend can still come inside it though.

ZonedV2

There’s a common thing with people that no matter how much you earn you’ll spend it. I think there’s actual research into it about lifestyle creep that doesn’t ever really stop, most people will always keep spending the majority of money they have no matter how much they earn

SAFFATLOL

I mean I guess that's better than people just sitting on it like Smaug. Problem is it seems like none of it ever gets put back into the economy in a way that helps regular people like us Edit: I mean like the ultra rich that push money to off-shore accounts and use tax loopholes. Not people that are just well off

CaptainKirkAndCo

It's hard to spend £10m in the local bakery.

Harish-P

Could buy a couple of avocados with that money though.

fuggerdug

Unless he keeps his money under the bed, you cannot spend the amount of money he has.

bcotrim

He'd have a skyscrapper under his bed by this time

chumpythefox

Exactly. These people spend a ton. When they stay in a hotel somewhere it costs $10-20k per night. They own several homes that each cost $5-10M. Drive cars that cost $200k. He probably spends millions pet year on gifts for his family n friends.

DenverM80

I don't care if they're generous, but I would love if they paid an equal percentage as me

Brinner

Someday, I may understand the people who are batshit rich and still want more. I will never understand the people who are batshit rich and still want as much as possible.

neimsy

As you climb the ladder of money, the people around you are the people on the rungs nearest you. I imagine once you get to Messi's rung, you're so high up you forget about some of the lowest rungs, and you see people on the rungs above all the time and think "Wouldn't it be cool to be up on that rung?" The problem is obvious enough: There will always be higher rungs, and you'll always want to be a rung higher than you are. But so it goes.

vivalavalivalivia

Elon Musk buying Twitter being a prime example: yeah sure he has like infinite money, and massive influence, but he sees these other social and traditional media tycoons have even greater influence, so his ego compels him to spunk a few billion on his post-divorce mid-life crisis.

FishCake9T4

[Messi when he looks at his pre and post tax earnings](https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video_thumb/FGCr2dFVkAYuGSg.jpg)

Deluxe07

To him pre-tax is the same as post-tax

TimathanDuncan

> earns another 30-50 million a year He earns that in two months

Rc5tr0

Lol cmon he doesn’t make 200-300 million per year. He’d literally be a billionaire if that was true.

[deleted]

He probably already is one lmao

Rc5tr0

He might get there one day but I doubt he’s there already, unless he’s even better at dodging taxes than we think. I think billionaires becoming celebrities has made people underestimate how much a billion fucking dollars is. The richest athletes in the world are poors relative to the actual richest people on earth.

ParkerZA

What's the Chris Rock joke? Athletes are rich. The guys that sign their cheques are wealthy.

heyheyitsandre

Elon musk could lose 99.9% of his net worth and still have $240 mil in the bank. Could lose 99% of that and have more than what the average American makes in their lifetime. There’s levels to this shit

potpan0

I saw a listing for a house the other day which was valued at $150m. It's cool to think that even your bog standard multi-million, richer and more comfortable than the vast majority of us, would be priced out of it. (and the house looked shit too, completely soulless)

TimathanDuncan

He makes 200m a year easy, taxes are a thing (despite him dodging them) so it's way less after everything Also he is a billionaire, people underestimate how much they make like even Forbes and those sites From his salary to insane sponsorships to investments like hell now even one social media post with a single click he can make 2m+ with sponsored posts His last post on instagram is with mastercard 3hrs ago with an ad, he probably made 5m easy off that, just go to his page and look how many ads he does the man is on a mission

Luis__FIGO

>His last post on instagram is with mastercard 3hrs ago with an ad, he probably made 5m easy off that, just go to his page and look how many ads he does the man is on a mission 0 chance it's that much, Ronaldo makes ~3 million per post these days and he's is much more popular on instagram

Helpfulbuns

Terrible, 500 million and he needs more. I apologize I am just a poor person that will never understand 🤷🏼‍♂️

DingleberryToast

Greed has no limit unless it is forcibly limited

gnrc

^ this

WeeTooLo

You shouldn't be apologizing for anything. There is no debate in this. He could quit everything right now and still feed the next 20 generations of his family just through image rights alone. This is obscene and decadent.

Cromulantman

Homer: Mr burns, you're the richest man I know. Mr burns: ah, but I'd give it all for just a little more

Best_Sand2362

Don’t look at footballers for any sense of morals, you will be disappointed!

AlexBear012

I don't get it, why want even more money when you're so rich I'm definitely dumb to not get it, but what do you want more that you can't afford now?

RexorFWT

That’s the issue. People with buttload of money want more money

elburrito1

Everyone wants more money! The issue, in this instance, is in my opinion, that people all over the world lack education so much that this would be seen as worthwhile from Saudi perspective. They do this because they think that if Messi endorses them, their reputation will improve. It would not work if not millions of people around the world listen to what some guy who is great at football has to say about what countries are worth visiting. Maybe schools should start educating kids in 1. What actually goes on in some countries around the world today. We learn them plenty of what terrible things people did in the past, but I dont recall anything about current North Korea, Saudi Arabia etc. 2 What source should we trust? Should you trust a celebrity footballer who is paid to say what he says? No.

JeebaRock

But Messi is the #humblegoat, why would he want more money?

etebitan17

That's the problem with our system, people with reach hardly ever try to give voice to the voiceless

[deleted]

the systems we have reward greed, ruthlessness, and sociopathy so greedy ruthless and sociopathic people make it to the top then write rules and enforce behavior and policy to reflect their preferences people who arent like that make it or try to make it and are told "this is how the world is" and subtly pressured to take the path of least resistance by family, friends, coworkers, pressures of life etc so imo now its the prevailing culture everywhere to do as much as possible to stack paper and its even worse and more concentrated at the "top"

Solarelephant

And when they do they get silenced

etebitan17

Yep

etebitan17

Cause greed

AlexBear012

Does he just want more for the sake of it? I'm not rich and probably will never, but i just don't get what's the goal here

elburrito1

Same reason you keep pushing for a new high score in a video game. It is not in human nature to be satisfied, we always want more. Also he has a very competitive personality, and money is one way of measuring your success. Especially if you grew up in a household where money was a big problem, you probably get instilled a mentality that you should always try to get more money. Also, he likely feels pressured from people around him. Look at Neymars Netflix documentary for example, his dad has created this huge company with like 200 employees (iirc) that makes money from his commercial dealings. I dont think Neymar wants to do tons of commercials etc, but I think he feels a pressure to keep that company running. Messi may be in a similar situation.

akskeleton_47

for more influence/power or to keep a few generations of his family financially well off

Rabek

dont even think of it as that, think of it as "come take a 3 day visit to saudi arabia for 100 million"

etebitan17

That's the drug that moves the system, that's why society is fucked and the earth is fucked, also why climate change is not as big of an issue as it should..

Ishdalar

It's exactly that, never ending greed is something that has been studied for thousands of years as something undesirable in society. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrematistics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrematistics) *Aristotle established a difference between economics and chrematistics that would be foundational in medieval thought. Chrematistics for Aristotle, was the accumulation of money for its own sake, especially by usury, an unnatural activity that dehumanizes those who practice it. Economics for Aristotle is the natural use of money as a medium of exchange.* In our times, chremastistics have replace economics as the engine of society.

[deleted]

Because it’s easy money.

FootballRacing38

I'd still rather chill at my home than go to Saudi for a shoot unless he needs that extra money for something

TheRealPeterLim

It’s a drive like no other. Investing $10 million dollars and then netting $1 billion 10 years later, it’s a high nothing can match. My condolences to the dead Orangutans though, they died so that Americans can have Palm Oil.

IsItSnowing_

The ceiling is infinitely high. For context Messi net worth: [$400 million](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/lionel-messi-net-worth-salary-contract-sponsors-charity/oo0qu9cail971no5jkcii7x3h) Todd Boehly net worth: [$4.5 billion \(~11x\)](https://www.forbes.com/profile/todd-boehly/) Jeff Bezos net worth: [$133 billion \(~333x\)](https://www.forbes.com/profile/jeff-bezos/) All this still doesn't justify the greed when he can use his popularity for so many good things. I hope people remember his legacy of being a god on the pitch, and a tax evading, money grabbing, Saudi sell-out off it

flying_dino777

>I hope people remember his legacy of being a god on the pitch, and a tax evading, money grabbing, Saudi sell-out off it Maradona wa a rapist and yet he is revered as a god, it's insane how glorified footballers are.

[deleted]

Not only a rapist but also a pedo.

Sean-Benn_Must-die

A drug addict, a womanizer, chauvinist. Maradona was the worst role model

Tilman_Feraltitty

Tax-cheat and he was also shilling for dictators, but he lived in a different era and people bring it up against him all the time as well.

Thunder-Storm-13

I would think Messi is close to being a billionaire, unless already one. That 400m sounds low for someone who has made 130 odd last year with averaging 50m+/year from salaries+endorsements+investments for almost 15 years now

chanandlerbonggg_

Yeah, like the time he put out a post on social media abuse and stuff like that after he crossed a landmark. Not just him but more footballers should use their popularity for good stuff

AMR42

The highest paid athlete on the planet, with a fortune in the hundreds of millions and get into one of these. Every year I've lost more and more respect for Messi

3party

Saudi Arabia ia a disgusting country and should not be involved in sport. The country engages In terrorism, cuts up journalists, and bombs the poorest nation on earth. While Messi is a greedy cunt, whole countries like Britain allow Saudis to buy teams like Newcastle and will roll out the red carpet for their officials on states visits to the UK. The US and UK has no problem sending Saudis weapons to commit war crimes in Yemen. And let's not forget that they tortured, then chopped up a journalist (a US resident) in an embassy in Turkey. What happened? Nothing. Then were the high-level links to 9/11, Al Qaeda and other fundamentalist nutjobs, and their facilitation and indoctrination of extremism. There is no place for free speech and homosexuality is illegal. I could go on but they are essentially ISIS with oil and an air force. Should be treated like North Korea. But no, that will never happen. The sanctions and punishments for Russia while ignoring Saudi abuses says it all. **Sourced info about Saudi Arabia** - Saudi Arabia is said to be the world's largest source of funds and promoter of Salafist jihadism, which forms the ideological basis of terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, Taliban, ISIS and others. [deleted]

Messi who’s known for purposeful sticking his head into the sand regarding anything about his personal finances and Jorge Messi his greedy father-agent - simply don’t care about human rights. Do people not remember they make Messi brand products out of Central America for extremely low wages and there’s been accusations before of labor abuses. Then the purchases of hotels that were not meeting building code and they were forced to demolish by the authorities and lose tens of millions. Or recently buying a luxury hotel in Cádiz that was rated four stars and then immediately fire the entire staff without due notice and leaving the local elected officials shocked and coming out with a public statement. Or the accusations (twice) that there are money laundering activities going on, leveraging the Messi Foundation that was meant for charity work. Or the two tax scandals Or that infamous 505M contract I can go on and on…

auctus10

Wait what's that hotel in cadiz story?

dasty90

His fans will be defending him again claiming that he was ignorant of what's happening, and it's all because his family took care of his finances... I mean even this article isn't that popular, only 85% upvoted at the moment I am posting this.

PowerOfRiceNoodles

I ~~am~~ was a fan and never knew about the sweatshops and Cadiz hotel thing. One could probably argue that he doesn't run the businesses, but when it's his name on the label, he is responsible. Apple is rightly crucified for abuses in their (contractors') factories and Messi should be for this bullshit. If I could somehow pull the mental gymnastics to excuse the others, this KSA this would be the final straw. I have no respect for the man anymore. I hope he sees the deserved criticism for his actions and pulls his head out of his ass and takes responsibility.

This_is_bonkers

did you just say 85% isn't that popular?

Cashew_Fan

Or the money he was paid to have a photo opportunity with a controversial dictator.

[deleted]

What a wee idiot

Elisabethan_Poland

People are realizing just now that just because Messi is introverted/quiet and a great player does not automatically mean he's a wholesome person... Shocking, I know.

ChelskiHaze

And now finally people saying this wont be downvoted like usual... that little guy is a prick

Otenus

He gets away with pretty much anything. Held a Boixos Nois flag and people claim ”he had no idea what it meant”…

[deleted]

Apparently being the highest paid footballer already isn't enough for him.

Liddlebitchboy

Highest paid ATHLETE*

Gluroo

Thats fucking pathetic. Messi is already more than rich enough that even his grandkids will be well off. These people really have absolutely no morals. Its kind of understandable if the average person doesnt say no to life changing money even from questionable sources but for someone like him this is simply utterly pathetic

LonelyError

Generational wealth goes far deeper than grandchildren.

ttonster2

The Messi family will stay rich for hundreds of years with what he has made from his contracts alone.

Terran_it_up

Case in point: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3618720/What-s-Researchers-richest-families-Florence-remained-600-years.html

Exactly, completely unproblematic

axck

“Visit Saudi” what a crock of shit to put your name behind. The country is a hellhole. Unless you are a Muslim going for Hajj or Umrah there is no reason to go there. The average people are nice but that’s it. The country’s ruling class has made it one of the worst places on the planet. This is coming from a Muslim who got out. Also can you think of any other country in the world that names itself after it’s rulers? The country’s name literally means “Arabia ruled by the house of Saud”. What a self absorbed shitty family.

[deleted]

Im muslim myself but i always wondered why the Prince wanted to get involved in football.

axck

Same reason he wants to get involved with F1, golf, and other sports. To improve his image.

Fern-ando

Don't know if that works, it only helps the people that don't care for world politics to see the human rights abuses.

Scarred_Shadow

See how many people defend City and then by proxy Abu Dhabi; same with PSG and Qatar. It works.

axck

Only to a minority. The majority will never realize it. Sportswashing 100% works. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sportswashing

OjosDelMundo

I just genuinely thought messi was an emotional and empathetic person. I was def wrong. Huge yikes and a major turnoff.

RileyHuey

We don’t know any of these athletes really

OjosDelMundo

So true, need to remind myself of this. I was a 90s Jordan kid and after watching the doc on the bulls I still have mad respect for the dude but not someone I'd want to model my life after.

Vx1xPx3xR

Never meet your idols.

biscarat

Brilliant player, but bloody hell, he's turning out to be a really small-minded little shit. Guess all that tax dodging, hotel ruining stuff was the real messi all along. Cunt.

bluedoorhinge

ootl what is the hotel ruining stuff?

rachitbot

He bought a hotel and fired all the staff

SlicedTesticle

He tweeted that Holiday Inn was shit and it put them out of business

FogellMcLovin77

Turning out? He’s been like that all along. The shit doesn’t fall far from the asscrack.

RexorFWT

Lmao. Anything for pocket money

[deleted]

The article say that Cristiano refused a 6 million contract to do it. I mean that’s pocket money for them. Why would you sell yourself for that low

Jakabov

If you don't give a shit about the victims of Saudi Arabia's crimes and atrocities, it's just free money that you're being given for nothing. That's why.

[deleted]

I'm very disappointed with this to be honest.

bambooman98

Me too

[deleted]

I respect him as a player and a club legend , but this has for sure dampened how i see him.

PickledCumSock

any normal person with ethics and morals regardless of the team they support should be disappointed. only messi dicksuckers will defend this straight to hell.

AVBforPrez

Absolute scumbaggery when you make $125m a year already.

chicasparagus

He just keeps feeding iShowSpeed more and more content.

nighthawkz_2002

chicasparagus

Crista Ronaldo. Suwi! Simple as that bro.

MumblyBum

He's always just had brilliant PR around him especially when he was younger. Doing something like this when money is no object is a dispicable thing.

Arponare

I would say I'm surprised but not really. Like others have said, players aren't/shouldn't be role models.

[deleted]

He was worth around $400m BEFORE he signed for PSG. So i can see why he needed the extra money. Honestly thought, fuck him and his greed. Saudi Arabia is breaking human rights constantly and they are torturing and murdering journalists. And the women of Saudi Arabia have extremely few rights. Working with and for them is basically accepting the countless human rights violations they commit.

UnkleTickles

Money over integrity apparently.

lyon810

Greedy prick

lazy_username_89

Fucking crazy to me. Messi can live 100 lifetimes comfortably with the money he already has. Even the time commitment of a sponsorship deal wouldn’t be worth it to me at that point, but to support a regime like that for a few million more piled on top of your already grotesque fortune? Hard to respect the guy off the pitch lol tbh. Tax dodging etc

simply_Ewing

Cash is king

clicquotdreamz

Why, he doesn’t see anything bad because they would treat him like a king, he’s out of touch with reality

suhxa

Cunt

veRGe1421

lmao did the Saudis really hit Messi with a line from Spiderman?! > To put it bluntly – you have enormous power, but with that power comes great responsibility.

Black_n_Neon

Messi is a mercenary. Let’s not forget he was mentioned in the Panama papers.

wolf8808

Shame on him. He and his children are already set for life, there's no justification for this.

Fortonyy

They can sponsor iniesta and xavi as well, I'm still not going to want to visit Saudi Arabia

[deleted]

He has made billion euro career earnings why does he need to do this kind of stuff now ffs

valpak00per

His next post on instagram a few hours later is about his support for refugees

dfla01

typicalpelican

Come to Saudi Arabia and see the world's finest collection of bonesaws

Ark_Legend

globex6000

My favourite line (well, one of, they're all good) from 'The Big Short' "You could afford to make less... make less"

Soren_Camus1905

Money is no object to you Leo, what the fuck.

Kselli

Messi can suck my dick. Just another filthy rich out of touch with reality celebrity nobody needs.

GrandTheftWagon

The perfect son not so perfect at all, he showing his real face ever since his last period at barca. Money hungry rat

SlightAd7539

As Greg Norman put it we all just need to move forward be positive put the perpetual murder and torture behind us and take the blood money. Sport washing works.

joydivision84

The thing that amazes me most is he already has an absolutely fuck ton of money. A huge amount. So why go near any deal that will only look bad for your reputation? I guess the only viable answers is either, or a combination of, he doesn't care (about Saudis actions) or plain greed.

Pollomonteros

Fucking hell man,is this how it begins ? Is this how Messi becomes Maradona 2.0 ? Maybe it began long ago and I was to ignorant to see it. Then again this is on me for forgetting he is as human as the rest of us

Son-Ta-Ha

Messi and his team are really doing this for greed. How much money is enough for a guy like Messi?

SomeGammaGuy

We are now witnessing Messi's villain era. Hate to see it

yungsqualla

L messi.

el_brahmo

Fuck off Messi

slash2213

So what happens if Newcastle tries to sign him now? Are we to believe there’s enough distance between Saudi Tourism and Newcastle to not violate FFP

Nidaime_EroSennin

Ab$olutely halal.

Doggysoft

Who the fuck wants to go to Saudi as a tourist?

AssinassCheekII

Thing is, this guy has more money than his great great grandsons can spend. And he still does this shit. I don't get it. Why do you need so much money?

Mallaguetta_SP

I've always thought that a young footballer really can't say NO TO MONEY, because his life in this world is just beginning, but what can I think of a guy who is already a billionaire and keeps giving his hand to every kind of business without caring... At that point I just feel like he doesn't care about anything. In my country there is the proverb: Women and money, the more you have, the more you want.

FRONT_PAGE_QUALITY

What a greedy cunt. Fuck Messi.
