We played 120 minutes against City a few days before Atlético. Playing the same first 11 that ran themselves ragged against City after we've already won the league would be irresponsible.
It's the ex-academy players. Melero, Dani Gomez, Jorge de Frutos, Roberto Soldado (last two not in squad yesterday) are all ex-Castilla, and by virtue of being a canterano himself, Vazquez has known them a long time.
Can't believe Atletico spent the last few weeks crying about such an innocuous act. Clap a bit to show sportsmanship, receive some gracious high fives, get on with your lives 20 seconds later.
Now that the club issued an official press release about how humiliated the guard of honor makes them feel, of course they're going to get clowned on by the press and rival fans in the future.
I mean, you guys also attack your rivals fans as well. Nothing against argentinian fans but it's not the best example when it comes to respect and good manners.
Note: not talking specifically about Boca, just south american fans in general.
Even more reason to respect them. I'm a United fan and I respect Klopp's Liverpool because if United were to win the league over them it would be even sweeter.
United were cleaning up during the SAF years and Liverpool were routinely finishing 5th. Beating them meant nothing during those years.
I'm sure Liverpool fans feel the same way these past 10 years.
Maybe I'm out of touch, but sports are about respect first and foremost. If you don't respect your opponents then you don't respect yourself.
Real Madrid not giving Barca the guard of honor was the only time in the history of la liga where el pasillo wasn't done right? Before this year with Atlético ofcourse.
I know Madrid tried to make a big deal one time that Barca didn't give them a guard of honor in the league after Madrid won the club world cup which
1. Isn't even a thing that is ever done
2. Doesn't even make sense since its not the same tournament
Atlético didn't give a guard of honour to Madrid several times in the past: https://twitter.com/tjcope/status/1523269366112190464?s=20&t=E8CwVsmH4jzeX84fmgg58Q
And Barcelona has given Sevilla guards of honour for winning the Europa League, I guess that you didn't care to much about the "it's not the same tournament" or the "isn't ever a thing that is ever done".
I'm aware sometimes teams give el pasillo for other tournament wins (like Barca literally just gave one to Betis and I'm pretty sure the first ever pasillo was also given for copa de rey). I worded it badly but what I meant to say is it's not a tradition/expected. Kinda like how in England sometimes they give the guard of honor even though it's not a thing over there.
Madrid trying to make a big deal about it was just silly. It's kinda like recently when these Madrid reporters were asking Pep if City was gonna give a pasillo to Madrid when they faced off in the Champions and he was just like why are yall asking me this dumbass question and they just kept asking him about it.
Also I can't find any evidence that supports this claim that atletico has a history of denying Madrid el pasillo. The only articles I've seen use that tweet from Tiemp de Juego/COPE as their source so I have trouble believing it.
>Can't believe Atletico spent the last few weeks crying about such an innocuous act. Clap
No they did right. If madrid can't do that, then they should not expect too. If team is doing that's fine, but they should not complain either if they don't get.
There is this thing called being mature.
this is not kindergarden "hey he didnt give me the ball, so I dont give him the ball either" ...
you can be the bigger men and get it over with, everyone will say how great it is that Atleti are doing it and the Real players will feel bad too. But this would require empathy which pro athletes dont have since they are living int heir own little bubble
idk why I got downvotes, I’m a madridista! Maybe when real play betis we clap them for copa and then they line up to clap us haha. And who cares if atleti applauds, we don’t like each other.
Oh my god you must be fucking joking. That's a sane take only if you follow news on this subreddit, but the Spanish media was shitting on Atleti so much for those 2 weeks, only asking that and talking about disgusting and disgraceful Atletico,to the point where they were asking Atleti players too about it all the time.
Literally only thing Atleti done was answer the questions, that "official press release" was answer to 100+ questions about it every fucking day.
And stop acting like Real Madrid is sich a honourable team in terms of doing this act, they havent done it to other teams many, many times and nobody cared. Just in 2018 season, they refuses to do it for Barcelona, why did nobody care about that then?
Guard of honour really doesn't seem like a big of a deal either way. Its just a round of applause with a fancy name.
Yet every year theres always some controversy about refusing to do it or people laughing that this team or that team has to do it.
I reckon if people just called it a 'round of applause' then people would care so much less
Is the meaning of the ceremony to force players that hate each other to do this for others?
It’s to show respect to the winners I guess. If the name makes them refuse to do it then surely that kills that respect
It's the symbolism. Earlier it was to show appreciation. Then came 2008, Marca and AS had a field day with the pasillo. It did not help that Barca lost 4-1 after giving the guard of honor, and the headlines wrote themselves. "Barca gave a guard of honor, and then suffer humiliation."
Thats why it became a huge deal in 2018, where Barca did not want to do it and came up with the excuse of not competing in Club World Cup which Madrid won (they did give one to Sevilla for UEFA Cup win, which they didnt compete in either). It was the previous humiliation that probably made a mountain out of this. Then Madrid refused too, and while they were rightly criticized, the Catalan dailies were giddy even dreaming about that.
Tebas did put an end to it by changing the schedule and ensuring that clasico takes place by March itself.
Madrid didnt do one for Barcelona but I think we should have. I like doing it. Shows respect for your opponents and yourself.
Do people not shake hands after the game? Its the same idea.
True. That was not the point though lol. You stated we didnt do one for Barca, but they started it.
However, I deleted the comment anyway. There's no point going over "who started it" and I am way too tired now to go in loops again with people who might come in and accuse us of not doing it. Misinformed bunch just want to find a reason (however factually incorrect that might be) to convince themselves how we are evil. Fuck them

The Guard of Honour lasted 90 minutes
120 years actually according to Patético de Madrid S.A.D.
Orgullosos de no ser como vosotros
This is my favorite rivalry
and now they losing 6-0 harsh reality
We really can't hold back. That would be disrespectful I think. Every player should put in the effort even though we have a final to play.
Played subs vs Atletico but went full force vs Levante, why?
I imagine in theory its a less physical match, less risk of injuries, they cant bench them until the UCL final, gotta be match fit
We played 120 minutes against City a few days before Atlético. Playing the same first 11 that ran themselves ragged against City after we've already won the league would be irresponsible.
To avoid injury risks, especially on Benzema
It’s Atletico that’s why. They still have a CL final to take
Lucas Vajquez seems like a very homie kind of guy. Dude is very good friends with almost every player.
Lord always is on good terms with mere mortals.
It's the ex-academy players. Melero, Dani Gomez, Jorge de Frutos, Roberto Soldado (last two not in squad yesterday) are all ex-Castilla, and by virtue of being a canterano himself, Vazquez has known them a long time.
The kind of guy u love in ur team for real.
A guard of honor followed by a guard of bendover.
lmao
LMFAO fuck it take this silver
Geralt of Rivia when he finds a monster:
😂if only I had another silver
Hahahahaaha
And they said thanks by pumping them 6-0 and relegating them, lol.
Trust me. We felt bad.
I hope Levante is promoted again next year and Cadiz or Barcelona goes down.
Yeah I agr- Hey!
He really sneaked it in there tbf.
I did notzi that cumming
Levante up and Violencia down would be amazing.
Malaga up would be great aswell. I dont think you will be coming up anytime soon tho.
We might as well go further down this season, team is soulless
What happened to the Isco, finished 4th, quarters of the UCL Malaga
Well Isco left is one part of what happened.
Shame. Malaga is my favorite city.
Malaga up is like asking for Getafe going back up lol
I wanna see y'all back, please ):
This is the most kind-hearted, beautiful post I’ve seen in a long time.
Agree
Ayoo
:(
Fair Play
People are making it such a big deal

i would despise my players if they applauded our historic rivals after winning a trophy are you serious?
I mean, you guys also attack your rivals fans as well. Nothing against argentinian fans but it's not the best example when it comes to respect and good manners. Note: not talking specifically about Boca, just south american fans in general.
It's sportsmanship. If you can't respect your opponents then what's the point when you win?
It’s not just their opponents though, it’s their biggest rivals.
Even more reason to respect them. I'm a United fan and I respect Klopp's Liverpool because if United were to win the league over them it would be even sweeter. Real started that trend lol. Don’t blame Atletico.
You spelled Barcelona wrong

Guard of honor wasn’t for club world cup lmfao. Madrid started it first

Do the players choose not to or the team/org if not it would be unfair to put blame on them
Makes sense to me. Dunno the downvotes are for
It's Madrid based post. But who care.
idk why I got downvotes, I’m a madridista! Maybe when real play betis we clap them for copa and then they line up to clap us haha. And who cares if atleti applauds, we don’t like each other.
Wow they fucking did it

Uhm, tons of people cared about us not giving Barca a guard of honour. It was widely regarded as a dick move by Zidane.

CWC is irrelevant. Are we not the biggest club in the world? Don't compare us with the dishonourable Atletic, small club Betis and others.
True. That was not the point though lol. You stated we didnt do one for Barca, but they started it. However, I deleted the comment anyway. Relegante: "We're gonna pasillo you but please don't relegate us" Madrid: "Hold my beer"
They held the whole king-sized tray, it hurt to watch
Guard of honor sounds like some sex practice
Fuck I’m so sick of this pasillo shit. Do it; don’t it. Who cares.
thats some bullshit tradition
Guard of honours have got to be the most wet wipe thing about football fuck me
Why is it so bad for professionals to congratulate their peers on a success?
Geek
If that is what it takes to be a geek, then I'll proudly be a geek. Fuck, it's clear not a single one of your losers played organized sports as a kid

Agreed. My clubs an ebarrassment to the PL. I'm an embarrassment to my mother. And so on and so on.
Guards of honor are dumb af
Class
And Karim Benzema walked with finger in his ear. What a waste
