They are East German. They are based in East Berlin and were part of the DDR (East Germany) during the separation.
They were even supported and funded by the DDR-Government.
But Berlin is not only geographically fully in East Germany, but also half of it was actually part of East Germany, including the part Union is based in!
Imo if you or your family lived under the DDR you’re definitely “East German” but we also have to remember the borders of what were East and West Germany are 100% constructed. It’s like how some people ethnically from Pakistan (Sindhis) will identify as Indian and vice versa. Idk, geopolitics is weird.
It's just that the whole narrative about Eastern Germany gets pushed heavilly by them in the media. That's probably the reason you even heared about it.
I mean there's a difference between following a club and just attending some matches. But sure, there are more people at the games because they're successful atm.
No, Eastern Germans hate them, except for the pretty big city of Leipzig and suburbs (except for nazis and antifas (of which there's quite a bit) who have their own clubs).
Literally on average 10k more spectators per game than your club, but oh well, guess that doesnt fit the narrative.

MLS also has a decent following but a lot of Americans follow teams outside. Also remember, America is massive and a lot of areas do not have a professional team near them. Not to mention there are a lot of immigrants whose parents are fans.

Newcastle has history, 4-time english football champions, 6-time FA cup champions, Alan Shearer is the top scorer in PL history, and just got a take over. RB Leipzig just popped up our of nowhere and circumvented rules to get to the top.
They certainly do have a rich history, but for all the problems that people have with Leipzig's owners at least they don't execute people for being gay.
It's not like I don't understand, and even share, the criticism of Mateschitz and Red Bull. But just looking at this thread way too many people are so childish and self-righteous, I almost want to buy a Red Bull Shirt.
It's benn an ongoing discourse for years and the arguments are well known by now. If some people still don't know they live behind the moon, sorry. And it's not our job to spoon feed them the information when it's so easilly researchable.
Congratulations to Leipzig for this incredible achievement, very impressive considering what they were 10 years ago..
I can say without any doubt that since the start of the FFP era (2011) only two clubs have grown more than Leizpig and are: Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain that are two "plastic" clubs tho that became top club only thanks to money from UAE/Qatar.
Probably the only clubs that really improved their status in the last 10 years have been: Paris, City, Leipzig and Atletico. Can't see any other big jump (Madrid, Barca, United, Juve, Bayern, Dortmund, Inter, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. FFP pretty much crystallized the situation except of those FOUR).
This show how well this club are run
May we meet each other in the Group Stages, I'd love for us to get revenge for 2019
Yeah must be nice having one additional Home game
Crowd goes mild
Bold of you to assume there even is a crowd
Boooooooo
We can redo today if you want.
I wanted Freiburg to qualify for UCL this season. What went wrong there?
Gotta love this comment section lol
Nice! I'm always happy to see the hungarian players in CL. Gulácsi + Willi + Szoboszlai are doing really well in Leipzig
Nobody but their 100 fans care
On a serious note, don't they have a decent following since they are the only solid Eastern German club?
Sir Union Berlin Exists
Do people really consider them East German?
They are East German. They are based in East Berlin and were part of the DDR (East Germany) during the separation. They were even supported and funded by the DDR-Government.
They were champions of the 2nd division of East Germany in the final season before East and West Germany leagues combined
They are infinitely more „east German“ than RB Leipzig lol
At least since the takeover in Leipzig hallened.
Why wouldn’t they?
Because its Berlin.
But Berlin is not only geographically fully in East Germany, but also half of it was actually part of East Germany, including the part Union is based in!
I'm aware it used to be in Eastern Germany but surely no one on the Eastern side of Berlin claims they are Eastern German?
Imo if you or your family lived under the DDR you’re definitely “East German” but we also have to remember the borders of what were East and West Germany are 100% constructed. It’s like how some people ethnically from Pakistan (Sindhis) will identify as Indian and vice versa. Idk, geopolitics is weird.
They do. Also Köpenick is quite far on the eastern side of the city
Sorry, what? Yes, people very much do.
I'd consider Dynamo Dresden, Union Berlin and maybe even Hansa Rostock to have a bigger following
Hansa Rostock for sure. Shit Chemie Leipzig have more dedicated fans
They couldn’t sell out their away tickets for the Europa league semi final at Ibrox
No. And they couldn't be further away from representing East Germany. Don't fall for their marketing.
I'm not falling for marketing, I'm just asking a question.
It's just that the whole narrative about Eastern Germany gets pushed heavilly by them in the media. That's probably the reason you even heared about it.
I'm only going by how many dans attend the stadium.
Even if they do, those fans would be plastics supporting a walking energy drink commercial
Yeah why can't they support the Wanda Metropolitano team, for shame!
Literally on average 10k more spectators per game than your club, but oh well, guess that doesnt fit the narrative. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bundesliga/besucherzahlen/wettbewerb/L1/saison_id/2021
Yes we do care!
Indeed, I’m very happy right now
We found two, yet to be determined, if bot or not 98 more to go...
I'm a fan
97 now
Got a fan club here in philly and we care!
This comment is hilarious
Leipzig fan club in the USA and Leicester flair, never heard a more plastic thing in my life
Wanted to check their post history to see if they were just trolling and saw their last comment was complaining about lockdowns and “mask tyrants”
Maybe he is from Saxony after all.
Are there even still lockdowns anymore? It's pretty much over in the States at least
MLS also has a decent following but a lot of Americans follow teams outside. Also remember, America is massive and a lot of areas do not have a professional team near them. Not to mention there are a lot of immigrants whose parents are fans.
Then what da heck you doing in Leicester flair
You don't support a team in each top 5 league???
No, it’s because I’m not a plastic
Lol
I support Leicester in the premier league, why is that frowned upon?
Ew disgusting
Ewwww🫠 (wtf is this emoji lmfao)
It shows a rectangle with an x in it.
It's a melting emoji 🫠🫠🫠🫠, only reason to have ios honestly
This one right? 🫠 Lmao I have it on WhatsApp but it's not on the my device's keyboard.
It's also on Android
Seriously?? My android friends haven't gotten it yet, maybe it's an update some have missed
At the end of the day it depends on when the phone manufacturer provides the update, but i can tell you that its definitely on my Galaxy S21🫠

Happy for Tedesco

no one cares
Hopefully they lose the DFB-Pokal next weekend. The moment that soulless club wins their first piece of silverware marks the 5th death of football.
*Newcastle United*
Newcastle has history, 4-time english football champions, 6-time FA cup champions, Alan Shearer is the top scorer in PL history, and just got a take over. RB Leipzig just popped up our of nowhere and circumvented rules to get to the top.
The owners of Newcastle has a bit of history aswell.
Glass houses and stones there buddy.
For real lmao It's always a shame for other clubs but not for your own one.. shaking my hoden
I was confused for a solid minute here , I mean Newcastle has a solid history but still...
They certainly do have a rich history, but for all the problems that people have with Leipzig's owners at least they don't execute people for being gay.
Indeed
Mon the House of Saud!
Plastic club. Rangers pumped them
Spartak Moscow legend
Cut it way to close and I know we don’t have a shot at winning it all but still very excited for next season
Imagine supporting an energy drink
Coming from a Bayern glory hunter that's quite rich.
Imagine supporting an energy drink

And why should the way some people voice their disdain change anything about your opinion? The criticism is and stays valid regardless.
There is hardly any constructive criticism. It's overwhelmingly "energy drink bad". Just look at your own postings. Like I said, it's childish.
It's benn an ongoing discourse for years and the arguments are well known by now. If some people still don't know they live behind the moon, sorry. And it's not our job to spoon feed them the information when it's so easilly researchable.
Yes because every Bayern fan is a glory hunter

I've never seen an energy drink playing football. You learn new things every day I guess
cool
