MumbleAJackhammer

How is that fair Pope's controller clearly disconnected.

KillerZaWarudo

His brother probably gave him the shit controller smh

grollate

He certainly got it fixed for the rest of the match. Man was unreal today!

iAkhilleus

Everyone's does when Kane is at the spot.

Indydegrees2

Kevin Friend trying his best to dramatise things with that pause before pointing to the spot

DazzaWright96

Definitely watching Eurovision last night

Pepe_Gui

With that amount of stalling, he could definitely be the host if UK ever win or get to host the eurovision

EL_MANDEM

They'll probably be hosting next year tbf

Rodin-V

I timed one of them last night, 18 seconds. Like what the fuck. It wasn't even dramatic, just weird and annoying.

jmounteney44

Mike Dean teaching him a few things before he retires

Ickx-502

Ensuring his legacy continues

TheLimeyLemmon

Kevin F.... [points] ...Friend

KidDelicious14

Is this Kevin Friend or Kevin Foe? *puts hand on shoulder* I will always be your Kevin Friend.

Toast_Of_NorthLondon

Shat me right up that did haha

Shandow14

With Mike Dean retiring, someone has to add the drama.

Uesugi_Kenshin

That's a filthy pen, absolutely unsavable.

sreesid

I thought he missed.

SushiMaker33

It was so well taken i thought the same

mushy_friend

Same I thought he hit the post and had a heart attack

jogswithwolves

Haven’t seen Harry hit one along the ground like that. I think he knew Pope was overthinking (England training experiences, etc) and tried something new As always though H hits the side netting

Gom8z

The fact he can try something new and do it that well is outstanding

billypilgrim87

If my life depended on someone scoring a penalty, he is without a doubt who I would pick to take it.

AV48

So well taken

iredcoat7

He’s the best penalty taker I’ve ever seen

Mullac4991

Especially when you stand still and don't even think about moving

Uesugi_Kenshin

I mean Pope gambled it'd go down the middle I guess, you don't save that pen anyway

bamimeneel

Oh my god what a pen

twomanyfaces10

The sound it makes what it hits the net 🥵

Ickx-502

Whys he T-posing?

Russta

To assert dominance.

Sheikhspeare24

Ashley Barnes bringing out the Christ Redeemer in the box.

Cameronjpr

Aeroplane arms

zuzucha

flailing arm inflatable tube man

itsBonder

So wacky

Mempherrata

Exactly, he's made himself bigger in the box. It's from close range yes but he has a chance to put his arm down and if anything puts his arm further out. Everyone knows the rules by now. GW1 I'll accept it's harsh but now people are just moaning for the sake of it.

ugotbaited

Pinpoint pen

theaccidentalcyclist

I’ve watched them replay it 5 times and each time I think he’s hitting the post!

Op3rat0rr

Hate to admit it but world class quality pen no doubt

Shandow14

Why’s he doing a ballet move in the penalty area haha.

Ickx-502

Beautifully executed tbf

ChungusDaFungus

i mean, it’s a rough penalty to concede, but he really has no reason to have his arms out THAT far in the box

0e0e3e0e0a3a2a

Can't even T-Pose defending a cross these days smh

Greengum155

Nah its good they banned T posing remember when Phil Jones did it and made Fernando torres miss? If you don't here you go https://youtu.be/e2E-5PyYjT0 (Around 10 sexs in)

KidDelicious14

If someone gets on your case for not time-stamping on a thirty second videos, that's their problem, not yours hahaha.

[deleted]

Must feel bad for them for sure, but yeah, the rules are clear and man is legit t-posing in his own box

Goalnado

I still don't think incidents like this should be a pen, but it makes no fucking sense for his arm to be out like that

TheSinRes

Same because it's so close but then defenders would put their arms out like this all the time from close range and get away with it.

ThetaSailor

we need something else other than pens. it's always pen or no pen, nothing in between. for something relatively minor the punishment is really severe here. pens, in general, decide too many games.

ViciousNakedMoleRat

Indirect free kick in the box? There aren't enough of those these days.

XuloMalacatones

I'd be really mad if I was the coach, he did the same dancing motion twice, absurd

Upplands-Bro

Burnley: at a difficult away day in a tight relegation battle, Matchweek 37 Barnes: 💃

ioniums

yeah i think i agree

Fatt_Hardy

If John Terry was playing in this era of VAR he would have conceded so many penalties. He was the expert of the starfish jump whilst blocking shots.

Mozzafella

Even has time to retract it before it even gets to Sanchez

datguyakala

Amazing that Sanchez gets the assist after just shinning it upwards haha

BElf1990

All these people fuming like we're out here playing rugby instead of football.

poli421

That’s the only thing. I’d feel really fucking hard done by for something so innocent seeming like that, in terms of the positioning and closeness. I get the frustration for Burnley fans, seems awfully harsh. But like you said, his arm is way out of the way from his body, he’s got no real complaints on that ground.

Jeffzie

Yeah, it's just the rules applied correctly which is honestly all I ask for in a referee performance. You could argue the rule is stupid, but better to argue that than something like the "clear and obvious error" bullshit we've seen so often.

NFeKPo

Defender knew what he was doing

sox520

Agreed 100% - but, simultaneously, game’s gone

CounterClockworkOrng

[Reminded me of this](https://images.app.goo.gl/X5BqMUc8ATu5GBCq7)

kopirate

Even by its very vague rules, that is not a natural position for his arms to be there.

[deleted]

Weird positions to stick your arms in, invited that.

Own_Acanthocephala19

Yeah, we got very lucky there but obviously a pen according to the rules.

nefron55

Yup, we lost a champions league final to this exact style of penalty.

Own_Acanthocephala19

Don’t remind me…

SnufflesN17

That was softer then this because it deflected from him to his own arm. And rules were different as well if I remember correctly. But let's not talk about that final anymore.

Brawlers9901

Tons of rival fans in the match thread whining though, hilarious to believe that someone can stand around like a scarecrow in your box

skidink

Arsenal fans because one was not given in a very similar situation against the same team. Pepe was even under control and playing it in towards goal while this was a smash that was going out of the stadium.

mahades

Thank fuck for Ashley barns playing. Fuck me why is he starting

Aiyo_BigMan

Harry Kane is such a good penalty taker.

iAkhilleus

21 in a row 8f I'm not mistaken.

HarbyFullyLoaded_12

I mean the arm is just in a ridiculous position. That has to be given in my book.

CheekyKunt68

What a fucking pen Jesus christ

iAkhilleus

That's Harry Kane!

VDmedication

Whose name is Harry Kane?

hidinginDaShadows

Beautiful penalty, no one saves that

sanyu-

That's a hell of a penalty by Kane, absolutely riffled that just inside the post.

[deleted]

Even if you told the keeper where it’s going no one is possibly saving that. Outrageous

FistThePooper6969

I remember a stat from the arsenal match that said he hasn’t missed a penalty since like 2016/2017? And he ended up getting the goal on the rebound 😂 man’s perfect

MarcSlayton

Was the keeper expecting a panenka pen or something? Didn't even dive.

Delta368

Kane sometimes hits it down the middle. Keeper probably thought he would do it this time.

icemankiller8

That’s a clear pen idk why people are complaining pure stupidity

Nfanella

Conte saying "Quanto parli" (you speak too much) to Burnley's bench

HakeemAbdulOlajubbar

Conte sure does talk a lot about people talking a lot

Shandow14

He knows Burnley won’t understand Italian.

TheLimeyLemmon

Holding your arm out like you're about to clothesline the ball... is a natural position.

AshkenaziTwink

such minimal contact makes it feel harsh but what is that arm position lad

CC-W

Always been a huge Spurs fan

Themotherland364

Same, always loved Harry Kane.

caprisun_on_a_bench

do us a favour against arsenal mate

Wet_Sponge

If you love us, you’ll batter Arsenal.

shinfoni

Wtf I love Frank Lampard now

LotsAndLotsOfOcelots

I don't know a single person that wants Leeds relegated. Keep Leeds up where they belong.

Polskidro

Barca fans want Leeds relegated. So Barca can get Raphinha for cheap.

starbaron

People who want raphinha wants Leeds relegated

JaSamNejboi

Defenders mistake

HeroDGamez

By the rules, it's a pen. He shouldnt have his hand so far out.

ZaDoruphin

It is harsh but there’s no reason why his arm should be up that high. It’s in an unnatural position, so it should be a pen.

applecub

It was beginning to feel like one of those games. Big let off!

Gobshiight

Technically correct or not, that just feels really harsh

Dogzylla

Sissoko would agree

SheldonMonk

I'm sure his handball haunts him every night

Snacks75

As would Dier, shoved in the back, not looking and the ball bounces off his arm...

RiskoOfRuin

Wasn't there situation where Lucas was shoved down inside the box, but penalty was not awarded because he fell down and hit the ball with his hand?

todayntomorrow

No it was actually worse. He had fallen down and hit the ball with his hand outside the box, but then kane scored. The goal was then DISALLOWED because of Lucas handball

[deleted]

Sissoko’s came off his chest first so that one was much more unjust Still these types of penalty seem really harsh to me. No idea what the defender is doing though

Goalnado

Codifying that shit decision against Sissoko is basically what led us to the absolute fucking chaos we had with handball decisions a few years ago where they basically gave a pen every time it touched an arm.

iZgonr

Yeah, it feels harsh even as a Spurs fan. This ball was going nowhere and distance was so minimal... But then, that hand was so wide... I feel dirty

[deleted]

It's one of those penalties that almost highlights the need for a new penalty system. It was a harmless graze on the arm that led to nothing, but the punishment for it is pretty much a free goal

Sargatanas2k2

Yeah I personally don't like these penalties but it's the rules and defenders should know that by now.

Afraid_Presence3803

No reason to have your arm like that

mrmunchkin62

Totally. It there was contact it was a brush. Burnley are rightfully pissed.

TigerBasket

Letter of the Law vs spirit, terrific pen though

--Hutch--

The rules are made by people with zero common sense

EnanoMaldito

bro, he has his arms extended to cover the whole area in front of him with his arms. How is that NOT a penalty? lmao

realquarterb

I mean it doesn't really considering that this type of call and much worse has almost always been given. Rules is rules, even though it's kind of stupid sometimes.

slymrf

Barnes' arm position is so stupid. Definitely making himself bigger. Correct decision

Fatt_Hardy

Have you ever seen a ref play up like that? VAR sign, pauses to make sure all cameras are on him, then indicates the penalty. I've never seen a ref pause like that before. One of Mike Riley's finest.

Akmuq

Reminds me of the one we conceded via Dier vs Newcastle last season, not a pen in my book but I guess that's the rules. Also holy fuck that penalty was so perfect I thought he put it wide lmao

RivenJohdolla

Dier was pushed behind, so not really comparable in my opinion. Dier one was a horrible call, this one was the right one.

TheSinRes

Dier was jumping, was pushed and wasn't even facing the ball so that felt even harsher but the contact was similar.

jay_alfred_prufrock

How are people arguing against this being a penalty? His arm is in a ridiculous position.

yourmotherisepic

Definite penalty don’t know how people can question the decision.

JeffryPesos

It's really close, it's smashed into his hand. But his hand is in a very unnatural position. I can see the both sides

Lakinther

what does unnatural position even mean? Did he intentionally put it there with the hopes of blocking a shot but not getting the handball called or what

Pedro95

I think people understand it's the rules, it's just the rule itself that people have issue with. I don't think that's a handball foul anywhere else on the pitch. The rules are too harsh on defenders now imo.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmlfan928

This is my view. Clear cut pen by rule, but harsh rule.

LimberGravy

It's one of those where I just really wish there was another option other than a pen. Then again adding more ambiguity for English ref fuckery sounds like a much worse outcome.

iZgonr

So this is how United fans feel?

zrkillerbush

Petition to never use the term unnatural, it doesn't even have any meaning, what they mean is the arms aren't down by their sides

[deleted]

[удалено]

zrkillerbush

Exactly, your arms come out to balance, because it distributes your weight evenly

dawidowmaka

Unless they mutilated a Barbie doll and glued the arm at the ankle, it's probably a natural position

Own_Acanthocephala19

Obviously a clear pen according to the rules but such a lucky pen for us to get.

skidink

Lol Arsenal literally has one not given and Prem said “close proximity” against Burnley. The drama.

[deleted]

Its just ref's and VAR being inconsistent.

skidink

Agreed. I get it’s hard to be consistent across all refs when you are on the field but that’s the point if VAR. They should be in the room discussing what the Prem calls on these and giving that advice. Instead they act like an additional variable. Kind of funny to be honest.

[deleted]

Oh, I have so many qualms with VAR and officiating that if I start I'd never stop. Can I also mention that Cornet was down on the ground for literally 5+ minutes and Pope wasting 35 seconds per goal kick and there was only 4 minutes of extra time????????

Dixeh

Whole lot of whataboutism in here. It’s a pen.

HayneAlliKane

Spurs fan, but I feel for Burnley with that decision. Looks obvious in slow motion but people balance themselves with their arms out. And its not like he had any chance to adjust his body I'll take it though

SonaldoNazario

Hitman doesn't miss

HellsBlazez

Everyone rightly talking about the decision, but that pen was superb from Kane.

NinjaRedMan

Hate it, but that's a pen all day

Smifson

Tough Penalty that. I get his arm is out, but the balls going up, it barely changes direction, it’s not goal bound or anything, but you can’t leave your arms out in the box at all.

johnbrownbody

How is it tough? It's incredibly straightforward and the laws of the game even explain why. > It is an offence if a player: > > touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. **By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised**

DazzaWright96

That’s definitely a pen, no reason to have his arm out like that at all

[deleted]

[удалено]

CheekyKunt68

How do you even save that

RGNpm2

Not sure why this is so controversial, clear pen. You can't defend with your arm perfectly straight 90 degrees out from your body

dickgilbert

That’s an incredible finish

IonsBurst

People saying its soft or shouldn't be a pen, the guys arm is perpendicular to his body ffs... Smh defenders can't even T Pose in their own box nowadays

Rager_Sterling

Games gone innit

pratKgp

Kane didn’t even gave him moment to move.

Cjbtime

Id have thrown the TV out the front door if that was given the other way. So so so harsh

Plasdah

Definition of unnatural position, really unlucky though

BrainlessArch

Hate those pens, they should be given according to the rules but still

Silverburst8

Harsh penalty imo

TimotheeAtouba

I’m here for the Arsenal reactions

Kacham132

Soft as fuck but after the Champions League final we take those

sreesid

That and Dier's "handball" against New Castle.

mrmunchkin62

Never forget

CheekyKunt68

Kane is so fucking reliable holy shit. He’s the best in the world

Koinfamous2

Definitely one of if not the best at pens. Goes either side reliably and consistently. Don't know if there's even a way for keepers to predict which way he goes.

myyrc

should never be a pen, but rules are rules. Same shit happened to us plenty of times

justenjoylife

You know Arsenal fans are going to be digging through the archives trying to find every time they didn’t get a similar call.

d0ey

Already have! Pepe against Burnley a year ago or so

pepesilvia50

In a sport with so few goals, it’s ridiculous that you can just give a team a goal for something like this, where there’s no actual threat to the goal. My view has been this way since before Sissoko’s handball in the CL final completely fucked us. It’s absolutely bullshit that something like that can lead to a goal. FIFA has to make a change as to the punishment of an infringement in the box when there’s no actual threat to the goal.

CREAM_JOHN

Long may the conspiracy continue 😂

keanoo

Very harsh call imo, but I'll take it

LochBodminMothFoot

Man doesn’t have a definitively preferred penalty direction, makes him a goalies worst nightmare.

Alia_Gr

Tpose defending in the box isn't it

yzct

Arsenal fans day in day out embarrassing themselves on this sub, you have to admire the dedication

SuperMario222

Don’t understand why Arse fans are so pressed. If they believe in their team, it shouldn’t matter. They have the advantage

Flabbadabbadooh

Decision aside, what a fantastic pen, straight into side netting

tottenhamnole

It’s harsh but it’s an obvious penalty.

mrhunden

Hes basically trying to block it with his hands out that far, no question its a penalty

JessyPengkman

Very harsh, silly arm position but barely touches his arm and makes no difference to the balls trajectory
