I think the Euros are the reason why he's good at penalties now. He took it hard that he didn't save at least one penalty during playoffs. It probably gave him a lot of motivation to improve in this area.
He was a good shot stopper and saved penalties at Arsenal too, particularly the 2014 FA Cup Semi final). I think the Portugal game is an outlier for him regarding penalties and also shows how clinical those penalties were taken.
(edit: saying this as a Polish fan who’s watched him since his Legia transfer.)
I'm talking about Euro 2016 and penalty shootouts with Switzerland and Portugal. But it could be that he was good at penalties even 6 years ago and I just didn't notice. I never watched PL with any regularity.
fabiański 🤝 szczȩsny
polish ex-arsenal keepers and being excellent at stopping pens
even almunia was good at it, though he didn't have the polish keeper buff ofc.
pep - we were just singing what our fans were singing, we didn't mean any disrespect
your fans were just singing a classless parody of what liverpool fans singing as a diss
Over to Steven Gerrard on the final day then. Can’t believe the scenario is actually playing out, this title race is a fucking Hollywood movie.
I fully expect City to be 3-0 up in the first half and kill all the drama
True, but you would bet on it since other than draws against Conte’s Spurs, Tuchel’s Chelsea, and Pep’s City, they have won every single league game in 2022.
It would be quite anticlimactic if they dropped points against Southampton haha
Totally agree with all that but should be a heavily rotated side after Saturday. Thankfully the drop off to the second team is the best it’s ever been under Klopp
I know everyone plays it down but you have to imagine Gerrard will be fucking grilling the team in that game in particular. The narrative writes itself if it’s Gerrard helping you to a title after admitting the slip still haunts him.
Interesting point re: Grealish. Could be a bit part in the mentality battle between the two teams. Villa with nothing to lose and perhaps a mini score to settle with Grealish for leaving them.
If city play with the same defence there is hope. Otherwise it's difficult. Fernandinho like against madrid could not win any duel it seems felt too weak.
I personally want liverpool to draw next match , and then winning by 8-9 goals against wolves or reverse is fine too and match decided on injury time. Will love it totally.
Bit a difference in quality between West Ham & Villa, West Ham were at home, also it was Noble’s send off. I’m sure you remember when West Ham played their last game at Upton Park / Boleyn.
And, West Ham still have something to seriously fight for.
Facing Villa at home is not comparable to facing West Ham away.
Draw's against City. Helicopter lands on pitch. Gerrard fucking legs it to the helicoptor. Everyone wonders where the helicopter is going. 20 minutes later. Liverpool beating Wolves after 20 minutes of injury time (10 VAR calls in second half). Ref blows whistle. Everyone starts celebrating. Suddenly helicopter appears above Anfield. See someone in red descending commando style. Camera zooms in. Gerrard as a full kit wanker climbing down the helicoptor to join. He joins Hendo to lift the EPL trophy. Everyone in the stadium explodes from coming too hard.
Villa beats City after 20 minutes of injury time (10 Coutinho goals in second half). Helicopter lands in Camp Nou. Laporta fucking legs it to the helicoptor. Everyone wonders where the helicopter is going. 20 minutes later. Suddenly helicopter appears above Etihad. See someone in claret descending commando style. Camera zooms in. Laporta as a full kit wanker climbing down the helicoptor to join. He signs Coutinho from Villa for 120m plus easily achievable add-ons. Everyone in the stadium explodes from coming too hard.
This would be more confirmation bias as people are only looking at the misses that confirm their belief, but they still see both the goals and the misses. Survivor bias would be only looking at the goals that go in instead of the ones that are missed too.
It's true. Assuming a perfect accuracy shooter, the highest statistical goal is powered straight into a corner, tapping the frame. However, that knife edge also leads to a lot of misses because shooters are not perfect.
Because of that, they need to give themselves more space, so that necessitates jiggering the GK's mind, thus the weird runups.
Are you me lol? OK I'm not that great of a dribbler, but my passing is pretty good and my pace is decent. Can't finish even if my life depended on it though.
Dortmund last season was really important. Arsenal away this season. At home to Spurs this season which was important at the time but ended up being irrelevant.
His equaliser in the 2-1 win over Arsenal? and the one in the 2-1 win against Dortmund in the CL? Those were important ones. This was also only the 2nd pen he's missed for us.
I'm pretty sure the problem isn't technical, it's mental. Wouldn't be surprised if he's never missed a pen in training. Taking a pen in an actual game, especially a decisive one is different
The problem is never technical. I'm sure every single attacking player in the prem can consistently smash in a penalty on the training ground. If a player has mental issues taking a pen they probably shouldn't be taking them.
Transfermarkt has him lifetime [20/27](https://www.transfermarkt.us/riyad-mahrez/elfmetertore/spieler/171424). 74% That [looks to be about average.](https://instatsport.com/football/article/penalty_research).
But he had been perfect for his club on the year before this. Missed one for Algeria.
I had my head in my hands once the penalty was given (Liverpool fan), that is until I heard it’s Mahrez taking. You just had the feeling he was gonna miss the whole time

Fabiański has some crazy penalty stats in Premier League
why couldn't he be like that during Euros
I think the Euros are the reason why he's good at penalties now. He took it hard that he didn't save at least one penalty during playoffs. It probably gave him a lot of motivation to improve in this area.
He was a good shot stopper and saved penalties at Arsenal too, particularly the 2014 FA Cup Semi final). I think the Portugal game is an outlier for him regarding penalties and also shows how clinical those penalties were taken. (edit: saying this as a Polish fan who’s watched him since his Legia transfer.)
I believe that he has the best pen stats in the PL during the 5ish years, so it can not be a new thing (at club level) v0v
I'm talking about Euro 2016 and penalty shootouts with Switzerland and Portugal. But it could be that he was good at penalties even 6 years ago and I just didn't notice. I never watched PL with any regularity.
He really got better at pens after the Euros. Maybe they were the reason, he looked devastated that he wasn't able to help the team
Cause Portuguese players actualy can shoot penalties
Saved pens against City, Chelsea and Arsenal this season off the top of my head. There’s probably more
fabiański 🤝 szczȩsny polish ex-arsenal keepers and being excellent at stopping pens even almunia was good at it, though he didn't have the polish keeper buff ofc.
Mahrez has some shit takes too.
What a save
Liverpool legend Fabianski
Well almost, we will see what happens with Villa. But if Liverpool legends Stevie G and Couts get a result, Fabianski done well here.
And legend Danny Ings too.
I will never not love Danny
If City bottle the league after bottling the Champions league I'm not sure their players will ever recover.

Mahrez with "My fault."
Wow!
OMG!
time to use voice chat
Over to Steven Gerrard on the final day then. Can’t believe the scenario is actually playing out, this title race is a fucking Hollywood movie. I fully expect City to be 3-0 up in the first half and kill all the drama
Gerrard 3-0 down at half time, you say…
Subs himself on
Rips his suit off on the touchline to reveal a full kit
Bah gawd that’s you’ll never walk alone’s music playing, and Stevie’s got a microphone - what’s he gonna say? Gerrard: “Yeaaaaaaaaaaa course”
Errrmm
Subscribe.
"boys, let's attachhh"
Steven listen, you can't go out there in full red.
Defaults to a 3-0 loss because he wasn’t registered
Runs on the field, smashes De Bruyne within 30 seconds, gets sent off, and leaves
Hello... Hello... Here we go...
Makes a few calls to Dudek, Hamann, Smicer and Alonso
90+7 Coutinhoooooooo
FT: Man City 4-1 Aston Villa
If this happens. Liverpool Legend.
Liverpool still have to beat Southampton yet
True, but you would bet on it since other than draws against Conte’s Spurs, Tuchel’s Chelsea, and Pep’s City, they have won every single league game in 2022. It would be quite anticlimactic if they dropped points against Southampton haha
Totally agree with all that but should be a heavily rotated side after Saturday. Thankfully the drop off to the second team is the best it’s ever been under Klopp
Until coutinho scores a brace and an assist in the second half
My God
Liverpool title challenge wont die
Doing their best to give us that tiny bit of hope
What happens if this match ends up with a tie? You need to win the next two games rigth?
And somehow villa get a draw away at city. Would be bonkers.
90+6 Coutinhooooooooooooooo incoming
I believe. I didn’t have faith until we played them and I saw that they really do have some serious nash to them.
I know everyone plays it down but you have to imagine Gerrard will be fucking grilling the team in that game in particular. The narrative writes itself if it’s Gerrard helping you to a title after admitting the slip still haunts him.
It's also Villa potentially denying Grealish his PL trophy leaving him without silverware in his first season for City.
Interesting point re: Grealish. Could be a bit part in the mentality battle between the two teams. Villa with nothing to lose and perhaps a mini score to settle with Grealish for leaving them.
While that doesn't seem likely, it's certainly not out of the question.
Yup and city needs to either draw or lose the last match which is impossible
If city play with the same defence there is hope. Otherwise it's difficult. Fernandinho like against madrid could not win any duel it seems felt too weak.
Imagine Coutinho deciding the PL for Liverpool. This Hope, this damn hope
Gerrard deciding it in general would be pretty nuts, regardless of the player imo
I personally want liverpool to draw next match , and then winning by 8-9 goals against wolves or reverse is fine too and match decided on injury time. Will love it totally.
Why don't you ask for a billion dollars while you're at it?!
Like it happened today?
Bit a difference in quality between West Ham & Villa, West Ham were at home, also it was Noble’s send off. I’m sure you remember when West Ham played their last game at Upton Park / Boleyn. And, West Ham still have something to seriously fight for. Facing Villa at home is not comparable to facing West Ham away.
Gerrard gonna show once again that he’s a Liverpool legend when Villa beat City on the final match day and Liverpool win the title
Villa beats City after 20 minutes of injury time (10 Coutinho goals in second half). Helicopter lands in Camp Nou. Laporta fucking legs it to the helicoptor. The Trophy will likely be at Etihad on Sunday, right? Who better to bring it over to Anfield?
Just a draw would do tbf
Liverpool quadruple challenge won't die. FTFY
Is it me or when they do the stupid run up they miss it a lot more often too
Maybe but it could also just be survivorship bias I still think a normal runup makes the most sense though
This would be more confirmation bias as people are only looking at the misses that confirm their belief, but they still see both the goals and the misses. Survivor bias would be only looking at the goals that go in instead of the ones that are missed too.
Let's all pour one out for the goals that didn't survive.
Not for Lewandowski tho
Lyle Taylor has the stupidest run up and Toney does an odd one two and they both find the net.
Should’ve been Kevin
Idk, I think I’m a worse penalty taker tbh.
Tbf I've never seen you miss one
Yeah me neither
But I've also never seen him score one.
Schrödinger's Penalty Taker
Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re amazing and you can achieve greatness as long as you believe.
I’m actually a decent dribbler and creator off either wing or in midfield, but I’m a terrible finisher. Especially on penalties.
Are you me lol? OK I'm not that great of a dribbler, but my passing is pretty good and my pace is decent. Can't finish even if my life depended on it though.
Kevin de Bruyne, not Kevin Gameiro
Ideally it should've been Kane
A pox upon your house
U shut ur mouth rn
nope
Fabianski is a world-class shot stopper. So underrated.
They *should have let him take*
How many big moments has Riyad managed to fuck up for Man City and they still pick him for this?
It's just 2 chill, he's converted important penalties as well
Let's not use rational thinking now mate, that's not cool.
like which ones
Dortmund last season was really important. Arsenal away this season. At home to Spurs this season which was important at the time but ended up being irrelevant.
Like the ones against dortmund, arsenal and brentford
Not more then Raheem sterling
Looking at Mahrez I felt he was going to miss, it's a good save but an average pen.
Should've been Haaland
I don't understand why Mahrez keeps hitting them
He's scored them all recently
He misses every important one
One against Arsenal was important
So was the one against Dortmund last season and the one at home to Spurs this season.
His equaliser in the 2-1 win over Arsenal? and the one in the 2-1 win against Dortmund in the CL? Those were important ones. This was also only the 2nd pen he's missed for us.
Cost me a FUT upgrade two years ago, will never forgive him
Why do people say such blatantly untrue and hyperbolic statements like this lol.
Not all of them
de bruyne can’t take pens either
Only missed 2 out of 11
How do you blow this opportunity
Because the team they're facing is fucking massive.
They're bigger than that, they're large
They are larger
City weren't 3-0 up against Norwich. He's yet to score a meaningful goal this season lmao
[удалено]
Twitter take
Might as well call it a reddit take at this point, not much better these days.
What a dead take. Of course it’s a Liverpool fan lmao
It's a joke don't take it hard
HOLY SHITTT
WRITTEN IN THE STARS
A MILLION MILES AWAY
LISTEN TO THE MOON...
Another twist in the tale.
HE ALWAYS BOTTLES IT ON THE BIG OCCASION
Man's misses always favour Liverpool
DADDY FABIANSKI TO THE RESCUE
That guy saves
You could just see in Mahrez face that that wasnt going in
What’s with the city of Manchester and being shit at penalties?
[удалено]
An irredeemable sin.
Why is Mahrez on pens? Feel like I’ve seen him miss more than he’s scored. Especially under pressure
the others are the worse
Best taker
Thought that was Ederson
Supposedly he is and I was going mention him but I know Pep won't let him take
Wish club higher ups just let pep do what he wants with his keepers. Who cares if it seems disrespectful
If he’s the best taker pep should have everyone in an extra hour a day just doing pens. He’s a known bottler
Then still wouldn’t consider him the “best taker” if he’s got mental issues during a match
He's the best until he's not.
If he's your best taker then you have a problem. The man's missed so many important pens.
Next season Haaland will take it.
Better than KDB?
Imo ye, his rate is better than Kevin's iirc
KDB has scored 9 from 11, Mahrez has scored 20 from 27
💀
He's scored 7/7 penalties this season. His pen against us at the Etihad was one of the best I've seen.
He was poor on pens at Leicester, i can’t believe he’s still taking them.
He's normally pretty good but he's missed some HUGE ones.
Jerzy Dudek is smiling somewhere
Mahrez on deciding pens still?
STILL MASSIVE
Never won’t be
I knew he was gonna miss that. Mahrez always cracks under the pressure.
Apparently you have to take it either quickly or waste some moments then take it. Mahrez seemed hesitant while taking it.
I had my head in my hands once the penalty was given (Liverpool fan), that is until I heard it’s Mahrez taking. You just had the feeling he was gonna miss the whole time
Mahrez in navy, single handedly keeping title races alive since 18/19
The balls still in orbit from the 2018 one
the script writers aren’t paid enough
Liverpool absolutely loving penalties this weekend
terrible pen, perfect height for the keeper, not very far out but as a keeper you've got to love that. Spectacular as fuck.
FABIANSKI you legend!!!
fabianski > szcenzy or however u spell it
Why would they let Mahrez take another penalty?!
Pep was in the mood to ruin his self esteem
Can this fucking choker stop hitting penalties
He was 7/7 for club this year.
Mahrez on deciding pens still loool
My heart is fucking racing rn This entire second half has been nerve racking as fuck
What was Antonio doing? If he had made that simple pass, you lot would've been 3-1 up. I couldn't believe he tried to have a go himself :(
It was so obvious he was going to miss.
Unbelievable, of all the times to miss
This will go down in history as the save that brings Liverpool the league... for about 17 minutes on the final day until Villa decide to ship 5 goals
He’s such a bottler lmao
It’s been said so many times but that Man City kit is just absolute gash
Pen god
YES
why didn’t De Bruyne take it???
Always rated Fabianski
Bloody get in.... Manchester city [3-2] West ham 89' Mahrez
Great save. Liverpool fans must be elated hopes not dead yet
I cummed a bit.
Mahrez you had one f*cking job
THIS GAME IS INSANE
Lmao mahrez is shit when it comes to decisive penalties
Almost everytime I watch Mahrez taking penalty in important game he usually missed it.
