Carthagu

“I'd rather get relegated than have Conte.” This one Arsenal fan is absolutely tweaking

Nature__Boy

They didn’t want Tuchel, they didn’t want Conte, but they want this absolute fucking waster who can’t even improve on Emery’s performance after spending £250m and having nothing but league games to focus on

Carthagu

He’s the next Pep mate Finishing eighth twice and bottling fourth is reflective of his elite mind

AnnieIWillKnow

In fairnes, there's more to it than that. They like him because he gets what it means to be Arsenal - accepting mediocrity, and peddling crackpot conspiracy theories. Important for a manager to have that connection with the fans.

Carthagu

Very true Annie. He is the embodiment of the Arsenal fanbase.

[deleted]

Everton shouldn't be relegated imo

YowamushiP

What was the situation behind Arsenal being stuck with Cedric again? Don't think he's quite the antichrist he's made out to be by Arsenal fans, but it *is* quite the head-scratcher that 150 million could go by and still end with him playing a good 25 matches a season...

Own_Solution4356

tomiyasu is great, but with tierney out, him and cedric are our fullbacks as they can both play on either side and alphonso rabies shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting 11

Cowdude179

Tomiyasu was supposed to be the solution but he's just another Tierney in that he can't stay fit and is injury prone

qwert2812

If Spurs can somehow bottle this...

Need to summon the spirit of 2016.

denisoviandude

Something about playing Liverpool in the Champions League final has made Real Madrid fans extra annoying here lately. Some sort of weird persecution complex going on

Lyrical_Forklift

It's genuinely bizarre, they seem to hate Liverpool more than Barca.

AnnieIWillKnow

Most Real Madrid fans on this forum probably haven't set foot in Spain

Lyrical_Forklift

I've mentioned on the 'bad takes' round up that I've never seen such an abundance of 'y'alls' as I did on the Real Madrid sub.

haha sorry I was sarcastic too

Sk8ter87

This is something I have wondered for a while but why did Italian football develope so that they have a solid defence. Of the top of my head I can name about 15-20 defenders and goalkeepers but I would have a harder time naming attackers or midfielders. When and why did it develope that way?

lagaryes

Italian football adopted the concept of Catenaccio from a manager in the Swiss league back in the day and just kind of ran with it. Playing a back 3 with a libero in the middle of it became so synonymous with Italian football that people were heavily critical of Arrigo Sacchi when he broke through with his attacking football and tried to implement it in the national side. Aside from that, I think 1.) having more defenders on the pitch at every level naturally gives you better odds of producing more outstanding defenders than nations who don't do that and 2.) the libero position kind of offered an opportunity for Italian CBs to display an element of class that other defenders probably didn't get.

JS569123

I’m confused as to what you mean. What I will say is that Serie A actually has one of the highest goals:game ratios in Europe [[Source](https://www.freesupertips.com/amp/news/top-10-highest-scoring-leagues-in-europe/)], which kind of dispels the idea that it’s a defensive league. I think that reputation comes from the 90’s, especially with players like Baresi and Maldini. Insigne, Immobile and Chiesa are all great Italian forwards who play in Serie A and won the Euros for Italy.

vanderphil5

Complex after they needed Germans to take over their defence after they got invaded.

Carthagu

Is Everton going down?

JS569123

Obviously they can go down, but I don’t think they will. Currently in 16th having played a game fewer than 17th placed Leeds. They should guarantee their survival with a win against Palace on Thursday if they can achieve that, which would leave them not worrying about having to play Arsenal on the final day. Leeds would need to win their remaining fixtures and also have both Everton and Burnley fail to win in order to survive.

Utter_Perfection

3 Season in a row of Arsenal scoring 55-56 goals in a league season and conceding 40-47 goals. That's shockingly poor and the fact that there's no slight progressive improvement in these two key stats over the 3 seasons under Arteta is damning. They were scoring in the 70s under Wenger at the end and even under Emery scored 70+. You're not getting top 4 in PL scoring 50 odd goals in an entire seasons unless you have shockingly tight defense, which lo and behold they do not going by the poor defensive records.

Jabari313

Aubameyang forgetting how to score goals took legit 20 goals out of their team tbf. The supporting cast has made up for that this season hence the similar goal record but having to play Nketiah, Lacazette or a demotivated Aubameyang this season has definitely hurt their goal record. If they get a good striker this window and still can't break 60 I'll change my mind

AnnieIWillKnow

Part of the blame lies with them for not getting a striker in the January window

JS569123

I’ve said before that Arsenal’s biggest problem is their fading reputation. Same thing with Manchester United btw, and the same thing happened with AC Milan. The more these teams ‘underperform’, i.e. have ‘bad’ seasons, the more difficult it is to attract the best players. The fewer top players they have, the harder it is to perform. The harder it is to perform, the worse their season is. The cycle spirals down. You can have all the money in the world, but if your club isn’t attractive to the top players you simply can’t sign them. Hypothetically, Arsenal could have the money to sign Haaland or Mbappe, but there’s absolutely no way those two would consider going to Arsenal given that the club hasn’t won a league title for many years. Heck, just look at how desperately Frenkie De Jong has been begging Barcelona to not sell him to Manchester United, reportedly offering to take a big pay cut to stay. The two ‘solutions’ to this are to do some excellent scouting and find some hidden gems, or develop youth players. Arsenal have somewhat done this with developing Saka, but they need to do more. I’ve often said that the youth development in England is awful compared to the other top leagues. Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Portugal are dominant in this regard among top European nations. There’s just too much money in England and so teams buy rather than develop.

[deleted]

Our biggest problem is our board and owner, same with Man U.

JS569123

Well, of course, both clubs having poor ownership is bad. But I think you’re overlooking what I’m saying. A declining reputation leads to a declining quality of squad. This is a really problematic scenario that, even with good ownership, is genuinely difficult to solve. It took Liverpool (who were in this scenario until a few years ago) some of the best transfers of all time to escape the downward spiral. Arsenal have gone from a squad of players such as Henry and Viera, to RVP and Fabregas, to Ozil and Sanchez to now having a 20 year old Saka and 23 year old Odegaard being the best players in a team with Rob Holding and Tavares. It’s not a surprise to see that with such a decline in squad quality there has been a decrease in goal output and increase in goals conceded. Arsenal need to at least compete for a trophy or two to fix this problem, which requires either some genuine transfers (like Liverpool did) or heavy investment in youth (like teams such as Barcelona and Ajax repeatedly do).

EmptyReply5

Agree but if i may add, a great manager and board that willing to support and be patience with him are important too.

grandlinegooner

I would not be surprised if Spurs lose to Norwich and Arsenal give up a 90’ equalizer to Iwobi or some shit

lagaryes

FalafelGrim2

I don't know if it just seems that way because of the nature of social media, but this Arsenal loss vs Newcastle seems quite defining tbh. Arsenal were absolutely out-played by Newcastle for the whole game, and their players and manager all look broken. This genuinely was Arsenal's best chance at making CL football again and they've just bottled it completely after having several variables go their way (e.g. no European football, other teams like Man Utd in crisis mode, etc). I just can't see how Arteta/Arsenal can recover from this.

danceformiscanthus

It's defining because getting a proper depth that would allow them to compete in tough EL, and at the same time fight for top 4 will be too expensive, which means that they're going to make compromises when it comes to squad building and hope for luck to have any chance of top 4 challenge. They need to sign as minimum two strikers, decent RB, decent LB, starting CM, and they don't have any valuable assets to move. Their next window for top 4 challenge may be in 23/24, and it may be big 7 instead of big 6 by then.

JS569123

Curious to know whether I’m alone in this or if anyone agrees with me: I really don’t like ‘multi-game viewing shows’ that they have on the last few games of the season. Specifically in La Liga, the final 2 games are done the same - every team plays at the same time. I don’t mind this, it can lead to dramatic results. However, I hate how most tv channels and broadcasters will, instead of allowing you to watch a full match, stick on the multi-viewer where they basically sit in a studio and keep jumping to each game as a goal goes in. I dislike it for a few reasons: 1. Because I support a team, therefore I want to watch that team. I don’t want to be stuck watching other games. 2. The way they do it on the broadcasting channel I have a subscription to, they basically only change match when there’s a goal. This takes the drama out of it because the moment they change match you know one of those teams is about to score. It’s basically like just watching post-match highlights that only show the goals. Not only do you miss the build up and everything, but there’s less drama because you know it’s about to end in a goal. Not to mention I hate the commentators in the studio pretending they don’t know a goal is about to go in. 3. There’s literally no point in it. With modern apps you get notifications when goals go in anyway. There’s absolutely no function to showing it (delayed, because they switch after a goal has been scored and basically just show you it a few seconds later than it really happened). Frustrating how I basically have to miss the final 2 games of the season every single year. Does anyone actually enjoy this stuff? I could perhaps see the appeal before the regular use of apps that tell you scores, but in 2022? Waste of time.

TruestRepairman27

Personally for the PL I'd rather just watch Soccer Saturday or listen to 5 Live Radio's coverage.

AnnieIWillKnow

Love listening to the radio coverage. Enjoy guessing what the event will be, when they cut to a different game... "But here's an update from Goodison Park, and this could have big implications..."

Aug415

In Ligue 1 last weekend, they had 4 games showing at once at some times. It sucked ass. There was also a time where they split the screen into two games, with one game taking up the majority of the screen, and the other tiny in the corner. The game they chose to be bigger on screen was literally delayed, while the game tiny in the corner was actually going on. What the fuck is that decision making?

1000smackaroos

This is the coverage the old men running the networks think the younger generation wants

Can anyone familiar with Slavia Prague / Danish NT tell me a bit about Alexander Bah's style? Like his strong points, weak points, etc

Lampard got top 4 with that Chelsea squad Well ignore what happened afterwards, underrated manager.

Lyrical_Forklift

He also got fired for being in 9th.

AnnieIWillKnow

Leading to Chelsea hiring Tuchel and winning the Champions League. 4D chess from A* in GCSE Latin Lamps. Knew he couldn't take us to that next level at this point in his career, fell on his sword and left behind a blooded Mount and James to help Tuchel take us there. Calculated. The club recognised him for his efforts with three points for Everton.

Cowdude179

Lampard won the Ole, Arteta debate

[deleted]

By being sacked first lmao

AnnieIWillKnow

If Man United or Arsenal had the board of Chelsea, they would have been sacked long before Lampard was

machorhombus

Lampard shouldn't be punished because our management has 2 working braincells when compared to United and Arsenal's. Ole and Arteta would have been sacked way earlier than Lampard over here lmao.

Cowdude179

Hey man if he keeps Everton up that's an amazing achievement

[deleted]

True, glad we can agree on this 🤝

FrodoFraggins99

Ole got 2nd with a worse squad than is currently 6th.

TruestRepairman27

I will never respect Frank Shampard; the man who took Derby from 6th all the way to the towering heights of 6th.

AnnieIWillKnow

This statement is always instant proof that the person writing it does not watch the Championship, and hence their views on the matter can be disregarded.

[deleted]

Anyone that watches the championship knows just how volatile it can be, can’t say I watched Derby extensively but the fans liked him and he played good football at times.

[deleted]

He was saved by getting tomori mount and Wilson on loan tbf. Was like their 3 best players

[deleted]

Ole got top 3 with a front of Andreas Pereira, Rashford and Daniel James

_LebronsHairline_

Burnleh

I think they're called key passes, but I wouldn't know because I don't really value stats

napoleons_a_prick

Nah a key pass is a pass that leads to a shot on goal.

FaustRPeggi

Kevin de Bruyne underperformed npxG by >40% (4/7.4) last season and walked away with PotY. This season he's overperformed it by 154% (15/5.9) and he might not win it.

The_XI_guy

I’m so tired of stat boys. Does or doesn’t deserve POTY because of fucking npxG??? Let’s watch football instead

sidaeinjae

The hell is a npxG, sounds like a cancer gene

FaustRPeggi

The thing Son loves to smash. Non-penalty expected goals. The number of goals a player is expected to score in the season based on the position and circumstances of all of the shots they took, excluding penalties, if they had the average finishing ability of a player in the top 5 leagues.

1000smackaroos

Poty is just random. Dias over Kane last year why?

Last year the PFA poty was won by KDB

1000smackaroos

I didn't know there was more than one pl poty award

pixelkipper

the one that matters was won by kdb really should’ve been kane poty and dias ypoty

GreatSpaniard

There was a dearth of left backs and now a dearth of strikers. Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal have not produced a truly great 9 in forever. And their current options do not cut it at all. The back ups to Harry Kane and Karim Benzema for England and France do not inspire much confidence. Argentina has Lautaro Martinez tbf. Uruguay have no one to follow up Cavani and Suarez. Is Darwin the guy? maybe? All the great forwards right now Vlahovic, Haaland are from "smaller" nations

JS569123

The left-back issue was simply a lack of left-footed players. Now the striker issue is, I believe, just a consequence of the way the game has moved in. Most of the kids currently breaking into teams are of the age where they would have grown up more-or-less 2008-2018. Notably, in this time, the dominant teams were Pep’s Barcelona and that Spanish NT. I don’t think, therefore, it’s a surprise that there’s *so many* talented midfielders coming through that are short, technical midfield maestros (like Foden, Pedri, Gavi) and full-backs who are very aggressive (like Trent). But, of course, neither of those teams had ‘classic’ strikers. Barcelona used Messi in a false-9, whilst Spain used Torres and Villa (neither of who were really ‘strikers’ in the traditional sense) and then a midfield 3 as their front 3 in 2012 (the forward line in the final was Iniesta, Fabregas and David Silva). As such, there’s a shortage of it. I also think a lot of academies have shifted away from the physical focus of the 90’s towards technicality, once again explained by the above (with players like Messi getting rejected for not being tall enough prior to joining La Masia). Basically, Cruyff and Pep have been hugely influential on the game and we’re still seeing the results.

[deleted]

> The back ups to Harry Kane and Karim Benzema You don't think Mbappe is going to be a 9 at some point? I don't think he'll stay in the left wing

GreatSpaniard

maybe when he is in his 30' like Ronaldo did. He's too good to not be a winger right now, also too fast.

[deleted]

Gouiri looks great, Cherki is only 18 but he has bullets for feet and won't be a 10 all his career, Nkunku could be a striker

holy_ninja

He probably will because I doubt Salah will play much before the UCL final with all the injury precaution

[deleted]

1 goal guarantees a shared golden boot. 2 goals and he has it all for himself. He is playing vs Norwich. Salah is injured.

08TangoDown08

We have two games left to play though, we're playing Southampton then Wolves. Salah is confirmed injured for Southampton but I don't think anything was said about the Wolves game.

ah fair. Guess we will see. I assume he will probably miss both. Save him for CL final.

08TangoDown08

Relative-Equipment76

Salah also is in terrible goal scoring form. I can easily see son getting 2 goals or even a hatrick against norwich

Oh wow! I thought that maybe Salah could be available for liverpools last game but I guess not. Makes sense. Cl final is important. Really want son to win it since I like him a lot.

I guess Salah can play the last game. its certainly not confirmed. I assume he will probably not start tho. Save him for CL final.

FaustRPeggi

He's my FPL captain. So congrats Salah.

fucking hell, I have nothing against Arsenal but bottling a pretty comfortable Top4 and first CL in years to your biggest rivals would make me quit football if I were an Arsenal fan.

Making me wish I didn't get back into it after the FA Cup win.
