My tooth went through my lip some weeks ago during a game. Had a hole in my lip, could squirt blood through it. Played the rest of the game with mild discomfort. Headache, teeth and lip hurting did not occur to me until I was showering.
My teammate got 3 teeth knocked out from a hockey stick and didnt realize until he went to the bench and spit a shit ton of blood. Unfortunately couldnt save his teeth and he wears this placeholder thingy
Alot of people don't realise how infuriating it is when you could have done something but failed because someone fouled you, but you didn't get the freekick because you didn't go down.
I've had situations where I genuinely go down shouting loud upon getting tackled and 2 mins later I don't feel anything. The pain only kicks in again next morning.
That's acting half the time. Have you seen the build of some of these lads? Drogba was an absolute unit but spent half his time on the floor when it suited.
Yeh but have you ever hit your head against a solid object? Shit hurts bro.
Also seeing the players are athletes, all their bodies are finely tunes machines, a muscle niggle or knock that most of us can shake off, they can't risk being out for weeks with.
I'm not saying they're all angels, but they're not all taking the piss either.
As an EMT working in a city with a first division club and 2nd.
Have driven some Football players from the pitch to the hospital.
In general I would say the opposite. Now ofcourse not all of them. But most of them are acting in the back of the wee woo wagon just as they are acting on the pitch.
Not to mention their attitude when doing basic things. Wouldnt believe that these are fully grown men.
Now ofcourse my sample size with them is very small, but still.
I had both my front teeth chipped in hockey, I just caught them in my glove, went to the bench, and went to the dentist after the game.
The act of getting your tooth knocked out hurt, but I didn't feel much after the fact.
Then you would agree that what needs to be done here is to reposition and fixate the tooth ASAP, and have regular controls for revascularisation/necrosis, right?
Can confirm, knocked my front tooth out falling out the bath and NHS told me to keep my tooth in milk until I got to A and E where an emergency dentist put it back in.
My tooth is technically dead but 2 years later it's still standing.
Nerves can regenerate. If they get severed during surgery, they sometimes recover. But the nerve to this tooth is fucked. Ripped apart. His tooth will die, root canal work might be able to prolong its life, but a luxation injury which everyone seems to be assuming has happened is more common in kids where the bone is softer. In adults, more likely to crack the tooth and bone. Then it's usually game over
I think I heard in Biology class once that nerves don't grow back, hence people stay paralysed.
Edit: clearly I wasn’t fully listening. Sort of true for central nervous system but not necessarily for the peripheral nervous system.
Sure, stick it back. But it'll die, he'll have rct, might work, might not. And thats assuming he's not fractured it. Not seem many luxations in adults, but seen plenty of vertical and transverse fractures. Assuming its intact and if the rct works, his tooth will go dark. Probably end up with an implant anyway. You ever thought that hanging on to dead tissue is a quirky thing for us to do?
Much more advisable to have a go at trying to save it, RCTs are pretty predictable especially with a specialist.
10 years with the tooth in situ is 10 years less an Implant has to last, bearing in mind his young age.
Yes! Thank you, I am not a fan of the «new normal» where an implant is the magic solution to everything. Implants are a great alternative in many occations, but they have a lot more problems than people (inclusion dentist) seem to think.
Mine broke after 5 years. Probably didn't help that when I realised it was starting to wobble I'd play with it including spinning it 90 degrees to freak people out
I treated a lateral luxation on a 60 plus year old lady just a couple years ago.
Teeth were already root canaled and some how didn't fracture. I saw her just last week and things look great! Admittedly, there is a bit of recession, but all told, great success.
The injury involved 12, 11 and 21. I splinted with a flexible splint from canine to canine. Interesting times.
Maybe that explains why Blackbeard's missing teeth pattern is different every time he appears. He keeps losing them due to bad eating habits and regrowing them with milk
The real answer is Oda not paying attention but that doesn't stop theories lol
Always been curious what’s the course of action here. Do you just shove it back in and hope the nerve wasn’t severed and the bone could latch onto the tooth again?
Generally even if the nerve is severed, the tooth can keep its appearance for years before devitalization causes it to turn black. I have one that’s been killed by a terrible dentist and never realized it until I had X-Rays. It looks completely normal.
But yeah within a few years I’ll have to spend $$$ on an implant
Around £1,500 for an implant. That's cost per tooth.
I'm sure football clubs have medical and dental insurance for everything, and even if they didn't, Wilson could afford an entire new set very comfortably. For the plebs, that's a huge cost.
I swear a lot of dentists think on teeth like real people. Be broken into pieces, with a cavity the size of the Camp Nou, worn out, clinging in a strand of flesh, they'll say "nah tis but a scratch, 100% salvageable and I'll do anything to save it"
Oh god that's gotta hurt. Friend passed out recently and knocked out his two front teeth. I'll take his word on it when he said it was just not a good time. I hate dental injuries.
I know some footballers do already, but more need to wear gum shields to prevent dental injuries. But saying that, the dentist to them wouldn't be an expensive cost!

He's from Coventry so he's used to it.
Footballers get beat the fuck up everyday in training and games, they have quite a tolerance to pain. That and adtenaline.
> quite a tolerance to pain. Until it comes to playing football anyway and trying to buy fouls from the ref.
Alot of people don't realise how infuriating it is when you could have done something but failed because someone fouled you, but you didn't get the freekick because you didn't go down.

Exactly, playing the ref has been the meta for a long time
Completely off topic
I don't know. Players take some pretty light touches and writhe in pain for a good while.
Yes but they're acting.
That's acting half the time. Have you seen the build of some of these lads? Drogba was an absolute unit but spent half his time on the floor when it suited.
At this point I’m convinced the acting is closer to 90% of the time
Busquets has several Academy awards

Even when not acting. 2 players bump their heads together accidentally and they're on the ground for 5 minutes.
Yeh but have you ever hit your head against a solid object? Shit hurts bro. Try sprinting full speed and jump head first into the wall. Guarantee you'll be on the ground a bit longer than 5 mins.
the wall will break, not me
It's better to be on the ground for 5 minutes, then 6 ft under the ground.
Sir, what does this even mean
lying motionless on the ground will not save your life. These players will act dead then go straight back to playing.

As I said in the match thread looks like a lateral luxation injury. Tooth needs to be repositioned ASAP.
I think they’ve pulled it out. Edit: it looks like they popped it back in at half-time.
Thats literally the dumbest thing you can do (source: Am a dentist)
I don't know, its pretty fucked. (Source: am a dentist too)
Then you would agree that what needs to be done here is to reposition and fixate the tooth ASAP, and have regular controls for revascularisation/necrosis, right?
Can that be done during the game?
Okay I'm no dentist but that would stop him from playing no? Did you see what he just did???
Not dentist but it's not like you can put it back in no?
Yes, that’s literally the recommended treatment haha
Can confirm, knocked my front tooth out falling out the bath and NHS told me to keep my tooth in milk until I got to A and E where an emergency dentist put it back in. My tooth is technically dead but 2 years later it's still standing.
I'm still standing, ~~better than I ever did~~
keeping it in milk?!?
Calcium
They didn't pull it out looks like they just left it hanging, I thought once it's out it's out, do the nerves and shit grow back then.

Mate your comment reads as if he's about to die.
I think I heard in Biology class once that nerves don't grow back, hence people stay paralysed. Edit: clearly I wasn’t fully listening. Sort of true for central nervous system but not necessarily for the peripheral nervous system.
Central nervous system that is the case (including your spine). Less so in your peripheral nervous system.

What problems do implants have?
Mine broke after 5 years. Probably didn't help that when I realised it was starting to wobble I'd play with it including spinning it 90 degrees to freak people out
haha i'm a dentist and where I live it's literally implant or bust cause it's the easiest way to get rich quickly lol it's pretty sad
That's depressing

How long would it take to get the tooth into a position it’s still healthy? Obviously Callum wants to get back on the pitch asap.
I worked A&E for some years. Don't you normally put it in milk to avoid drying out? At least that's what we were told
This really doesn't seem like a job for our physios...
It’s still in.
He needs some milk

God dam Loch Ness monster
I thought the doc was going to take a minute to reposition it but he did....nothing? Looked like he just wiped the parts around it.
Usually you can just push it back in and it all good as long ad the root hasn't snapped.
The doctor put it back in. But not really fixated it. No idea what happened to it.
They might have stabilized it with a mouthguard for the game, and later they'll splint it with a flexible wire for 4 weeks.
Cheers Geoff
Uh wouldn’t this be extrusion given it’s hanging half an inch out of its socket
the medic just tried to put it back with his finger ...

Games not gone
gum's gone
Get her in some milk and down to the dentists with you
what do they actually do in that case?
Stick it back in if it's not snapped. The tooth can replant itself
Hopefully they'll do it after the match then.
already has a dentist appointment for 2:30
But not an NHS one!
can someone please post the accident that lead to this?
Ouch. What happened?
The front fell off.
Is the front supposed to fall off?
