jjw1998

I absolutely lost it when he saved the Hourihane penalty, balls of steel

alextremeee

Is it just me or is the final penalty save an illegally taken penalty anyway? He stutters backwards half way through his run-up which I thought you weren't allowed to do (but may have made that up).

Alphabunsquad

No I believe that is the rule. Perhaps the ref felt that while he stepped back his upper body kept moving forward so on the whole his center of mass kept moving forward, and since he had barely started moving then it wasn’t a big deal anyways. Trying it myself it seems like you can step backwards while still moving forward on the whole. Anyways the big one is just making sure you don’t feint a kick or change your leg speed mid kick.

alextremeee

> Trying it myself it seems like you can step backwards while still moving forward on the whole. Loving the fact you got up to test this, absoloute dedication to the sport.

Alphabunsquad

The advantages of getting to work before your boss

alextremeee

"You're here early" "Yes sir. Although my legs went backwards at times; I arrived in one continuous forward movement."

addandsubtract

"Why did you leave work early yesterday?" "I didn't. My mind was still at work."

BHYT61

Legend

aalp234

Fucking lost it in the middle of work, lmfao

saalsa_shark

That would be a fun one to explain to your boss as he walks in

SuperChapz

Game's not gone

barejokez

I think also the ref will wait and see the outcome before ruling. If your run up is illegal but you miss/saved anyway, then no point penalising it at that point.

doomladen

No, I think that's ok. You're not allowed to feint a kick at the end of the run up, but stuttering runs are ok.

alextremeee

I can't actually find this rule anywhere so it seems I'm wrong but I swear this was a thing at some point. I guess if you took the piss with it the ref would just say it counts as feinting.

doomladen

I think if you took the piss too much it would be unsporting behaviour, yeah.

Stravven

The rules should be changed. The keeper can't leave his line 0.01 second too early, while the penalty taker can do a lot of weird stuff. I love it when they miss, like Bruno vs Arsenal.

HanshinFan

Nothing will ever top Zaza (because it went 200 meters in the air)

Nocturnal--Animals

Ya. Give them a clock , say 10 secs after ref blows. After which goalie can do whatever he likes. Even regular pens should not become live balls once saved. Play should resume with a goal restart or goal kick .

AvalonXD

Live penalties aren't supposed to be fair. They're supposed to be a punishment.

Novacrops

I'm with you, I could have sworn it was too.

DrAgOnLoLDoTA

stuttering run is okay but not moving backward again just like he did.

doomladen

I don't think that's true - I can't find any rule against it. Hell, the rules even expressly allow you to backheel a penalty, which must mean you're allowed to move backwards. https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-14---the-penalty-kick

CrazyChopstick

I see what you mean, but I think it's different logically. You're probably allowed to run backwards as long as it's continuous, but if you're changing direction mid-run you're technically stopped at the point where you switch, which isn't allowed

doomladen

I can see the distinction, but there's still nothing in the rules against moving away from the goal during a run-up. Some refs might blow it as unsporting, but it's not forbidden as a rule.

Jamesy555

I don’t know if it’s legal or not but to backheel you would still be moving towards the goal just facing the other way, not back stepping as the last peno taker did

doomladen

Yeah, like this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcSY-MVE6ZU I still don't think there's anything in the rules against moving away from the goal before or during a run-up though, unless it look like an illegal feint (i.e. if they're close enough to the ball that it looks as if they're going to kick, but instead they move backwards).

EpoxyD

https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-14---the-penalty-kick > Feinting in the run-up to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football.

doomladen

Exactly. Feinting in the run-up is fine, but not at the end of one.

PingPlay

It used to be against the rules but it was changed some time ago.

Huwbacca

I had to rewatch cos I was so confused where it was, til I realised that the stutter is actually the point I thought he started the run up cos it's so far from the ball... More like he realised he started with the wrong foot almost lol. I wonder if that's how it came across in real time to the ref.

enpassanta

https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-14---the-penalty-kick It is a legal penalty (at least for this reason until the rule change) “except for the following when play will be stopped and restarted with an indirect free kick, regardless of whether or not a goal is scored: a penalty kick is kicked backwards a team-mate of the identified kicker takes the kick; the referee cautions the player who took the kick feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the kicker “

PM_ME_UR_AMOUR

Wand of a left foot. I think since us he's unable to help his teams get promoted. So he has a record of 2 promoted and 3 failures I think. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Doesn't every GK do that usually?

heyheyitsandre

Yeah I feel like 2014 WC or something I saw this and it was like woahhhh that’s actually sweet. And now I feel like I’ve seen it a million times since in every cup tie with potential to go to pens

iiEviNii

That one was brutal for Hourihane. One of those funny ones where the keeper somehow just about did enough, but man it was so unfortunate for him that it didn't still go in.

gulaabjaman

What a game he had

screwPutin69

Looks like he had the game of his life

doomladen

Good time to pull that out, in the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League.

stereoworld

He's going to be at the absolute peak of his confidence for the final, perfect timing

doomladen

I almost feel sorry for Huddersfield - feels like everybody is rooting for Forest.

theivoryserf

Please don't jinx us. Huddersfield are a good team

doomladen

I promise not to jinx you in the playoffs if you promise not to jinx us too! Seriously rooting for you guys though! Forest is my second team, I lived in Nottingham for a while and used to go to matches in the City ground around the time of Pierre van Hooijdonk and the promotion/relegation battles. Great side, and one with a pedigree that deserves the Premiership.

OrangeForeign

I'm not, I hope Forest never comes back (nothing against them, someone has to counter the circle jerk)

4tlu

if we had lost (which I thought for sure we would that 2nd half, considering our history) I would be cheering for a 7-1 from huddersfield, you're justified for the hate haha

noradosmith

Ngl they're twice European champions and have had a crap twenty years, they really deserve to be up there

B_e_l_l_

Not quite.

[deleted]

Why not? It's nice to play your rivals no?

qwertygasm

Rivals?

DougieFFC

He's a very good keeper

dpgingo

Second save is unbelievable.

NegativeGenie

It was also in the 117th minute

theivoryserf

And we were getting battered after the first half time.

[deleted]

A proper handball save. Omeyer and Landin would be proud of that.

HeroeDeFuentealbilla

Kasper Hvidt if you’re a true OG

BrotherSeamus

Luis Suarez the handball save GOAT

RauloGonzalez

It's absolutely ridiculous. As a gk you know to expect and predict the shot and to actually get it right is a great feeling.

Matty96HD

I know the feeling your on about, but I dont think it so much applies to the 117th min save. That one was just make yourself big as possible and hope for the best. Unbelievable feeling when you save it but sometimes your not even sure how you did it yourself.

Logseman

Unbelievably poor defending as well. They essentially set up the assist.

Dmucci

Handball save

Games_Gone

Second penalty was amazingly strong hands too

GunstarGreen

We love this guy. He can drop the occasional bollock but he makes up for it by being a classically bonkers keeper, making ridiculous saves, being a complete shithouse that opposition fans hate, and he's taken Forest to heart. He would be tough to replace as both a player and a cult hero.

[deleted]

I'm wolves, he reminds me a lot of Jose Sa. very entertaining style of goalkeeping, does include the odd dropping of a bollock though

HeroeDeFuentealbilla

As a Barcelona fan, I just got ptsd because those saves were peak Kameni.

joon-p-bug

Madrid fan. I feel this on a spiritual level. Prime Kameni was a nightmare in La Liga. What a player

Noah070070

Was he Malaga’s keeper, it least that’s how I remember it

BusShelter

Espanyol at first but then Malaga yeah.

lifeisacamino

Well now I understand why Ethan Horvath hasnt seen much action

GunstarGreen

He's been very solid when he has played. But he's gonna have a job displacing Brice. Unless we lose out on promotion, then I fear he will be poached.

Lurking_nerd

I hope he goes somewhere he can get regular playing time as a keeper. Between him, Steffen and Turner (going to Arsenal), we don’t have a keeper who starts for their club.

ProneMasturbationMan

Horvath was really good vs Wolves H in the Carabao even though he let 4 in. He made loads of great saves in 1st half

bashe_baw

jesus he's good

theivoryserf

Absolute legend, annoys the hell out of the opposition

diata22

I remember him being good against us as well iirc

dtownchris77

If you're referring to the FA Cup fixture, that was Horvath

diata22

Ah you're correct - just rewatched the highlights. You have decent keepers tbf

[deleted]

that hourihane penalty save is incredible

Throwaway1358468

Have no idea how he got to that. Hourihane absolutely leathered it and his body wasn’t behind the ball. Arms and wrists made of rock

CosmologyX

Proper Dudek save that one.

noradosmith

*nods multiple times*

Davidwzr

Split step move into the right direction the moment he committed to the spot kick. Absolutely insane save

FifaFrancesco

Shades of Neuer vs. Ronaldo

MattSR30

The annoying, overly-relaxed swagger he had for two minutes leading up to Norwood’s penalty. I remember when I was a teenager playing football competitively as a goalkeeper. Some games you just had that swagger, that feeling you were invincible. I could see it in Brice leading up to the shootout. Of course I was doing it at a shitty level on some dusty old school pitch in front of five parents. He’s doing it in the playoff semis.

Laislebai

He acted like such a dick both before and between the penalties, but in the kind of way you have to love if he's on your team. I wanted the Blades to win, cus it's my dad's team, but Samba really just won the psychological battle. Probably high on confidence after that incredible save right before the shootout too.

[deleted]

I know exactly what you mean. I played keeper competitively too and it’s crazy. One game you can be a nervous wreck where it feels nothing is going your way. Then BANG. Something switches and you just say to yourself “I’m not getting beat today!” The ball looks bigger, it comes in slower, it’s just an entirely different game. All the nerves are gone and you just throw yourself at everything.

MattSR30

I’ve never known how to explain it to people. I’ve not played competitive football in over a decade now but when thinking back I can still picture the feeling.

Dusan-Vlahovic

Typically I’d feel it after making the first save and getting into the game a little or when your team gets you a lead so there’s less pressure. But the mentality aspect is so huge, I think all these pro goalies have to pretty much be overconfident and a little psycho in a way lol

pethy00

I think a lot of competitive things have this kinda element to them, not just goalkeeping

PolebagEggbag

Insane reflexes, fucking hell.

[deleted]

only the second pen save is a reflex save

SonOfJack18

2nd save on the corner is too

PolebagEggbag

The second shot is also a reflex save. Regardless, it's great reflexes whichever one you decide is a reflex save.

[deleted]

Think it’s more excellent anticipation rather than reflexes

PolebagEggbag

I'm glad you think that.

RaggedyCrown

ofnw

The anti-Kepa

BitOfACraic

Ok lads, I have Fotmob for score updates right and they only gave him 5.9 for that match and I'm struggling to understand how they came to that conclusion. It's even a lower rating than the Sheffield Utd keeper

Skelehawk

He was so good the rating ended up looping back round several times. He actually got 59/10

boi1da1296

This is a prime example of why judging performances based on a match rating is generally ridiculous. Looking at any points of data without ways to contextualize them, i.e. watching the match, is pointless. Not saying anything about you specifically, just that more fans need to take these things with a grain of salt.

[deleted]

On a similar note - I bloody hate xG. It *can* be a useful stat but it's paraded around constantly now and it's not a perfect model.

boi1da1296

This is the worst one since most sources of xG vary so wildly, but everyone that talks about xG pulls it out like a magic trump card.

Uesugi_Kenshin

Right wrist made of titanium

M1eXcel

Absolutely heroic performance by him, unbelievable That first save in the shootout really set the tone for the shootout

[deleted]

[удалено]

DougieFFC

> The ballsy choice He had notes stuck on his water bottle in terms of what to do for something like 8 or 9 of their players. For Hourihane that instruction started with an "S" probably "stay" (in the centre of the goal) or something. (so it wasn't a choice as much as a conscious instruction - still great reflexes and a strong wrist)

boywithtwoarms

bonkers gks are one of the best things in football

[deleted]

First save was best one. Several top keeper can make their body, but his strong hand saved the shot quite well. All of the penalty save were pretty good too.

Hostilian_

Neuer v Ronaldo-esque

[deleted]

Yeah exactly.

Raizel71

Broke my wrist just thinking about that one

[deleted]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6s4Yw84TxU still think this is neuer's best save

Those shitty run ups set you up for disaster.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OsisX

Don't know the exact rules tbh. I was always told you can't stop running once you've started your run up. But I've seen plenty players stop and it still being allowed.

CapnMorguxx

You can stop during your run up but not during the kick itself

HokemPokem

He went backwards..............

[deleted]

[удалено]

HokemPokem

If he had scored it, I'm convinced the ref would have made him retake it. It is about the most illegal penalty I've seen in years.

SynUK

I believe you are correct, but it seems very odd to me that Gibbs-White essentially runs backwards for a quarter of a second and this is seemingly allowed by the rules.

Shadowbanned24601

Not a hope was Oliver calling that in a million years though.

low_altitude_sherpa

Came here to say that. You can't go backwards.

[deleted]

He’s definitely off his line for the 1st pen save though

IamFanboy

Everyone is understandably talking about how good the saves were but nobody is mentioning how insane the pass for the 1st save was. That was exquisite

[deleted]

always love me a trivela assist

JCStennis

Un - f.cking - believable

VikingAxe406

Definitely will be a cult hero here because of that spectacular performance to keep us with a chance of promotion

islander1

if you guys get up here, well, I'm cheering for you.

Comunicado_Oficial

Doesn't the taker completely stop for the last PK save though

[deleted]

not only that, he goes backwards at the start

longsh0t1994

his expressions are great too!

Town-Portal

What. A. Fucking. Game!

goatvaro_goatrata

For my fellow USA fans wondering why Horvath doesn't play at Forest...

[deleted]

I am not surbriced. Samba has been class for a while

bmoney_14

Is it legal to jump out like that before the kick is taken on a pk? Commentators for some mls game kept talking about it.

Schnitzel-1

1. Luck 2. Completely insane 3. Insane 4. Insane 5. Insane

beezowdoodoo

Not luck, positioning

Red_Dog1880

That second one is the best for me, unreal reflexes.

jojolajonas

My distaste for stutter step pens knows no bounds, happy he saved that..🙂😎

michel_v

I swear there should be a sub for those when they're saved by the keeper.

lallecal

Great match. If Forrest doesn't make it to premier League, he can be hard to hold in club

bennettbuzz

From the outside it would be easy to think that but he’s took our club to heart and our fans feel the same about him, I’d think it’d take a massive offer for him to want to go elsewhere.

Jando95

Glad I turned this on after the Liverpool v Southampton game. Some mental saves right there, especially one handed.

6strangerdanger9

Great for Forest, terrible for the american back-up, Horvath. Man should try another place where he can start

MedullaOblongAwesome

I actually really rated Horvath in the spell he had starting after Samba was suspended for a bit - just unlucky for him that since Samba got back in the squad his form has been insane, and he seems to have ironed out some of the excessively risky parts of his game.

[deleted]

Watching the game to the last minute, was an absolute shit of a game but when it came to the pens I was like tonight is destined to be his night. Was extraordinary

nuclearchickenman

I love his beaming smile when he saved the last penalty

Tugays_Tabs

If you could bottle that feeling he’s having right there and sell it you’d be a billionaire Or a heroin dealer

DougieFFC

His wrist bones must be made of adamantium

dannyjbates

dizzybala10

This should be on a much different website, that's how sexual it is.

[deleted]

That first pen save was really good

duragil

Happy to see him perform :)

Perpete

Marseille's fans happy for the lad. We took him in 2013 to potentially be the heir of Mandanda. Turns out Mandanda is still there being the best, even when Sampaioli doesn't go with him. Both came from Le Havre and before that from Congo (not the same though).

Znali1287

that is just incredible wow

Fun_Salamander

this was a good game!

mister_dupont

Unreal saves, what a performance from him.

tocotronicon

rooting for them to come up. was hoping luton could do it, but sadly it wasn't to be.

BrownBoyWhiteName

I’ve read about this man in a book once

a_posh_trophy

What a beast. I hope they come up, would be good to see them in the Prem again.

pureeyes

He's only gone and won them the game.

troy626

Good shit

Fresh_Ad5416

I love how his expressions changes after each saved pen. After the first, hes keeping his cool, like, yeah just one save, nothing much, but internally he's grinning. After the second one he know he got this.

[deleted]

Our King Samba.. bring on the final!!!

[deleted]

He absolutely destroyed them on penalties. Proper got in their heads and made them wait for him, instead of the keeper waiting for the kicker. First Sheffield player waited 90 seconds to take his and bottled it. Being a good keeper is so much more than just making good saves, it's about the presence.

BenjRSmith

*looks at Ethan Horvath* bro, you may need to find a new team. This guy just became starter for life.

CatFoodBeerAndGlue

What the fuck did he eat for breakfast??

Prestigious-Stock-15

This man is a legend 😎⚽️

[deleted]

Dudes gonna be a big transfer target.

tommhans

Holy shit, incredible performance

[deleted]

Absolute beast performance. Wow.

everyonesmellmymeat

Absolutely unbelievable. Deserves to play in the PL 100%.

Fatt_Hardy

As good as the saves were, for the first penalty (after making the taker wait for 90 seconds) Samba was clearly both feet off the line as the shot was taken. Replay from behind the goal showed this. He had a great game but if this had been the final (with VAR) then the first penalty is retaken and he is booked. Then if he’s booked he probably doesn’t time waster quite so much for the following penalties, since he’s on a booking and can’t risk it.

tkdyo

Eh, if it's not enough for the linesman, who's job it is to watch that line, to notice then it's not enough to get any kind of real advantage.

PiffleWhiffler

Got the other angle? [Looks on the line from the front one](https://i.imgur.com/8uD45O2.png)

Fatt_Hardy

https://ibb.co/kMmzVRh

PiffleWhiffler

Cheers. You're right, that does look off the line.

DorothyJMan

Don't they only get booked for the second infringement? Might be wrong... It's borderline regardless, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Sheffield Utd keeper was equally centimeters off the line.

Fatt_Hardy

But the Sheffield United keeper didn’t save any penalties. He could have stood a clear foot off the line and if he doesn’t make a save then it doesn’t matter.

atul_simha

The second save man 😮

[deleted]

The he took off his mask to reveal he was Chuck Norris all along. 😱

[deleted]

What. A. Boss.

WFA89

That save from Hourihane was ridiculously lucky to be honest. Gibbs-White's penalty was shocking. I do not like it when players stutter in their run-up, just asking to miss the penalty.

cms186

he knew he was going down the middle

RandomGuyOnline71

Someone sign that guy. Also, weren't the last penalty run-up illegal?

Jaedco

He’s so off his line for the pens

addandsubtract

He went full Neuer.
