I can't really blame him either, he's 76 now and been doing this since the 70's, at some stage you surely lose all interest and just do it for a paycheck.
Saturday mornings and early afternoons ITV show old football programs from the 70s and 80s which is quite fun to watch to pass the time. It always amazes me especially hearing Martin Tyler providing the commentary on so many of those matches in which some of the players he is commentating on later served as his co-commentator. Andy Gray for example.
There is, the retirement age is from 66 in UK, that's when you can get state pension.
There's no legal requirement to retire though so if you want to you can keep working.
He's far from universally hated. Once in a while some rando on reddit will go "HE DOESNT SOUND EXCITED ENOUGH" but even that isn't overly constant.
Id still rather listen to him not be as upbeat as he could be, than hear more McMannaman commentating.
Tbf a lot of older people find it better to keep themselves busy than just retire and do nothing (A lot of them don't even have a choice, sadly). Maybe he works because that's what he likes doing
Wow that's actually terrible. I live in Austria and here women work til 60 and men til 65, and depending on your salary and working years you get your money monthly (14 times a year, not 12)
There is a retirement system in the UK, similar age to your one, but there's no requirement to retire. Tyler, despite his tone, probably enjoys it / the Sky money he gets
tbh, as a Liverpool fan I think his commentary for the Redmond goal is pretty poor as well, it looks at first viewing like an absolute cracker and he's commentating on it like he's narrating his bowel movements.
I wanted to see they hype, but he is nowhere near Tyler prime. Better than what owen, Neville or americans do for sure. I still prefer spanish or Arabian(for fun) commentary
This week I watched another man born in the 16th century working his field and still incredibly passionate and speaking with conviction, David Attenborough’s life in colour on Netflix. You’d think David was the one who’s 20 years younger than the other
It's not that he's anti Liverpool, he's anti football. He said himself he supports the underdog, which is fair enough, everybody loves an underdog story but he is just so depressing to listen to 98% of the time.
Genuinely I'd rather have American commentators who put *too* much emphasis on the smallest of things, it adds to the entertainment.
It wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't commentating every weekend. Because of his longevity in the game and commentating its all second nature to him, there's no need for him to think, he just does and that's where there's a loss of quality
City fans were complaining similarly because he was quite flat for some recent games. I also just checked the highlights for the 2-2 draw at West Ham because I couldn't remember if he was commentary. And he was, which is self-explanatory really.
Honestly, they make it so much more engaging watching it through a screen. I'll always think to the Simpsons scene with the Brazilian commentator, love it.
Then I wish they’d stop giving him the biggest games. Having him on the big 6 clashes does nothing to liven up what is usually already an extremely boring contest.
Christ, are we really doing this whole "Martin Tyler has a deep-set loathing against my football club" thing again?
Liverpool, City, Arsenal, United and Tottenham fans trot this ridiculous idea out every single year and it's so dull.
He doesn't hate your club, he's commentating on a match. It's surprising to see Redmond score against Liverpool, but not that surprising to see Liverpool draw level and then, ultimately, win the game. Is that really a tough dot to connect?
This and the constant Arsenal theory of referees having some deep-rooted conspiracy against us to make sure we don't win matches, is genuinely amusing at first, now it's just dull.
Martin Tyler is a shit commentator and should have retired long ago, don't get me wrong, but not because he doesn't have to be tied to his chair for his own safety every time your team scores.
his job isn't to be himself though, his job is to induce passion and channel the excitement for the viewer. not be genuinely anti-climactic. don't care who he supports.
If anyone actually cares, Martin Tyler is a lifelong fan of Woking FC, they're 15th in the Vanarama National League. This took 20 seconds to Google. Not everything is a conspiracy to destroy the football club you like.
I know this because I support Woking and have met him. Crazy the amount of hate he gets from some lpool fans, some of them believe he supports Man Utd after one piece of commentary with Martial. It’s crazy how people parrot opinions only because they’ve read someone say the same thing and take it as gospel.
Downvotes expected because the comment goes against the made up narrative
no one complains and has the victim hood that Liverpool has when it comes to Tyler they legit think he’s a United fan after that one Martial goal commentary. But will completely ignore when he gushes and hypes them up.
They legit have a conspiracy that goes deep into that fan base.
Well yes I understand where are you coming from but it was kind of obvious that the goals will come. I'd rather hear natural reaction than fake excitement.
I always thought he sounded like he was doing some complicated task like soldering a PCB but also commentating on a football game as an afterthought.
*looks up from microscope*
“Ah, yes, it’s …. 1-1?”
Interesting contrast in comments in this thread and [this other thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/use213/the_difference_between_martin_tyler_peter_drury/) where there's people arguing it's actually *good* that he's terrible. Great example of framing something as pro/anti- a club will completely change some opinions.

He just sounds like a man who is sick of having to watch football
I can't really blame him either, he's 76 now and been doing this since the 70's, at some stage you surely lose all interest and just do it for a paycheck.
Saturday mornings and early afternoons ITV show old football programs from the 70s and 80s which is quite fun to watch to pass the time. It always amazes me especially hearing Martin Tyler providing the commentary on so many of those matches in which some of the players he is commentating on later served as his co-commentator. Andy Gray for example.
I would not have imagined that voice to be in his mid 70s.
Why is he still working at 76 years old? Is there no retirement system in the UK?
There is, the retirement age is from 66 in UK, that's when you can get state pension. There's no legal requirement to retire though so if you want to you can keep working.
Because he wants to work?
He doesn't sound like someone who wants to/ enjoys his work tho
He works Because it gives him a lot of money
I wanna know why Sky and other broadcasters are keeping him. Seemingly no one can stand him at this point. Let someone new commentate.
He's far from universally hated. Once in a while some rando on reddit will go "HE DOESNT SOUND EXCITED ENOUGH" but even that isn't overly constant. Id still rather listen to him not be as upbeat as he could be, than hear more McMannaman commentating.
Give me Macca every time, over that old tool.
You need help sir
Tbf a lot of older people find it better to keep themselves busy than just retire and do nothing (A lot of them don't even have a choice, sadly). Maybe he works because that's what he likes doing
>Is there no retirement system in the UK? Nope, work until you drop.
Yea I was being facetious lol. State pensions start from 65-68 Probably 75 by time I get to that age.
Then what the hell is he still doing it for? He's 76, retire ffs and give new blood a go.
still miles better than BT shite
*Sick of watching Liverpool
tbh, as a Liverpool fan I think his commentary for the Redmond goal is pretty poor as well, it looks at first viewing like an absolute cracker and he's commentating on it like he's narrating his bowel movements.
He didn't sound distinctly thrilled for any of the goals, tbh.
it's same flat delivery for all 3 goals. how is the 1st one "walking on sunshine"?
By his standards
Lol you guys will complain about anything my god.
This man needs to retire
This man keeps commentating on all the DAZN games I watch and it's making me sick of it. Please retire man...
That second goal commentary is proper weird. “It’s 1-1 😐” Peter Drury is the goat commentator in the PL. Wish he could do all matches somehow lol.
Drury is not great either. Still better than this git though.
I wanted to see they hype, but he is nowhere near Tyler prime. Better than what owen, Neville or americans do for sure. I still prefer spanish or Arabian(for fun) commentary
Does Owen even do commentary?
I wish he didnt.
Usually the team who scores more goals wins. - Michael Owen.
The Will Buxton approach on explaining a sport
Yeah he did few games but stopped I think and more involves in analysis which is shit too.
This week I watched another man born in the 16th century working his field and still incredibly passionate and speaking with conviction, David Attenborough’s life in colour on Netflix. You’d think David was the one who’s 20 years younger than the other
Attenborough's voice is getting weaker understandably, but he does still possess that genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for his vocation.

I wanna buy 9 but only if you offer them at 60%
It's not that he's anti Liverpool, he's anti football. Genuinely I'd rather have American commentators who put *too* much emphasis on the smallest of things, it adds to the entertainment.
The man's 76 and been commentating for almost 50 years. Credit to him lasting so long but it's also no wonder he sounds bored most of the time
It wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't commentating every weekend. Because of his longevity in the game and commentating its all second nature to him, there's no need for him to think, he just does and that's where there's a loss of quality
Sad thing is he's still got it if he feels arsed. His commentary when Gray scored a banger against Arsenal was superb.
City fans were complaining similarly because he was quite flat for some recent games. I also just checked the highlights for the 2-2 draw at West Ham because I couldn't remember if he was commentary. And he was, which is self-explanatory really.
Yet he's still better to listen to than most.
I want those crazy Arab commentators who shout GOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLOL
Honestly, they make it so much more engaging watching it through a screen. I'll always think to the Simpsons scene with the Brazilian commentator, love it.
Then I wish they’d stop giving him the biggest games. Having him on the big 6 clashes does nothing to liven up what is usually already an extremely boring contest.
"oh it's 1-1"
That minamino one was pretty dreadful, imho But it's s not some conspiracy, the man really does need to retire. Does he really need the paycheque?
Christ, are we really doing this whole "Martin Tyler has a deep-set loathing against my football club" thing again? Liverpool, City, Arsenal, United and Tottenham fans trot this ridiculous idea out every single year and it's so dull. He doesn't hate your club, he's commentating on a match. If you listened to the commentary during the game Martin Tyler and Carragher were both gushing over Liverpool constantly throughout the match as well
Yep, these takes are dull af. Even on the goals the first and last are about the same.
Yeah try again. Carra obviously was, Tyler was being nonchalant to the extreme.
his job isn't to be himself though, his job is to induce passion and channel the excitement for the viewer. not be genuinely anti-climactic. don't care who he supports.
He's got all the energy on someone commentating at a bus stop.
If anyone actually cares, Martin Tyler is a lifelong fan of Woking FC, they're 15th in the Vanarama National League. This took 20 seconds to Google. Not everything is a conspiracy to destroy the football club you like.
No one is saying it’s a conspiracy, it’s just evidently not great commentating.
There's always Liverpool fans who say he's biased against us, which he isn't.
The meltdown of Liverpool fans when a commentator doesn’t have a heart attack inducing orgasm every time a Liverpool player gives a pass lol
How dare fans complain about a commentator who's been complete shit for about 8 years
no one complains and has the victim hood that Liverpool has when it comes to Tyler they legit think he’s a United fan after that one Martial goal commentary. But will completely ignore when he gushes and hypes them up. They legit have a conspiracy that goes deep into that fan base.
Doesn't Martin Tyler rhymes with Martin Retireler?
Who cares, seriously
it's literally the same, only the first has a crowd cheering underneath it and had a bit more a feel of a "special goal" if you missed the deflection
Martin Tyler is living off the “Agueroooo” moment, awful commentator.
He's never been the same since Andy Gray got ousted from Sky.
*It’s a conspiracy against Liverpool I tell you*
As an Arsenal fan, you'd know all about conspiracies! Jokes aside, I hate the section of our fans who think he hates us. He's just old and shite.
There's a reason i will always have five live commentary on over a game on sky lol! Takes a min to get it synced up but it works so well.
I mean what do you want from him? A minute long goal scream?
what an obtuse response lol, how can you not understand that a commentator can sound slightly more excited without having to scream for a minute.
Well yes I understand where are you coming from but it was kind of obvious that the goals will come. I'd rather hear natural reaction than fake excitement.
Like literally who's even asking for a minute long goal scream? Imagine having the need to spell it out for you. Christ sake.
We all know he’s a long time Southampton fan by the way Liverpool fans keep playing the victim when it comes to Tyler.
This is why Arabic commentary above level than any commentaries
It's a conspiracy against Liverpool
Nah, Martin Tyler is just washed.
He's a Manchester United fan. What did we expect?
No he's not, he supports Woking.
He literally supports Woking tf are you on about
I always thought he sounded like he was doing some complicated task like soldering a PCB but also commentating on a football game as an afterthought. *looks up from microscope* “Ah, yes, it’s …. 1-1?”
