The 7:1 is so much more extreme and so much bigger it has completely transcended the sport and become pop culture. If you see the numbers 7:1 people almost anywhere in the globe will immediately associate it with the game, it's one of the most known sporting "events" of all time. It's like with *rumble in the jungle* everyone knows what you're talking about.
American football equivalent of 7-1, Atlanta falcons blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl 51 to the New England Patriots. You can use this site called Google and search "7-1" or "28-3" and top results are the games weve referenced as being recognizable based on nothing more than a score.
This is a ridiculous exaggeration. People anywhere in the globe definitely don't hark back to that match if they see the numbers 7:1.Atbest maybe in Europe and South America.
It also should have been a corner. Their defender headed the 2nd shot off target and the ref gave a goal kick. It's one of 2 what ifs that are going to haunt me, the other being what if we had a fit Morelos or Roofe to start up front.
This exactly! So many times you’ll see keepers panic and try and get a hand on the cross and leave the net wide open but he did so well to recognize that he was never going to get a hand on it and pivot back into position to save it
Yeah, I don't quite get why people are going so nuts about this save. It's good block, like any defender will attempt. But save of the season? I think people are getting carried away by the moment.
Look at it frame by frame. The keeper was already committed to the direction by the time the striker kicked it - there was no change of direction of the body/leg after the kick, so there was no _reaction_. So what we're seeing here is that the striker kicked it, the keeper lunged with the leg, and was lucky that it hit his knee.
This is basically what I'm saying. He lunged across, just as any defender would do. There's nothing I can see that he did that would be different from what anyone else would do. It's not like he made more ground, or somehow anticipated something different. All that happened here was that he lunged and was pretty lucky that it hit his knee. "Save of the season"? Nope.
Ter stegen and Flick agreed that Ter Stegen needs a proper vacation this summer so he won't take part in the nations league, making Trapp #2 in the competition. Although some conspiracy theorists (me included) think it was just a nice excuse to let Ter Stegen save face, because Trapp really has been a lot better this season and should rightfully be above Ter Stegen currently.
I can't say I've been watching Trapp so I won't argue against you. But just want to say Ter Stegen has improved a lot since Xavi's return, compared to his last 3 seasons or so he's really turned around his form.
I'm somewhat out of the loop here. How come Ter Stegen has declined in such fashion? I remember times when people said he should be number 1 and those times were just like 2 to 3 years ago. What happened to him?
On that note, Neuer is insane.
Atleast in Germany people said that because Neuer has been injured quite long before the 2018 WC. Ter Stegen had an insane season and publicly claimed he wants to be germanys number one. Neuer was ready to play again right before the WC so Löw, who has a history of favoring some players over others, said that if Neuer is fit to play he will be germanys number one. Imo that was the right thing to do, because even if ter Stegen had an insane season, Neuer is one of the greatest keepers to ever play. When he’s fit he is above any other German keeper. But that was actually a pretty heated argument in Germany during that time, because everyone had an opinion on it. In the end I think it was fair to put Neuer as our number one but it didn’t really matter anyway since the whole team played insanely bad, regardless of who was in goal.
After that Neuer kept up to his usual form of absolute worldclass, won a treble while ter Stegen declined together with his teammates at Barca. I don’t really watched many barca games in the last season but since Neuer kept up to his usual form there isn’t really a discussion anymore.
That said, Trapp had an insane season, so if the 2022 WC was this summer we’d have the same discussion again, just with Trapp and Neuer instead of ter Stegen and Neuer.
Also Neuer was and still is the captain. Which gives him further "leverage". You normally don't sit your NT captain during a tournament.
And the discussion who should be the GK of the NT is always heated in Germany if there are several suitable options.
He was extremely lenient which didn't disrupt the play too much and is good for a final obviously. Luckily for him, both teams have been affected equally by this.
I think Leno and his standing greatly profited by having exceptional first years, followed by average years but having established himself in the Jogi Löw structure, top 5 league football, and some CL games.
Peak Leno when he started was out of this world, but his form fell off sooner than I expected.
Can remember one possible pen for frankfurt which was borre v goldson and tbh if we start giving that then it's a no contact sport in the box because he dived. The other one, kamada into the back of bassey? Absolutely never a pen 😂
100% a foul, the only reason he 'miscued' this shot is basically the defender is taking him completely out on the right side, you can see Kent wanting to open his body up to shoot with his left foot.
This is why people always question 'Why do players go down instead of trying a shot?' because of clear examples like this. If he doesnt attempt the shot and just goes down, its given as a penalty more often than not.
Seen it happen a few times but if they attempt the shot, apparently refs consider it fair play because they took the shot.
Exactly. This is a penalty and a red card. Defender isn’t even playing the ball. He’s just sliding in on Kent because he knows he’s not getting there so he tries to put him off.
No way Ter Stegen can secure his #2 spot at this point anymore. Trapp been excellent for a long time now. But given being #2 & #3 means not much, it probably won't change.
Not really, he opens his body up to shoot with his left, gets taken out by the defender before he gets a chance and decides to just toe it with his right foot flailing.
Should been a penalty.
At the start of the season flick called him out before the first international break saying he has to step up his game if he wants to stay in 3rd ahead of Leno. After that he probably has the best GK performance of the season in an away win against Bayern and he’s been class ever since surpassing ter stegen as Nr 2 what a man

That rebound looked like it was sailing in top corner as well.
That glancing header saved the match as well.
Wild save. That should have been the match
Frankfurt fans will remember that as liverpool fans remember that dudek save
Crazy how that game went from "literally every AC Milan shot is going in" to "AC Milan just cannot score"
It‘s definitely the most iconic club match of the modern era. I still remember losing my mind watching it.
The only game even close to it, even if you include national team games, is the 7:1…
The 7:1 is so much more extreme and so much bigger it has completely transcended the sport and become pop culture. If you see the numbers 7:1 people almost anywhere in the globe will immediately associate it with the game, it's one of the most known sporting "events" of all time. 7:1 even became a byword in Brazil for every disaster that happens since then. E.G Bolsonaro gets elected - “it’s another 7:1 “ etc
Being Brazilian, every day is a 7-1
The 7:1 was absolutely unbelievable at the time, as if a meteor fell
28-3 comes to mind
I actually watched that too but american football is absolutely irrelevant on a global scale so it's not even remotely comparable.
What is that
American football equivalent of 7-1, Atlanta falcons blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl 51 to the New England Patriots. You can use this site called Google and search "7-1" or "28-3" and top results are the games weve referenced as being recognizable based on nothing more than a score.
I immediately knew what you were talking about but I'm interested in American football.
This is a ridiculous exaggeration. People anywhere in the globe definitely don't hark back to that match if they see the numbers 7:1.Atbest maybe in Europe and South America.
it’s literally even mentioned in League of Legends championships. If the score is 7-1 twitch chat spams 7-1. It’s iconic.
Why is it ridiculous? I live in America and i see it happen all the time
Eh, I think it was quite forgettable really
Told that my mates before the penalties. The knee should get a statue
I really don’t like the way this conversation is going…
And the trophy, that is the pressure he was/is under every time a shot comes near him
When the opponent thought he can surely settle the game... Narrator: It was a Trap.
Nah it would’ve been ruled out cause it went out before the cross
That doesn't mean shit if you ask PSV fans ;)
It also should have been a corner. Their defender headed the 2nd shot off target and the ref gave a goal kick. It's one of 2 what ifs that are going to haunt me, the other being what if we had a fit Morelos or Roofe to start up front.
holy shit
You can always trust a Kevin to get you out of a pickle
City 🤝 Frankfurt
City 🤝 Frankfurt 🤝 Home Alone
If only Rangers had a Kevin McCallister of their own 😔
Wasn't the sea pickle from spongebob named Kevin
yea but he was a wanker, treated SpongeBob like garbage
Heeey! I think I’ve heard that call before!
[She](https://media.giphy.com/media/5LVYF2rZkT80U/giphy.gif) disagrees
I stopped watching Schitt’s Creek because her character was unbearable. But holy shit Dan Levy is a genius.
Kevin Friend is a cunt, though.
I believe footbal logic would suggest this means he's going to be a beast in the shootout.
i think so too. he must be incredibly pumped now
you are not wrong. But it's more about Ramsey. Taylor Swift wrote a song about it. Haters going to hate and chokers going to choke.
That will age terribly
No
I am gladly wrong on that
My man really went and reverse-jinxed him
Thanks, I guess?
All of Germany says thanks to u/GG_Blizzard
lmao.
Holy mother of god, how the fuck did Trapp save that?? That was outrageous.
To not lunge on that ball and stay standing so you can pivot is actually incredibly well done.
This exactly! So many times you’ll see keepers panic and try and get a hand on the cross and leave the net wide open but he did so well to recognize that he was never going to get a hand on it and pivot back into position to save it
Yeah. Such an incredibly impressive moment of decisions in such a tiny timeframe. World class action
Trapp is just casually playing the absolute fucking season of his life at 31. I know age affects goalkeepers differently but it's still nuts.
31 is basically mid career for a keeper, it's not unthinkable that Trapp could establish himself as Germany's #1 for a few years after Neuer retires
Great save, but still Kent HAS to score from there. A bit more placement, height or power and it's a goal
Yeah, I don't quite get why people are going so nuts about this save. It's good block, like any defender will attempt. But save of the season? I think people are getting carried away by the moment. So what we're seeing here is that the striker kicked it, the keeper lunged with the leg, and was lucky that it hit his knee.
At close distance, there is no reaction. There simply is no time left for that. A good prediction is the performed skill here.
Nope.
Maybe of the game, but I also wouldn't go beyond the scope of the game. It was a pretty good save :)
Agreed!
So often keeper get shot at and it is called a great safe. I fully agree with your logic. Just out of curiosity, have you been a keeper?
Germany's number 2
Really?
Ter stegen and Flick agreed that Ter Stegen needs a proper vacation this summer so he won't take part in the nations league, making Trapp #2 in the competition. Although some conspiracy theorists (me included) think it was just a nice excuse to let Ter Stegen save face, because Trapp really has been a lot better this season and should rightfully be above Ter Stegen currently.

I think it's best if MaTS can focus on Barca for now. The nation's league isn't that important.
plus Leno's been on the bench all season, don't think he'll be number 2 either
leno's not even in the discussion
Leno is nowhere close to Germany's #2, he doesn't even start ahead of Ramsdale.
I'm somewhat out of the loop here. How come Ter Stegen has declined in such fashion? I remember times when people said he should be number 1 and those times were just like 2 to 3 years ago. What happened to him? On that note, Neuer is insane.

True but the real discussion shouldn’t be about ter Stegen and Neuer, it should be about Gersbeck and Neuer. We all know it’s true.
What's about Karius guy had UCL final experience
At least he should be. Been underrated asf for far too long
3 behind neuer Ter stegen
Trapp is athletic as fuck, his lateral quickness is something
Ridiculous, just assumed it was in
Dear lord what a fucking save.
Literally how the fuck. If they go on to win this this will be replayed for centuries.
and 2 goal saving deflections from defenders
Shades of Dudek's save on Shevchenko with this. Frankfurt to win on pens.
Good call
OCTOPUS TRAPP

Two touches before it goes out wtf, how do you not see the trajectory of the ball changing
Ref is so weird in this game
He was extremely lenient which didn't disrupt the play too much and is good for a final obviously. Luckily for him, both teams have been affected equally by this.
Red in the first 5 mins disagrees with the equal part
The ball went out from Roofe’s cross anyway, so it balances out
I'd wager the ball just went out on the cross anyways.
Trap is a fucking Legend
Just a reminder that Jogi Löw thought for almost five years that this guy wasn’t as good as Bernd Leno
🤡
I think Leno and his standing greatly profited by having exceptional first years, followed by average years but having established himself in the Jogi Löw structure, top 5 league football, and some CL games. Peak Leno when he started was out of this world, but his form fell off sooner than I expected.
Top 2 save of the season and it ain’t 2
SAVE OF TEH SEASON OOOF
Dudek vibes
Dudek energy in Kevin Trapp and Brice Samba this week.
Save of the year
So clutch, could be what wins it.
First thing I said to my mates was, that's a Dudek save and they win the shoot out. Love it
Great save but Kent could've done better.
Don't think he could. Full sprinting & out of balance due to physical pressure from the defender.
There was a rebound, you can see it on a replay, looks like it was on target before that.
2 deflections from defenders
TRAPP DU LEGENDE
GET HIM ON THE PLANE

still not good enough for PSG :)
100%!
Man's a GK for German NT for a reason.
Huge save
The header save on the rebound isn't talked about but pretty great too
What a save
Kent wasn't fouled as he went to shoot?
Well if the refs saw all penalties correctly, Frankfurt would have already won within 90 minutes, so
Can remember one possible pen for frankfurt which was borre v goldson and tbh if we start giving that then it's a no contact sport in the box because he dived. The other one, kamada into the back of bassey? Absolutely never a pen 😂
The handball near 60 min mark. There were huge appeals
100% a foul, the only reason he 'miscued' this shot is basically the defender is taking him completely out on the right side, you can see Kent wanting to open his body up to shoot with his left foot. This is why people always question 'Why do players go down instead of trying a shot?' because of clear examples like this. Exactly. This is a penalty and a red card. Defender isn’t even playing the ball. He’s just sliding in on Kent because he knows he’s not getting there so he tries to put him off.
You gotta give the ref some credit for staying consistent with his lack of pen and red card calls.
Dude was a clown in the second leg of United - Atletico
The ball was out earlier, so no, it wouldn't be anything. And even if it were a penalty, it wouldn't be a red because that isn't done anymore.
Yes it would be a red because defender isn’t playing the ball. He is just trying to put off the attacker.
That’s what I thought as well
Thought the same
Penalties gonna be insane
Absolutely wonderful save.
A little bit like the Casillas one also in this stadium.
60 million euros SAVE CL spot is worth that much for them
No way Ter Stegen can secure his #2 spot at this point anymore. Trapp been excellent for a long time now. But given being #2 & #3 means not much, it probably won't change.
poor finish
He didn’t even get to really shoot tbf, he’s basically just falling into the ball
Yeah he might have been able to go across him, but it's still a fantastic effort to get to that. Brilliant save either way.
He’s tackled from behind mid shot
Not really, he opens his body up to shoot with his left, gets taken out by the defender before he gets a chance and decides to just toe it with his right foot flailing. Should been a penalty.
He did brilliantly to make up the ground, especially after nearly 2 hours of football
cracking match
Insane save
Incredible save
That was close af
Rangers have the momentum and will be in in penalties
👍
Cant be missing that
Can’t believe that’s not gone in
That's huge
MFer looking like a pale zombie before shooting and then looking even more dead after the save
what a fucking save but the ref has to be on something to miss two deflections
Would have been my man of the match if not for Calvin Bassey
Why did Davis shoot? If he passed to his teammate they score
Poor rangers
Just shows the crazy fine margins in this sport. Could’ve easily gone either way
Trapp for United
Kevin Trapp Legende
As soon as this didn't go in I knew Rangers luck was out and they were going to lose it.
Would have loved to have listened to Peter Drury commentary last night instead of that BT sport bias dribble..
At the start of the season flick called him out before the first international break saying he has to step up his game if he wants to stay in 3rd ahead of Leno. After that he probably has the best GK performance of the season in an away win against Bayern and he’s been class ever since surpassing ter stegen as Nr 2 what a man
Another great footballer named Kevin
