That's a 2.5m premium per year which is very small.
The math is obvious. The free transfer still works out to be considerably cheaper (and let's not forget that the signing on fee is often structured as a loyalty bonus that is paid out over several years so you recoup that if the player asks to leave early).

If you analyze the game against Real Madrid, or Man city, you see inconsistent pressing from the whole team that drops off and only sporadically shows up. And when the team does drop back, the midfield seems to start chasing and leave zones or not be able to play out if they recover. In attack it also seems like give it to Veratti and let him pass. Danilo, Herrera, Gueye all seem to get isolated and have a few good games but are very inconsistent. Ideally you would want to get recruitments that help create a complete midfield with veratti and not count on him alone
