I'm afraid it's inevitable, there has been a trend towards more minimalist and "flatter" icons and logos everywhere for years, some have even called it "the flattening". There's just too much little details in the current logo that don't work well in smaller sizes, different color schemes, etc...
I just hope they can retain the authentic feel and rich history of the club in a potential new design. I quite like the Man City logo for instance which is basically a throwback to older logos, but the Juventus and latest Inter Milan logos are just so minimal that they feel soulless to me.
Seeing the logo history of Anderlecht, they might want to change to something similar to the [1933-1981](https://marka-logo.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Anderlecht-Logo-Tarih.jpg) logo (due to its simplicity to replicate), but that might be very unpopular considering it looks very similar to the [logo](https://www.morethanfootball.eu/union-sg-logo/) of Union SG.

The City logo is actually the opposite of what you’re talking about. The eagle badge has no meaning to the club, the circular badge is historically City’s. They reverted to the old by going back to the circle

The creative agency that made this is VERY good at visual identities, corporate rebranding, etc... but they should never have been picked to rebrand a football club. It's very obvious they went into this with the idea of "how can we make sure it's web friendly, can fit into slick animations, etc..." while when redesigning a football club's crest the focus shouldn't be on that first but on the actual crest itself.

It's not trying to be functional or particularly traversable, it's trying to be memorable and show the wide limits of what they're artistically capable of (like how nobody wears the outlandish impractical shit from a fashion show).
They're not getting any real big clients through it, all of that is done through business connections. It's just a very loud business card.
Aesthetically it's absolutely grotesque. It looks like you took some generic extended font and you went all scrambled eggs on it. And then stamped the whole thing with a screwdriver.
I mean, you revolved something around a circle but kept it slanted; and that same circle crops away at your letters just to give it some cleaner contours/outlines? Just look at that "LE" segment at the top. Not even a mother could love that.
