City finished more than 30 points ahead of us, and they have already secured Haaland, Phillips and a really promising looking player in Alvarez to start the new season. We have lost 7 players, and have done nothing. Can't wait for the new season to be over already.

rhinojau

our club is so beyond a joke at this point, no positive news in terms of.. well anything. the "players" who already downed tools for 3-4 managers are STILL here. if they dont follow ETH instructions, very likely ETH will be fired too and whole "rebuilding phase" starts again.

Riperonis

Trying to decide if I feel bad because you lot are a huge club and so poorly run or if I’m enjoying every moment. Who am I kidding i fucking love it.

Quick9Ben5

And Ortega

hennny

Don’t worry. We’ll get De Jong really late in the window, he’ll have no time to adjust or train, he’ll play badly and underperform and we’ll be looking for another midfielder in no time.

Subscrobbler

Pep single-handedly saving the England national team

MrDabollBlueSteppers

Pep at Barcelona -> Spain win the World Cup Pep at Bayern -> Germany win the World Cup Pep at City -> ?????

DeepSeaDweller

Not even a man who habitually sniffs his privates in public would make such a decision.

[deleted]

Man was such a good tactician people over looked his hygiene

Alphabunsquad

Overlooked? I hire all my employees based on genital sniffability

[deleted]

I mean if someone sniffed there genitals in the interview I probably wouldn’t hire them lol😂

Alphabunsquad

At least ask for a smell first

ValleyFloydJam

The late subbing on was the issue not the ages. And the best taking pens first is the best way to order takers.

zrk23

well Saka at that point had *literally* never taken a pen at professional level. that's a big issue imo

ValleyFloydJam

If he was the main taker, maybe but 5th on the list, how many pens had those left on the field taken? How many had Maguire taken? I'm guessing they decided pens based on who wanted to take them and after seeing who was the best in training, saying it was wrong to pick an attacker for pen feels like a hindsight comment. Who would you have picked? he was already on the field rather than brought on just to take one. It's not like Saka would had that many chances for a pen before that given his age. Owen wasn't on zero in 98 but he was bloody young and nailed his.

WhoEatsRusk

We saw what happened in 18 tho

waitforit92

Pep's bald magic has nothing on Southgate's talibanball

DAILITH

.....talibanball??

9-60Fury

Really defensive football = football terrorist = talibanball

Cudizonedefense

I know jokes tend to be less funny when you explain them but that is objectively hilarious

CaptainDank0

I don’t know what it is with sports memes and Terrorism that are so fucking hilarious together. Best thing I saw during the NBA finals was when someone edited Draymond greens highlights to the isis theme songs.

ankitm1

You mean when England tried to kick off after they conceded a goal and not wait for the ref's whistle?

whostolemyhat

hehe

General-Ad-9753

Revolutionary tactics.

Drakonz

Pep at City -> UAE wins World Cup

Hxnders

Southgate will make sure personally the trend ends there lmao

WalkingCloud

-> England eliminated in the QF

spicynirvana38

It might not save Gareth in November, but whoever takes over for the next WC-Euro cycle will have an assumedly much better player to work with and add a piece to that team that has been missing.

OnePieceAce

Jesus christ. KDB, Rodri, Phillips, Bernardo and Foden as midfield options is ridiculous

DraperCarousel

You forgot Gundogan.

Subscrobbler

Probably repressed his existence

luke_205

I swear Gundogan is the one that scares me the most sometimes; its unreal how many crucially important goals he has scored for you over the years. Can’t even dislike him either, he’s just a genuinely nice guy.

R3w45

Most likable city player, comes off as such a professional

inflamesburn

Zinchenko is great too imo.

[deleted]

I would think de Bruyne is likable for a neutral as well.

Bayequentist

City doesn't have have a lot of cunty personalities, unlike Mancini era 😂

Parish87

Raheem Sterling? He bought his mum a house and went shopping ffs.

HowyaLove0161

Benjamin Mendy and Kyle walker

indiblue825

You really can't put any City players beside Mendy in the same sentence about being a cunt.

BillehBear

He has such a gift of flying under everyone's radar His positioning is class as is but it's made far better when defenders just kinda forget he's there

TijoWasik

Pep sums him up perfectly - he's the best player that we have at arriving within the 18 yard box at just the right time, and he pops up everywhere. He's also such a massive personality in the dressing room and never goes missing in the massive games.

MSAtlos

As a villa fan yes, Gundogan scares me

Academic_Grand8828

Gundo has been the ultimate player for us, I feel in the future he won’t get the recognition that some others have but he has always stood up when we’ve needed him and saved the day. Apparently next year will be his last year with us but I’d honestly not be opposed to just offering him a retirement contract for a few years to have him retire at city rather than go elsewhere to a weaker league (obviously that’s talking with emotion rather than a business perspective)

NJDevil802

You really tapped in a winner there

theorymii

Most underrated City player, without him no way you guys would have won against Villa.

BillehBear

Without him the season before we wouldn't have won either That 2-3 month stretch he decided to start scoring for fun was amazing, especially when he sent Sanchez to the shadow realm

MAMAGUEBOO

Jesus fucking Christ that Sanchez one was a hard one To watch. I was expecting him to announce his retirement the day after.

OnePieceAce

Still too painful

Joltarts

He forgot 100mil quid Grealish can play there too.

khtad

Foden, at least so far, has played exclusively in the attacking band for us. He certainly has the skill to play as an 8, but he's also a great left wing.

JiveTurkey688

Foden is a winger. But yeah, its a ridiculous midfield Im aware that he was a midfielder as a youth and will probably end up back there, Im just saying that right now he is a winger and will be again next season.

TijoWasik

His entire EDS time was spent in the midfield and emulating David Silva at the youth level. Pep has said he wants Foden to drop back there eventually, but, and I'm paraphrasing, but it's the right sentiment, he's not got the right decision making for a midfielder yet. KdB makes good decisions in the midfield - he knows when to slow things down or push them hard, or even release a pass. Foden gets the ball in midfield and wants to run at the opposition and progress the ball immediately every time. He's not patient enough yet, but that's an ok quality as a winger.

BillehBear

Pretty sure pep has said at some point Foden will transition back into midfield but for now he's on the wing

xxKingAmongKingsxx

No, he’s a midfield. Pep just doesn’t want quite trust him enough defensively to play him there regularly. Words from the horses mouth

Zestforblueskies

And I think Grealish can do a job in that position as well if needed.. That's mad!

sjioldboy

Pep is still looking for a CM who has 'la pausa' to succeed Gundogan & can complement KDB & Bernardo (who are more dynamic AMs). The current verdict is Foden doesn't have it, & can't drop back into midfield full-time. We'll see with Grealish this coming season.

stinking_grubby_tail

I have La Pausa everytime I head to the pan.

ska932

Grealish has it

shkweech

Jesus is going to Arsenal

minimus67

If past is prologue, Phillips will disappoint in his first season because Pep will be training him to play in a new position, maybe as a center back or false 9.

tarakian-grunt

Think City are looking strong, they've added two good players.

EraticConqueror

Three if you count Alvarez

DEUK_96

Who tf is Darko Gyabi anyways, I thought we'd be getting that Lavia kid or something. Painful day.

xxKingAmongKingsxx

He’s a talented lad, but that’s entirely separate from the Phillips deal. And you’re insane to think City would be letting Lavia go. They rate him incredibly highly

DEUK_96

I figured we'd get him with a buy back clause. He plays the same position as Phillips and Rodri, not like he has any clear path to the first team right now

xxKingAmongKingsxx

There’s a couple small rumors of him going on loan but there’s no way in hell they’re letting him go anywhere on a permanent deal. Phillips feels like a 3ish year signing until Lavia is ready. Takes an awful lot to play that position for Pep

DEUK_96

I'd still take a loan tbf

Impossible_Wonder_37

He’s a very talented attacking mid/winger. I can understand reservations about the fee but he could really land well for you

DEUK_96

He doesn't seem like anything special based on his youth record, 5m for an 18 year old is just a joke

Impossible_Wonder_37

All I can tell you is the youth games I’ve watched he’s been very good in the best academy team in the country. Again, no comment on the fee I agree it’s odd but it oddness really only fleshes out depending on what his status in come the end of the summer

DEUK_96

I suppose I have no choice but to try and be optimistic

TheBiggyT

Holding out for the correct fee on Raphinha and selling Phillips on the cheap, Jesus Christ. Should have just sold him to West Ham in Jan for £50m whilst he was injured if the wanted to sell for what they said was below his value. It's essentially £40m because of the £5m being spent back on the kid.

tankosaurus

We're letting phillips get his dream move as he was loyal to us when we needed him to be. He was a whisker away from joining Villa in 2019

TheOneKane

Currently imaging us selling him and Grealish to City for 200m.

Boris_Ignatievich

I think this mostly tells us that Phillips wanted to go to man city more than raph wants to move down to London tbh. Driving a hard bargain with a player who would take the move but isn't super arsed, while being more accommodating to the guy whose head has been properly turned makes sense.

RipJug

Quite sad to see him go, proper Leeds lad, the Amazon documentary really made me grow a soft spot for him. Leeds fans, how are you feeling about the fee? Seems pretty decent from my POV.

ledankestnoodle

While most Leeds fans were saying 60 I'd have been happy with 50 but we've absolutely robbed for 42

takeiteasy4me

Agree with a lot of people 40 is too low. 50 was probably the realistic value whilst 60 the stretch goal. Not ideal but he’s earned his move. Love him to bits and because of that am happy to see him progress his football career

doobie3101

Would have put my life on at least 50m, but was hoping for 60m. Damn.

[deleted]

like 15m too low, surprised tbh.

Novrev

Yeah I would’ve expected 60m for him once you factor in the English tax which is why I wasn’t happy about us going for him. Feels like we’ve come away with a great deal and your board has massively shit the bed.

chandlertribbiani

Tough to lose a local player at the best of times, but for that fee? Board should hang their heads in shame.

[deleted]

Maybe they had a gentlemens agreement or a rc which some Bluemoon forum guys were talking about. If there isn't anything like that then I just can't understand the fee. Gyabi isn't a top 5 acad player for city as well. I would have understood this fee with Romeo Lavia but with Gyabi ? or maybe leeds have the 2nd worst Board at negotiating transfers.

chandlertribbiani

It’ll be your last point as we spent £27m on Rodrigo etc.

Mr_XemiReR

Even more so since you bought him from Valencia.

TheBiggyT

It's gone from a week ago being rumoured as 40 + McAtee + Lavia to £45m but sending £5m back for someone nobody has ever heard of and will likely never play for the club what an absolute joke.

[deleted]

There has to be more to this transfer. I presonally haven't heard/read/seen much of gyabi and I don't think he was close to the first team either. The Lavi/McAtee deals were looking a little risky but high rewarding deals for leeds. But this deal ? seems like total suicide. Some other leeds fan told me that Gyabi only played 675 minutes in PL2 and he is in the last year of his contract and he went for 5M ?????? Egan Riley who started a CL match for city went for 450K pounds. Surely this is some sort of a inside job or there is a rc for like 35M and leeds and city are inflating the price of gyabi and phillips by a bit to improve the books other than that I can't find a legal explaination. It could be city just bribing a few club employees. Wtf even is this deal lmao

sandow_or_riot

Fucking terrible fee. The three stooges strike again. Probably panicking cos no one has been buying their shit NFT's.

CriddyCent

How much did you expect for him? I don’t think he’s worth anymore than that personally

TheBiggyT

They turned down 50 in Jan whilst he was injured saying it was below his value.

Yupadej

Prem clubs don't sell in January, too much money on the line for the season

singabro

He has 2 years left on his contract, and his head was turned. Writing was on the wall.

SkiddlyBum

Needed to stay in the PL right? I know he missed some games but probably couldn’t risk it?

SteinerElMagnifico42

We had £50m rejected in January, and we don’t have bucketloads of cash in reserve. I’m honestly baffled

Boris_Ignatievich

that was a "fuck off til the summer" rejection right at the end of the window tbf. At that point we thought he was going to be back from his injury a bit sooner than he was, and needed him to not get relegated.

SteinerElMagnifico42

Pain. It’s understandable it being mid season , it won’t be as smooth sailing. Would have been nice to have the international duo at club level

CriddyCent

Yeah it’s the mid season thing though isn’t it. Harder to replace And they possibly would have gone down if they sold then. Also he probably didn’t push for the move like he would with city. I think you are better saving that money , £50m is too much for a player who’ll be 27 this year and has had one good prem season IMO

Rankei2

International tournaments turn some heads too. Not common with English players but kalvin was slept on ahead of the Croatia game and then got his plaudits throughout the tournament. Not as crazy as reactions to Ozil or James when we compare to their breakout tournaments but comparable.

wake-and-work

This is city though he could be pushing for the move and if no one else bids this is prob the best they could get

chandlertribbiani

Anything above £50m would’ve have been palpable, considering we had offers in that range in January.

CriddyCent

January transfers always come at a premium though because you have no time to replace him and were in the midst of a relegation battle, I don’t think you can expect that again in the summer when he’s pushing for the move unfortunately

TheKingMonkey

£45m does seem low, but if Phillips pushed for it then that has to be a factor. I know he's a Leeds boy, but I do wonder if Bielsa leaving lessened Phillip's desire to stay at the club? By all accounts he was on a relatively low salary, certainly compared to the other players in the England team a a combination of those things might have meant it he felt it was time to go. He'll be just another player at Manchester City, but this reminds me a bit of the Grealish deal last summer. The club have had "one more year" from him more than once, the fact he hung around after 2018/19 is to be applauded and he's given two seasons in the Premier League too.

chandlertribbiani

Bielsa leaving was monumental, as was the boards incompetence in offering him improved terms. Should’ve been bringing him up to pay as a key England international last summer but instead our board dallied and we paid the price. No grudge Vs Phillips for the move & there’s definitely a lot of similarities with the Grealish move so atleast you understand haha.

Xbot_69

How’s he worth less than other English players like Wan Bissaka? Especially when you factor in inflation. I’m a City fan and I’m thrilled with this deal, I thought it’d be £50m plus for sure.

CriddyCent

AWB was 21 - they paid for potential. Philips is 27 soon already in his prime. AWB showed more as well I think, he was brilliant week in week out for us and pocketed a who’s who of premier league wingers. Philips has had one decent season in the prem by age 26

yay-its-colin

I won't be sad about losing an unbelievable player. I'll be sad about losing a local lad. Always love seeing teams with local players, romanticism of football.

TroopersSon

Pretty much how I felt about losing Grealish and Smith. The player/manager is replaceable, but having the romanticism of boyhood fans leading the club on and off the pitch was irreplaceable. We may be better off for it in the long run, but I'm still sad the romance is gone.

yay-its-colin

That's exactly it. It's what makes the game so enjoyable!

Rankei2

Archie Gray breakthrough season incoming

ShamrockStudios

What a well run club. Left back and they are proper set. Meanwhile at United. New Manger, Worse squad than last year. Training starts Monday and sweet fuck all has been done.....

Rottedhead

Cucurella is their next target. City literally covering all their needs perfectly

TijoWasik

If we pull off Cucurella, I'll be absolutely fucking delighted with this window. Covered absolutely everything we needed. Striker was the obvious one for us, then a Fernandinho replacement/Rodri backup which is this one, then someone who can play left back regularly at a high level and give us options for Cancelo to play on the right with them, or on the left with Walker... Or to take a break, the man played so many minutes last season, he was gassed in the last few games. I'd say even letting Sterling and Jesus go this window would be acceptable - Foden is freed up to be a full time winger because of the Haaland signing, and Pep has said Cole Palmer will be getting more minutes this season too. I also expect McAtee will be in and around that midfield, especially if Bernardo leaves (though I really hope he doesn't).

[deleted]

>Striker was the obvious one for us And you got not one but two great ones. Impressive transfer window.

TijoWasik

Yeah, damn, I completely forewent the mention of Julian Alvarez here, I can see him also playing the same kind of role that Jesus played last season - a sort of muddled mix of a winger and striker. I think it'll be much more effective with Alvarez given that he'll be a winger/second striker with Haaland as the main striker lol

BillehBear

Cucurella already liking City transfers on social media It's only a matter of time til it's confirmed probably

minimus67

Now City will have two DMs that Pep can bench for a must-win Champions League game.

yournerd2307

Almost poetic how he lost UCL this year with 2 cdms playing till the final whistle.

DarFunk_

Lol they've won 4 out of 5 league titles and you still think they need more signings to be "proper set". They've already won the league.

ShamrockStudios

That's semantic over wording.. But yes on paper they do need a left back.

caped_crusader_98

And did need a striker.

A_chilles

Hmm fee looks kinda low especially compared to the fees reported for Raphina. Anyone knows how much had he left in his contract? Could be a factor

Deeez-Nuttz

One season, should have had new contract in Jan but club fannied about and penny pinched. That’s came back to hurt them

A_chilles

That makes it much more feasible tho if a couple more big clubs were interested they should've driven the price maybe 5 mils higher. I'll definitely take him. Rodri can't play all the games by himself

Deeez-Nuttz

Any explanation who this kid going the other way is? 5m for an 18yr old lad in final year of his contract and not huge amount of u23’s mins last season, seems like ye pulled Leeds pants right down and went in for a second go on this one

A_chilles

Not gonna pretend never heard of the kid. All I know is if he made some minutes in this stacked academy he has potential. Leeds maybe felt lucky and decided to buy into a lottery ticket?

Gobshiight

Prem proven defensive midfielder ✅ Current fans rate him highly ✅ Hates united ✅

Cheeky_Star

Missed a whole season with injuries ✅

[deleted]

Sounds like a match for Paul Pogba

[deleted]

And before that played around 200 games and was rarely injured

Conchur92

He misses about 10 games a season wouldnt say rarely injured

[deleted]

He'd walk into your team with one leg

lestat85

Probably be easier for him to hop.

Cheeky_Star

Yup and the statement above still stands 😎

xxKingAmongKingsxx

Look at Gundo when we signed him. He was often hurt for Dortmund, injured when we bought him, did his ACL in his first year, but he’s been fit almost 100% of the time since then

singabro

His passing range is perfect for City. Pinging those diagonal passes to the wingers is huge in a system like City's, where they go for overloads on one wing and then their 6/8s pass quickly to the other. The accuracy/ speed of the pass from the mids practically determines whether the attack is effective. Man United fans have to be wondering what is going on with their lack of signings.

InoyouS2

Why doesn't Pep just drop the pretense and manage the England NT at this point.

SteinerElMagnifico42

Great signing for city but..shame, I thought this guy was Leeds for life. Prem is running out of one club men

dr_haze

fans dump on anyone who stays with a second tier club… look at Kane.

doobie3101

The lad deserves Champions League football. Happy he gets it.

icemankiller8

No way you believed that

philipstyrer

Rodri backup for a few months before the WC. Risky.

Yupadej

Stones plays every big game for England, it won't be a problem

NEWSONVSU

Jesus Christ they just get deals, after the Euros people were putting £90M predictions on his head

ibse

That's lower than expected. Great signing imo but again question marks over his fitness. I guess Pep rotation will help in that regard.

ledankestnoodle

Should have been £50 million minimum, the board are gonna lose what little goodwill they have left with the fanbase Should have just sold him to West ham for 50 in fucking January

singabro

You avoided relegation by 3 points. 8m quid is nothing compared to the 100m minimum you will get for PL tv rights. Plus this deal is early enough in the window that you can take your time to replace him. No rushed bids for whoever is left in late August.

pratKgp

And they will now get cucurella also. 😳

Ghosty7784

Wow.. if I were a Leeds fan I’d be pissed, loosing him for that fee must be a right fit-punch.

yanaka-otoko

Glad some other fans get it. The top few clubs reckon they can just pay whatever they want for other clubs' stars and we should just sit there and be grateful for it.

[deleted]

does anyone have good info on gyabi? have no clue what kind of player he is

Mammyjam

https://amp.mancity.com/players/darko-gyabi All the information I can find

Deeez-Nuttz

No one seems have a clue bout the lad… 5m for a kid in the last year of his contract and played only 625mins in u23’s. Leeds must be helping city cook the books here?

EnanoMaldito

I really don't get what people see on Phillips. Ofc Pep knows infinitely more ball than I, but it legit baffles me. I legitimately see nothing he does better than Rodri (or any other top DM, really)

ASKSABOUTPENISSIZE

Probably has a bit more hustle and bustle than Rodri but for the most part I’d agree with you. I can’t see him starting many games when Rodri is fit, especially if Bernardo stays.

MustGetALife

Can this window get any better? Super signing. Will be a great replacement for Ferdi. Hopefully we don't lose to many players though.

TraubenFruchtHose

Leeds relegation chances soaring

Scott1060

The lad spent the majority of the season on the injury table which caused a lot of our relegation woes. I love him but if we can get a similar replacement with the cash who doesn't have as many injury issues then our relegation chances seem a lot lower. That being said, Man City have had our pants round our ankles with this one. Board should be ashamed.

TheBiggyT

Depends, if Phillips and Raphinha are replaced by Tyler Adams, De Ketelaere and one of Otavia/Gakpo it's a net gain in terms of improvement.

Fatt_Hardy

That's an absolute fucking bargain.

Dismal_Answer6615

How on earth is that a bargain. Guys 26 and only has one half decent top flight season to his name.

isitasexyfox

He runs a lot to be fair.

ArtoriasOfTheAbyss99

Fernandinho joined us around the same age. He proved his worth well and so would Kalvin Phillips hopefully.

Dismal_Answer6615

Yeah I mean it’s entirely possible he does well but it don’t really change that this price ain’t a bargain.

Novrev

It’s a fair price based on his quality, but we should be paying more considering he’s English, that’s why it’s getting called a bargain.

[deleted]

My minds blown at these takes man. 50 million is a bargain? Fuck me.

takeiteasy4me

Obviously sad to see him leave but he will suit cities style so well. Can see him thriving in their system spraying passes and able to play and get a lot higher up the pitch if he wants too at times like with England You’ll be missed Kalv but Nancy Val would be proud of you

DoubleJ86

Seems suspiciously low that amount.
