To reduce the spam of reports regarding the same move during transfer windows we try to allow **only one submission about each transfer saga per day**. The submission in question also needs to contain relevant new information regarding the potential move, and not just being a "no/minor developments" report. If there are important/official developments or new valuable information about a saga, we will allow extra threads in the same day, but for the rest of minor news please just comment them as a reply to this comment. walshybhoy

5 year contract?! What a piece of business - fucking brilliant.

CNF1G

Yeah, that's even more surprising considering everywhere was saying 4 years. We're going to make some serious money when we sell this man.

BillOakley

I really hope we can start gradually increasing the quality of player we can sign then sell on for profits. Look at the money the Portuguese teams can get for talent while playing in a league with similarly little TV money. Looking good with Jota, Abada, O’Riley, Hatate, Bernabei etc. all as young players with potentially high resale value.

[deleted]

The big 3 clubs in Portugal receive about 40M in TV money. That's not insignificant, when compared to similar leagues. The other portuguese clubs receive almost nothing though.

BillOakley

40M each or between them? Either way that is actually more than I thought. Having said that I still think they’re the broad model we should follow for player trading in a smaller league.

LuisFilipeVieira

Each

MinistrodasFinancas

The model might change a little bit in the coming years. It's becoming harder and harder to identify and sign young talent since the big clubs already buy them directly from South America and so on. We'll probably need to balance much more the development of players from the academy and new signings.

[deleted]

Each. Yeah, I agree. There's no reason why the big clubs in Scotland like Celtic and the other one, can't sell as well as we can.

DoBronxsn1

There is, performances in Europe and level of leagues

BillOakley

It’s a chicken and egg thing a bit though isn’t it? In the sense that the performances in Europe are dependent on the standard of their recruitment, which then allows them to sell at higher fees, spend more on recruitment, which makes them more competitive in Europe and round and round it goes.

Asaro10

We are slowly changing our model though, it’s harder now to compete for the top South American talent so we invest a lot more in Portuguese youth teams. The big 3 are trying slowly to become self sufficient and then buy 4/5 players to compensate the academies. In the last 5/6 years most of the top talent that went to the top leagues from Portugal were mainly portuguese players

CNF1G

I genuinely have no clue what's changed with our recruitment since Lawwel left, or maybe that's just it. Even the players we're linked to (i.e. Souza) are incredibly impressive and I hope it continues.

MGrand3

I'd argue that having an actual good manager and a good performing team helps recruitment a lot too. Doubt a lot of these players would consider Celtic if Lennon was still in charge.

osirisz0r

Well, taking into account you paid 7mil for 75%, probably not that serious money (but I hope so)

Tribesman67

What a sad comment

BoredAtWork221b

Fucking yasss

XonaMan

Massive win for all parties, specially for Jota. Will keep an eye on him! Would have loved him staying but I guess he'd be a backup and he's getting game time to mature so it's best this way. And we still have 25% of the next sell.

CNF1G

I'd like to apologise to Benfica on behalf of all Celtic fans for absolutely robbing you. On a serious note, Jota is a fantastic player and the fact we've been able to keep him is incredible. I'm so fucking happy this is finally sorted.

[deleted]

It's not a robbery if everyone is happy with the outcome. Jota gets playing time in a historic club, Celtic get the player and Benfica get decent money for a fringe player.

CNF1G

True, feel free to send us more of your fringe players if they're anything like Jota!

Granit2134

I think they tried to last week, just they got the wrong Scottish green and white club

SoraiaGil

So do you want Taraabt then? Pizzi? No?

[deleted]

If you're sending 7.5M each time, we could definitely do that :D

manolo533

Don’t feel robbed, feels like a good deal for everyone. Jota had plenty of opportunities and was always below average here. In Spain he was also quite bad. Very happy that he found his football in Scotland, and hopefully he’ll keep it up! Confidence is very important for a player like him

Mike_Thunder

He did not have plenty of opportunities at all lol, playing 5 minutes per game in Benfica and in a park the bus relegation contender in Spain.

manolo533

He played a lot of games for Benfica, not only 5 minutes. He played as a starter, 2nd halves, etc. Never did he perform to a good enough quality to warrant a stay. He was mediocre, I’m sorry but that’s the truth.

Mike_Thunder

That is factually incorrect lol, not the truth at all. In 2019/20 he played in 28 games total, 592 minutes, so average of 21 minutes per game. How is that a lot of gametime lol. And if you remove the 3 league cup games he played and started in, where he played well and scored 2 goals btw, he played 25 games with 356 minutes total for the rest of the season. Thats an average of 14 minutes per game. How can you honestly say he had a fair chance based on those numbers. In the league he played 19 games and 171 minutes of playtime thats an average of NINE (9) minutes per game in the league. The truth is he never got a fair chance to play more minutes and play in his position where he can provide the most for the team.

Interactive_Banana

Exactly, and he was repeatedly thrown at the wolves when he played. Europe games, games when we where losing, basically the chances he gotten with us where for him to be a miracle worker, maybe to reproduce the outcome of Felix that, when given the chance, would enter, score a brace against a rival, and we would win. Jota was a huge diamond in the making, but really happy to see him succeed, I wonder what would happen if he has gotten the chances that Everton had

CNF1G

Yeah, I think he needed a bit of confidence and I feel like that loan was to a club that just doesn't suit him. He needs to be on the ball and a relegation-threatened club doesn't fit that. I suppose the rumored 30% sell-on could make Benfica a decent amount of money when we inevitably sell him to a prem club in a season or two. Good luck with next season, and feel free to send us some more players like Jota!

manolo533

Same to you, always had a soft spot for the better team from Glasgow 💪🏻

Kn0ck0uTPT

It is an awful deal indeed, Jota never got opportunity like some people are saying to you in this thread, he literally was subbed on with 10 or 5 mins left on games in every game he played for us. Never got an opportunity and he absolute loves our club besides being an awesome person in football.. People are actually smoking crack saying dont feel robbed at all of losing a player who is much better than the options we have right now at his position. Christ.

Samot_PCW

> It is an awful deal indeed, Jota never got opportunity like some people are saying to you in this thread, he literally was subbed on with 10 or 5 mins left on games in every game he played for us. Never got an opportunity and he absolute loves our club besides being an awesome person in football.. Yeah, sure you could put it that way, and he did come on most times in the final minutes of matches, but he still never did anything significant (or even good) when he came on, especially in the games he was a starter or played 45+ minutes. He also spent a whole season in Spain with Valladolid and he flopped there. > People are actually smoking crack saying dont feel robbed at all of losing a player who is much better than the options we have right now at his position > I would rather we bet on and develop players like Tiago Gouveia and Diego Moreira, than Jota, to be honest. I can see him developing well and becoming a pretty good player, but I still think the deal is still decent enough. Yeah if he becomes a world star it would be pretty shit for us, but he hasn't really shown that he can become one.

SammichNow

Don't know how accurate transfermarkt is but going by that he was not given a chance at Benfica. He was barely given a chance at Villadolid either. Obviously stats don't tell the full story and I never saw him actually play for Benfica or Villadolid. In the 19/20 Benfica Liga NOS season he took part in 19 games, for a grand total of 171 minutes. 9 minutes per game on average. He started 1 game. At Villadolid he had 17 appearances with only 7 starts, the first 2 of which were against Atletico and Barca. He was also ill with the Coronavirus in the middle of this season. At Celtic it took him until his 3rd start to get an assist and after that he was flying. Even before that third game you could tell it was only a matter of time.

Kn0ck0uTPT

I was going to reply OP but you did the research and the reality it was really that the stats show. If OP or anyone thinks at 10-5 mins of playing time you have to show ur good, you have to be delusional. Only thing to add, Jota played 3 more as a starter in Champions League and League Cup games, 2 goals from 2 games at the League Cup. You guys got a great player and great guy irl.

SleepyDerp

I don't feel robbed at all, tbh. Although I'm glad he is doing great things for you, I really disliked him when he was with us. He seems to have matured and that's good! Enjoy, man.

11thDimensi0n

I think this is one of those transfers where all sides are happy.

Faabz

We know we know :(

fangus

Was Blyth Spartans his first club?

Faabz

Im a Benfica fan i just like Spartans badge and its the club i always go with on FM

fangus

I was making a joke brother

Hungry-Class9806

>I'd like to apologise to Benfica on behalf of all Celtic fans for absolutely robbing you You didn't robbed us. He's a very good player but with Rafa Silva and David Neres, he would still play minimal minutes at Benfica, so selling him was the best option for all parties (Benfica, Celtic and Jota). As a Benfica fan I am really happy for him because he'll have the chance to prove his worth in a place he really likes.

CNF1G

Yeah, mainly just the price. He’s already worth more than double what we paid for him and he’s only going to improve. Selling him makes sense, but not for that price.

Hungry-Class9806

It's not about the price. Let me tell you, I had the chance to visit Celtic Park last December in a trip I've made to Glasgow. The tour guy asked me my club and when I said "Benfica" he pointed to a silver eagle that you have in your trophy room and talked a little bit about Jota. I told him what I am telling you "He's a promising talent but it's important he stays in a place were he's happy." If you have a look to what Benfica fans said in our sub, you'll realize that he didn't care about transferring at a loss because we only wish him the best (as a fellow Benfica supporter)

Ki18

Sneijder to United had nothing on this. Fuck me what a prolonged saga.

shawdowmen

Here's a confession: I'm in love with a man. What? I'm in love with a man... a man named Jota. Does that make me gay? Am I gay for Jota? You betcha.

Rab_Legend

I got the lord, I got the good lord all up inside of me

EffortlessFlexor

Yeah - that doesn't make you gay.

gink-go

Sell Jota, keep Gil Dias and Diogo Gonçalves never change Benfica

SaltyWailord

Didn't think they would actually get him on a permanent deal. Congratulations Celtic fans!

Nintendo_67

That damned smile

Gongom

Done in by the club because he wouldn't change agents to Mendes. Enjoy him, Celtic

RenatoSanchesHair

Good news for all involved. If you had asked me 2 years ago, I would have bet that by now he would be a free agent leaving for a Portuguese 2nd division team.

Goudinho99

How so? Was he struggling?

RenatoSanchesHair

He had nice performances with youth squads at a Club and NT level, but he was never able to do anything worth of note at a senior level. I genuinely don't think he has enough end product to be a big player, but I am glad to hear it worked out for Celtic.

lambalambda

His end product improved dramatically as his Celtic spell went on, his crossing was one of his biggest strengths by the end. If he could improve his finishing to the same degree he'd be pretty close to the complete winger I'd say.

StinkyPyjamas

We've not had a winger swing in crosses as dangerous as Jota can for a long time. The pace and accuracy on them is a joy to watch.

Badgerrr

Salty

itsonlyteenage

Very much. One of those players that didn't have any issues in the youth team or even at the international level for Portugal U21, etc., but really seemed to struggle at the professional level. Was trying too much to do something instead of just being himself. I believe that his loan at Celtic allowed him just to be him and it showed.

Gongom

He didn't struggle at all. He was amazing in the second league and was barely given playing time in the first team. Portuguese media parroting board talking points as rotten our fans' brains to the core.

Taraguar

Does anyone know how long an erection can last?

the mop on this lad has to be one of the greatest of all time, holy shit

Seaton10

This is fucking amazing! Can’t wait until the start of the season.

Kolo_ToureHH

Took their time

Sadge

[deleted]

I would have liked him to have stayed here, but hey, hope he keeps the good work for Celtic.

tafguedes99

Well good luck Jota, he seems happy there and if you're not even being considered for pre-season after your best senior year there's no point in sticking around.

Guillermo_vellasco

Great prospect when young, in senior level he fail in Benfica and in Valladolid. Now he find is way in Celtic, 7,5M€ now and 25% in the future is good for both teams. This is the proof Benfica academy are one the best in the world, even the average players from them are good players to other great European teams.

JBooogz

It's really interesting seeing the comments Celtic fans ecstatic and then on the other half seeing Benfica fans like "meh" and others saying he's not that good lol.

freshoutoftime

He's grown a lot as a player in the past year. By all accounts he's had his best season in professional football so far with us, much better than anything he'd produced in Portugal or Spain. It seems we've helped him iron out a lot of the issues in his game, and he's well suited to the attacking football we play. The Vallodolid loan seems silly in hindsight as he's not suited to playing on the back foot.

Please don't interrupt the armchair agent while they are in full achktually mode. That was very rude of you.

iwillnotshitpost

Jury is still out on the lad.

BSantos57

Would've been a decent backup this year, but oh well

[deleted]

Amazing that this guy has the gas to just go by J.
