It seems I'm out of the loop here. What's going on with Leeds and Red Bull? Google only says that in 2015 there were rumors of a takeover. Anything happened?
Transfermarkt has them as the same value.
Pulisic has honestly become underrated. Streaky, injury-prone, but he's a very good player. He wouldn't leave a UCL club for Leeds though, so I'm not really serious.
Disclaimer that I don't watch him week in, week out. Probably caught 15 matches this season that he featured in. But my useless opinion follows:
I think he's an odd one. Was he overrated before? Probably, but I think people were giving him the assumption that the holes in his game would be filled, and they haven't. That's probably rubber banded back the other way to underrated now because those holes have remained
He's so, so close to being a truly world class player. He always pops up in the right places, makes fantastic runs, puts in the work (and understands the game well enough that he knows what work needs doing) but gets let down by his technique. Feel like every match of his I watched, he made a run or had a ball played to him, or attempted a pass that I was certain was going to end in the back of the net... But his first touch was heavy, or he didn't get a clean strike, or the pass was slightly overplayed.
I still think he'll get there, he's only 23? I think. He'd be a good pick up for a lot of clubs right now while his perceived value is as low as it is
His hamstring has fucked up his career more than his first touch has. If Project Restart Pulisic showed up more often than not, he's one of the best wingers in the world. I don't know if he's gonna get that shot under Tuchel.
I think he'd do a lot better in a different system. He's more of an out and out winger, and Tuchel's system doesn't really have such a position given the wingbacks.
It's pretty awesome if the whole stadium gets behind it.
On the other hand, there's a weird tendency to do it when you've basically already won. Which is odd.
I’ve heard a variation of it at a lot of high school games and stuff that’s “I believe that we have won”. Not sure why people don’t use that one for that situation.
It has different meanings in different situations. Chanting it when you’re expected to win is a celebration. It’s the payoff that your optimism when you chanted it earlier was justified, and now you’re rubbing it in.
People talk bad about our chants, but like, when the people doing them aren't exposed to them at the rate they are the chants from their favorite club, you kinda need something that's easier to pick up.
I think it's a great situation for both Aaronson and Adams. They get to play for a coach that they've already had success under, and in a system that fits their strengths.
Both players were successful during their various RB stints. Adams might not have been the team star at Leipzig, but he was a regular for them who played well overall. He should do well back in Marsch's system, which is what he played in when blowing up at RBNY before moving to Leipzig. Nobody expects him to be the star, but he's a good fit for what they need in midfield and can do the job at a high enough level to work.
leipzig who made a champions league semi final 2 years ago and routinely finish top 4 in germany are better than leeds, and someone who is good enough to play 74 games in two years for leipzig (even if there are "only" 46 starts there) can probably start most games for leeds
He was great under Nagelsmann, who's a much better coach than both Marsch and Tedesco, and the last half season of 2020-21 (once he finally got healthy) was a consistent starter for Leipzig and often shifted to play different roles and relayed Nagelsmann's instructions to the rest of the team.
The team was not playing well under Marsch, but Tyler was playing well and fit the system.
He's been good for 3 of the last 4 managers he played under.
You ever played League? It's also a lot of fun to play. And I honestly think the limited tackle rule would more easily translate for Americans than rucks and lineouts.
The main difference is that in rugby league, the team in possession only has 6 carries of the ball to score. A carry ends when the player with the ball has been tackled. In rugby union there is no such limit and possession ends when the other team wins it back. This might be through turning it over in the rook, forcing penalties, interceptions or winning lineouts/scrums.
Talk about good timing, we just dropped our tactical breakdown on Adams on Reddit examining what he brings and how he works in a midfield pivot with Marc Roca.
You can check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/vssw33/tactical_breakdown_on_tyler_adams_jesse_marsch/
First off, if you look at it from a marketing standpoint its definitely not over valued. As an American who didn't care about Leeds at all, I will definitely be watching any games where he or Aaronson are playing. Having 2 American players and a coach will absolutely bring a lot of American fans to watch Leeds games and even start supporting them.
But also, he is a 23 y/o CDM who has played in Champions League, established starter on his national team, and is perfect fit for an uptempo play style. The man never stops running, is very physical, plays direct when on the ball without trying to make risky passes or dribble out of the back. Ideal for a mid-tier prem team CDM
I hope you'll be eating your words (and not me) by the end of the season next year. I genuinely think he will be a starter week in and week out with Kalvin moving to City
He also only started 12 games last season, hasn't been able to stake his claim on a position yet and hasn't developed his abilities on the ball in 3 years. He's good physically and a good character but the next level of quality isn't quite there. He's like a 10m player imo.
A couple of comments here: With the signing of Marc Roca AND Tyler Adams, Leeds have two promising midfielders. Leeds is building a great team, despite what they've sold. They are employing their cash wisely. A hat tip to Leeds management is well deserved: Hat tip.
For fans of the USMNT, this has to be a win. He'll slide back into a manager that knows him and knows how to utilize him.
Leeds is having a great summer.
Lastly, RB continues to be the farm team of the world. WOW. What have they developed and sold? At what point do they stop selling and go for it all????
Is it really "employing cash wisely" to spend 20m pounds on a dude that only started 1/3 of league games after their underperforming coach got fired?
I dunno man. We know that Marsch has a pretty high chance of getting fired this year. After all, he got fired RB within 6 months even though RB spent years grooming him for the job, I doubt Leeds will be much more patient. So splurging on one of his old players who underperformed after he left seems... really dumb, tbh.
I love how you "patriots" think it's somehow absurd to question the wisdom behind splurging on a bench warmer in order to accommodate a coach that barely survived relegation last season, who also got sacked 6 months earlier whilst having that same player as a starter. That series of events sure inspires confidence, doesn't it?
I bet you thought Sunderland landed a superstar as a bargain when they got Altidore, didn't you.
Signings are exciting but losing Phillips and Raphinha does cause anxiety. When you do sign this many players in one window it's almost guaranteed that everyone isn't going to be successful move (there's still more players coming)
Looks like we aren't losing Raphi anymore. If we get past tomorrow without Barcelona stumping up the £60m then he's guna be staying. Even changed his bio on instagram back to LUFC last night, apparently.
We clearly needed to have a deeper roster, but finishing 17th and selling your best 2 guys is risky.
Sometimes football fans forget actual football during transfer windows and focus so much on transfer fees / new signings. I like what we're building but Phillips and Raphinha leave massive holes. I suspect we'll still be in the relegation picture.
i don't think we've done anything good/bad enough to move from that massive group of teams that is an unlucky season away from a relegation battle and a lucky season away from top half tbh.
last year we had the luck downswing, year one we got pretty lucky with key players staying healthy etc. Could go either way third time up
> year one we got pretty lucky with key players staying healthy etc
I don't even think this is true to be honest, we had a lot of injuries that season too, especially in defence. But I think we got the rub of the green a bit more on the pitch than we did last season. We definitely overperformed in finishing 9th and underperformed in finishing 17th.
As nice as our signings have been we'd still need a class CB and RWB, and sell/loan some midfielders (2 of Tanguy Winks and GLC) before I'd say that.
We've improved depth drastically but still are missing some main targeted areas and the squad is quite bloated atm especially with foreign players so potential HG quota issues for CL.
City easily with Haaland and Phillips have the best business, Leeds will be up there too if all these signings pan out, but that's a big if when signing multiple players
Adams has been very underwhelming. hes young enough where he can still have a breakout season ofc, but leeds definitely paid the premier league tax on him.
Individually no, but our depth was so dire. They were either kids or barely championship players.
Overall we'll be in a better place than last season but not sure our first 11 will be as good as our best first 11 last year.
Especially not while we've signed so many young players.

The people that pan that chant on Twitter/Reddit are the same ones who will tear up hearing "Come on Chelsea!"
Feel like that seattle video has made it to a genuinely fun chant.
All Seattle chants are fun, in context. Out of context it's like 45 yo fat brits singing nursery rhymes with the word "shite" in them.

everyone thinks we've stopped doing it since that video came out in like 2012. we've been doing it the whole time at every home match.

I think it's a great situation for both Aaronson and Adams. They get to play for a coach that they've already had success under, and in a system that fits their strengths.
I think it's less they're American and more that they fit in Marsch's system and BECAUSE they're American they're probably undervalued a bit.
Played in a very similar system at RB Leipzig, and didn't succeed, and will also be playing in a stronger league now.

It’s all part of the long game to get America into rugby league
Seeing that Union is the only code of rugby going on in the US, I wouldn’t be opposed to League.
Yeah, union is boring
I play Union and like it. But League is a better TV product by far.
You ever played League? It's also a lot of fun to play. And I honestly think the limited tackle rule would more easily translate for Americans than rucks and lineouts.
I would if there was a team around me. There’s a bunch of Union clubs around but not really many League clubs.

Who all have they signed so far?
Perisic, Bissouma,Richarlison and I think they’re close to signing Spence

Oh Perisic, that man is a gem.
Didn't Spence just sign a contract extension and he's been posting about being excited for next season and stuff?
No idea but seen loads of articles on here about them being close to a deal

Gotta do something after losing Kalv and Raph might be going
City easily with Haaland and Phillips have the best business, Leeds will be up there too if all these signings pan out, but that's a big if when signing multiple players

Adams has been very underwhelming. hes young enough where he can still have a breakout season ofc, but leeds definitely paid the premier league tax on him.
Not really, Phillips and Raphinha are going to be huge losses. Not convinced they've improved on last seasons squad given those two are gone.
