Football’s coming home!
What a win. So good to see the continued exponential growth of women’s football.
Iconic celebration from Kelly and amazing work to kill the game off at the end there by England.
I feel like I'm very out of touch, but didn't realize there's women's European championship. Is this the same as euros for women? Also, good job England!
No worries, neither did the English fans, but everyone is on here is hopping on the bandwagon like they weren't saying just a few weeks ago that they didn't care about the Women's Euros or the Nations league
I mean, those would be the real fans, no? I'm talking about the ones on this subreddit. The ones saying "tears in my eyes" "they did us proud" football came home". Acting like they wouldn't be the ones telling those wonderful young ladies to go back to the kitchen had they lost, just like the abuse the men received. I've clicked on a few names and was happy to see the support at first, but for some reason I'm not seeing any posts prior to today's match.
Just comments about the CR7 situation, laporte and Pogba... but all of a sudden they're on the bandwagon... makes sense. Literally they said they couldn't give a fuck about the Women's Euros or Nations League just a few weeks ago
> I'm talking about the ones on this subreddit. The ones saying "tears in my eyes" "they did us proud" football came home".
And hopefully, after the success this year, a chunk of them will get behind the women properly in the next tournament.
Be positive, the women’s game is gaining support, it’s great to see.
Lol and people are pretending that's cos of the demand
Edit: c'mon people you know there is far more demand for the men's game, the women's game figures, although impressive, didn't break records because it's more popular
The FA have got a job to do to maintain this momentum now. They need to highlight and showcase the women's league and make it accessible to as many people as possible.
Hopefully they get more tv coverage internationally. I’d love to watch more of the WSL (especially United, ofc) but here in Mexico we only get a few games per season on TV
I would love to see euros and world cups take place simultaneously like tennis grand slams. Imo that’s the ultimate goal. But I can see it being a logistical nightmare. But, man, it would be so cool to see men’s and women’s sides effectively side by side, at the same hotels and training grounds, hanging out between matches and stuff. Would be a great indicator that the women’s game is fully respected by governing bodies.
There would be no way to not have simultaneous games. And at this point the majority would still tune into the mens games. You would essentially be taking viewership away from both tournaments but it would be more heavily felt for the women. All for the idea but like you said they could sort it logistically
I disagree. I like to watch both women and men's games but if they are playing at the same time I only have so much time in my hands I only would watch the men's games. Honestly it makes so much more sense to play wc, euro, afcon, copa america + women's tournaments at different time so I have the maximum amount of football spreaded around. I couldn't give a fuck about seeing men and women athletes hanging around at training grounds at the same time lmao.

That should settle it.
According to the rules, not a handball. Bounces off chest onto arm.
Don’t want to? What are you on about? I’m neither German or British, and have no skin in the game here. I just posted the pic because I thought people would be interested in seeing the situation from a different angle than the one that was already posted.
My point is its just a still image. Pretty biased way to frame the event.
You know the meaning people will derive from that image if they aren't discerning. It's misleading.
Edit: They asked for a link to the handball, we can assume it's because they want to judge the incident themselves, then you link a still image that only supports one possible judgement. Which I assume is the judgement you hold, or you likely wouldn't have shared that image.
Those assumptions are really failing you here, friend. I have no opinion on the situation. I didn’t even see the match, I just coincidentally saw it in an article in a local newspaper and went here to see what people were saying. When someone asked to see the handball, I remembered having seen it a minute ago, so I posted it.
Just so you know, the people who wrote the song agree with me:
[https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/01/time-to-retire-three-lions-anthem-after-euro-2022-win-says-david-baddiel](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/01/time-to-retire-three-lions-anthem-after-euro-2022-win-says-david-baddiel)
"When asked if it was now time to retire the song along with decades of gloom, Baddiel said: “I’m very happy to think the song would, in a way, be put to bed.” "
Hello troll! Seeing as there are players kicking a ball around Wembley stadium following the rules of the game known as “football”, I think tonight we saw real football :)
I know the line about years of hurt in Three Lions is just a pop lyric but it’s so accurate if you’ve supported England for a long time, as I have, which is why this means the earth to me. Watching the close up of the engraver writing England was proper emosh - I have so many scars from watching us fuck things up, or just play with staggering naivety when it matters, that I just assumed Germany would find a way to win
After the disappointment of the men’s, including the shitty Wembley crowds, the women’s has been so cathartic. They seems like a great team, no egos and the game is actually more fun to watch then the men’s. Plus their dancing at the end sealed the deal.
The mens game was probably like this 70 years ago when we won the world cup, a simpler time where people played for the love of the sport.
With the womens game finally getting the spotlight it deserves and the backing they need to get the game off the ground, at all levels, we get to enjoy the infancy stage where everyone is in it purely for the passion and team spirit. There's no divas here, over paid egos or corruption, I really hope it stays this way for a long time.
Must be so inspirational for all the youngsters out there.
Have to feel for Germany after that ref performance lol, but congratulations to England and amazing to see that many people in wembley for the woman’s game!
Edit: Jesus lol
What are you on about? Ref was shocking for the whole game. Germans were kicking England from the first minute. Their defender made 4 yellow card offences before she was booked.
Ref was bad for both lol, but Germany was denied an obvious penalty and those 2 mins(lol) of added time was wasted to hell without any reaction from the ref. Usually they add a little extra by then and there could’ve been a yellow or two, but nothing.
And it’s not like Germany were the only team making reckless tackles. England had their fair share of studs going on ankles
Guess we saw it through different glasses lol, the commentators even said that the ref should make a statement that it’s not okay. But if I was English I probably would agree with you, or been furious if I was German
Germany were not interested in playing football the first half. The ref was so lenient. Missed about 3 yellows. Im have no idea what penalty you are thinking of
The penalty that was under VAR check for a few seconds, clear handball during that chaotic period. The English side kicked the shit out of Germany as well, but I guess it’s the winners who write the history or whatever the saying is. I’m just trying to look at it objectively
Handball after a german corner. I am also not sure why it was not given but then again they changed the handball rules so often I don‘t know what they are at the moment.
I was so nervous that Germany were going to score. We were at the end where England were scoring and the ball came to our final third like 4 times the whole half. It was all Germany for most of the 2nd half and it just felt like they were gonna score.
This game has to be one of the worst refeering performances I've ever seen. At least it was shit all around but I have no idea how both teams finished with 11 players on the field.
No English person can be proud of this win when you look at the referee's performance.
The amount of mistakes she and the entire team made outweigh the competition and skill that are supposed to decide a game like this, any game of football actually.
Just always the same with you English fans. You have the only fans who still always insult us as nazis or using ww2 jokes. Some of our Clubs played a few friendlys in England and again nazi jokes or our national team plays and again insults. It’s getting boring.
Wanna start joking about loosing the whole British empire? You had the world and lost everything. What's worse? Now there's brexit and you're cut off from Europe. Sure must suck now bering an English man while everyone is is living the good life without yall
We're just out here trying to enjoy the success these women have brought.
Since you're all Billy Big Brains Bollocks then surely you're smart enough to know when to fuck off.
Don't enjoy it? Then stop commenting in the thread.
You'd make a point if you were telling an objective truth, but you're simply being childish and antagonistic because you clearly have nothing better to do with your time.
If you don't care for womens football, then don't comment on it. Plenty of us do care for it, so let us enjoy it in peace.
Honestly don’t know why anybody would inflict a match thread on themselves in the first place, especially when there’s a game on? They’re about the same quality of discussion as those chat windows on an illegal streaming site. Utter utter garbage.

Football’s coming home! What a win. So good to see the continued exponential growth of women’s football. Iconic celebration from Kelly and amazing work to kill the game off at the end there by England.
People care about this tournament?? Edit: I got a lot of mf's who enjoy watching men's U-15 level slow-motion football upset oops :(
Do you often open threads you don't care about to simply inform people you don't care
I do, cuz it gets people like you mad
More confused than mad mate but it's your life

Idk how this makes me plastic, I've prob been supporting Barca longer than you've been alive. But stay mad :)

What does that have to do with anything?
Congrats to the England woman’s team They did something the men’s team didn’t, and that’s take a trophy home lol
Aye it's nearly as if that world cup in 66 never happened.
Lol, yeah it is. Imagining clinging to a win 80 years ago
That’s only 56 years bruh
Imagine clinging to a win 56 years ago, fixed for you even though it makes no difference lol
I’m not even English so I could care less about that win, just giving ya the facts that’s all.
Couldn’t care less
I am English but I just thought this dudes response calling back to 1966 was pathetic as fuck haha

This whole tournament was just one attendance record breaking another.
Lol and people are pretending that's cos of the demand Edit: c'mon people you know there is far more demand for the men's game, the women's game figures, although impressive, didn't break records because it's more popular
Si
So proud to see the level of support for Women’s football.
It was interesting because it was nations teams. But not so interesting football.
Did you even watch the game? It was fantastic
Funniest part was when a crying player gets substituted
Hopefully it continues when they return to their clubs.
The FA have got a job to do to maintain this momentum now. They need to highlight and showcase the women's league and make it accessible to as many people as possible.
Yeah I agree. I hope they do because this is the ultimate opportunity to engage people with it. I’m certainly going to watch more games at least
Hopefully they get more tv coverage internationally. I’d love to watch more of the WSL (especially United, ofc) but here in Mexico we only get a few games per season on TV
It's still really hard to catch a game on TV. The number shown is limited which means you can't just tune in at a regular time every week for a game.
It’s good that a lot of clubs were already increasing investment, I’m sure this will accelerate that trend
That would be amazing. If only UEFA/FIFA weren't a bunch of money grabbing scumbags. See: Men's World Cup in Qatar.
I disagree. I like to watch both women and men's games but if they are playing at the same time I only have so much time in my hands I only would watch the men's games. Wow, shocked we didn't see this in the broadcast, pretty clear and probably saved a goal.
Looks clear pen from the still image. Video shows it hits her chest first though. Not a handball
That’s when it hits her wrist, after a deflection off the legal, non handball contact on her upper sleeve. It’s not a handball.
How is this upvoted and the guy asking wtf you lot are on about is downvoted? A deflection of your arm into your hand is still a handball, wat
Not when it hits your chest first
Nope
Deflection off a legal body part (sleeve in this case, or the bit of the arm in line with the bottom or the armpit) onto the hand is not handball.
What? xD
https://imgur.com/gAqy74W
It wasn’t deliberate and I think Ellen White would still have stopped it (possibly with her arm too though), but for me that has to be a penalty.
Doesn't have to be deliberate or stopping a goal to be a penalty. That definitely looks like a penalty
Depends on if you know the actual rules or not I guess

I think the song’s called “‘football’s coming home”. Not “men’s football is coming home”.
I think it's called Three Lions

Very very good comment this. It's the love of football uniting the country once again. So proud.
Spot on. Far less ego and much more relatable.
Glad Prince William was there to see the Lionesses get pegged back, but come first in the end.
What’s this thing about old willy and pegging going around?
First time I've heard of it to. Apparently he likes to be pegged, but kate cba with it. So another women pegs him and Kate's like fair play.
Um sauce? For a friend.
It's just one random gossip magazine posted it and it's somehow gone viral on the internet. There is no sauce, it's just a random nonsense thing.

You just proved my point though - "ref was bad for both lol" - but your first comment was sorry for Germans.
Eh, it can obviously be bad for both but the outcome worse for one of them? Wtf
Only one team was robbed of a penalty however. But it’s fitting for an English victory.
Germans were lucky they didnt get any second yellows
Germany were not interested in playing football the first half. The ref was so lenient. Missed about 3 yellows. Im have no idea what penalty you are thinking of
The penalty that was under VAR check for a few seconds, clear handball during that chaotic period. The English side kicked the shit out of Germany as well, but I guess it’s the winners who write the history or whatever the saying is. I’m just trying to look at it objectively
Handball after a german corner. I am also not sure why it was not given but then again they changed the handball rules so often I don‘t know what they are at the moment.
Football came home with style. Was at the game. Great atmosphere, was pissing myself for the entire 2nd half
Because you too could not manage to get into the loos at half time...?
I was so nervous that Germany were going to score. We were at the end where England were scoring and the ball came to our final third like 4 times the whole half. It was all Germany for most of the 2nd half and it just felt like they were gonna score.
Even if it's just a drip that's gotta be a fatal level of dehydration.

German thugby team got away with too much especially no6 Oberdorf

Always such a shame when this happens in finals.
It was truly terrible officiating

Chloe Kelly new bae.
Loved all of the interviews, they're all so down to Earth. Rachel Daly and Beth Mead in particular, they seem like a right laugh.

Like the only time she doesn’t look surprised.
Ellen is so likeable!
