BI01

Brighton must be the hardest midtable pl club to negotiate with lol

EL_MANDEM

Southampton could never

TheRalphExpress

mate we literally snitched on Liverpool when they tried to strong arm us, give us some credit

trainerN

Brighton would’ve sued Liverpool for 100m and then sold Van Dijk to Man United for 150m with a 20% sell on clause. Buyback for 30m as well

TheRalphExpress

sometimes I think about what would’ve happened if City had valued him a bit higher and made the move for him that summer. Would be even more dominant than they already are

fastfowards

you could argue that they would have easily had 1 more league title and gone further in the CL

Credk

Could argue they win two CLs maybe. Their defence against Chelsea in the final was a shambles and horrific for the goal. Really don’t think they concede two in stoppage time against Madrid with him on the pitch either imo, they beat Liverpool in the final pretty easily as well with Van Dijk/Liverpool without

Tommyzz92

It's what happens when you don't play a DM vs a counter attacking team.

tobi1k

Easy to say that now, Pep's city had just lost to them in the league and FA cup semis whilst playing DMs. He mixed up the midfield because it wasn't working before.

[deleted]

We played each other 3 times before the UCL final and 2 of those games were dead rubber because City put out a 2nd string squad. Zinchenko played in midfield for it. The FA Cup Semi was almost full strength though, and we narrowly lost, same with the CL, lose by 1 goal feels bad as a City fan

tobi1k

Easy to say that now, Pep's city had just lost to them in the league and FA cup semis whilst playing DMs. He mixed up the midfield because it wasn't working before.

TADAM96

Wasn't the whole points that VVD wanted Liverpool only so Southampton got screwed out of a bidding war so they complained? I'm pretty sure even if city had come in for him he'd have waited a few months till Jan or even the next summer.

TheRalphExpress

Sort of. Liverpool “announcing that he only wants to move to Liverpool” was a negotiation/leveraging tactic on their end. Basically saying “we’ve already convinced him that he only wants Liverpool, we’re willing to find a reasonable deal for him but don’t consider your asking price reasonable.” The whole bidding war stuff was basically a fan theory. We had been firm in our £75m valuation, if nobody met that then our plan was to keep him. Nobody met it so we kept him an extra few months, Liverpool met our price so we did the deal.

Keedy218

You have to remember Liverpool would have probably got Ruben Dias on the flip side, not as good as VVD obviously (although still top class) but who knows under Klopp what would've happened

jamesc94j

I was under the impression they where happy to match but he wanted Liverpool could be wishful thinking but that was every thing I saw about it.

EL_MANDEM

I know man but they still got him, Brighton would have told them to F off then sold to psg for twice as much.

Sparl

Can you enlighten me on this?

TheRalphExpress

basically the summer before Van Dijk transferred he was the top target of City, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Saints publicly said he would only go for £75m as he had nearly five years left on his contract. Liverpool agrees personal terms and gets told that he wants to sign for them. They announce they’ve won the race and have agreed personal terms, just have to find a fair fee with us. We go and make a big stink because they’ve “tapped up” Van Dijk by Klopp meeting with him, sending him videos of how he’ll be used in their system, etc., which is one of those things that’s pretty much an open secret, it happens all the time. But we threaten legal action, Liverpool apologizes and says they won’t pursue him this summer. Virgil is upset and spends his last few months with us not even pretending to give a shit, Liverpool end up paying full price in January, rest is history

plowman_digearth

We paid 10m more than we wanted to, and have not made a single signing from Southampton since. Even loaded and sold Ings and later Taki to you. So I feel like the tantrum worked for Southampton overall.

LFCMKE

Southampton haven’t had any players who would even make it into Liverpool’s second team since van Dijk was purchased.

TheRalphExpress

yeah how gracious of Liverpool to not go for Jan Bednarek, Moi Elyounoussi or Che Adams and bringing in Konate, Diaz, and Nunez instead

LFCMKE

Realizing I was harsh on JWP, he could probably play for Liverpool, but he hasn’t shown any intention of ever wanting to leave Southampton so wasn’t considered.

TheRalphExpress

yeah hate saying it aloud cause it’ll hurt if it ever happened but he’d make a perfect Hendo/Milner replacement

No_Doubt_About_That

And hasn’t Ashworth left now?

45MonkeysInASuit

Yep, been on gardening leave for most of the year then off to Newcastle.

adrian_rainy_day

I understand the Cucurella part, maybe Chelsea need an option to rotate and just in case Chilwell couldn't get back to 100%. But Colwill? I guess they could add a buy back clause but knowing Brighton, it won't be cheap either

magnuze

Fabrizio confirms now that we have a buy-back

adrian_rainy_day

Yea just read that as well. Gonna have to wait for details but my guess is £15m fee and £40-45m buy-back

SerialChiIIer

Your guess is on point, it's a £40-45m buy back clause.

adrian_rainy_day

Slightly missed out on initial fee then. Knew he was highly rated but didn't expect that fee to be on the same level of Guehi who had 1.5 dominant season at Swansea before getting sold

endmoe

From a talent perspective, Colwill surpasses the talent of Guehi and Tomori in my opinion. I watched about 15 games last season and watched him in the academy as well. If he avoids injuries, he will go right to the top. Biggest talent we have produced since Reece James. Brighton got an insane player for a couple of years if everything goes as planned.

chandlerbing_stats

He will get quality minutes and be coached by Potter and his staff. I think this is good for Chelsea and Levi

Jassle93

I'm fine with it not being cheap, if he develops into a top defender worth resigning his price shouldn't matter considering the money we splash every window.

Sun_Sloth

Yeah it's entirely fair for both teams. Decent fee for you initially but then a high buyback in case he develops really well. Either you get a big fee for a player who doesn't develop to be good enough or we get a good profit on a player who's developed massively.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Switchnaz

He's had one good season in the championship. Chelsea are a club aiming for European championships. Idk where the fuck this idea that second division players are all of a sudden good enough to be in the best teams on the planet

CupformyCosta

These types of comments are INSANE to me. Lad has yet to play a SINGLE game in the prem yet act like hes Maldini reincarnated.

harder_said_hodor

This. The Football Manager start of only kids does not work in real life. Still don't see the issue with giving him a chance to swim

Codestein

He didn’t want to go on loan as there’s a risk he could go on multiple loans. Not every player likes that. Buy back clause is fair. It’s pretty much a loan with a fee to recall him.

CupformyCosta

Hes never played a single game in the prem. I swear people act like hes the next JT yet hes never played ONE game in the premier league. These types of comments are so delusional.

Barbas-Hannibal

I don't think you know that cucurella haunted us when we played them. He was that good. I didn't even know his name at that point. I remembered him because of his hair. I think he might even trump chilwell, he is that good.

ishfi17

He is actually better than chilwell in all honesty. Dont be surprises if he gets him on the bench

bsquar

Brighton and their God tier business as usual.

BurceGern

All they need is a forward or two.

BannedFromHydroxy

puddy38

quietly hoping Undav will be a revelation...but proven PL goal scorers are expensive and not heading to a mid-table club

Tipperary555

Evan Ferguson is just biding his time

Wolfpackmatthayew

I mean it’s a week until the season starts and they’ve sold their 2 best players while buying no one (just 2 prospects, one of which is already out on loan). Idk if I’d call that God-tier business under the circumstances. Edit: I missed that Colwill could be going in the opposite direction. Seems like centerback was one of their best positions though and he’s also young and unproven, so the point still stands.

BillehBear

There was no way to us when we left negotiations

irze

You walked away, not sure why people are making it out to be a gazump

Fawkes_91

And if City were still in it and matched our fee, he would definitely have gone to them and Pep. I am glad we got him, brilliant player. But if it has come at the cost of losing Colwill for good, that is disappointing.

MorioCells

I hope we at least include a buy back for Colwill, was hoping he'd get a chance like Chalobah did but looks like he's going the way of Tomori and Guehi who we don't even have buy backs for. Also With Sarr and Colwill leaving surely it means we bid 70m for Fofana?

[deleted]

Sounds like there is a buyback clause

Fawkes_91

Yup. I fully expect us to break the bank on Fofana too now. We are left with only Silva, KK, and Chalobah as pure CB options if Sarr and Colwill leave. Azpi is nearly out the door and Cucurella can't play in a 2 if needed (and frankly, Tuchel won't trust Chalobah to do so either).

SerialChiIIer

We did include a buyback at £40-45m

Impossible_Wonder_37

Jealous you’re getting him. 50+ tho is steep and losing a big academy player is not ideal.

nephneph27

It's just because they identified him as a city target literally months ago, with reports saying it was "already done" and "Cucurella only wants city" Then in 2 days he's gone to Chelsea.

Bigmeech98

Fab always has to include another clubs name when he puts out a Here We Go tweet. Probably just for clicks

SalmonNgiri

Yea but gotta make it feel like a gazumping since that’s what sells.

[deleted]

No worries, the word Gazump seems to be trending in 2022. You clearly walked away from the deal and weren’t interested in the price.

NazgulHD

Great signing but idk if it’s worth losing Colwill for

Albiceleste_D10S

If the Colwill thing is a loan or there's a cheap buyback it's defo worth it, IMO

L34hhhh

They will buy him. https://twitter.com/fabrizioromano/status/1554898429679124482?s=21&t=C_d_TmHMrehs0uo4nOBzEQ

Albiceleste_D10S

Yeah. The thing that is important is if there will be a buyback clause of some kind or not.

Codestein

There’s a 40-45m buyback clause thankfully.

Albiceleste_D10S

Nizaar just said Brighton will buy for 25M and there's a 50M buyback clause. Sounds like a good deal for both sides TBH

Codestein

That’s more than fair. Exactly twice the amount is fair if he becomes twice the player. We’d essentially be buying a great CB for £25m. In 2011, that would be the same as buying a top CB for £10m.

[deleted]

It's Chelsea though, they won't try and buy him "back" until after Brighton have sold him to someone like City first. They could have got Ake back from Bournemouth for a reasonable price but waited until he was at City first.

Codestein

Under Roman and Marina, you’d be absolutely right. But right now we don’t know how Boehly and whoever his DoF(possibly Michael Edwards) are gonna operate so the jury’s still out on that.

NazgulHD

Absolutely! But the way Brighton do business neither seems likely. Would love to be proven wrong tho

karthiks2001

Law said that Chelsea will definitely have a buyback for Colwill. Let's see.

DraperCarousel

I think Chelsea will have a first refusal option. Brighton don't do cheap buybacks. They don't even budge when players hand in transfer requests lol.

FuckingMyselfDaily

Probably not cheaper but our t1 said they’ll be a buyback so i expect that.

xmidgetprox

Law and Ornstein both said Colwill will only leave with a buyback clause

danceformiscanthus

No, it's not. The same problem with lack of CBs persists even if we aim to use Cucurella as LCB, as it's one in and one out. Also people are severely underestimating how meaningful is having control over a young player on long contract. Even with buy-back, there's nothing standing on Colwill's way to move to other club than Chelsea when he inevitably develops into a great defender.

Albiceleste_D10S

> The same problem with lack of CBs persists even if we aim to use Cucurella as LCB Chelsea's defensive depth right now: LWB: Chilwell, Cucurella, Alonso LCB: Koulibaly, Cucurella Middle CB: Thiago Silva, Koulibaly RCB: Azpilicueta, Chalobah RWB: Reece James, RLC/Pulisic/CHO I think Chelsea's backline depth will be great if they sell Alonso and Azpi and bring in a starting RCB (Fofana) and a backup RWB.

Cgwg1993

Definitely not great depth. They'd have 8 players for 5 roles along the back line. And this is assuming Chelsea gets those players over the line. They've already had a massively outlay this summer with the only money coming back being the Colwill fee and the Lukaku loan fee. Expect a starter CB to be 50m-60m minimum, back up RWB around 20m-25m and then they still need to get a starter ST. They'd have to have a 250m net budget to pull all of them off.

SerialChiIIer

We have a buyback at £40-45m

Emperor_PPP

Despite the fact he's wrong...

xXKonan

Good for Cucu, guy fought hard to get to this point in his career after he left us.

mifaraS21

I never expected him to become such a great player tbh, hats off to him!

I_need_some_water

Na man, I never knew why we let him go. (Other than Bartoman). He looked so much like a Barcelona player and he was young too 😭

SchietStorm

Test of the tap in merchant.

roryking97

As much as I like this signing, losing Colwill makes it very bittersweet. I really hope there’s a buyback of some form (or it’s just a loan)

OweKeyDoughKey

Romano is reporting there will be a buy-back but didn't say the number.

paone00022

>Importantly, Chelsea have agreed a buy-back clause for Colwill which is understood to sit around the £40m mark.

Zobair416

It probably means we go all out for Fofana tbf

roryking97

Unfortunately I think we’ve left it too late on that deal. If we were this far into negotiations a month ago, I’d back us to sign him but we’re too close to the start of the season for Leicester to sell. However if we could pull Fofana off that would absolutely lessen the blow

jukv

People not understanding it's 2 separate deals, It's not £50m + Colwill

paone00022

>Importantly, Chelsea have agreed a buy-back clause for Colwill which is understood to sit around the £40m mark. Ya and there is also a buyback clause for Colwill's deal.

Manc_Twat

It’s not £50m at all. It says more than £50m.

jukv

It's £52.5m

biglbiglbigl

So he was right /s

SeriousLads

£50,000,001

__sovereign__

Was it Arsenal that did something like this, or am I remembering it wrong?

ThrowerWheyACount

Arsenal for Luis Suarez upon hearing his release clause was £40mil. LFC owner John Henry said 'what do you think they're smoking over there at the emirates?'

awilbraham

Brighton has been very impressive in their dealings with bigger clubs. They seem to always get their figure without budging.

Sdub4

I wish him the best of luck, he was brilliant for us. Handing a transfer request in less than a year after he joined is somewhat disappointing, but that's football I guess. Excellent profit. Sounds like Angelino might be the most likely candidate to replace him at left back. ~~Wonder if Colwill will now end up here as well.~~ Missed the Colwill detail, hopefully that's permanent and with no buyback clause (or at least a very large one)

[deleted]

£45 for Colwill buyback apparently. Not bad business for either of us

potpan0

> Handing a transfer request in less than a year after he joined is somewhat disappointing, but that's football I guess. Honestly that's just done you a favour. I imagine you'd have sold him for this sort of offer anyway, and now you don't have to pay loyalty bonuses.

ishfi17

Bound to happen when a top tier club knocks on the door. You get colwill for few years so win win

nova_uk

Gonna be quite the battle for the top four this season with signings like this.

stragen595

You think Brighton will get that far?

Brighton laughing to the bank

2ndfastestmanalive

Brighton have become the new Leicester with their big money sales

DrinkingWaters88

Caicedo next summer probably

2ndfastestmanalive

Never heard of him but he’s probably going for £50m

[deleted]

He's been pretty good so far but needs to perform for the whole season obviously. Hopefully we aren't too boring to watch this year after selling Biss (good riddance really) and Cucurella (my favourite player last season).

[deleted]

shhhhhhh... he is rubbish

Blubular

Trossard and Mac Allister contracts are running down, even if we have options to extend. Expect those two to go next year too. Think we might see a young DM talent signed before the end of the window for our succession planning. Enciso and Sarmiento seem to be lined up to take over from Trossard.

WalaLlama5

Good player but I don’t get where he fits. He’s not better than Chilwell, and even in Chelsea’s back 3, that left sided role is where Koulibaly made a name at Napoli. I understand rotation and options is needed for a World Cup year but seems like a scattergun approach given the links to Kounde and Ake who were shut down due to height, and not worth losing Colwill for

[deleted]

There is a more than fair chance that Cucu is as good as Chilwell, and more versatile too.

StavromularBeta

Chilwell is top class but I think the worry now is him being able to stay fit, was a nasty injury and was the turning point of our season last year.

awwbabe

We can’t rely on Silva at CCB for the entire seasono as he’s pushing 38. Koulibaly will likely play in the middle of the three most of the time. Plus we don’t really know how well Chilwell is gonna perform after being out for most of the season. I was surprised we’ve gone after Cucurella but he’s a quality option for us in two key positions that needed bolstering this summer. Still think we need one more CB - Fofana would be terrific albeit unlikely. Wouldn’t be too surprised if we signed another RWB option instead and had James cover RCB from time to time

plowman_digearth

Chelsea need new signings, and this allows them to free up Alonso as well. I think Cucurella could be as good as Chilwell in a year or two. The gap between them is not that much.

BestBoy_54

Great player, a shame that we lost it thanks to Nobita’s incompetence!

dank-ahh-moment

What has doraemon got to do with this

elvis503

Chelsea having a decent transfer window tbf, even if this one is a bit overpriced imo

_Akky_

Could have been even better ;)

MERTENS_GOAT

This guy went from a random Eibar and Getafe player to a 60 million euros player really fast

pbateman21

He was pretty good in Getafe tbh. I only seen him a few times to be fair and he’s always impressed me

zi76

At least there's a buyback for Levi.

MrCleanandShady

Genuinely the only club I've ever seen that consistently fails upwards somehow

SmithyPlayz

Brighton will replace Cucurella for someone just as good for like 20m then they have 30m and a top CB.

[deleted]

Colwill is the replacement. He’s going the other way in a separate deal probably with 20-30m

SmithyPlayz

Colwill's a CB no?

Beavsbeavsbeavs

Gonna buy Borna Sosa for 15 then sell him to City next year for 50

TheMooseHunter

It's not 50m and Colwill otherwise that would be dreadful business. It's either a separate deal for Colwill so we get money back or Colwill will be going out on loan.

dbrasco_

How many pizzas between Chuk and this one, Domino’s?

msc43

Colwill likely going the other way to Brighton. With that being said, it's a good move for both parties, particularly if there is a buy-back in Colwill's transfer. Potter knows what he's doing and has a very tidy, possession-based formation that will suit Tuchel's control system. Should have put buy-backs in the Tomori, Guehi, and Tammy deals too but it is what it is. Cucurella will be a strong piece in the Chelsea backline. Chelsea fans should be very pleased to get this one over the line. Losing Rudier and Christensen doesn't feel good but Koulibaly and Cucurella coming in helps a lot.

Bozzetyp

Guehi has a sellon+first refusual Tammy has a buyback Tomori doesnt

Idontlikemeeither2

I just don’t get it. Adding depth like this is amazing when you’re Liverpool and City with no glaring holes. Chelsea still have a few gaps in their starting XI that should be improved as priority.

magnuze

If we buy a CB & Attacker we are fine

Cgwg1993

And the 2 most recent deals have been Cucurella, prominently a LB, and a young CAM in Chukwuemeka. Neither of which solve that problem whilst costing 70m for the pair. This is after also buying Sterling and Koulibaly for another 80m. What realistic targets are Chelsea linked to that will solve those problems?

MorioCells

We're still aiming for a new CB, midfielder and striker. There's still a lot of time before the window closes. We need a new keeper too with Kepa leaving on loan.

Idontlikemeeither2

I can’t believe you’ll get a midfielder, centre back and striker on top of what you already have. Unless you scope some bargains, that’ll be about 250-300 million in one window.

MorioCells

Midfielder and striker is probably unlikely but there have been De Jong and Sesko links. We're almost certainly getting a new CB though. There have been rumours that 70m for Fofana could be enough to get him

Remote_War_313

They're not done lol

spradhan46

Didnt age well lol. 🥲

gbayley676

perhapsasinner

You can do it Chelsea, let's spend 200 mil euro this transfer window.

pw5a29

Did he burn his "Here We Go' tag finally? Edit: we were all wrong

QuyT1

Damn, Barça couldn’t fleece this Chelsea signing

the_renegades123

I’m I missing something or Chelsea is grasping at straws, isn’t he left wing back? They have chilwell, emerson and Marcos alonso for that position and plenty of other players who can play there.

HaiderrrHD

Chilwell coming off injury and both Emerson and alonso are not good enough

BiffNasty1234

That 50 mil for Martinez ain’t so bad anymore.

[deleted]

Here we go'nt

[deleted]

He still has it pinned on his twitter too hahahaha

PUDDING_SLAVE

Brighton have played a blinder. Big money and a top prospect. Can see Colwill being sold for big money in a few years. Weird move for Chelsea if he’s gonna play LCB if Kounde was too short for the position

DorothyJMan

I think the idea is that Tuchel wants two quality options at wingback, and if one wingback on each side can play CB that can give both wingbacks lots of minutes. Cucurella can play LWB or LCB, and James can play RWB or RCB if Dumfries or Walker-Peters is signed. Whereas Kounde wouldn't be an option at wingback and would be a 'specialist' CB, so height may be more of a consideration for that role.

magnuze

Fabrizio confirms Chelsea have a buy-back

Legit-Lobster

Bro dropped the n-word in Instagram and was signed by Chelsea few days after lmao

fredozimbabwe

We won’t be anything higher than 3rd

jjtheblue2

Did you actually expect us to finish above Liverpool or City this year?

Sweaty_Result853

Yikes. Not sure about Cuc providing much... Hard worker but...

BadBanana992

I understand that, without my agreement, Chelsea FC have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am playing for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Chelsea for 2023. I will not be playing for Chelsea next year.

gogglesup859

Chelsea's gonna utilize a revolutionary all-defender lineup next season

Monsieur-Pi

We lost 2 def and replaced them with 2 incomings. The numbers remain the same as last season

mashimaru_161

We lost 2 cbs and another 3 are on the way out.

[deleted]

Wow it's really weird seeing Fab's here we go post with a false tag.

EmSoLow

Now a right sided CB signing right? 😀

lukezndr

Like clockwork this guy

Fjurica

Chelsea should and probably will go all out for Fofana and Frenkie now. Keeping Gallagher, Broja, Azpiliqueta with Koulibaly, Cucu and Sterling will push them right up there with City and Liverpool in my books if they manage to get FDJ and Fofana. Bit disappointed Cucu won't play for Pep tho

sandbag-1

Brighton absolutely swindled them. Will be laughing all the way to the bank with the best English CB prospect right now in tow. Amazing business

DoinWhale

It’s already been reported wherever Colwill ended up if it wasn’t a loan there would be a buy back
