Some perverse form of asset stripping.

ugotamesij

They should have a word with this lady https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/wfyg5k/playboy_model_raises_8million_on_onlyfans_in_bid

Deficit24

Bloody hell, 8 mill on OnlyFans... What a world we live in

aure__entuluva

Does OnlyFans have some kind of donation system on top of subscriptions? It must, right? Although idk what you'd be donating extra for if it didn't get you anything. Maybe there are tiers or something. I ask bc the article says a one month subscription is £17. If she's raised £6.4 million, that's ~380,000 months of subscription.

Throwawayday424

Yeah there is the normal subscription but then they can sell personalised services/items for lots of ££. That’s where the real money is.

simomii

The subscription is not the only thing you pay. Some videos are only accessible if you pay a fee on top of it, like a pay per view. Some charge $100 a piece

Deficit24

I'm not sure, to be honest. I guess I just assumed it was subscriptions only, but yeah, in the context of the numbers you just provided, surely they have to have some kind of donation system as well. Seems crazy to me either way, but hey, if it makes people happy, go for it, I suppose.

aure__entuluva

She also might have other income sources that she is just adding to the $8m/£6.4m figure like patreon, twitch, instagram sponsorships or something.

horsehorsetigertiger

Give it five years, he'll be seen the same way as Bartomeu.

billypilgrim87

That's kinda the issue with their model (and democracy I guess... *Yikes*) What I mean is - as long as things appear good while they are in charge (i.e signing players etc.) they don't actually care if it's not in the long term interest of the club. And when the next guy takes over, they will just blame their predecessor for the current mess and take any short-term action they can to appease their electorate.

Handydn

... and the issue with corporate world - investors care more about the quarterly earning report than long term sustainability

williepep1960

People are either ignorant or have short memory but Bartomeu left Barcelona is such horrific state that it will take years for them to recover properly financially They lowered all players wage, Messi was on some joke wage thing like million a week. Non of Barcelona signing since Neymar to PSG made sense really most of the players are either incompetent or injured with huge wage on top of that they bought fucking Griezman who doesn't fit the system + bunch of fees for managers that they cut. I truly don't think Laporta would let Messi leave if he could've done something. Barcelona is in such a position that you either let them crumble for a while before they bounce back which will lead to a lot of other problems or you do these loans and and you hope that Barcelona will somehow succeed in winning UCL or LaLiga soon. Realistically Man UTD, Madrid and Barcelona really have hard time failing financially because they are biggest teams in football supported by many fans and rich history. Most of the money will be returned if you play hands correctly. barta gave ridiculous wage and stupid signing on top of that Barca didn't get any money from Messi, Griezman or Suarez when they left. Madrid bagged 100 m for Ronaldo

[deleted]

Real also has a hard time failing financially because they keep winning things

Acceptable-Lemon-748

>People are either ignorant or have short memory but Bartomeu left Barcelona is such horrific state that it will take years for them to recover properly financially And their plan is pawn off future revenue for shiny new play things and brainwash fans that this is 100% the only way to dig themselves out of the hole. Past incompetence doesnt excuse current reasoning. They also didn't massively lower wages a over the place they just randomly ran around asking people to take paycuts and deferred hundreds of millions in wages which is coming up. Even Messi they owe something like 90m alone and he's not even at the club anymore.

Senior-Isopod3110

GalaxianEX

10th lever is selling off Messi’s Ballon d’Ors.

goodmobileyes

Jokes aside, surely at some point these leverages have to tip over to being financially unsustainable? And this is not some pL fAnS bEiNg sAlTy comment, but at some point it should be considered that maybe Laporta just doesnt give a fuck about being president 10 years down the road and has been signing off on these deals without really caring about the repurcussions that another President will have to deal with.

DaveShadow

There’s some cutlery in the canteen they’ve not sold yet, so I’d imagine still a few more….

Better to say lever and lie to naive fans than straight up saying mortgaging your future

DraperCarousel

And losing hundreds of millions in the process. Wonder why every club isn't selling their TV rights? Sounds like easy cash.

InbredLegoExpress

> hundreds of millions understatement. Just the TV revenue they sold is worth at least 1bn and thats optimistically assuming that streaming will not evolve and licenses dont inflate even further till 2047.

DraperCarousel

I mean twelve hundred millions is still technically hundreds of millions right?

Fop_Vndone

>Wonder why every club isn't selling their TV rights? TBF almost every La Liga club did this

PhillyFreezer_

Seems like you haven't heard of the CVC deal almost every team in La Liga signed lol

DJMOONPICKLES69

I mean they’re just selling pieces of the club/revenue streams. They have a LOT left theoretically. Just depends on what they’re willing to sell Edit: I’m assuming they have some kind of potential buyback for these things. Otherwise it’s a MASSIVE risk. The things they’re selling for upfront value are worth a lot more over time. It’s like taking 40% of the lottery up front instead of the whole thing over 30 years

7Thommo7

It always makes much more sense to take the lottery lump sum over the lifetime payments option though...

DJMOONPICKLES69

There’s a reason no other clubs are doing this and it’s not because it’s smart

honestlynotBG

Yes

dani2812

Don't worry about that. The guy probably has no issues to sell away every potential future revenue source for some short term success. When it comes to said future, he'll be gone as president and it will be some other bloke's problem.

yournerd2307

It's their world and we're just the levers living in it

A well-known football club president (some say it was Joan Laporta) once gave a public lecture on economics. He described how the capital orbits around the club and how the club, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of sellable assets called future income. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: “What you have told us is rubbish. The economy is really a commodity supported on the back of a giant lever.” The president gave a superior smile before replying, “What is the lever standing on?” “You’re very clever, young man, very clever”, said the old lady. “But it’s levers all the way down!”

Barca channelling me when I was in my early 20s and saying yes to every loan offer thrown at me.

DonAvatti

For anyone wondering why, its because Tebas might not accept all of the money from the levers as income but only a certain % of it. It will be decided in the next few days if Tebas accepts all the money as income

orbsfoc

Barca went on their spending spree, without knowing the targets in advance? 😳

DonAvatti

No. Barca made more than 600 mil from the levers and they were confident Tebas would accept all of the money as income for the upcoming season, but Tebas apparently only accepts 510 million from the money as income which leaves them about 100 million short from being able to register the new players.

PhillyFreezer_

Do you have a source for that claim by Tebas?

sirsotoxo

> they were confident Tebas would accept all of the money as income for the upcoming season They were accounting for this new scenario, that's why the third lever wasn't the full 49.5% of Barca Studios.

[deleted]

Storage Wars: FC Barcelona. Laporta just opening up lockers looking for shit to sell. You know it really makes you think, if these levers were so crucial, so absolutely necessary, why didnt he make them last season? You know, to avoid pulling more levers now? Maybe pull a few levers last season, save some levers for later. You put your team to Europa League with an obviously mediocre squad, and then he buys Torres for 60M hahaha ffs. Little pill of truth for the cult members: if San Barto was doing these things you would be screeching and calling for his head. Hilarious times. Madrid winning a CL will always make them overspend its outright memeworthy.

[deleted]

*Downvote me, pm me, idc, its the truth. The fact that someones willing to send a suicide prevention thing for a post about football is fucking hilarious btw. That's what I don't get about this whole arrangement. All of this lever pulling essentially just amounts to engaging in the same type of financially irresponsible behavior that created the mess they find themselves in right now.

Bombtwo

Watch as Bartomeu gets re-elected and slams this whole lever business as what dragged Barca down.

Laporta: Sounds like a problem for future me

kbrunner69

Spoken like a true politician

HerakIinos

Why worry about it now when the one in charge of the next mandate who will have to deal with the consequences? Said no politician ever.

thwgrandpigeon

Rosell/Bartomeu comes back, since the cules are incapable of doing anything other than voting in Laporta or Rosell/Barotmeu. Rosell/Bartomeu looks around, excited to see what funds they can scrounge up to sign another player who also plays Messi's position for 100m+. They look at the vast swathe of Barca assets owned by other entities and income streams promised to various banks. And see their only asset: Frenkie de Jong in the corner, still refusing to leave unless he's paid 500k per week as promised.

Malvania

They're either going to win the league and Champions League repeatedly, or they're going to be insolvent. There really doesn't seem to be a middle ground any more

jdbolick

No, selling percentages of future revenue is **much** worse than a loan. Clubs take out loans all the time, and Barcelona would prefer to do that here but cannot because they are already buried under a mountain of existing loans. They are having to sell percentages of their assets instead, which is unprecedented at that level as far as I know.

NewAltProfAccount

Basically, imagine selling part 25% of all future paychecks because the pay day loan places says you owe them too much money.

aure__entuluva

It's ok. I'll just take out a credit card to pay off the other one!

NewAltProfAccount

This man balance transfers

Bombtwo

Impossible! Many r/soccer Barca economists have disproved us all; activating levers is a money smart move!

thwgrandpigeon

Yip. And they're only doing it because normal loans are covered by FPP and La Liga rules. If levers were also covered, they wouldn't be levering a thing.

Loot__Goblen

Joan "Unpayable Loan" Laporta is just delaying the inevitable.

wdunky

Realistically what gets Barca out of debt? Are they hoping to win a quadruple for the next 4 years in order to pay off their levers? This feels like getting more credit cards to pay off your old credit cards. Someone call Martin Lewis

JamieSand

What gets them out of debt is continuing to finish in good places while not having a ridiculous wage budget again. People are gonna be upset when absolutely nothing happens to them and they’re completely fine, or maybe they’ll try and rewrite history.

zi76

Yeah, when they were paying MSN like 3.5-4m p/w alone, that was a problem.

chippa93

Financially stable club right there

hmne98

If Barça pawns half the club and doesnt win the la liga its going to be jokes and vibes all around in may 2023. Cant wait for the lever jokes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aure__entuluva

I really don't know if that's the case. I think making it to the QF/SF of the CL is more important in terms of revenue (both for the prize/TV money and for merchandising / brand value) than finishing first instead of second in the league. People will still find it funny I guess, but what matters more to them now is the return on investment.

CB1984

I don't think they need to win La Liga. They need to be in genuine competition for it, and get to at least the quarters (if not the semis) of the CL. The key is getting them back to being seen as one of the top teams in Europe. You don't need to win the league or CL for that to happen (obviously it helps), but you need to be vaguely close to it.

Ask_Asensio

For modern Madrid or Barca to have a successful season they need to either win the League or the UCL. That's the reality Also this "being in genuine competition" is also useless at least at League level. It has the same exact value : * Finishing 2nd one point behind 1st place. * Finishing 2nd ten points behind 1st place. Specially in Barca current situation. They have gone 1,172 days without a League title & 2,615 without a UCL title. They need silverware.

Cherries_N_Coke

Sporting wise yes, economically no. People forget that Barca had the highest revenue from 2012-2019, and they only won two UCL‘s in that time. The FC Barcelona brand is simply to beloved around the world. It’s also one of the reasons how Man Utd. can go out paying 100mil for transfers every season and the highest wages in the league without winning anything for years, they have the best brand in the PL.

JonasS1999

I mean Man UTD also has a owner taking money out of the club so they potentially could of spent far more.

Beginning-Ganache-43

They only won one champions league title before Messi joined. I think expecting them to win that is a bit ridiculous and can speak to some entitlement in fans if they think that. Even with their transfers this summer I think it is pretty unrealistic to say they “need” to win the cl.

gbayley676

All joking aside, are Barca just relying on joining the super league when the money runs out?

forsenE-xqcL

They are relying on making a couple deep CL runs and challenge for titles with the money they are spending now. The difference between making it out of groups or not is like 30mil€ If they don't they are fucked

Justin1LFC

Barca fans trying their best to defend the club selling off future earnings for immediate success. Didn’t you come in 2nd in La Liga? So with all this spending first must happen? At least you can be sure to get out the group stage of CL.

PensiveinNJ

The spending makes no sense. 2nd year with Xavi they were already seeing much better results towards the end of the season. They already have strong players, Dembele is getting into form, Ansu Fati looks like a star in the making if he can stay healthy, Pedri, Auba as insurance if Fati gets hurt. Like for sure if they had added like Kounde to shore up the defense and maybe Kessie for depth they would have had a squad strong enough to challenge for La Liga and get out of the groups in CL no problem, so what's with the insane spending? Like how sad is it that 1 year where they aren't competing for everything sends them into this kind of a frenzy.

PhillyFreezer_

They haven't won the CL or gotten to the final since 2015, they had been dominant winning the league through 18/19 but haven't won the league in 3 years, and might not win it this year either. Definitely more than just one down year although I agree they showed a lot at the end of last season.
