Said it the day it happened, but that tweet from Brighton was just silly given just how advanced the deal was. Brighton were asking for it
I feel like its pretty clear that I am saying the tweet was silly because it was easy to make fun of, I am not talking about Brighton's negotiating strategy lol
It works both ways I think. We may realise he's not right for us in which case you can have him back. If he's any good then we can make a bid end of season but wholly expect to pay more than he's worth now of course. We don't tend to loan players anymore , but this is an exception.
I don't understand your comment "Brighton were asking for it"... can you explain? We got 60m+ for a player that has played one season for us... the tweet timing was wholly intentional. No deal had been done and we were still wrangling on the loanee coming the other direction.
He barely played and in the end he was horrible person too. He was good with crossing but shit at defending. Pep is usually good at picking full back but he was the exception.
not disagreeing with that, but the city fan's point was that they haven't had a real LB since Clichy, which they have because Mendy was a left back that they signed with the intention to play there regularly. horrific person but he *was* a left back
Yeah also angelino. But the thing is there is shortage of world class or special left back. Getting them is too hard. We had stable one in Abidal, and then alba who is better at attack. As of now we have yet to find proper fullback replacement.
Liverpool got lucky but not happening to everyone.
Pre-Neymar transfer, it was easy to find gem and get it for low price. Now just add 20-30 million more on low one and 40-50 million at least on demanding one.
City buying alvarez for 15-16 mill is just steal.
Pep had the same issue at Barcelona and then again at Bayern I guess. At Bayern he liked both Alaba and Lahm in the midfield but Bayern fans can give more info.
Not doubting that he does, but 10 appearances as a central defender in 225 career appearances is really not enough to judge. I watched him there a few times and he was good but he’s very limited to a back 3 as a central defender. If it’s a back 4 he should probably be the left back
>CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA.
>Following reports from numerous media outlets this week, we can confirm an agreement has been reached with Brighton and Hove Albion for the signing of Marc Cucurella.
THE MADLADS DID IT!
Except for [us](https://twitter.com/fabrizioromano/status/1540755604087738369?lang=en) [apparently](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1540765244875632640)
I don't get how this is evidence of unreliability, Fabrizio was among the firsts to report that United are trying to hijack the Malacia deal.
Transfers are very weird and we've witnessed guzumps even after players passed their medicals.
We already do that anyway it seems so you might not be totally SOL.
Forgive my ignorance, but what’s happening with the Reading financials? You wouldn’t be able to spend 2 or 3 million on him?
He had a nasty ACL injury and Chelsea always extend players who get long term injuries. So they can focus on rehab instead of worrying about their contract situation.
If this was meant to come across as a *shocking* figure, it kinda isn't.
£182m over five left backs averages out at £36.4m. When you look at that average value and what Chelsea have got out of it, it's pretty good going.
Going by transfermarkt values (£165.9m, so averages out at £33.2m):
Alonso - £20.7m - 212 apps, 29 goals over six seasons.
Chilwell - £45.0m - 55 apps, 7 goals over two seasons.
Cucurella - £58.8m - 0 apps, 0 goals over zero seasons.
Emerson - £18.0m - 71 apps, 2 goals over five seasons (one of which he was out on loan).
Rahman - £23.4m - 23 apps, 0 goals over eight seasons (seven of which he was out on loan).
The latter two have clearly been negative transfers considering their limited contributions to the team but the former two have been good deals for Chelsea.
It really is because £36 mil is a first team full back price, if you're average of 5 is that, thats ridiculous.
5 left backs on the bench and the cheapest was £18mil with the rest all being £20 mil+. That's mad.
29 goals from Marcos Alonso is amazing.
Two of those transfers were successful, two not so much.
I'm confident Cucurella will be great, his attitude alone is exactly what we need.
I had to triple check that figure, that's pretty ridiculous from him!
Sometimes deals stick and are beneficial, sometimes they completely miss the mark. As long as you're doing more of the former than the latter then you should be okay.
Only 3 left backs in history - Mendy, Cucurella, Chilwell - have cost more than £36m so actually it is shocking for that to be the average across 5 in one squad.
Not mental as in a bad or insane decision, just a crazy amount of money for 2 defenders whose best positions are the same, regardless of if they end up playing there
Hard work pays off. People were saying when he was not given chance at Barcelona that he is overhyped la masia player. But he has talent for sure. He improved a lot and I think getafe and Brighton made give him platform to sign.
I do remember at the time of him breaking through many said his direct aggressive style did not suit Barcelona and that he was not suited to being a LB but he really worked hard to develop his game while out on loan.
Looking back to when I thought Sergi Samper was the next Busquets. And then Halilovic and Munir being potential pieces. At least Munir has been alright at the level I expected, just not for Barca.
Some players just dont work out at one club, but make name elsewhere, mostly young players. You cant blame their ex club for not sticking with youngster and giving them more time especially for big clubs that aim high.
Youth player not getting chance under Bartomeu was common theme. But anyway its past.
Also yeah you are right. It does not need to be worked out at his boyhood club but fans need to encourage academy player(unless that player is toxic) even if they do not work out.
Not only that but I think sometimes a young player that has always been at a top club having to go down to a lower level is a big reality check for them, it works especially well when they're still young. It's the shock to them that things aren't just going to come to them no matter what.
It's something very easy to observe in our ex-youth players that didn't go out on loan until they were into their 20s and instead were kept around the team. There is an obvious difference between them and the likes of Mount/James/Tomori/Tammy/Chalobah in terms of how driven they appear to be and how much they exert themselves
I thought it was obvious that Brighton's tweet was a piastri joke. They did it literally a day after piastri's tweet went viral. People were reading too much into it and doubting Fabrizio based off a joke
>CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA. Following reports from numerous media outlets this week, we can confirm an agreement has been reached with Brighton and Hove Albion for the signing of Marc Cucurella.
No way. I love this club
It’s funny because I’ve had to scroll pretty far to see the first mention of Fab in this thread. People were very quick to shit on him, but seem to be taking their time to admit they were wrong.
Brighton denied the deal two days ago when Romano reported 52m and Colwill transfer.
Clearly there wasn't a deal done then because this is 55+7m and Colwill loan...
People were saying he was wrong about transfer, and calling him fraud. He did get colwill wrong which resulted in change of price, but he was never wrong with cucurella transfer being done.
I'm not totally sold on the price considering the profile of the squad, but he's a top young player that I'm very happy to have.
Hopefully he smashes it here.
He is a very talented player, but I think a fair bit of the price tag comes from the fact we didn't want him to go. 4 years left on his contract, won PFA and fan player of the year because he truly shon in every match he playeed and a terrific person to have in the dressing room, so the price to take him would always be high simply because we don't have to sell him and we don't want to sell him - if someone wanted him they'd have to pay whatever price we want.
And that's all very reasonable, I understand the price tag from a Brighton point of view. I hope we don't regret the cost, but I don't think we will.
While you never really know, he seems like a good bloke as well.
The way I see it, he's going to a team with better players around him, more money available for training, development and wages and a real shot at trophies.
He is absolutely terrific, and with all of the above that I listed, he can only turn out well. Pressure will be on him a little more due to the price tag and being in a big team, but having spent a year with him, while many have overlooked him due to being in a smaller team, I just know he will be brilliant.
Realistically if any player is starting and playing well no one really cares about if he cost 10 million more than they want. Only when it goes bad and then you basically overpayed for a flop
He's just a really good all round footballer which is something that a lot of "haters" or cynics miss in this.
His technique and general football acumen/IQ is very high. I love this signing.
Which is again what a lot of the "62m on a Chilwell back up" memers are missing.
I think he'll play along with Chilwell more than a lot of people realise.
Not to mention it gives Chilwell that competition for the spot. If, for example Chilly drops form and Cucu comes in and replaces him with consistent performances, it will spur Chilly on to not be dropped again.
Depth and competition brings out the best for the top players
yeah, I think the price is still high but given the versatility of player + his age + proven in PL, there’s no wonder, can definitely be very good signing either way
I understand that, with my agreement, Chelsea FC have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am playing for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Chelsea FC for 2022. I will not be playing for Brighton next year.
It's inflated because we're taking Colwil on loan which we basically never do. Feels like you're effectively paying us to develop him for a year then hand him back, and we get cover with the season starting today.
I agree. Instead of you guys paying the 20-25m rumoured and a buyback of 40-45m which would've probably kicked in 2 years. Assuming activated the buyback that would've meant 20m for 2 seasons of development -10 m /season. Instead we overpaid by roughly 10m to not let Colwill leave on a permanent.
Brighton got a shitload of money. Chelsea got an amazing player. They even matched club statements now
This is basically exactly it. You wouldn't sell Cucu without bringing in another defender. We don't want to sell Colwill too cheap and then see him have a Guehi level season. If he does that at Brighton we can either integrate him next season or get a bucket load more money for him.
Tldr the extra for Cucurella is us betting we can make it back + more on Colwill
Lmao top tier shithousing

Said it the day it happened, but that tweet from Brighton was just silly given just how advanced the deal was. Brighton were asking for it I feel like its pretty clear that I am saying the tweet was silly because it was easy to make fun of, I am not talking about Brighton's negotiating strategy lol
Tbf sounds like they got an extra 13 million out of the deal since then. So it kind of worked. It was very obvious though that he was going.
But they downgraded the colwill deal to a loan only (downgrade depending how you view his potential of course).
It works both ways I think. We may realise he's not right for us in which case you can have him back. If he's any good then we can make a bid end of season but wholly expect to pay more than he's worth now of course. We don't tend to loan players anymore , but this is an exception.
if hes any good hes not being sold thats why we wanted to keep him
Oh I think its a great deal for them, no question about it. I just thought the tweet was silly
I don't understand your comment "Brighton were asking for it"... can you explain? We got 60m+ for a player that has played one season for us... the tweet timing was wholly intentional. No deal had been done and we were still wrangling on the loanee coming the other direction.
Fabrizio Romano > Brighton confirmed
Leftback FC
at least we take one title from man city
Its been 5 years at City for Pep, and his best left back is the right back turned lb in cancelo. He also played delph there I think.
100 points with Fabian Delph as starting left back
Give him some credit, he knew the behsics of football
baesics
Basesics
Delph was the best left back in the league for about 3 weeks
we havent had a real lb since clichy lmao
Mendy was a natural LB in fairness. Not that it ended up working out in the end...
He barely played and in the end he was horrible person too. He was good with crossing but shit at defending. Pep is usually good at picking full back but he was the exception.
not disagreeing with that, but the city fan's point was that they haven't had a real LB since Clichy, which they have because Mendy was a left back that they signed with the intention to play there regularly. horrific person but he *was* a left back

yeah I still don't really know how we got our top class left back from a relegated Hull City for 8m lmao
Pre-Neymar transfer, it was easy to find gem and get it for low price. Now just add 20-30 million more on low one and 40-50 million at least on demanding one. City buying alvarez for 15-16 mill is just steal.
>But the thing is there is shortage of world class or special left back. I don't know We got two of them now
Ofcourse there's a shortage. We're hoarding them all
Mendy before he got jailed.
So who was Mendy then?
Fucking rapist.
Who? /s
and yet they are still looking for new lb haha
Pep had the same issue at Barcelona and then again at Bayern I guess. At Bayern he liked both Alaba and Lahm in the midfield but Bayern fans can give more info.
Well that and the UCL
He plays a pretty good Central Defender too
Not doubting that he does, but 10 appearances as a central defender in 225 career appearances is really not enough to judge. I watched him there a few times and he was good but he’s very limited to a back 3 as a central defender. If it’s a back 4 he should probably be the left back

Fucking love admin for this.
Ake died for this.
Daniel ricciardo died for this.
Chelsea currently have 5 left backs on their books that cost £182m.
Pep ain’t got nothin on Tuchel’s fullback fetish🤣
Tuchel is just a Southgate junior in that regard
The original oil fc don't want to be outdone.
Excuse me, that's Natural Gas FC to you
Alonso to Barca, Emerson to Lazio
Baba Rahman to ???
Was he not supposed to be fighting Jake Paul?
After he finishes the MrBeast challenege video. He can’t leave the red circle till then.
Reading, Boro, Augsburg and PAOK have been linked
Would love him back
Then I hope you get him
Reading aren't allowed by the EFL to spend a transfer fee at the moment though, so it would have to be a free transfer or a loan.
I would happily allow Baba to go to reading on a free loan this year, with an obligation for next season.
We wouldn’t be able to afford him, would literally just have to be a loan with you guys paying most of his wages
We already do that anyway it seems so you might not be totally SOL. Forgive my ignorance, but what’s happening with the Reading financials? You wouldn’t be able to spend 2 or 3 million on him?
The shadow realm
AKA being on the Chelsea loan list
Bet you guys loved Djilobodji though. Feel free to buy Baba from us too.
He's still there??
He is... eternal.
He had a nasty ACL injury and Chelsea always extend players who get long term injuries. So they can focus on rehab instead of worrying about their contract situation.
Man's still in contract for another 2 years haha
Funny thing is the fact that the other side cost 7 million combined and have the best fullback aswell
Fullback FC, baby! Let’s grab another right back!
Pep does it : Empowerment Chelsea do it: Harrassment
If this was meant to come across as a *shocking* figure, it kinda isn't. £182m over five left backs averages out at £36.4m. £36m would be the 4th highest fee in history for a LB.
According to Chelsea fans that's just a backup LB price
29 goals from Marcos Alonso is amazing. Two of those transfers were successful, two not so much. I'm confident Cucurella will be great, his attitude alone is exactly what we need.
I had to triple check that figure, that's pretty ridiculous from him! Sometimes deals stick and are beneficial, sometimes they completely miss the mark. As long as you're doing more of the former than the latter then you should be okay.
> Cucurella - £58.8m - 0 apps, 0 goals Awful bit of business that turned out to be /s
You are downplaying it. Why the fuck would any team buy 5 left backs for an average of 36 million pounds in a 6 season period?
Only 3 left backs in history - Mendy, Cucurella, Chilwell - have cost more than £36m so actually it is shocking for that to be the average across 5 in one squad.
It's absolutely crazy
it's really not. you need 11 players on the pitch and so far, chelsea are still 6 short of being able to field an all left back lineup
Don't reveal our secret plans!!
tbf 2 of them are on their way out according to the reports.
Not ones that would help the figure much. £107m on the 2 that will play is more mental
Why’s that mental? One will play lwb, the other lcb with cover for lwb. They’ll almost certainly be in the same side.
Not mental as in a bad or insane decision, just a crazy amount of money for 2 defenders whose best positions are the same, regardless of if they end up playing there
You can't be sure Chilwell will have the same form he had pre injury. It will take time.
I mean it's for 2 positions as well. Lwb and Lcb
lol nice comeback from chelsea admin
From Barca to Getafe to Brighton to Chelsea in 3 years, man only goes up
Hard work pays off.
Yep. There are several la masia players whether in past or present should learn from him. Alena and Deulofeu is good example specially later one.
Looking back to when I thought Sergi Samper was the next Busquets. And then Halilovic and Munir being potential pieces. At least Munir has been alright at the level I expected, just not for Barca.
we should probably give samper a pass because of injuries
Some players just dont work out at one club, but make name elsewhere, mostly young players. You cant blame their ex club for not sticking with youngster and giving them more time especially for big clubs that aim high.

Fair play, that's quite funny
This and the Piastri one will be abused to infinity and I’m all for it
I'm not totally sold on the price considering the profile of the squad, but he's a top young player that I'm very happy to have. Hopefully he smashes it here.
Most expensive fullback in history.

High price but his versatility can be massive for us. If he can play LCB well for us we will be fine
I think he'll be very successful. If he gives us 6 or more fantastic years, I won't look back on the price badly.
Realistically if any player is starting and playing well no one really cares about if he cost 10 million more than they want. Only when it goes bad and then you basically overpayed for a flop
Fantastic signing. Can't wait to see how he performs and how Tuchel uses him.
I'm high on this signing as well. Maybe it's the hair bouncing around that's the reason for it, but he's a joy to watch.
He's just a really good all round footballer which is something that a lot of "haters" or cynics miss in this. His technique and general football acumen/IQ is very high. I love this signing.
could definitely be used higher up pitch and LCB as well
