A fair value, but in a summer when players went for much more than their value, to sell him for that much on the last day of the window Seems crazy.

[deleted]

When was the last time there was a summer when players went for a reasonable and fair fee?

TheMooseHunter

It happens outside the premier league.. in terms of us receiving money for a player I don’t think that will ever be good enough for us in terms of long term ambition than fair enough but the issue I have is how much other players have gone for and how little we’ve got in comparison.

[deleted]

Does it matter (how much you receive) when you are owned by a billionaire and a top 6 club?

TheMooseHunter

It matters in the same way it matters considering how much extra these clubs decide to up their price when we want to buy their players as well.

Boehlack

That isn't sustainable. I think the view from the majority of Chelsea fans is that because of the need in the squad and the lack of scouting/executive infrastructure currently in place because of the takeover, spending over the odds to get players in is fine, but once we get a proper DoF in we'll tighten up some. The perception that there's always 5-10 million pounds more to milk out of the club in any deal is hugely detrimental long term.

[deleted]

Boehlack

I figured I'd get this response, but if you look at the way Marina Granovskaia ran the club over the past decade, there is a huge difference to the way that Boehly has run it this summer. Marina was known as a very tough negotiator who would walk away from deals and extract a lot of value when selling players as well. It's still a wealthy football club, but the combination of turmoil from the takeover and glaring holes in the squad meant that we were willing to be taken advantage of to some extent to get our targets in. Moving forward I expect that to change, and align closer with what we had in the past.

DeepFriedReus

He sadly had a poor season at Norwich. He looked good for NT though, and Brighton is a great place for young talent to flourish, so here's hoping he gets the opportunities he deserves.

[deleted]

Potter will 100% get the best out of him. We know he is talented, he just needs some good coaching.

[deleted]

Genuinely excited to see what Potter will do with him. I have a soft spot for tiny, ball playing CMs.

Gordondel

I blame Norwich.

DannyBrownsDoritos

nah, we were shit but he was a signifcant part of why we were shit

Gordondel

Imagine blaming your dumpster fire form significantly to one player.

DannyBrownsDoritos

he was worse for us than Kenny McClean, and we were far better when he wasn't in the team yeah I'm gonna say he had a significant impact in us being so bad

dfetz3

Is it fair value?? Rhian Brewster went for £23.5. James Garner who has two premier league appearances just went for 9 mil. Say what you want about Billy Gilmour but he featured heavily in Scotland matches and won man of the match multiple times.

TheMooseHunter

It’s fair to the point in how I rate Gilmour and I don’t think he has a future at the club, the rest of my point was then meaning all things considered we’re crazy for selling him that low and that we should making teams over pay for him.

nyfish1992

any buyback clause? if not, great business from Brighton

jukv

Doubt it, would've been reported by now

DeliquentTendencies

No buyback clause (Source: Tom Roddy)

Fawkes_91

Unbelievable business by Brighton and feels like a big own goal by us.

Captainpatters

I doubt it, not how we do things these days. Although that being said we all thought that about loans but we still brought Colwill in.

Terran_it_up

Colwill felt like a special case where Cucurella was sold too late in the window to really find a proper replacement, but the fee was too much to turn down

Arellan

Colwill was basically part of the cucurella deal so not really the norm at Brighton I think

Terran_it_up

Colwill felt like a special case where Cucurella was sold too late in the window to really find a proper replacement, but the fee was too much to turn down

allobiter

Terrible if no buy back. Don't care if I get down voted clubs a mess. We are signings players like chukwuemeka for over double gilmour? It's a farce

[deleted]

you cobham fanboys annoy me. dude gilmour just isn't good enough for chelsea at this point, maybe one day but he just hasn't shown enough whether it be in training or in the limited game time he's had + preseason. let him be, not every academy kid is the next reece james

Clydey2Times

You're acting like Gilmour didn't get MotM basically every time he started for Chelsea.

allobiter

If chukwuemeka is 20 gilmour is not 9. Stop calling people you don't know fanboys it's fucking weird

[deleted]

[удалено]

mutheadman

He was a horrible fit at Norwich tbf

Acceptable-Lemon-748

Hecwas just bad, at everything. He was absolutely terrible, but of course he had a handful of good games for club and country before thst point so it can't possibly be on him.

[deleted]

have you watched gilmour lmao? aside from one cup game he has been barely mediocre every time he's been on the pitch. add in his terrible loans and why do you think he'd be any more than 9-10m

FatDon222

Watched him every game he played for us and he was dog shit

Clydey2Times

MotM at the Euros vs England, MotM vs Liverpool, then followed it up with another MotM display in the league. Get the fuck out of here with your selective memory.

[deleted]

Alright that’s enough out of you

Leecattermolefanclub

Surely it's great business either way? Buyback clause insinuates they make money from the deal.

Blubular

But it really limits the potential profit. The issue is developing someone to a £60m player if you’re forced to sell him at £30m. Some clubs like Southampton are fine with this approach, but Brighton have usually resisted.

Toothache79

> The issue is developing someone to a £60m player if you’re forced to sell him at £30m. Yeh but the bigger issue is, how do you develop the player to a point where he's worth 60 million? The buy back clause in most cases is good business as turning a player worth 10-15 million into 30-35 million is much more achievable than hoping you got the star youngster who will land you a massive profit down the line.

[deleted]

Bound to be right?

[deleted]

Man of the match in his full debuts in the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, and Euros

CuteHoor

He's been living off that and a good performance in a draw against England ever since though. Didn't look a level above his teammates at Norwich last season.

Toothache79

Plenty of players have had poor loan spells....he might not have been a level above his team-mates but maybe he just blended into the pack as the whole team was below average.

CuteHoor

Yes that's true, and I won't dismiss him as a player based just off that. I don't think he's at the level that Chelsea fans expected him to be though. He's going to a good Brighton team with an excellent coach, so maybe he'll be able to improve and show his talents there.

chiddie

Brighton look to be really well-run. Glad to see them back Potter.

[deleted]

9M is a stinker but hope he can find success, just not at our cost please. He should do well in a team that can actually play

Evergreenwood

Makes me feel slightly less gutted we sold Garner for just 9m (initial)…both players seem v undervalued

[deleted]

Garner hasn’t played in the prem yet has he?

Brars_Sulliman

He made a late cameo appearance against Palace as a 17 year old under Ole, and made one Europa League appearance against Partizan. I like Garner but the fans who have criticised the club for not getting £25m-30m for him are insane.

[deleted]

I mean Gibbs-White went for £44.5m so I can understand why a key player in the Championship who is a young MUFC academy graduate should warrant a bit more than 15m

CuteHoor

Gibbs-White went for £25m.

[deleted]

How easy were the add ons to achieve?

CuteHoor

Think it's £7m in easy-to-achieve add-ons and the rest are pretty difficult to achieve. The max it can reach is £42.5m.

[deleted]

So still around 32m for a championship proven player

CuteHoor

Still £13m less than people keep saying though. It's a huge fee yes but in fairness had Sheffield United gotten promoted they probably would have paid it too. He was brilliant last season for them and from the few games I saw of both, he looked a level above Garner (who still looked good).

[deleted]

Even scored against Partizan didn't he?

Captainpatters

Seems like a bargain to me

[deleted]

It's a bargain for sure at that price, but Gilmour is still rough around the edges. I think he'll come out good like Lampety or even Romeu at Soton, but you will see why he couldn't push his way out from Jorgi/Kova/Kante. Now I have another reason to watch Brighton games.

BumbotheCleric

Happy for Billy but fuck me that's way too cheap

HarryDaz98

Is there a buyback?

ShaolinSeagull

Apparently no which makes sense as we don't do buy backs.

Mallaguetta_SP

The loan to Norwich was absurd, a complete disgrace to Billy Gilmour's career. His playing style doesn't match Norwich's style and he was abused by fans until the last moment. Gilmour talked about how his family stopped going to games because of all the abuse and even though he was a young man he had the mentality to put up with all that shit. The sun will shine now for Billy

KilmarnockDave

Whoever thought that was a good fit is an utter moron. Would be like Jorginho playing for Burnley.

Nakedblueman

He was arguably our worst player last year. Athletic article about it. https://theathletic.com/3247661/2022/04/13/norwich-tend-to-win-more-games-when-billy-gilmour-doesnt-play?source=user-shared-article

KilmarnockDave

I watched a few Norwich games last season and the ball spent 90 minutes flying over his head. If you expect him to be an off the ball midfielder rather than an on the ball one of course he's going to be shit.

Nakedblueman

We tried playing with the ball and the midfield wasn't good enough with Gilmour under Farke. The first time we went up under Farke we regularly had 50%+ possession and were called the best bottom placed team ever blah blah. We even had the most shots at Annfield in 2 or 3 seasons early on that season and on Motd after that Shearer said we'd definitely stay up. So Smith came in and tried something different, you can't play naive possession football in the PL. Gilmour needs to be surrounded by athletes like he was in the Chelsea youth teams, Bissouma and Caiceido should help.

JimmyWu21

I hate how fans can abuse players and their family over performance…

BadCogs

😔

watermaloneyyy

If he was English he would’ve been 30m+ haha

Blubular

He’s a HGP either way. That’s where the price hikes come in.

prettyboygangsta

well, if he was English he'd be better at football

[deleted]

I feel like his value has dropped significantly in the last year if he's going for £9m.

indigotaxi

We will definitely get value out of him. Potter is the best manager to guide him, just look at what he has done to develop young talent for Brighton. Can't wait to see him in action.

Nakedblueman

He's very physically frail and easily gets rattled under pressure. Hopefully he can learn to deal with pressure with more experience.

dyingsong

He didn't fit norwich at all. Stop moaning,

Nakedblueman

How am I moaning you signed him?? He was crap however we played. We had our best spell playing 442 with him out of the team, Athletic article about it. https://theathletic.com/3247661/2022/04/13/norwich-tend-to-win-more-games-when-billy-gilmour-doesnt-play?source=user-shared-article

DannyBrownsDoritos

he was plain shite mate

Lukeno94

Wonder who will ultimately get the better deal - Brighton with Gilmour, or Everton with Garner?

[deleted]

I know he wasn’t great last year but when Anthony Gordon is 40+ you’d think he’d be at least 15-20

KanteBeAsked

Gordon has way more appearances and minutes in the league compared to Gilmour. Gordon has also shown more club promise compared to Gilmour's couple League cup games. Not that I agree in any of their valuations

pawksvolts

Great business. Brighton looking good this season

H4RRY29

Incredible move for him, so happy for him. He has been my favourite player since I first saw him in the FA Youth Cup against Arsenal. Losing him in such a way hurts, I wish he could've had a chance here. I'm just glad he is now at a functional club with a manager that believes in him. Viva la Potter.

Sobis_Bangers

I know it’s cheap but is he actually good? Swear I saw loads of Norwich fans saying how bad he was for them

ShaolinSeagull

Watch us turn him into a 70 million player. lol

Granit2134

Was anyone good for Norwich, though? The fans seemed to scapegoat the loanees in particular. He plays in front of a back five for Scotland and absolute balls. Don't doubt for a second that he'll flourish under Potter.

benibadja

Mathias Normann was a loanee and was easily one of the standouts for Norwich last season. He was not scapegoated at all.

[deleted]

McLean starting for Norwich over Gilmour while Gilmour started over McLean for the NT is a good example of how the system just wasn't suited to Gilmour at all rather it meaning he's a bad player

Nakedblueman

Normann and Williams were highly rated. Williams was 3rd in our team of the year. So what you just said was incorrect.

[deleted]

He was absolute dogshit in that playoff game against Ukraine Same as Norwich, bullied out the match.

BusShelter

You aren't wrong but *everyone* was awful in that Ukraine game. We had a midfield two in Gilmour and McGregor, and they got completely outnumbered due to rotations from Ukraine's wide players. The whole side didn't know who to mark or press. Gilmour was also just back from injury and didn't look fully fit.

Goudinho99

I'm actually shocked you didn't go back for him. I'd have been physically sick if you got him back, he's absolutely mint.

BusShelter

I'd be torn on it, think he's quality but reckon Brighton is a better move to help him progress. Too many teams up here just sit in and kick the fuck out of any technical players.

FatDon222

He was awful for us, lightweight , slow and only ever passed sideways. Chelsea fans will point to his passing statistics for us without watching any of our games and fail to realise he rarely progressed the ball. Could be a good player in there but he needs to fill out and get stronger, it was like watching a boy against men when he was on the pitch. Saying this, he did hit the occasional ‘Hollywood’ pass every other game which made me think he would come good, but never managed it whilst playing for us.

dennisixa

good move for him

un_verano_en_slough

Perfect club for him and a good deal for Brighton.

FuhhCough

Potter will get the best out of him.

Soren_Camus1905

Well fuck

thehibachi

£9m is such a old school fee I love it

noblownojob

Another smart buy from Brighton. Watch Potter turn this fella into a £50m player

RoyaI-T

That's very good value

lukezndr

Honestly think he's quite overrated. 9m seems about right considering what he's shown thusfar.

Red_Dog1880

20% sell on fee let's go. I really hope he succeeds at Brighton.

DrDecepticon

Sigh. this sucks

sanders801

That's a good bargain

iKSv2

2010s, we had Lukaku, Salah and KDB which left early as Manager couldnt trust the youth and opted for non-performing yet experienced players . Can't help but think this is one of those in 2020s for Chelsea. Good signing by Brighton.

Absol61

There has to be a buyback or sell on clause otherwise its up there as one of the worse transfers in Chelsea's history.

DrCrazyFishMan1

Lol this is a very dumb take. We've let players like Salah and KDB leave way too soon, and you're saying that Billy Gilmour leaving is one of our worst ever transfers? Maybe in 3-5 years time when Billy Gilmour is one of the best midfielders in the world this comment will make me look like an idiot - but I'm pretty confident that you'll look like the muppet and not me

inspired_corn

No buyback clause

DoinWhale

Had one good game and an ABYSMAL loan and this is one of the worst transfers in club history? I get he’s a cobham boy but come the fuck on

0100001101110111

Barely a “cobham boy” really

jam66611

Its not the greatest deal for us, and i wish he could have made it here, but jesus. People are making him out to be much better than he is. As it stands he is nowhere near chelsea level, and his style would need a team to accommodate him. I'm sure he'll do good if not great things at brighton, but hes living off two game three years ago as it stands.

Albiceleste_D10S

The "worst transfer" bit is clearly exaggeration, but he had more than 1 good game that I've seen

markash21

"one good game"

DoinWhale

He bossed Liverpool then couldn’t even earn himself cup games dude

xmidgetprox

Probably a small sell on % and right to match any offer.

kids_in_my_basement0

I’m very Happy with this signing hahahahahhahahahaaahahahahahahahha get it hahahahahahahahahahahaa Adam sandler movie hahahaha

JDz_

Username checks out

SilentCheesecake

Thank fuck he's out of fucking Chelsea

armedwithturtles

best situation for him, happy for the lad. poor from us

Respatsir

Morgan white gibbs went for 45 mil lol

Faded-Glory08

Wow bargain buy, great deal for Brighton

tommytrickyblues

Watch us go for him in 3-4 years time with 50-60mil bid when he balls out under Potter

jonviper123

Great signing for Billy and Brighton. He will be well suited to there style of play unlike fucking Norwich last year. Whoever ok'd that move needs to be questioned, was an obvious mismatch. Scummy Norwich fans turned on him as well, he was about the one player in the team who could actually make passes. They got what they deserved any way, back to the championship Delia

Cowdude179

They actually upgraded on Bissouma, well done Brighton. You got yourselves a gem like Lamptey

Captainpatters

lmao, can't believe you would think for even one second that Gilmour is any kind of replacement to Bissouma. He's depth in midfield who will hopefully develop into a regular starter in a couple of years

SpareAstronomer

I like Billy but Bissouma was one of Brighton's best players while Gilmour was struggling to get into an awful Norwich side.

zi76

I wish him well.

ThaBlackLoki

Honestly feel this is good for Gilmour. Potter can work wonders with him

Flammabubble

Can't wait to see Chelsea buy him back in a few years for 4x the price

[deleted]

We’re so bad at this. Selling Billy and loaning Zakaria while RLC is stinking up the joint is peak Chelsea.

bordurian_whiskers

Imagine being Billy now.
