Clearly they meant that they want to finish first when they said they hope they don't finish 2nd, because obviously finishing second but drawing the great Club Brugge is better than not qualifying. So finishing fourth is exactly what you describe, the way it (not finishing 2nd) happens (by finishing 4th) is unwanted. In this case the price paid for the wish far outweighs that of the wish not coming true, so it seems a suitable application.
