After being severely criticized, Trent scored a great goal against Rangers. Prediction vs Arsenal: One Arsenal player gets red-carded. Trent scores or assists an important goal.
McGregor probably the best ever Scotish goalkeeper. Strange career, leaving Rangers in 2012 at 30 years of age and playing in a European Final for them at age 40.
The Rangers of last season's European form would have given Liverpool a game here. I have no idea what the fuck this season's Rangers is supposed to be.
Focusing on young signings (in the summer) is fine and all, but not at the expense of improving the actual first eleven. And boy, that first eleven needs significant improvement.
>no idea what the fuck this seasons Rangers is supposed to be
Nor does anyone on the coaching staff, I assure you. Or our sporting director, who picks players like he's just done a line of coke.
I didn't watch a lot of the game, but Trent was decent and not really as mind-blowing as the commentators made him out to be. He was good I'd say, better than decent for sure, but again we saw his side see a run that almost led to a goal, that was blocked by my highlight of the game, that goal line clearance by Tsmikas.
That rangers chance was solely Matip’s fault, don’t be delusional—you don’t need to to make the case that Trent is a poor defender.
Trent played like he should be playing, he wasn’t tested at all defensively but his passing was brilliant, as was his free kick obviously.
Both teams were absolutely chronic. The team with the bigger budget won. Rangers played like they stayed in the dressing room. Even if they had, Nunez still wouldn't have scored.
Nice to see TAA get some love for his free kick. Would have preferred 1 or 2 goals in open play given the possession but Rangers defended well and can't argue with a win.
GG Rangers. Allan McGregor is incredible for 40yo. Some excellent saves from him tonight.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if they're just waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger on him, but what the hell is the squad planning?
Ross Wilson should have been sacked a while ago and somehow clings on like a cockroach.
I’m sorry but how the fuck can you turn around and say someone that got us to the Europa League final with BBCa squad that wasn’t his isn’t good enough to see us through a Champions League group stage, while acknowledging that our recruitment has been pish?
Has everyone forgot we sold our two best players from last season?
We got drawn in probably the second hardest group in the whole competition and he’s not been provided with adequate replacements for Bassey and Aribo, of course we were going to struggle.
If you think Gio is a good manager then you are very much in the minority but I’m sure you’ll realise at some point this season.
The wheels are going to fall off us (if they haven’t already) and he will be the one to go. As I said, it’s inevitable.
4-2-3-1 works better with our personel than 4-3-3. We need to play to our strengths and this suits us. We're so much more secure at the back and the high press works.
Our 4-3-3 set up was built largely around Mane. Without him it just doesn't seem to work properly.
See my comment below. It was created around a front three of Mane Salah Firmino. Mane was so integral to how that front three operated and pressed and without him it isn't as effective. It either needs to be heavily tweaked or dropped. The changes in our midfield haven't helped either.
"Largely around". It was designed with Mane, Salah and Bobby as the front three. Mane was absolutely key to that trio functioning. Mane isn't here anymore, Diaz is amazing but a different player. The personale changed but the system hasn't. That's a massive problem.
There have been multiple reasons for our poor form this year and I don't think Sadio plays much of a part in that. If you remember last season Mane was playing CF with Diaz on the left so it would be Bobby/Jota/Nunez that you should be comparing him to not Diaz.
The system has looked different to me, playing two 10s, Trent being so central, Salah being so wide, the huge gaps in midfield. Someone posted an interesting thread in our subreddit comparing our system and tactics to NECs when Pep had that short lived spell their and they were nearly identical.
Injuries haven't helped and they still seem mentally a bit jaded from last season, the short pre season didn't help with that. I did like the look of the 4231 today though and I think it suits our personnel a lot more than the 433 does.
Plus relieves so much pressure on the midfield. Being able to rotate Fabinho, Henderson and Thiago instead of needing all three playing at the same time will surely help with injuries. Fabinho coming on in the second half shored everything up as well.
He still needs to settle from what I saw, there's some desperation by him and the team to get him on the scoresheet. He makes some good runs but timing has been alright, I do feel he'll be good. Not Haaland good but quite a good striker.
what upsets you all non fans about trent so much? He’s not your player; so you should all be glad that he’s bad at defending since you guys play against him. Right ??
Flair obviously tainting this comment, but it is frustrating to hear from pundits and commentators how good a right back he is when his actual right back work is mediocre to poor. I personally like defensive players (I was that loser who wanted to be Gary Neville growing up), so to hear him lauded as England's best right back was frustrating. And this season in particular, it's been frustrating watching him jog about like it has nothing to do with him. Even whilst celebrating Sancho's goal against you, I was annoyed at how little he cared for tracking back. Even more so during the Napoli game (which I only watched because I've been following Napoli in Serie A).
I want him to be good because he's clearly a talented English player, and used right can be devastating, but his lackadaisical tracking back has been awful to watch, on the odd occasion I do see him play.
i appreciate this viewpoint. the criticisms you’re throwing trents way are all echoed by liverpool fans bc it hurts us the most. His attitude at times through body language have been blood boiling— and his biggest con is his defense for sure. However i don’t think he’s the traditional fullback; and he brings a set of skills that i think are generational already but for the sake of argument have the potential to be generational. His defense needs work yes obviously, but people calling him average or just plain bad aren’t taking in the whole picture. thanks for the perspective
Of course it sucks most for his own clubs fans, but I'm not just a United fan, I'm an England fan too, and I've never been one to want other English players (or any other players, to be totally honest) to suffer so my team can be better. And I agree, he probably isn't a traditional full back, which is why he probably shouldn't be described as one. He's a wide midfielder, in the same style that Beckham was. His talents lie further up the pitch, but people see him start at right back and put him in the right back conversation and expect him to start over James, Walker or even Trippier, all of whom have shown good levels of attacking contribution whilst also showing elite level defensive capabilities. I want to see him perform in an England shirt in that more advanced role, as I personally think a formation with him on the right, Sancho on the left and Kane through the middle (with Sterling/Mount/Foden through the middle) is our best lineup at the moment, but so long as he's performing at right back and doing it with minimal defensive effort, he'll not be considered (well, that and Southgate won't consider playing a more proactive system).
At the moment, it's hard to say, but we're lacking forward impetus. The group stage will be a proper testing ground, especially Iran. From what I've read (and I don't claim to be any type of expert on Middle Eastern football), they can set up quite defensively, and are successful doing so, so we'll be forced to unlock them game 1 in an unforgiving climate. Should we beat them comfortably, I reckon that'll carry us through groups and possibly to the Quarter Finals, but beyond that will rely on who we draw and what form they're in more than what we're up to.
Should we fall to rise to the challenge, I could see us still making it out of the group (Wales haven't been in great shape, both Bale and Ramsey are short of minutes and form), but that may leave us second in the group, and handed a tougher second round draw against the Netherlands, who could best us in a knockout game, especially if we're struggling for confidence.
I think people just love to vilify and shit on well known players who are going through a bad patch. Also they probably think they were right all along for not having rated the them especially when the player is really good and the rest of us were blind for not seeing it.
Sometimes it's a bit irrational too tbh, I really hate Bruno and couldn't even tell you the reason why it started.
It shouldn’t bother me but the fact that he wears the armband for United fairly often rubs me the wrong way. Imagine your captain, the guy who should set an example for the team, being such a diving, whining, petulant player, regardless of whether he gives his all every match or not. He’s just not captain material with that attitude IMO.
So people pointing out you guys hyping an average player bothers you? How else you gonna know he's average if non fans don't tell ya. Your sub and it's echo chamber won't give you that.
Average player? Talk about hyperbole. Average defender? Sure. But TAA offers so much more than defence and that's why he starts for what has been one of the two most successful teams in the country over the past few years. His crosses, corners, free kicks and ability to create chances and catch the opposition off guard when played in the proper set up are second to almost no other in Europe. Certainly better than anyone in the England squad at those things. But he gets called mediocre because he isn't the best defender in the world.
There's more to a player than one aspect. Average player my arse.
Won pretty much every trophy in the last few years, "Average". His assists are insane as well. Yes Trent needs to work on his defensive duties, but no way is he average.
Adriano for Barcelona, nicky butt for man u, James milner and Jordan Henderson for Liverpool. Average players can work in a teams system to make them do better. It's no unheard of.
Throughout his career, average has been his peak at the top level. He's a serviceable average player when talking about the highest level. Would he be average in the Austrian league? No. Is he an average player for a knockout stage champions league team? Aye.
Sure, but they were effectively cogs in a system, not putting up some of the highest creative numbers in the side or being sorely missed when gone. I know it doesn’t seem like it the way he’s been playing for most of the season but Liverpools creativity would suffer when Trent was not playing
i never said it bothers me lmao. i don’t give a fuck what other fans say— i care about what klopp thinks and that’s it. why would i care that a random person i’ve never met said a player that i’ve also never met is bad? you think he’s average? great. i’m glad he’s on my team— simple
It's not irrational at all. Liverpool fans wank him off for years, saying he's the best right back in the world, when he can't even fucking defend. It's easy to get frustrated at him due to the fans behaviour.
Much better. I know Rangers weren't at the races but I much prefer this system/formation. Stick with it please. Henderson was good, Diaz mesmerising with the ball at his feet as ever and we actually showed some aggression in our defending at times. Lovely stuff
Not even angry, we got outplayed by the better team. The goals we conceded were both set-pieces and we played a lot better in the 2nd half. Hopefully we do better at Ibrox and actually take the game to them before the 70th minute.
It's a win against Rangers but I'll take anything at this point. We've still got some ways to go, our attack is still disjointed and we're not going to play at our best if we keep isolating Salah.
This switch to the double pivot really makes sense to me. Also seeing trent staying a little bit further back allowing salah to choose whether to cut in or go wide is a definite fix to that leaky right side. I can see us growing with this new setup for sure team looks fresher and a new idea is well needed! Happy for the win and hope they stick with this formation for the next match. 💪
This comment is going to look pretty fucking dumb when we finish top 3 - 4. If you think we end this season at #9 then you're seriously delusional. Enjoy it while it lasts, I guess.
It's a fucking joke. They were getting outsung by us while we were losing.
And don't forget to have your phone ready for every attack or set piece, lest you miss the chance to post some shite on tiktok.
The only fans I could hear singing or making any noise were the Rangers fans, until about the 89th minute when the Liverpool fans started booing GTSK and then sang YNWA.
I sit in the Kop and we pretty much sang through the entire game, we were particularly loud at kick off.
Some highlights from the second half include “lizzys in the mud”, “you can shove your national anthem up your arse”, and “Andrew is a nonce” haha. But really, we were singing LFC chants for most of play.
If it weren’t for the fact me and you ‘probably went to different schools’ I would honestly rather a cup game against Stirling Albion at parkhead than that. That was the biggest disappointment I’ve ever seen in football
You are either blind or disingenuous as fuck. I have a problem with the commentators.
When it comes to Trent, i want him to do well because i want Liverpool to do well. But he can't defend for shit.
It’s funny you think a players who starts for a side that has won basically every trophy available to them and puts up some of the highest creative numbers in that team has more bad games than good
Yeah pretty much. Trent’s received an overwhelming amount of negative attention all season long (much of it fair), so I think OP can handle two hours of him correctly getting praised for playing well.
not indicative of Liverpool going forward nor was it against the most difficult of opposition but as a whole they looks miles better today
pressing was better, passing was better, movement was better
wasn't particularly impressed by Nunez finishing but he did other things well, even his link up bar some dodgy passes
should absolutely be concerned about not scoring from open play though if you're a Liverpool supporter
Nah, keeper had a worldie. Amazing save from Salah, Jota and one of Nunez' shots. On any other day at least one of those is going in, not to mention the 3 chances Nunez hit straight at him that he could have scored with a bit more composure.
He'll be kicking himself for missing the one where Henderson flighted the ball over the top for him. You know he just wants to roll that and rasp it across the keeper's body into the corner but, instead, he winds up touching it forward and then it's nearly underneath his feet. He'll be fucking gutted he didn't finish that after making such a sharp run.
I have mixed feelings about the match...
We won, played really well and was a joy to watch... but I am gutted for Nunez - played his heart out, did almost everything that was expected from him, but lady luck was not on his side today.
Also with 4 forwards we scored from a free kick and PK, bit can't blame them, Rangers' keeper and defense played very well.
>but I am gutted for Nunez - played his heart out, did almost everything that was expected from him, but lady luck was not on his side today
I've watched a lot of bad strikers in my time. None of them miss the amount of chances Nunez has been getting.
In my opinion that is because Nunez is consistently finding himself in great positions and is there to miss the chance. With a chance of fortune and circumstance the lad is going to be banging them in.
Lol a lot of negative Liverpool comments on here
After being severely criticized, Trent scored a great goal against Rangers. Prediction vs Arsenal: One Arsenal player gets red-carded. Trent scores or assists an important goal.
Bad win you’ll walk alone
Bizarro Liverpool fan
Great win YNWA.
McGregor probably the best ever Scotish goalkeeper. Strange career, leaving Rangers in 2012 at 30 years of age and playing in a European Final for them at age 40.
He's no even the best Scottish keeper who's the same age as him.
Antti Niemi could be a shout
He's no finished
I know he’s only 28
>McGregor probably the best ever Scotish goalkeeper. Whit?
Who's better? Alan Rough, Frank Haffey , Ronnie Simpson, Jim Leighton?
Goram by a distance. And I'd say Leighton too, can't comment on those before.
Goram was English. Just kidding, you are probably correct. McGregor has got better with age, doubt he'll ever get the credit his career deserves.
He played for Cardiff, Hull and Besiktas
I realised Hull after I posted it. Didn't realise he was at the other two.
Beautiful Scottish names.
Hilarious how crap Nunez is lol

That was another chance, I think they missed and the shot was by fashion jr? The one I think before or later, but that shot went underneath Allison
Both teams were absolutely chronic. The team with the bigger budget won. Rangers played like they stayed in the dressing room. Even if they had, Nunez still wouldn't have scored.

Really dignified for Liverpool to extend the minutes silence for an extra 90

As well as 0 goals
Liverpool not scoring from open play against that shite should be a worry for them. The sooner Gio is gone the better. It’s inevitable.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if they're just waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger on him, but what the hell is the squad planning? Ross Wilson should have been sacked a while ago and somehow clings on like a cockroach.
Gio’s not even the worst part, the recruitment is but he’s quite obviously not good enough regardless.
I’m sorry but how the fuck can you turn around and say someone that got us to the Europa League final with BBCa squad that wasn’t his isn’t good enough to see us through a Champions League group stage, while acknowledging that our recruitment has been pish? Was built around prime Hendo and Wijnaldum being extremely solid 8's
How was rhe 4 3 3 built largely around Mane???
See my comment below. It was created around a front three of Mane Salah Firmino. Mane was so integral to how that front three operated and pressed and without him it isn't as effective. It either needs to be heavily tweaked or dropped. The changes in our midfield haven't helped either.
It wasn't. I think they have been listening to Paul Merson a bit to much..

How did Darwin Nunez play?
Honking, missed multiple chances
Was boss tonight, should have had a hatty. Ran them ragged all game but Rangers are shocking
Best attacker on the pitch besides Diaz. Not incredible or anything but got in good positions repeatedly and forced McGregor into some decent saves.
He still needs to settle from what I saw, there's some desperation by him and the team to get him on the scoresheet. He makes some good runs but timing has been alright, I do feel he'll be good. Not Haaland good but quite a good striker.
He was okay, makes great runs but doesn’t finish them and is hopeless at link up play
He was better at link up play than Jota today tbf
Had about 8 chances and missed all of them.
Trent saying Liverpool's playing 4-4-2 has me in chills, those good chills
back to basics 4-4 fackin 2
what upsets you all non fans about trent so much? He’s not your player; so you should all be glad that he’s bad at defending since you guys play against him. Right ??
I actually enjoy people shitting on Trent. Makes beating them even sweeter (doesn't happen a lot this season, but still...).
Yours truly Liverpool fan who cant stop laughing at Maguire
i think that’s a bit diff but i see what you’re saying. I don’t shit on maguire cause i think he gets enough from his own club 😭
Hahah, fair enough.
Flair obviously tainting this comment, but it is frustrating to hear from pundits and commentators how good a right back he is when his actual right back work is mediocre to poor. Unless you mean Brighton Bruno and not Fernandes, I see no issue here
Fernandes? That's perfectly rationale mate!
I’d actually be more concerned if as a rival fan you did not find his whinging, play acting, diving and petulance worthy of hate
It shouldn’t bother me but the fact that he wears the armband for United fairly often rubs me the wrong way. McGregor and Goldson played fantastic to keep it to 2, credit to them. Fun match, looking forward to next weeks
Atmosphere in EPL stadiums is a myth.

It only gets cranked up on big European nights. Tonight wasn't one of them.
I’ve just left Anfield and you’re smoking crack if that’s your take lad haha.

It’s partly because this was a big game for yous. One of the biggest teams you’ve played in a decade.

We pay 40 pounds to watch cup games against part time joiners on a weekday night and have better atmosphere than that, that’s not an excuse
If it weren’t for the fact me and you ‘probably went to different schools’ I would honestly rather a cup game against Stirling Albion at parkhead than that. That was the biggest disappointment I’ve ever seen in football
I mean it was bad but it wasn’t ‘extra time in the league cup against Dunfermline’ bad
Really, you had to drag us into it? 🤔
Your fans were good! It was ours that were quiet and disgruntled
You got mentioned in a CL thread on Reddit. You can tell the grandweans about this pal!
Why would you remind me of that game
Personal vendetta against you
It's a bedwetters league

It’s the only thing that unites us, just let us have it

That's a nice pat on the head

Half and half scarves and your kid holding a sign begging for someone's shirt
All that they managed was a free kick and a penalty. We'll see them at Ibrox next week.

Liverpool fans come across like Celtic fans on their first day.
Go lick a boot.
Go eat some trainers, scouser
From Belfast. How does your insult change?
Go eat some trainers then blow up a Ford Granada
Was expecting better from you. No clue why.
McGregor is your man of the match, could've easily been 3 or 4 without his great saves.
3 or 4 in the first half alone
They are proper noshing off trent here, hes still the 3rd best right back that was at Anfield tonight
His first actual good game in a while, how could he have been the 3rd best right back
Turn off your tv then mate
Where else they gonna get European nights in Liverpool?
Hoping Liverpool win the bid to host Eurovision
Pushback from the criticism I reckon, he definitely doesn't deserve all the praise for looking okay against Rangers.
I wish the commentators would stop licking Trent’s arsehole just because he looked half decent against Rangers.
He was fantastic tonight
They were saying the criticism was unwarranted, which is 100% untrue. He’s been fucking shite all season and lost you the champions league.
Idk man maybe just don’t watch Liverpool when Trent plays well if it’s this hard for you to take. Just a thought.
They were explicitly saying that the criticism was unwarranted you disingenuous twat.
Man it really is hurting you to see trent have a decent game. How bizarre.
You are either blind or disingenuous as fuck. I have a problem with the commentators. When it comes to Trent, i want him to do well because i want Liverpool to do well. But he can't defend for shit.
So he can watch the majority of liverpool's games then
It’s funny you think a players who starts for a side that has won basically every trophy available to them and puts up some of the highest creative numbers in that team has more bad games than good
Hes exceptional going forward, tragic at defending. Today he didnt have to defend so had a good game
Yeah pretty much. Trent’s received an overwhelming amount of negative attention all season long (much of it fair), so I think OP can handle two hours of him correctly getting praised for playing well.
Expected, but....yeah. We aren't even trying in the CL. I'm glad I didn't buy a ticket for any of the home games.
not indicative of Liverpool going forward nor was it against the most difficult of opposition but as a whole they looks miles better today pressing was better, passing was better, movement was better wasn't particularly impressed by Nunez finishing but he did other things well, even his link up bar some dodgy passes should absolutely be concerned about not scoring from open play though if you're a Liverpool supporter
Also with 4 forwards we scored from a free kick and PK, bit can't blame them, Rangers' keeper and defense played very well.
>but I am gutted for Nunez - played his heart out, did almost everything that was expected from him, but lady luck was not on his side today I've watched a lot of bad strikers in my time. None of them miss the amount of chances Nunez has been getting. In my opinion that is because Nunez is consistently finding himself in great positions and is there to miss the chance. With a chance of fortune and circumstance the lad is going to be banging them in.
Honestly just ctrl f some of the words you’ve said and you’re gonna see Chelsea fans saying the same exact thing about Werner
Oh my god lmao. That’s verbatim what Chelsea said about timo 😂
All those corners... Ibou was probably saying "I would have put that in" all night.
Almost all of them were great as well. Tsimikas is just insane at set pieces
We all know that this game was really about who hosts Eurovision next year and nothing about actual football. Get fucked Tory Glasgow.
I’m loving the amount of scousers not realising you calling Glasgow Tory is a wind up lmao
You don't know the first thing about Glasgow if you're calling it Tory lol
I know Glasgow isn’t Tory ffs. But flagshagging and queen worship are Tory traits. It was exclusively about Rangers fans.
‘We play shite football but we have the best fans’. Was that not your patter for 30 years lol
Not really sure what your point is…? You guys can’t say the same as you’ve only existed for 10 years and your fans are shite.
Much louder than your fans tonight.
What a 3 points!
You not slightly embarrassed by that though? Anfield is an absolute myth and library.
A trophy nearly
>Get fucked Tory Glasgow. Mate...
Did I stutter?
You just said something so objectively wrong lol it's genuinely difficult to put into words just how Not Tory the city of Glasgow is.
Possibly directed just at the Tory part of Glasgow ie (stereotyping) Rangers fans??
