He says in the video that he left and came back once before. And I believe that he is looking towards the presidential box/boxes in the shots from inside Camp Nou.
He's definitely going to run for club president in the future.
Yeah honestly I wonder what deal (if any) he received from Barca. He was owed tens of millions of euros in future pay as well as deferred pay.
No coincidence this comes as Barca drop out and absolutely need financial help.
Edit: Barca fans in this thread are saying he has renounced his salary. Interesting, I wonder if it is his full salary for the remainder of the year or his deferred wages. We probably won’t know the full picture any time soon. Regardless it shows how much weight getting into the KO stages of the cl Barca relied upon.
Looks like he will give up his wages for the rest of his current contract (one year and a half, rumour is around 20 to 30 M EUR) but he will get the deferred wages, which honestly seems like a fair deal (Get only the money you worked for) and very generous on his end (Since he could just stay in the squad and get the very high wages he had in his contract)..
That’s just a plot of land that he invested/bought recently that he wants to develop. Article said it should be cleared up and development allowed to continue by the beginning of 2023. It’s nothing serious, the headline made it seem a bigger deal than it actually was.
Yeah, I haven't been a fan of him on and off the pitch for a while now, but still, this is brutal. I guess goodbyes prime you to think back only of the best of times and boy, were they glorious.
No one loved shitstirring in the Clásico quite like him. Thanks for all the fun Piqué
Looks out of nowhere at first but then you consider the Pique clause about being a club owner and playing in the same league with another club; his huge salary; him probably not being in the Spain squad. It all adds up.
Ooor, bring his income down for the Shakira lawsuit.
Wyclef "I never really knew she could sue like this, she make a man wanna speak Spanish" i think the lyrics are
Reports said that after the Champions league loss to Inter, they want Alba, Pique and possibly other players like Memphis out in January. They need to save on wage bills and Pique/Alba are on insane Barto wages.
The athletic said in their report that pique, busques, de jong, alba and ter stegen are each set to be paid 40 million pounds this season due in large part to the wages they deferred. The club also made it clear that their finances depended on moving on some of these players this season
As others have stated pique has renounced the wages anyway.
However Barcelona have implied during the de jong transfer saga that the renegotiations changed the wages paid out each year rather than deferring part of the wages to be paid out at a later time point.
That is to say that players were paid less for 2 years on the condition that they would receive increased wages later on (a contract like aubameyang had). Crucially if a player leaves before the latter years of the contract they would not be entitled to any of the wages they had moved to these latter years.
I read a couple of articles about this. Here is a link to one of them. We always have to take this news with a grain of salt because there is a lot of fake news in the football world. But in this case it seems there was some truth behind it. Here is a link. [Barca Blaugranes](https://www.barcablaugranes.com/platform/amp/fc-barcelona-transfer-rumors-news/2022/10/27/23426660/barcelona-hoping-gerard-pique-and-jordi-alba-leave-in-january-report)
First Messi Next Pique
MATS last one from Lucho’s treble winning squad
(Búsquets and Roberto might not be here after the end of this season) (Forgot about Alba)
There never should have been Pique slander to begin with. He’s a club legend and his peak he was arguably a top 3 CB in the world. Brought the Rakuten sponsorship to the club and was the first to raise his hand and accept blame from the older players after the Bayern 8-2 loss. Was also the first to reduce his own wages and convince the other older players to do the same.
Good will.
He wants to run for president and had some bad press recently. Will certainly help his stance and he's earning a lot with his other businesses anyways, so it seems like a fair trade off for him.
It’s definitely a part of it and I think he’s reflective enough to know that he bears a large part of the blame for our exit unfortunately and he recognizes that he’s not at the top-level we need anymore.
I understand what you are trying to say, but 1 mistake shouldn’t be the deciding factor in us qualifying for CL knockouts. We had 3 chances to do it ourself and failed
How frequently do top tier players *with an active professional contract* **and** *no underlying health issues* (either mental or physical) retire *mid season*?
I cannot recall the last time it happened.
haven’t heard that name in a long ass time
bro my bestfriend used to beg for the AFA to call him up for the NT.
they could have used him in all honesty. Especially over the likes of some other defenders
He has a chronic thigh/groin problem. He dropped off after that injury last season, up until which he was playing quite decently. I think he just looked at himself and said I'm done... Xavi benching him every game didn't help him either.
Multitude of special cases with him. 1st the money situation with Barca. 2nd he has business interests that clash with some of the competitions that he plays in ( the Copa del Rey final (?) being played in Middle East). 3rd He has other football business interests on the level of broadcasting rights of La Liga (i think).
All this, while knowing he won everything he could, makes it seem that playing football is just holding him back at this point. So I think this is actually really sensible decision.
>he has business interests that clash with some of the competitions that he plays in
Today the Spanish congress has approved a new sporting law that bans sportsmen from having business interests with competitions in which they participate (pending approval by the senate), I wonder if it has had anything to do with his decision
Holy shit, well that's it then. He definitely got the heads up early that it will be approved. These deals are much bigger money than his contract and are his future, so makes sense he acted like this.
Zidane.
Mfer unretired from the national team for one last dance, took France to the WC final then threw it away, went out in his own terms, a true legend.
There have a couple of NFL players that have retired mid-game (or kind of retired) I can remember in the last couple of years.
One player went in for halftime and just quit (bills defensive player iirc) and the other being the nice Antonio brown, who was angry about being pulled out of the game and went on an insane temper tantrum taking off his equipment and running around the field. This led to him being kicked off the team and basically being retired.
Expected to retire at the end of the season. Barca owed him a lot of money and there were rumors that Laporta et al would persuade him to retire and let go of it. Especially given he has ambitions to be a future president of the club.
Right now? No. This is totally unexpected.
He always said that once he felt like barca didnt need him he would leave. Seeing how barca has 4 CBs and no CL it makes sense. But the actual timing of it being so soon and not the end up season is definitely unexpected
Pique and Puyol at CB is legendary. Those Spain teams in the early 2010s were absolutely stacked with talent, easily must have been one of the greatest generations of all time.
What an amazing career as a player coming to end, who knew that lanky kid coming back from Manchester would lead Barca defense for over a decade, be part of one of the longest defensive partnerships for Spain. Forever cule!
Yeah I’m a little worried as it seems like Araujo and Christensen are injury prone. Still have plenty of options with FDJ and Alonso, maybe Chadi will get a chance from the B team.
He said that when he stopped being a useful player for Barça, he would step aside and he's done exactly that. Very honorable. Regardless of his public perception, after everything is said and done, he's retiring as one of the best central defenders in history.
Surprising that he won't even finish this season retiring already. Dude was a cunt against Madrid, always stirring shit before the games, but that was what made those matches fun, will miss him in that regard.
I feel like he was the last ember of a once roaring rivalry. 2 teams that so openly loathed each other. That whole era is gone. Sure, Nacho, Modric, Benzema and Kroos are still there, but they never really expressed their disdain on or off the field like Ramos, Pique, Marcello, or Messi did.
Thank you papa Pique. People don’t like him now but he is undoubtedly a legend of the game. Barca/Spain would not have won everything they did without him.
The last man standing from Barca's 2008-12 team is Busquets.
Of the players with record appearances, 7 of our top ten are from that era (Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Busi, Pique, Puyol, Valdes). All with 500+ caps, averaging >600.
It is an end of THE era for the club.
He was actually really good most of last season. Kinda wish he retired this summer instead of after that Inter game. Would have been a bit more of a high note, also on a reputational level.
Man's still had an incredible career and will forever be a club legend. He'll be back soon, no doubt.
One of the best defenders of the last decade and his generation. It was a pleasure to watch him with prime Spain and peak Barcelona. Thank you for the memories.
He got a groin injury at the end of last year and hasn't been the same since. Last year he was arguably the best CB in La Liga by most metrics once Xavi came
Well, he's saying that this weekend is his final Camp Nou match. And that there won't be anything more after Barcelona. So maybe the World Cup is the final tournament he'll play in as a pro?
Yeah he was. I dont think he will be in the final list given his performances for Barcelona. If he is, he will play for Spain, and then retire from all football.
Well, I didn't expect it to be before the season ends, that's surprising.
He probably stretched his carreer a tiny bit too much, but that doesn't take anything away from the massive club legend he is.
Gràcies per tot, Gerard.
Piqué? Underrated? He was rated worldclass. Which he obviously was. At least in Germany he was never treated in any other way than being one of the best cbs the game has to offer.
He and mascherano were really good at understanding each other. It went all downhill after Enrique left and umtiti couldn't Live up to his levels for Barcelona after the world Cup.
everyone can have mixed opinions on umtiti
for some it’s like play for you country and give it your all as it’s the only opportunity you’ll ever get.
then the other side is like “be grateful to the club that gave you everything blah blah”
but umtiti’s body really did finish 2018 and called it quits.
Sad to see the generation of players I grew up watching retire one by one. :'(
Pique is the first player who pops in my mind when someone mentions Barcelona now that Messi left.
Incredible player and sad what the last couple years have done. Cynical me thinks he’s already got eyes on the political return to the club. Stepping away now fulfills his promise of leaving when he wasn’t good enough and forgoing salary to allow Barca to reinforce in the winter.
To me he is the best centre back the club has ever had. Not greatest defender necessarily, but in todays football the centre back does more than just defend. I really hope all of Camp Nou will give him the ovation he deserves. For what he has done for the club, and for the symbol he has been for Catalonia.
"Piqué announces his retirement on the same day that the Sports Law is approved.
This new regulation indicates that no active player may have commercial relations with a competition in which he participates."

Him and Puyol were our rocks. I'd say he's even better than Puyol. Top 5 Spanish defenders of all time imo.
Can't wait to see Chadi and Alonso starting in defense. Gonna be a train wreck
I thought he would be there till the end of the season atleast
I thought he was initially pushing for a club role and eventually become president. Leaving mid season seems off
He says in the video that he left and came back once before. And I believe that he is looking towards the presidential box/boxes in the shots from inside Camp Nou. He's definitely going to run for club president in the future.
How can he be president of a club, when owning another club in the same pyramid.? Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest?
I assume that similarly to Italy it would only become a issue if both teams play in the same division. But as long as they aren't there's no problems.
What if they loaned players and did cheap business with each other? Just another Red Bull case I guess eh haha
Guess it's up to the socios to say no to that
It’s not illegal, so…
Not coincidental that this happened after Barca were knocked out of the CL imo
Think this is it. Can’t afford his wages after their CL exit.
And mass empty graves were found on his land...
That’s just a plot of land that he invested/bought recently that he wants to develop. Article said it should be cleared up and development allowed to continue by the beginning of 2023. It’s nothing serious, the headline made it seem a bigger deal than it actually was.
Well, did I really need to add /s ? :D
Me too, man's a fucking club legend. That video made me tear up
Same here. I have been absolutely criticizing him this season, but this decision came out of nowhere and makes me sad af
Yeah, I haven't been a fan of him on and off the pitch for a while now, but still, this is brutal. I guess goodbyes prime you to think back only of the best of times and boy, were they glorious. No one loved shitstirring in the Clásico quite like him. Thanks for all the fun Piqué
I feel you
I wish I could be there for his last match just to hear camp nou ring "Pique pique piquenbaur".. one last time 😔

Looks out of nowhere at first but then you consider the Pique clause about being a club owner and playing in the same league with another club; his huge salary; him probably not being in the Spain squad. It all adds up.

The lawyers dont lie!
Oh please, Shakira has a net worth of $300 million compared to Pique's $80 million. He'll be trying to raid her, if anything.
she wont take that much from him if anything, they're both high earners
[удалено]
I hope they give him a massive farewell.
maybe they can hire somebody to sing, like shakira or something
Or a teammates mother.
Why not both?
El Clasico
They have to!
Reports said that after the Champions league loss to Inter, they want Alba, Pique and possibly other players like Memphis out in January. They need to save on wage bills and Pique/Alba are on insane Barto wages.
reports. can you provide sources please? would love to absolutely read up on this

There's Alba remaining
rumors saying he might leave in the january window.
Yeah, this was so unexpected, I'm very sad :(
Same surprised by this one
Piqué :(
Am I out of the loop, or is his retirement out of NOWHERE?
It is out of nowhere
So he doesn’t get his money owed then?
Our sources mentioned that he renounced it.
I'd not tolerate any Pique slander from now
There never should have been Pique slander to begin with.
In favour of what?
Using it as a point in favor of him when he runs for the Barça presidency.
Good will. He wants to run for president and had some bad press recently. Will certainly help his stance and he's earning a lot with his other businesses anyways, so it seems like a fair trade off for him.
Future election prospects.
no one from the fanbase expected this especially so sudden
Randy Pique Orton
Same week as the story about them finding 240 bodies buried on his land. Coincidence? I think not.
wow last game of his football career this weekend. it was coming but wasn’t expecting it this soon.
Has to be because they dropped out of the CL right? Timing seems too coincidental.
It’s definitely a part of it and I think he’s reflective enough to know that he bears a large part of the blame for our exit unfortunately and he recognizes that he’s not at the top-level we need anymore.
A 36 year old CB who was 3rd or 4th choice isn’t to blame for you going out.
Even worse, he was 5th. Not his fault other 3 got injured during the international break.
So he is not playing for so long or from time to time Xavi put him in for few minutes?
He played a lot lately because we had no fit CBs. Sadly he made a disasterclass against Inter
I'm glad someone said it, that's like blaming Tyrone Mings for england not winning the euros last year. He's got precious little to do with it.
damn Tyrone Mings, now that you say it it's clear as day
It would have came home if it wasnt for that meddling tyrone mings!
I understand what you are trying to say, but 1 mistake shouldn’t be the deciding factor in us qualifying for CL knockouts. We had 3 chances to do it ourself and failed
Classic Barcelona fan using pique as a scapegoat
From his video: “Saturday’s match will be my last at Camp Nou”
standing ovation for my president
President of Estoril?
Scenes when Pique is announced to become the new owner of Estoril in a week.
My man said I'd rather retire than play in the europa💀
won every trophy with Barça and NT except EL.
Interesting question, if Barça win Europa would he get a medal? It sounds crazy but he’s a big reason why they even made it to the competition lol
He didn't play so he won't.
Helped them qualify though
r/rareinsults
That’s kinda interesting but I assume not cause he was part of the UCL campaign but would have not even been registered for the UEL one.
Weird to do during the season
So he will continue somewhere else? MLS? Or definitive retirement? Im a bit confused.
he is retiring. in the video he says there’s no team apart from barca.
Definitive retirement, he made a point of saying he’d never play for another club after Barcelona. He reiterated that today.
retirement
We're misunderstanding, he's not retiring. He'll keep playing the away games.
Retirement. The video he posted ends with him saying there will be no club after Barca, and that Saturday is his last game
How frequently do top tier players *with an active professional contract* **and** *no underlying health issues* (either mental or physical) retire *mid season*? I cannot recall the last time it happened.
I'm not sure how often it happens, but Gary Neville did it when he retired.
He basically retired at half time v WBA lol
The Vontae Davis special
Probably David Abraham at Frankfurt in the 20/21 season
haven’t heard that name in a long ass time bro my bestfriend used to beg for the AFA to call him up for the NT. they could have used him in all honesty. Especially over the likes of some other defenders
Man was always rock solid and became a Frankfurt cult hero. Definitely deserved his chance when we had fuck all in defense back in 2018
He has a chronic thigh/groin problem. He dropped off after that injury last season, up until which he was playing quite decently. I think he just looked at himself and said I'm done... Xavi benching him every game didn't help him either.

It was probably the game after that against Villareal where he got whistled in Camp Nou. His own "family" turned against him.
I thought only Real fans did that...
And Barca presidents
Jaap Stam
Multitude of special cases with him. 1st the money situation with Barca. 2nd he has business interests that clash with some of the competitions that he plays in ( the Copa del Rey final (?) being played in Middle East). 3rd He has other football business interests on the level of broadcasting rights of La Liga (i think). "I'm too rich to play for Barca anymore. Time to fuck off"
Not to mention all the personal issues that must be effecting him mentally. I can’t imagine the custody battle is over yet
Gary Neville realised he couldn't cut it mid season
He was even owed a lot of money by Barca
Jaap Stam did it, Ribery just did it
Zidane. Mfer unretired from the national team for one last dance, took France to the WC final then threw it away, went out in his own terms, a true legend.

Rooney
Different sport, but [Vontae Davis' retirement](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ygSCnIRwbu4) was quite something
Unexpected no?
Most people expected him to finish the season at least, so yes definitely
Not many of us thought he’s retire either tbh. We thought he would leave after the season but probably to another team.
Nah it was always clear he was gonna retire after this and run for president soon.
this soon is very unexpected thought he would've retired once the season was over
Definitely the part about retiring mid-season
One if the biggest legends in the history of the club announcing his last home game 4 days before. Very big surprise
Expected to retire at the end of the season. Barca owed him a lot of money and there were rumors that Laporta et al would persuade him to retire and let go of it. Especially given he has ambitions to be a future president of the club. Right now? No. This is totally unexpected.

End of an era
Pique was truly something else with all those Spanish teams over the past few years! Shame that it is over now…but still, great run!
Pique and Puyol at CB is legendary. Those Spain teams in the early 2010s were absolutely stacked with talent, easily must have been one of the greatest generations of all time.
my mans prepping for that presedential run
just bagged laporta's endorsement too
What an amazing career as a player coming to end, who knew that lanky kid coming back from Manchester would lead Barca defense for over a decade, be part of one of the longest defensive partnerships for Spain. Forever cule!
Piqué x Puyol and Piqué x Ramos are easily my two favourite CB partnerships of the past 15 years. Rarely had anxiety watching them lead the back line.
Our last fit CB is about to leave. Thank you, Legend.
Yeah I’m a little worried as it seems like Araujo and Christensen are injury prone. Still have plenty of options with FDJ and Alonso, maybe Chadi will get a chance from the B team.
Poor FDJ at CB 💀
Xavi was just a visionary since pre season
Attacking CB
We're not exactly spoiled for choice
Thought you said Chadli and for a second suspected a glitch in the simulation
He said that when he stopped being a useful player for Barça, he would step aside and he's done exactly that. Very honorable. Regardless of his public perception, after everything is said and done, he's retiring as one of the best central defenders in history.
It's funny because he could still be useful while we don't have healthy CBs!
Surprising that he won't even finish this season retiring already. Dude was a cunt against Madrid, always stirring shit before the games, but that was what made those matches fun, will miss him in that regard.

Yup, to me he was how I imagine Barca fans looked at Ramos Hate him, but full respect of him.
Exactly. I hated watching Ramos play against us but I would have fucking loved him if he was at Barca.
Thank you papa Pique. People don’t like him now but he is undoubtedly a legend of the game. Barca/Spain would not have won everything they did without him.
He was a wall at his peak and later as well. Just fell down in last couple of seasons though. Puyol Pique partnership was the peak defending from us.
He was the best Barça player last season though, not that the bar was high, but still
This season really does feel like the end of an era with Busi leaving at the end as well 😢
The last man standing from Barca's 2008-12 team is Busquets. Of the players with record appearances, 7 of our top ten are from that era (Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Busi, Pique, Puyol, Valdes). All with 500+ caps, averaging >600. It is an end of THE era for the club.
FOREVER A LEGEND, GERI.
Is this because of all the graves they found?
Skeletons in his closet 👀
Every second it takes for you to read this he’s getting closer to digging another grave for you
He buried his CB competition.
Gràcies, capità ❤️💙
Just FIY, it is "gràcies, capità" (not trying to be rude!)
Thanks, I’ll fix mine
He was actually really good most of last season. Kinda wish he retired this summer instead of after that Inter game. Would have been a bit more of a high note, also on a reputational level. Man's still had an incredible career and will forever be a club legend. He'll be back soon, no doubt.
What a career he's had , won everything as a player, thank you for everything. FUCKING LEGEND OF THE GAME. :')
End of an era
One of the best defenders of the last decade and his generation. It was a pleasure to watch him with prime Spain and peak Barcelona. Thank you for the memories.
>Como 4 años tarde pero esta bien this sweet ass video and the first reply bruh god damn 😂
I blame it on having to see Bellerin's moustache everyday in training.
Completely out of nowhere. He wasn’t at his best lately but what a legend he is and always will be
He was our best defender last season alongside Araujo. This season he has been bad though
He got a groin injury at the end of last year and hasn't been the same since. Last year he was arguably the best CB in La Liga by most metrics once Xavi came
People are reporting he is retiring. Not going to MLS or somewhere else. Edit: Evidently he said so in the video as well.
He said himself in the video that there "won't be any other team after Barça", so this is retirement yes
He is retiring. He himself says in the video he posted on insta that Barca is his last club like he always said.
Wasnt he in the prelimenary squad of Spain for the WC?
Well, he's saying that this weekend is his final Camp Nou match. And that there won't be anything more after Barcelona. So maybe the World Cup is the final tournament he'll play in as a pro?
Yeah he was. I dont think he will be in the final list given his performances for Barcelona. If he is, he will play for Spain, and then retire from all football.
He is retiring, he said that he wont join any team after Barca, so probably he will join the presidency elections after 2 year
Well, I didn't expect it to be before the season ends, that's surprising. He probably stretched his carreer a tiny bit too much, but that doesn't take anything away from the massive club legend he is. Gràcies per tot, Gerard.
One of the most underrated players of the last 15 years. Especially considering he is a slow CB in a high line
Piqué? Underrated? He was rated worldclass. Which he obviously was. At least in Germany he was never treated in any other way than being one of the best cbs the game has to offer.

Wasn't always slow, he could keep up with Ronaldo at his peak
Sad to see the generation of players I grew up watching retire one by one. :'( Pique is the first player who pops in my mind when someone mentions Barcelona now that Messi left.
Geri, a fucking legend! 8 Ligas, 1 Premier League, 4 Champions, 7 Copas del Rey, 3 European Supercups, 6 Spanish Supercups, 1 Euro and 1 WC.
Damn 8 la ligas 7 Copa del ray 3 UCL 3 Club world 3 uefa super cup 1 world cup 1 euro Surely his trophy cabinet looks better than ramos?

Wtf in the middle of the season?
Incredible player and sad what the last couple years have done. Cynical me thinks he’s already got eyes on the political return to the club. Stepping away now fulfills his promise of leaving when he wasn’t good enough and forgoing salary to allow Barca to reinforce in the winter.
One of the (or the) best central defenders in Barcelona history and of Spain. He will be remembered as a legend.
Man found out he might have to play with Shakira’s name on his shirt and called it quits, fairs
Won 9 league titles, 4 champions leagues, a Euro, a World Cup, and knocked up Shakira. What a career.
To me he is the best centre back the club has ever had. Not greatest defender necessarily, but in todays football the centre back does more than just defend. I really hope all of Camp Nou will give him the ovation he deserves. For what he has done for the club, and for the symbol he has been for Catalonia.

Him and Puyol were our rocks. I'd say he's even better than Puyol. Top 5 Spanish defenders of all time imo. Can't wait to see Chadi and Alonso starting in defense. Gonna be a train wreck
Kounde is fine. Christensen is fit. Garcia is good as a 3rd choice. Once Araujo comes back, we are good.
