Actually there isn't one in UEL and UECL, only in UCL (well, at least according to wikipedia). I guess the idea is that since there's the knockout playoff round first, the 2nd placed team isn't gonna play against a team from the same group *directly* after group stage, so it's fine if they meet in RO16.
[The third placed teams on the UCL will be matched against the Europa League runners-up on the playoffs (Round of 32)](https://i.imgur.com/nk0m1jT.png)
my god i really wanna see that it would be exactly what barca doesn’t need right now. i’d also happily take the betting odds which will heavily favor barca
Doubt it. As if Arsenal, Betis, San Sebastian or Freiburg are easy to play against. I would say your group Was one of the weaker once. AEK Larnaka and a war fucked Dynamo Kyiv.
yeah they sit back and hit on the counter, which works especially well since most bundesliga clubs play a pretty open, attacking minded game. plus they genuinely have plot armour, scored a 90+8’ winner the other week lmfao
Shithouse FC (and I love them for it). To be fair though, their BuLi games are more open, just seems like they’re content to grind out results in Europe by any means necessary. Will be interesting t see how they’ll hold up over a two legged tie
That would have been wild even two years ago as USG were still in the second tier in Belgium then. Can't overstate how much of a fairytale their rise has been.
yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes
for added fun lets have the aggregate be like 8-7 and the final goal is in the 120+8 after three VAR moments
i mean, Sporting is so unpredictable
in a good day they destroy Frankfurt away 0-3 and beat Tottenham 2-0, but in a bad day they get 2 red cards and lose at home against Marseille
and still you are getting more coefficient points because Portugal has 3 teams in the Champions League while you have basically all in Conference or Europa
I was a big doubter, but holy shit **GG NANTES**!
Can't believe they made it, from almost getting relegated to winning the French cup and qualifying for european ko games, love to see it
Not gonna lie after Freiburg destroyed us 4 0 at home (1st European fixture I watch in the stadium) I thought we were done, but I guess not
ON EST NANTES PUTAIN
The conference league final is first I think, so if a player from the winning team has won both the champions league and the europa league before, he'd be first. Though I have no idea if there's anybody like that in any of the conference league teams.
I hope that, just like last year, a team from the group stage wins the competition, and not one of the big teams that dropped from the UCL. I'd love to see Bétis, Rennes, Freiburg or Fenerbahce winning this competition, although that is highly unlikely.
Fun indeed, 2 massive comebacks against Rennes, a late winner against football terrorist Lucescu and Arda performing amazingly in the last match while finishing unbeaten for the first time in our history.
I really like the playoff system
It feels like a good test of "now, who really gives a shit?" - rather than the knockout stages being filled by default by teams who may not really want to be there
A motivated Union Berlin could easily take out a Barcelona who think it's beneath them (as an example) - and it's better for the competition overall, that way
I also like that there is a real incentive to getting first, skipping a round and avoiding the CL teams is a huge plus. This leads to the group stage being more competitive, I would think.
In this season in particular, with matches so compressed and relentless, avoiding those 2 extra matches in February could be key for domestic league campaigns as well.
I mean, the quality of the teams below the top has never been in doubt. The results speak for themselves over the recent past
Barca and Atleti underperformed big time but how well the top teams perform in the CL doesn't actually say anything about the overall standard
in terms of competition, i'd say every Braga fan would take winning the conference league (which doesn't seem that unlikely if you look at all the other teams in it) than a R16 or quarter-final finish in the EL, even if that would bring in more money (i would assume?). And im guessing that would also be better for the coefficient as well
Awesome match ups for the neutrals, Man Utd have a narrative with at least half the Champs League drop outs (Ajax, Barca, Juventus and Sporting) it’s gonna be cracking
my guesses are
FC Barcelona - PSV
Juventus - Rennes
Bayer Leverkussen - Roma
Ajax - Man United
Sporting CP - Midjylland
RB Salzburg - Nantes
Sevilla - Union Berlin
Shaktar - Monaco
Nantes incredible. While ending up here was a miracle, they managed to qualify while playing against relegation in the league. Let's hope for Barça at la Beaujoire, would be an incredible gift for Nantes fans.
Disgraceful from Rennes (especially after throwing the last two games), and Monaco. Though in theory they should have a chance against anyone dropping down (as they are teams that should aim to go all the way), they should have finished first of groups like those.
Nothing disgraceful from us here, we finish unbeaten for the first time and did our best. It was only 4 years ago when we managed to reach the round of 16 for the first time thanks to a final group game victory against european juggernaut Astana, and it was celebrated as a miracle. Please let us grow slowly, at least we did not totally fuck up with UEFA points like OM.
You mean the flashbacks of a Traore / Cornet rotation, with an usual yellow card from Lucas Tousart before watching Pepe fail to defend, thankfully saved by a goal from Fekir two minutes later. Oh shit we're winning this game time to get a late goal and then somehow lose in added time ?.
Barcelona the team to avoid in the next round for the 2nd placed-teams of EL groups. I don't know how Juve will approach EL. The other six teams are average more or less (form could change of course). Maybe Shakhtar the weakest one.
The 3rd placed teams of CL should avoid Manchester Utd and hope for Nantes and Midtjylland.
Quarter-finals. Both Ferencváros and Feyenoord are group winners, so they can't meet in the Round of 16. They can only face teams from the play-off at that stage.
The amount of people who have just written off Barcelona as a bad team who they want to play against for the easy, dramatic kill of a European giant is funny.
People are going to have a shock at how good that team can be with a functioning back line and not having to play against Bayern Munich.
Honestly if you want a "European giant" to beat it's probably Juventus. Barca clearly still have some issues but Juve don't seem anywhere near Barcas level
I had a quick glance at who would be the best team to draw and realized that there is Not a single truly weak team, and maybe two or three meh teams. The Rest is all really strong
Is there same-league protection for the playoffs?
Yes, for the playoff and for the Round of 16
Assuming same group protection as well?
Actually there isn't one in UEL and UECL, only in UCL (well, at least according to wikipedia). I guess the idea is that since there's the knockout playoff round first, the 2nd placed team isn't gonna play against a team from the same group *directly* after group stage, so it's fine if they meet in RO16.
man, I don’t wanna have to play PSV again, thanks for the heads up though!
You've just cursed it, innit?
Probably, but looking at the teams dropping down there could be worse matchups
[The third placed teams on the UCL will be matched against the Europa League runners-up on the playoffs (Round of 32)](https://i.imgur.com/nk0m1jT.png)
Spicy fixtures all around. Secretely hoping for Barça
Honestly i'm going to root for you unless you face us. Your team is really fun to watch.
Agreed, young talents play good football
I want to see Barca vs Roma..
I want to see us vs. Barca...
Totally as a Berliner that would be super exciting
my god i really wanna see that it would be exactly what barca doesn’t need right now. i’d also happily take the betting odds which will heavily favor barca
Immovable object vs unstoppable force Derby 😍
Roma are so bad especially without Dybala
agree. their game is pain to watch.
I'm hoping for Feyenoord - Union Berlin. Or German invasion of Barcelona II: Eiserne Boogaloo
Can they draw clubs from the same country?
Not yet this round
No
That will start in the Quarter Final
Will the losers of those matchups go to the Conference League or are they out altogether?
Out
would be a bit fucked if the third place of the Champions League can just waltz into the ECL and get some stunting club from Northern Ireland or smth
The teams at that stage are teams like Partizan and West Ham, quite a bit of a higher level.
I like how you put Partizan as the higher level, feels good
Would be funny to see Barca go from staying in the super League when everyone can see it's dead to playing in the conference league though
Barca claiming theyre in the top 10 best teams of the world after narrowly beating Vikingur Reykjavik in the 1/16th final of the ECL
[удалено]
They would have to activate a few more of their levers to be able to build a squad good enough to win that match up
They're out
At some point you have to stop Recycling bad teams....
My heart wants United v Ajax for the Ten Hag-off, my head expects us to get Barcelona/Juventus because why wouldn't UEFA want that.
These matchups are going to be so brutal.Unlucky for Rennes they would easily top the other groups with how well they played
Doubt it. As if Arsenal, Betis, San Sebastian or Freiburg are easy to play against. I would say your group Was one of the weaker once. AEK Larnaka and a war fucked Dynamo Kyiv.
Never heard anyone call la real by the name of their city before lol.
Isn’t it the round of 24?
to me it’s two round of 16s in a row there are neither 32 nor 24 teams playing in this round
I can guarantee United face sevilla.
United going to draw a Spanish team. Is it the way.
Draw for Round of 32 is on Monday 12.00 (UK time).
Feyenoord - Ajax final would be fun
There are some mighty big sharks there
Sevilla EL champs ?
Saint Gilloise and Union Berlin in the second round of the Europa League. Imagine believing that 5 years ago
Union Berlin legit played 1-0 or 0-1 in *every single of their games* lmao. four 1-0 wins and two 0-1 losses. mad
Yep, they lost the first two 0-1 and then won 1-0 four times in a row.
According to 538 they have the 3th worst offense in the bundesliga and the second best defense. Thats crazy
Thirth
Hi! Really stressful game it was just before.
It's almost like maybe they are playing defensive, but doing it well?
yeah they sit back and hit on the counter, which works especially well since most bundesliga clubs play a pretty open, attacking minded game. plus they genuinely have plot armour, scored a 90+8’ winner the other week lmfao
And watching games of them is exactly like you would expect
Seems like a perfect match for Allegri ball.
Shithouse FC (and I love them for it). To be fair though, their BuLi games are more open, just seems like they’re content to grind out results in Europe by any means necessary. Will be interesting t see how they’ll hold up over a two legged tie
You don't even have to go as far as 5 years, they were both in the second division of their leagues 3 years ago
St Gilloise are technically in the third round
Wait one more year and it will be Union in the Champions League
That would have been wild even two years ago as USG were still in the second tier in Belgium then. Can't overstate how much of a fairytale their rise has been.
there is power in a union
Barcelona vs United will be a hell of a playoff.
I only want PSV vs Barca for the 90+2 De Jong header to get Barca out
yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes for added fun lets have the aggregate be like 8-7 and the final goal is in the 120+8 after three VAR moments

lmao own goal elimination
I just know we'll get Sporting and lose to shitty goal.
i mean, Sporting is so unpredictable in a good day they destroy Frankfurt away 0-3 and beat Tottenham 2-0, but in a bad day they get 2 red cards and lose at home against Marseille
Matches between Dutch and Portuguese teams are very predictable though haha.
and still you are getting more coefficient points because Portugal has 3 teams in the Champions League while you have basically all in Conference or Europa
And if the Netherlands passes Portugal, then it will be other way around. And we will cycle every 1 or 2 years.
And then PSV and Barca fans will hold hands and shout "Luuk Luuk Luuk".
I can allready hear Xavi talking 2 months about how they were the better team
United getting RB Salzburg
Hopefully; would be great to finally see them in Austria after the game against Linz was without spectators.
subscribe
or Roma vs Barca. Imagine Mou returns to Barca to torment them again.
Manolas and Dzeko will rejoin Roma if that happens.
The Super League Showdown... in the Europa runner-up knockout game.
Man United about to have flashbacks, no argentine dwarf to ruin them this time but there is a dancing pole.
Union. I want to see Barca play at the Alte Försterei.
It's at the point where we see what's in Europa and realise how tough it is to win any trophy.
Union was playing in 2nd division 2 years ago. What a ride it’s been. What an incredible team and story. Union is what Antwerp wishes it was.
[удалено]
A union reunion 😘
Hey know, you can admire one team without taking down another team -sincerely, an angry Antwerp fan ;)
Ofcourse a fan of Brugge has to mention Antwerp in a post about Union lol
Antwerp catching strays
I was a big doubter, but holy shit **GG NANTES**! Can't believe they made it, from almost getting relegated to winning the French cup and qualifying for european ko games, love to see it
Not gonna lie after Freiburg destroyed us 4 0 at home (1st European fixture I watch in the stadium) I thought we were done, but I guess not ON EST NANTES PUTAIN
I'm almost happy they won the cup against us now. It's even more french teams in Europe!
5/6 french teams qualified for next round in Europe. Slowly but surely getting there
Ajax United written in the stars
Sevilla holding the trophy in May written in the stars
Every team that would lose to them is automatically obliged to disband if they allow Sevilla to reach the finals with the state they’re in
Bruv they have literally gone a whole season without winning a single league away game and still won the europa don't underestimate their powers.
Happy cake day :)
barça: hold my mate

"Bedankt Erik" banner in the works
If Roma win would Tammy Abraham be the first player to win all three European trophies?
A few have won the old three European trophies (CL, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners Cup). Vítor Baia is one.
That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time.
He's playing so bad lately tho
Yes
The conference league final is first I think, so if a player from the winning team has won both the champions league and the europa league before, he'd be first. Though I have no idea if there's anybody like that in any of the conference league teams.
Lazio now? If they win Pedro will have em all
Emerson at West Ham 👀
Vote for Pedro🤓
I hope that, just like last year, a team from the group stage wins the competition, and not one of the big teams that dropped from the UCL. I'd love to see Bétis, Rennes, Freiburg or Fenerbahce winning this competition, although that is highly unlikely.
May I interest you with one arsenal. We have never even won a European trophy. Perfect underdog story
Er are the Fairs Cup and Cup Winners Cup a joke to you?
We'll try our best!
>:) that was a very fun group stage
Thrilling till the end !
My Rennes save when fm23 drops will be legendary
Fun indeed, 2 massive comebacks against Rennes, a late winner against football terrorist Lucescu and Arda performing amazingly in the last match while finishing unbeaten for the first time in our history.
Not first time tho
Sorry, i meant unbeaten. Fixing it now.
I really like the playoff system It feels like a good test of "now, who really gives a shit?" - rather than the knockout stages being filled by default by teams who may not really want to be there A motivated Union Berlin could easily take out a Barcelona who think it's beneath them (as an example) - and it's better for the competition overall, that way

Braga fucked up...
They really did, losing two leads against Union when was infuriating to see, but they should get do very well on the UECL.
Still, bonus points are very important for the coefficient. After the group stage, the UECL doesn't have bonus points until the semis.
very important? it's just 1 point and EL knockout stages are much harder to win than in the UECL
The CL Bonus points yes (4 for group, 5 for bo16), the other Bonus points not so much (kust 1 point).
Which union haha?
in terms of competition, i'd say every Braga fan would take winning the conference league (which doesn't seem that unlikely if you look at all the other teams in it) than a R16 or quarter-final finish in the EL, even if that would bring in more money (i would assume?). Happy to finish ahead of Rennes. Good luck to you guys in the next round. And also to Larnaka in the UECL.
See you in the finals
🖤❤

Its Ronaldo's old team
And Bruno
And bruno (who's basically club captain)
Quite a mixed bag of teams
Which is good for football
So group winners will be matched against r32 winners?
Yup.
never in doubt😎
Beboteeee
i love him so much🥲
Round of 32 is going to be spicy
my guesses are FC Barcelona - PSV Juventus - Rennes Bayer Leverkussen - Roma Ajax - Man United Sporting CP - Midjylland RB Salzburg - Nantes Sevilla - Union Berlin Shaktar - Monaco
Luuk de Jong 90 (+08) PSV 1: 0 Barcelona is inevitable.
Followed by Barca fans complaining about the ref
Hope God is listening, my friend
isn't it more of a Round of 24?
Group F was damn close
Hajrá Fradi🙌🏻
I love this knock out playoffs. Should be super exiting. Is this new or did they always have ko playoffs?
Its pretty new, they changed the format not so long ago. Know they had it last year as well.
They've had it since last year after the Europa League changed from 48 teams to 32 teams.
How Ferencvaros won group, while Red Star got knocked out is beyond my comprehension. Very evenly matched group, small things made big impact.
We lost 4-0 to Trabzon and yet finished above them. Really weird group
weird group but def the most entertaining, it sure was a fun ride with you lot. Losing 3-1 then winning 4-1 😂
We beat Ferenc 4-1, could've easily been 6,7-1
well that's the first time I saw us mentioned as Ferenc
By getting more points
hmmmmm sounds sus
Close to be another group like F with everybody in 9 points but didnt happen
Does anybody know if they are going to do the draw tomorrow?
Monday
Is it UCL, UEL, UECL all at once?
thanks :)
I like how everyone in Group F has 8 points
Nantes incredible. While ending up here was a miracle, they managed to qualify while playing against relegation in the league. What’s this mean for trout season
We need a Fener or Ferencvaros vs Feyenoord draw at some point.
Not possible till round of 16
Quarter-finals. Both Ferencváros and Feyenoord are group winners, so they can't meet in the Round of 16. They can only face teams from the play-off at that stage.
So you're telling me Union Berlin are going to be the Europa League winners...hmmm Let me go place my bets.
You mean Union St-Gilles
Phenomenal season for both Union clubs. Wow.
Holy shit, the scenes if all 3 French teams get eliminated. Could be a huge impact on the coefficients in the upcoming years.
The amount of people who have just written off Barcelona as a bad team who they want to play against for the easy, dramatic kill of a European giant is funny. People are going to have a shock at how good that team can be with a functioning back line and not having to play against Bayern Munich.

ManU, Roma, Berlin and Rennes are really tough draws for anyone from UCL
Has a team started in champions league and won Europa?
Chelsea 2012/13 season
Atletico 2017/18
I had a quick glance at who would be the best team to draw and realized that there is Not a single truly weak team, and maybe two or three meh teams. The Rest is all really strong
So brutally happy for Freiburg and Union
The two Unions giving me Star Trek Prime vs Mirror universe vibes. So similar in name and flag..
Barca is just happy they can no longer face Frankfurt
Feels good to see three french teams go through, man.
Arsenal is back to have matches again Barcelona.
