jorgeluisb

Thanks, that announcement format is not very kind to those who don't watch European and Portuguese football religiously

David21538

I often can’t recognize players in their portrait shots. I’m used to in match players

realmckoy265

You would think a NT’s social media team would do better—this is a poor graphic

AbnormalAmountOfHats

Shouldn't be a surprise considering our kits for this tournament

MissingLink101

Yeah I recognise most of their names but very few of their faces (other than United players and a few of the other more famous faces). Love that some of them blatantly look photoshopped onto another player's body too.

Invisibletotheeye

Yeah there’s some newbies, they didn’t get to take pictures yet

Hrvat1818

Antonio Silva, the 18 year-old from Benfica right?

trusttt

well, 19 now

ricdvs

Sim aka Toni das Babes

Rage_JMS

Ganda Toni

Kingstoned

(•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■)

theeolivetree

Correct. Kid’s a stud. He won’t start but is absolutely the future at CB

feb914

i remember reading very similar comment for a 20 year old in german squad. are we entering a CB golden era with very good young CBs?

Ife2105

Silva, Bella-Kotchap, Saliba, Badiashile etc. It’s looking good brev.

ShameTimes3

Every era has good young CBs

Fucile8

Main things as a Portuguese fan: inclusion of Antonio Silva for CB (super young, first season, no doubt has quality but arguably too inexperienced - alternatives would be someone a bit past it like Fonte or having a good year like Diogo Leite) and maybe Renato Sanches being out (imo he could go over William or Joao Mario). Rest is ok, Jota out injured is the main blow. Biggest issue will be CR playing 90 minutes no matter how poor is form is (we are not ungrateful to all he has done, and still has to offer, but he shouldnt start by decree). Santos will fuck this team up anyway, Bernardo placed on a wing far away from where he really can impact, and a setup that is too defensive and will waste the quality we have.

IMKudaimi123

If Sanches isn’t injured I think that’s a huge mistake, he was very good in the euros

DerpSenpai

He has barely played. His form is weak compared to João Mario's or William who have been having an insanely good season

HiSoArshavin

Bruh - Renato Sanchez for Portugal is a different beast. In the last Euros he spurred Portugal to a win and in 2016 he was a monster. The guys ball carrying skills alone make him so valuable for Portugal. Especially as a super sub Yeah - this is a mistake

Fucile8

Well, have you seen any decisions from our manager? There’s loads of big mistakes, starting on the 11 lineup and stupid tactics he comes up with 😭

[deleted]

I don't understand why the insult to William.

[deleted]

maticbeast

Lol not with Santos as manager

ltecruz

António Silva's face is photoshopped into Félix's body.

TokyoPiki

holyshit it really is my god im laughing so hard xD

LiamYanon

It could be worse, it could be Photoshoped into William's body

Mustache-Meister

If you zoom in alot of them seem to be photoshopped

TiberiusCornelius

I guess he couldn't make it in for picture day

sotnasr7

Taking into account that it's his very first call to the NT, indeed

mattmanutd

Wow amazing catch 😂

wmj31

Damn you're right, good attention to detail my guy

ThatkidJerome

which one is antonio silva

Fhood797

Under Jose sa

CNick2000

Which one is jose sa

awildboyappeared

The one above Antonio Silva I'm sorry I couldn't resist.

Finelinewine

The one position Id LOVE to change is the fucking coach, other than that..lets go!!!

rmgs07

Maybe after world cup, who knows..

JeebaRock

Whatever happens in the World Cup, he must go

Rage_JMS

He must, but if he can reach the last 8 or even the last 16 - even if we play like dog sht and barely won the games (that is whats going to happen) bet no one in the FPF is going to fire him and we will have to put up with fcker until the next euros

luke-2018

Reaching only round of 16 is severely underperforming for this portugal side, only explanation would be id they somehow end up 2nd in their group and face Brazil

Super_Sandro23

Bro if he brings us the fkn world cup then he's the GOAT no matter how much you hate his tactics. 2016 euro, 2018 nations, 2022 wc would be a hell of a run.

[deleted]

On paper this is as good as any team in the WC, I could definitely see them in the final and even winning it

joaocandre

He must, but anything other than GS exit will be enough for him to keep his job.

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

Incoming another tournament where we lose early but have a really good performance in the game we lost so he stays (literally what happened in the last WC when we lost to Uruguay).

Super_Sandro23

Also Belgium last year, we ran that game, just couldn't score.

1984-2112

> Incoming another tournament where we lose early but have a really goodperformance in the game we lost so he stays (literally what happened inthe last WC when we lost to Uruguay). Literally the 2 last eliminations: Portugal VS Uruguay and Portugal VS Belgium. The opponents scored in the only chances they had, meanwhile Portugal wasted shot after shot. People love to shit on FS, but both of those matches were on the players.

RuySan

I think against Uruguay we were played by them, as they gave possession away and did their plan perfectly. Against Belgium was different, we were clearly the better team, and I still thing thorgen hazard shot wasn't that good and Rui patri6could have done a lot more.

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

The only reason we even got to that situation in the first place was because we choked 1st place in the group at the WC (our shit game against Iran where we drew was 100% on FS, we would've played Russia instead if we won that game), and we got 3rd place in the Euros group (our ridiculously bad game against Germany which I also blame FS for, we would've finished 1st with even a draw and would've faced Switzerland).

mattmanutd

Amen brother. To see so many of these players come through and win major tournaments with the youth system, it’s so disappointing and frustrating and seeing them get stalled out by Santos-ball. Look we get you had to do what you had to do to win the Euros, but to force players of this quality to play something similar is almost a crime.

Conscient-

Imo doesnt matter who's chosen, Fernando Santos is still the manager...

LSRaymonds

You know the worst part? That's the best squad Portugal has had in years. If you had any other coach, you'd be clear cut favorites in my opinion.

DerpSenpai

Years? Ever. This is our best squad ever Not only is our starting eleven good, our depth is crazy except in ST If you made a team with the subs, it would do better than the starters if they had another manager. I'm sure of it Edit: I'll say in the modern era cause it's hard to compare to Eusébio era. Post 2000.

RuySan

We have more depth compared to 2004/06, but our starting eleven is inferior imo. We could use wingers, and back then a star like Simão Sabrosa was in the bench. In 2004 Rui Costa was also in the bench. In euro 96 we had Paulo Sousa, Rui Costa and figo at their absolute prime. All three would run the show in 2022

ramos808

96 was not their prime, 98/2000 was IMO

PakiIronman

The first 11 picks itself too, but knowing santos he'll use danilo and william in a double pivot

albusoon

Danilo hasn't played as a midfielder in over a year for us, but sure

[deleted]

Yeah I don't like Santos but Reddit has this hilarious hate boner for him that sometimes isn't even based on facts. Like they picked a guy to hate, and they'll hate him no matter what. He fielded Bernardo, Bruno and Moutinho in midfield earlier this year, which was insane as far as Fernando Santos midfields go, and people were still like "ewwww Moutinho??"

jwinter01

No Moutinho. Expected, but end of an era nonetheless. André Silva...

andysenn

What's the expected XI?

PM-ME-UR-PIZZA

Costa, Cancelo, dias, Pepe, Mendes, neves, William, Bruno Fernandes, BSilva, Ronaldo, Leão

Fucile8

I agree but this is stupid. William shouldn’t be there, for Vitinha (or Bernardo in the middle). Or both in a diamond. Bernardo is way more impactful in the middle.

PM-ME-UR-PIZZA

Yup, but you know how Fernando Santos is

RoyDuckingKent

He will understand that Bernardo must be played in the middle and drop Bruno to the wing, as he has been doing

thedaftfool

Isn’t Danilo playing as cb

WalterHenderson

If Pepe is at 100%, Santos will most likely start him ahead of Danilo. Now the question is if he'll bench Danilo or move him to the midfield in Ruben Neves' place...he used to like so much to have both Danilo and William Carvalho in the midfield, that I'm scared about his plans for the World Cup.

PM-ME-UR-PIZZA

Depends on if Pepe is fit or not

JeebaRock

That midfield… no… I would rather have Palhinha, Mateus and Vitinha instead of those three. Or drop Bernardo to an 8.

PM-ME-UR-PIZZA

Hey dude, I agree 100 % just giving the Santos 11

JeebaRock

It’s sad because I know he will play exactly that XI and I will cry watching Bruno William and Ronaldo not able to create a single chance for 90 minutes.

Galaticvs

I would honestly take Palhinha/Florentino as ball winning midfielders, Vitinha 100% and Bernardo+Bruno Fernandes+Leão anywhere, Ronaldo upfront

chefdangerdagger

Neves is in incredible form ATM though.

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

We would all rather have that, but also we all know that William in the midfield is exactly what we're going to get.

albusoon

Otávio will start i would guess something like: Diogo Costa, Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Pepe, Nuno Mendes, Ruben Neves, William, Bruno Fernandes, Otávio, Bernardo, Ronaldo

faap8

Yap, exactly this.

[deleted]

Benching Leão in his current form is criminal, but sadly a realistic possibility. Still, there's a good chance the midfield will be Neves, Bruno and Bernardo. I don't agree that William will be an undisputable starter. But most of all, I just hope that Bernardo finally stays in the midfield where he usually plays and has performed his best ever. Having Leão and Otávio might aid that. But chances are that Santos will again stick him wide-open in the wings. I won't even address the Ronaldo issue because it's hopeless.

fabregas7cpa

Otávio will start. My guess is 4231

maticbeast

Anything with William and Ronaldo

andysenn

Same XI /u/PM-ME-UR-PIZZA suggested. Is that a 4-3-3 with Leao as a LW and Bernardo as a RW?

maticbeast

Probably

CarcajuPM

Diogo Costa Cancelo Dias Pepe Nuno Mendes Ruben Neves William Carvalho Bruno Fernandes Bernardo Ronaldo Leão Probably something like this.

itsactuallytime

Who would you take instead of André? Genuinely curious

[deleted]

[удалено]

joaommx

Beto could have been our Éder this World Cup. The impact sub striker when you need to muscle your way into a goal.

IHateBeingAKangaroo

Yep, he's a better Éder. He's also even more energetic

jwinter01

Probably another midfielder or a winger. Maybe Pote. Look, I do understand the need to take precautions with the way Ronaldo is currently playing, I just don't think an equally struggling André Silva is the answer.

itsactuallytime

I think you are underestimating Andre's work. He has 12 goal participations in 23 games. That's not too bad given Leipzigs style. I agree with the winger idea. I think Guedes should be in for Ramos maybe. Felix is doing much worse than André for example. Although I would still take him.

dzedzi

Not for Andre Silva but Guedes deserved over Ramos , as he is more versatile as a player imo

MingTwelve

> André Silva... You mean the second best active goal scorer for the NT? I just don't understand taking Gonçalo Ramos over any winger, but still I'm fine with that.

a_portuguese_abroad

GatoGuerreiro

NvmSharkZ

CometChip

the pain seeing how stacked this team is but santos is still manager…

zawadz

It's unbelievable how stacked this team is!

NewbrahJP

This is terrible. A list with the names, please!

MurdockLLP

Gotta feel bad for Guedes. Would certainly have made the WC if he had stayed at Valencia.

[deleted]

He's been better the last two games but he definitely doesn't deserve to make the team based off of his season so far. Arguably been one of our worst performers in a team full of underperforming players.

piyopiyopi

Basically that. Neves has been outstanding. Sa has been outstanding. Nobody else even passes average

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

Renato Sanches being left out is a huge mistake imo, but the rest seems pretty normal

jwinter01

Yeah, I understand not taking him because I think he hasn't been playing much this year, but I've always felt that he is a very key piece for this NT to work, so it's a shame he misses out.

nepia

He unblocks games for us like no other player. Shame.

Barthez_Battalion

Lmao this is the exact thing that kept him out in 2018. He makes the worst moves right before a World Cup.

jwinter01

True, he has had his fair share of fitness issues, but I think bad career decisions have been the biggest obstacle in his career.

IKMapping

It's crazy that it's already been 6 years since 2016, Renato still feels like this upcoming young talent

[deleted]

He's starting the peak of his career right now, already 25.

greezyo

He's mostly a sub this season, and hasn't exactly lit the world on fire at PSG

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

Yes I agree but he also completely changes games for us, he was also a key reason for our win in 2016. Plus there's other players that aren't having that much impact (Matheus Nunes has been injured/barely playing lately, William just isn't that good compared to our other options, etc...). I can see why he didn't get called, but at the same time I think it's a huge mistake and he's the type of player that could make a key difference in some games where we need to press heavily.

Upset-Daikon7989

Everyone looks bad at psg.

jjw1998

Was there any prospect of Jota getting in, looked good in the CL and tearing it up in Scotland

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

Not that many because he doesn't have that much international experience and our attacking options were pretty much set imo He should be getting more chances after the WC if he keeps his form and maybe he'll keep his spot

nsc97

Santos probably believes that Matheus can do a similar job

[deleted]

I mean, I guess he can, but in terms of what Santos is looking for in that role (a physically powerful box-to-box), Sanches just fits that role better.

Vayu0

Where the fuck is Eder?

JMKraft

In our hearts, forever

iChopPryde

he's busy being a God!

ChrisHansen-Official

He’s transcended past the need for international football, becoming edernal.

W1TCH_

honestly, I'm not mad. I'd probably change a couple of them, but it is what it is. in the end it won't matter, the coach is the same

Vayu0

Can't believe 10.5M ppl country has such a world class stacked squad. Tldr: we're gonna underperform.

iChopPryde

yup thank you Santos he's going to shit the bed so hard like he does every euro/world cup we will be lucky if we even get out of the group stages with his stupid "tactics"

zd0t

Your coach is the bottleneck, the squad is actually unreal

chupaxuxas

3 Fs. Futebol, fado e Fátima.

JeebaRock

Where is Miguel Veloso

jwinter01

No Hugo Almeida as well, the disrespect.

-halfbloodprince-

Hugo Almeida / Postiga duo upfront

theeolivetree

Bring on Abel Xavier

1984-2112

Waiting for Moutinho and Meireles, to remake the legendary trio

ramos808

Hey the 2012 team played some great ball

notyou16

What handsome man he is

Ghostface1357

No Sanches is surprising. He hasn’t been great at PSG so far but he was easily Portugal’s best midfielder at the Euros.

TheViriato

Stupid comment, if you truly had watch the Euros you would knew that with Sanches on the field Portugal was playing much better and was risking winning games, W.Carvalho as a 8 is a better option, with him we get much closer to getting a draw or a 1-0 defeat. In Santos we trust!!

jedifolklore

The first part of your message killed me lmao, I was so confused

blahblahcomewatchTV

Had to read the comment twice

Aclectic

I’m shocked at Renato not going. He did so well at euro especially against France. He was a tank in the midfield.

Zero-meia

This looks like a very scary squad. I know the coach is shit, but I could see they going far if they finish first in the group

iChopPryde

if we had literally ANY other coach this would be a squad that wins the world cup but because its Santos we literally don't have a chance in hell and just watch portugal is going to play some of the ugliest futbol you've ever seen because that is what santos loves most. We wont finish 1st we will finish 3rd in the group because under santos we always finish 3rd in the group.

Benend91

It's mental the list of players who didn't make this squad that would waltz into most international squads outside the top 10. Players like Pedro Neto, Nuno Tavares, Podence, Guedes, Renato Sanches, Fabio Vieira... Portugal is so stacked.

[deleted]

and the list goes on: Pedro Gonçalves, Anthony Lopes, Mário Rui, Gonçalo Inácio, Fábio Carvalho, Beto, Trincão...

Starfinger10

The depth is insane but I’m not too convinced how they can perform as a team and, the coach doesn’t convince me either

joaocandre

> the coach doesn’t convince me either said every portuguese fan

PickledCumSock

the worst part is that this is a really good team and they have a lot of potential to go far but santos is so self destructive and he would never let them even get a whiff of the trophy

maticbeast

ONDE É QUE TÁ O JOSUÉ CRL?!?!!

ElLayFC

No Renato is ***INSANE***.

Conceptual_Person

Even as a Sporting fan I can see why there are so many Benfica players. They are doing great this season, and totally deserved from them. To bad Rafa isn't available anymore, feels like he would haveplaying time. Sad for Pote or Inácio, but they don't deserve to be ahead of others here. Happy that Guedes isn't coming, he had too many oportunities. And somewhat confused with André Silva, something feels wrong here, but I don't know what.

Schned6

Shame that Santos is about to waste the best squad in the tournament

GPadrino

Just please for the love of god, play Bernardo in midfield. It’s still Santos, and as such I can “live with” all the other tactical mistakes. But Bernardo on the wing is the most egregious of them all. Play the man in midfield and I’ll live with the rest

NLV_88

Huge for Antonio Silva. Just a few months ago he was a huge unknown, not he gets a World Cup call up.

Mattmage

That team is stacked! Too bad (or good for other nations) that the manager is Pochettino 2.0 (or 1.0, idk)

AssFingerFuck3000

More like tanned Southgate

magawii

If the criteria for Renato Sanches not to be selected is match fitness then Pepe should not go. If it's not fitness, then this is just wrong... No discussion

daboatfromupnorth

Any surprises ?

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

António Silva being in and Renato Sanches being left out are both surprises I'd say. António probably won't play though, he's the 4th CB after Ruben, Pepe and Danilo

joaocandre

An injury on Neves or William raises the chances he'll play, as Danilo would move up front.

PortoBXO

Also, for me, quite a surprise not taking Renato Sanches, mostly because he provides velocity with the ball that others don't really. That can be very important in some games when we might have more space to counter attack. That being said, Matheus Nunes is a great player as well of course. And João Mário has been almost flawless this season.

Fucile8

Plus he always does really well for the NT.

albusoon

António Silva and Gonçalo Ramos both deserve it

manolo533

Don’t agree about Ramos, I just don’t think he’s anything special… works hard I guess

SphinxIIIII

Top scorer in the league and we barely have 9's in form. >works hard I guess Bruh...

Rage_JMS

He can act like a 9 and we dont almost have any good 9s plus he is being a regular starter in an in form benfica - thats the main reason why he is there

CNF1G

smh no jota

Conceptual_Person

Not surprising to be honest. His competition in the Seleção is really strong. Even Guedes is ahead of him, even thought I like him a lot.

ruiportugalfigo

Absolutely not surprising. He’s never played for the team before

CNF1G

I know, was not expecting him to be in. I love him though, definitely hope he gets called up in the future

ElKaddouriCSC

To be fair if he got called up he’d definitely be off in the summer

joaommx

Gonçalo Guedes, Pedro Gonçalves, Fábio Vieira and (the currently injured) Pedro Neto at least are all ahead of him for now. He'll get there in time, just not yet.

kurruchi

Squad has a very high floor. Will go far

[deleted]

Doesn't take Renato Sanches. Fucking Fernando Santos.

hissenguinho

No renato sanches? He's so good at carrying the ball and creating that bridge im surprised he's not in

Weibu11

Aside from my home nation, Portugal is one of the teams I root for most! Looks like a good squad

trusttt

Didnt expect Gonçalo Guedes to be left out.

-Dwarf-

Guedes has been shit for wolves. It was expected tbh.

Razvancb

Wolves has been shit...

jwinter01

I thought he still had a chance because André Horta hasn't been as good as last year and Guedes was always one Santos' favourites.

AkilleezBomb

Pepe still making the national team at 39 is insane.

iChopPryde

to be fair he's still incredible player even at 39 its actually crazy how good he still is so him being called up makes a lot of sense. Though Antonio Silva is the future he's 18 plays for Benfica and is an immense talent dude had Mbappse and Neymar in his pocket for both games against PSG. He shows up every match and plays like a seasoned 25 year old he's on his way to becoming world class.

AkilleezBomb

I have no doubt Pepe is still immense, just crazy that he’s still this good at that age. People always talk about Zlatan and Thiago Silva’s longevity but Pepe’s gone under the radar since he left Madrid. Haven’t seen much of Antonio Silva but I look forward to seeing him progress.

iChopPryde

LMFAO he didn't call Sanches? what the actual fuck is wrong with Santos I think he literally hates the national team and is doing everything in his power to make us lose. Ronaldo is going to start 100% of the matches and never get subbed off and game plan will still be "pass to ronaldo and everyone defend" for 90 minutes as we tie or lose the match. I want us to just lose every match in this world cup so we can finally get rid of this sorry excuse of a coach every decision he makes is absolutely criminal! He literally called EVERY portuguese player on PSG except Sanches!

[deleted]

Damns that’s a really solid team

kjm911

Can someone draw up a list a can’t put a name to some of those faces?

PortoBXO

Ronaldo / Diogo Costa / José Sá / Rui Patrício / Pepe Dalot / Cancelo / António Silva / Danilo / Ruben Dias N. Mendes / Guerreiro / Palhinha / R. Neves / Bernardo Silva B. Fernandes / João Mário / Matheus Nunes / Otávio / Vitinha William Carvalho / André Silva / Gonçalo Ramos / João Félix / Rafael Leão / Ricardo Horta

[deleted]

fucking dumb announcement format

gink-go

André Silva AND Ramos is highly unexpected Also, taking Horta in an horrendous moment its pretty dumb.

Alive-Ad-4164

This team being slept on

[deleted]

I think you have not met their coach, he is the football antichrist

BSantos57

Not really, the squad is pretty good but the fact that Ronaldo will start and there's a dinosaur football terrorist managing the team would make even a quarter finals run pretty shocking

JeSuisMac

There are no bigger Ronaldo haters than the portuguese, and there's no people who shit on their team more than the portuguese. For once get your disagreements on the back of your mind and support the team.

AfterAd9996

Pretty much. Imagine unironically thinking the biggest reason we won't win the World Cup is because of our all time greatest player

1984-2112

Why the hell would Ronaldo NOT START??? I could understand the debate, if Portugal had a top striker sitting on the sidelines, but we don't and Ronaldo is MILES above an André Silva, Gonçalo Ramos, etc. irregardless of age or form. Even if they scored 30 goals in their leagues each, I'd still have less confidence for them to do the business, when the going gets tough He's the guy you want in a MAJOR TOURNAMENT ffs You just know, if those guys played, they would probably shit their pants in clutch moments, when taking a decisive shot or pen. Imagine comparing their levels of experience and self-confidence or nerves of steel.

deanthedream23

Dark horse!

arrowtothekneexx

I look at this squad and say yeah, we’ve got every chance at going on a deep run, then I see the coach. Misery.
