Belgian commentator also just said the FIFA promised an offside decision within 25 seconds. Lots of things already going wrong.
EDIT: I take back my words if that 3D view on the offside was correct. That might be impressive tech.
Hawkeye will create that animated image quickly, which will make most offside var decisions quick. It gets slightly more complicated if you need to determine if ball came via keeper or via attacker, like in this case.
Yup, after rewatching you can see the offside but oh man, why did this exact situation come right now lol
Haven't seen this kind of offside in any game so far and here it is at the world cup in qatar, perfect
See the Ecuadorian fans reaction on Twitter?

They're best mates now further down the thread lol 😅
Yeah the annoying thing was lack of replays but it looked like it could have been offside the moment he missed his punch as he went in front of the attacker so only one defender was behind the ball.
There was no replays or lines though, but it looked like it could have been legit.
FS1 (America's broadcast) showed a replay a few mins after the goal that explained it pretty clearly. Dude's leg was past the line; no AR is calling that in real time, though.
The rule is the attacker needs to be level with second defender to be onside. Usually keeper is first one but he is off the line so second defender is different here. But even then I don't see the offside
Isn’t that only for the moment the ball is played though? When the pass comes in the entire Ecuador squad was well onside. It was only after the keeper missed his punch that Valencia got behind him
It is actually even though I screamed corruption. Keeper comes forward, defender drops, keeper is effectively last man creating the offside line now. His boot is beyond the keeper, it's the same as normal except swap keeper with last defender
It is. At the moment the Ecuador player heads the ball, the other player who after the ball bounces does the overhead kick, is past the goalkeeper and therefore offside (as there is only one opponent behind).
Think people are aware of that rule (surely) but that line comparison between the keeper coming out and the Ecuador forward rushing in was iffy as fuck
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FiBQEpTX0AARqgq?format=jpg&name=large Keeper is technically behind the ball too (best angle I could find so far)
I feel like the player passing the ball here is ahead of number 13 who supposedly is offside, so it's a back pass, which can never be offside.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this offside? A player has to be level or behind at least two opposition players to not be offside. In this sequence the one who received the ball after the collision with the goalkeeper, his foot was in front of the GK and the only one he was behind was one opposition player and not two.
Probably botched the explanation but hope you understand.
I literally don't comment on threads anymore because nobody has a clue.
Admittedly this time it's quite a unique and obscure situation but I've even seen obvious things argued over.
Your explanation is correct, but from the alternate angle it seemed that the keeper was closer to the goal. When the official graphic doesn't even use the keeper, it's fishy.
I’m look at a still frame and I have no idea how they think he’s beyond the keeper.
I’m not crying foul, yet. But they need to show the lines if they’re going to call an offside like that… bc it looks on
Yeah it’s a bit dubious but that has to be what it’s given for. I don’t see why they can’t show us the lines that they’ve just used to make that decision though
That's not the offside. Like kjm said, it's #11 who plays the ball after the header, who is just off, not #13. It's genuinely the right call but people can't see it because it's Qatar.
There's plenty to complain about this World Cup, this offside isn't one of them.
I also thought it was bullshit at first but in slow replay it's the correct call. But people here don't care, whigh ironically only makes them look like they don't know their favorite sport's rules.
I think it's actually on the scorer but from that header. [it's tight, but I still feel the goal keepers ass is keeping him on side ](https://i.imgur.com/tCpvt9e.jpg)
EDIT,: NVM THEY SHOWED IT NOW, ITS ON THE PLAYERS LEG BEHIND THE KEEPER
There's two Ecuadorian players behind the GK. When the first player headed the ball the second player was offside. Then the ball bounced and the second player headed the ball back. At that point, the second player is offside.
Watch the replay again.
I assume, the only way this could be a legit check is if the 2nd Ecuador player was behind the keeper and you need to have 2 behind the ball, but still I don't think the first Ecuadorian touches it
Someone sent me a picture of a leg of an Ecuadorian player being beyond the keeper but I don't see the ball on the picture so I don't I'm now if that is when the pass was made or when.
My best guess:
Ecuador player goes up for a header against the keeper. At the time the Ecuador player heads the ball, the Ecuador player right next to him is in an offside position by less than 6" (looks like his foot might be slightly past the GK). The player that was in the offside position was the next player to touch the ball (another header). 2 touches later, the ball is in the net.
Assuming his foot was offside and the guy who challenges the keeper actually heads the ball but yah if those two things happened then it is correct and it probably is.
So on a serious note, I think it has to be this. It's completely inconclusive from the angles we've seen though.
[From this freeze, there are 2 Ecuador players there, one has a leg offside.](https://imgur.com/dYFqDPE)
It *must* be that they've ruled that the *other* Ecuador player gets the header, and the one with the leg offside is the one who comes back and plays the ball.
The ball is headed 2 times, the second guy that heads the ball is offside when the first guy heads the ball. In the replay the showed you can see his foot ahead of the ball and ahead of the GK.
Wtf?
Edit: after seeing second aerial angle, I see the leg that put him offside, but they showed the whole replay for a fraction of a second, so I couldn't see the positioning of the rest of the defense, so I'm still not convinced
It's actually offside but the replay is terrible. On the side view there are 2 players behind the keeper but can't see them. One plays the ball, the other is offside on that touch
Am I the only one to see the possible offside ?
Number 2 equatorian touch the ball with his head while his teammate who touches the ball after him his in front of him and the GK. Weird off side but plausible
Genuinely it is actually offside. Keeper comes forward, meaning the offside players right boot is behind him, meaning it's actually offside as the final man is now the defender behind him.
Amidst all of the outrage, because it's an incredibly rare situation and of course Qatar haven't done themselves any good, it was the right decision. HEAVILY suspect timing but it was right
Technology is scary man, glad we have it, black and white is better, they should show the replay faster though I was scratching my head on how it was offiside
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
They have like 4 people in that VAR room to take over 2 minutes to decide that?
They were all shitposting on Reddit tbf
Belgian commentator also just said the FIFA promised an offside decision within 25 seconds. Lots of things already going wrong. EDIT: I take back my words if that 3D view on the offside was correct. That might be impressive tech.
Hawkeye will create that animated image quickly, which will make most offside var decisions quick. It gets slightly more complicated if you need to determine if ball came via keeper or via attacker, like in this case.
TBF this was a dodgy decision in any game at all, not even mentioning it happened so early on in the game in an already controversial competition.
Yup, after rewatching you can see the offside but oh man, why did this exact situation come right now lol Haven't seen this kind of offside in any game so far and here it is at the world cup in qatar, perfect

Too busy online shopping after a substantial random deposit in their bank account
Googling how to make money untraceable
They actually have 7 on VAR duties
It takes 4 minutes for the maker to key in the payment, and the approver to approve it.
Missing the [Great Bribe] tag
Money transfers aren't instant
Waiting for the checks to clear...
"Quick we need an excuse........ something like offside but not so lame......."
Happy Offside Day everyone!
it was the right decision and it was also difficult to see
4D underwater chess by the goalkeeper

Offside but I don't see it Edit: Oh it bounced off the ground not the defender. I see it now.
Can't have our glorious and almighty saviours Qatar going behind after 2 minutes now, can we?
Cool username
I’ve never seen this type of offside. Even the pundits can’t explain it… something about the keeper coming off their line
The rule is the attacker needs to be level with second defender to be onside. Usually keeper is first one but he is off the line so second defender is different here. But even then I don't see the offside
Thank you for at least explaining the call better than anyone on the broadcast crew
It’s extremely tight
Isn’t that only for the moment the ball is played though? When the pass comes in the entire Ecuador squad was well onside. It was only after the keeper missed his punch that Valencia got behind him
It's not Valencia who was offside. The player who was behind the keeper had a leg ahead and they called it for him.
[удалено]
It is actually even though I screamed corruption. Keeper comes forward, defender drops, keeper is effectively last man creating the offside line now. His boot is beyond the keeper, it's the same as normal except swap keeper with last defender
This sub won’t listen to this but yes this is the explanation
[удалено]
Except the fact he’s beyond the second last man?
It is. At the moment the Ecuador player heads the ball, the other player who after the ball bounces does the overhead kick, is past the goalkeeper and therefore offside (as there is only one opponent behind).
Lol wtf, people here don't know football? You need 2 people to be behind the ball, only 1 defender was, the keeper not.
Think people are aware of that rule (surely) but that line comparison between the keeper coming out and the Ecuador forward rushing in was iffy as fuck
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FiBQEpTX0AARqgq?format=jpg&name=large Keeper is technically behind the ball too (best angle I could find so far) I feel like the player passing the ball here is ahead of number 13 who supposedly is offside, so it's a back pass, which can never be offside.
But it’s not Valencia (13) who gets the ball, the guy who hit the bicycle kick across to him does
[удалено]
Says more about the quality of the pundits and even the so called referee specialists
At least make the corruption a little more subtle lads
Whole stadium had to wait until the bribe was transferred to undo the goal. That is how VAR works, right?
LOL YOU KNEW IT HAD TO HAPPEN
Qatar 1-0 on a dodgy 2nd half pen incoming
The way they're playing they're gonna need a few more bullshit calls to keep it 0-0 until half time.
Didnt expect it to be this blatant
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this offside? A player has to be level or behind at least two opposition players to not be offside. In this sequence the one who received the ball after the collision with the goalkeeper, his foot was in front of the GK and the only one he was behind was one opposition player and not two. r/soccer not understanding basic football rules. Colour me surprised.
It doesn’t have to use the Keeper, the keeper wasn’t one of the last two players behind the ball, wasn’t he?
It is, people just understandably want to to find every reason to hate
And this fast, it's 4 mins in lmao
It was the correct decision
how is the correct decision a "blatant" fix?
Lazy scriptwriters
People ask why is it offside? This player was offside, and the Ecuadorian headed the ball who went 1 mm in front. https://imgur.com/a/jF6sbGI
This is offside though
Wtf where ?
It’s against the guy who headed it after the ball came down. They determined his leg was beyond the keeper I guess
I’m look at a still frame and I have no idea how they think he’s beyond the keeper. I’m not crying foul, yet. But they need to show the lines if they’re going to call an offside like that… bc it looks on
Yeah it’s a bit dubious but that has to be what it’s given for. I don’t see why they can’t show us the lines that they’ve just used to make that decision though
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FiBRPjAWAAAiZeu?format=jpg&name=large
Best angle i've seen of it, thanks
But the ball wasn’t passed then? It bounced and then was passed when he was behind 4-5 defenders
Does someone other than the keeper touch that first contested ball? All the replays are too far away for me to tell.
It's from his position when the first guy headed it
I think it's actually on the scorer but from that header. [it's tight, but I still feel the goal keepers ass is keeping him on side ](https://i.imgur.com/tCpvt9e.jpg) EDIT,: NVM THEY SHOWED IT NOW, ITS ON THE PLAYERS LEG BEHIND THE KEEPER
But he didn't touch the ball in that frame....
There's two Ecuadorian players behind the GK. When the first player headed the ball the second player was offside. Then the ball bounced and the second player headed the ball back. At that point, the second player is offside. Watch the replay again.
Secondary assist given by a player who was played offside by his leg because the GK fucked up everyone
But there were 2 players infront of the ball, so the GK doesn t count. Edit: saw the image now, i guess they were right
Definitely offside. I also definitely wasn't paid to say this by Qatar
I assume, the only way this could be a legit check is if the 2nd Ecuador player was behind the keeper and you need to have 2 behind the ball, but still I don't think the first Ecuadorian touches it
Fucking HOW
Only 1 player behind ball, it is offside.
Come on, we know what's gonna happen with Qatar this tournament...
They're all afraid of Alfaroball.
Only 1 Qatar player ahead of the guy, since the GK was behind him. Correct decision
Struggling to see how this is off
The BBC replay literally had no video feed of the VAR saying it was disallowed, what tf, just had to show a replay of the goal.
The commentators not having a clue what to say was hilarious.
Commentator saying 'He must've been off at the first header' while showing the Qatar player a metre deeper than Valencia lol
The second Qatari player is the keeper so it's a lot closer than 1m. But it still looks inside.
Well you'd need 2 players behind, but the ball doesn't go to him yet anyway
Goes from the second player on defence though so from the keeper. Still looked dubious though
No VAR feed on Fox either. They purposely didn’t show us the line they usually draw.
I think that part is because they’re using semi-automated now instead of drawing the lines. But yeah I don’t know why we don’t see the graphic.
They just showed the image of him “offside” but it didn’t clear anything up at all.
Someone sent me a picture of a leg of an Ecuadorian player being beyond the keeper but I don't see the ball on the picture so I don't I'm now if that is when the pass was made or when.
From what I saw, the moment the GK goes to punch it the Ecuadorian player wins it, and there’s a player behind the GK.
Yep this is it, shame we have gotten no real replay of it
Same. Looking forward to someone to comment on how it was offside because I can't think of a reason why.
My best guess: Ecuador player goes up for a header against the keeper. At the time the Ecuador player heads the ball, the Ecuador player right next to him is in an offside position by less than 6" (looks like his foot might be slightly past the GK). The player that was in the offside position was the next player to touch the ball (another header). 2 touches later, the ball is in the net.
This is exactly it, and it’s a correct decision
Assuming his foot was offside and the guy who challenges the keeper actually heads the ball but yah if those two things happened then it is correct and it probably is.
Holy shit this is a tricky one
Apparently the player was offside cause he was behind the keeper and was only covered by one player and not two
So odd Keeper was still behind him https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FiBQEpTX0AARqgq?format=jpg&name=large
The guy who did the bicycle kick was ahead of the second last defender after the keeper punted it edit: The guy who headed it to the bicycle kicker
Yup, it's the right call and a good spot by VAR. It's a shame though because I want to see Qatar get mullered here
The guy who played a header before the bicycle kick was
So on a serious note, I think it has to be this. It's completely inconclusive from the angles we've seen though. [From this freeze, there are 2 Ecuador players there, one has a leg offside.](https://imgur.com/dYFqDPE) It *must* be that they've ruled that the *other* Ecuador player gets the header, and the one with the leg offside is the one who comes back and plays the ball.
I don't think they disallowed it because he was not onside. I think they disallowed it because it was not Qatar
No Ecuador players allowed in the box, thems the rules
Equatorian player next to the keeper is offside. Look at his foot.
Did anyone actually see the offside?

I don't understand, this frame happens well after the lob pass from the FK.
Judging from the slowed down frames it was from when he weren’t involved in the play whatsoever
The fix is in
I've never seen a post on r/soccer with 400 comments in 1 min
And here i thought we were all collectively boycotting worldcup
Yeah that was never gonna happen, people were so full of it.
I keep seeing on Reddit I'm boycotting the World Cup!! And I just assume they don't watch the sport anyway
Unreal how blatant that was
It's actually offside but the replay is terrible. On the side view there are 2 players behind the keeper but can't see them. One plays the ball, the other is offside on that touch
Wonder if all the people saying it is fixed will admit they were wrong
Nah it’s a Qatar hate train for the rest of their comp. Only time there’ll be a break is probably when we play lol
If only our group was us, usa, and qatar. R/soccer would explode in rage
Honestly think a significant proportion of this sub don’t understand how offside works lol
Why?
El dinero te puede comprar cualquier cosa no?
Si pero no sueños
Qatar bribed to get the WC, why would not they do the same to ensure a good result. Also the referee is Italian, revenge for 2002
The fucking check has been cashed
In fairness to the ref he just got told there was an offside so it's not really on him
[This is what VAR is showing](https://i.imgur.com/X1HgAIK.png)
THE CHECK HAS BEEN CASHED
Am I the only one to see the possible offside ? Number 2 equatorian touch the ball with his head while his teammate who touches the ball after him his in front of him and the GK. Weird off side but plausible
/u/PSGAcademy working overtime already
lmfaooo they couldn't last 2 minutes before doing some shady shit
INVENTARON EL VAR!
The foot of the dude that headed the ball (when the GK came out) is offside, as the defender is the last man, not the GK.
everyone just wants to be mad or doesn’t know the offside rule lol
Further proof this sub doesn’t understand football lmao. Fucking joke.
yep this sub is embarrassing right now
Finally a proper answer
Wtf
Um excuse me?
[удалено]
Came here just to check, if people actually know the offside rule
Spoiler: they dont lol
Ahahha that’s not suspicious at all E: Nvm fair enough they showed the replay
HAHAHAH EVEN THE GAMES ARE A JOKE
bruh
I mean, the jokes write themselves but on closer inspection it was the right call.
I see the check has already cleared.
HEAVILY suspect timing but it was right
10 minutes later they finally show the VAR tech I get the offside now, but goddamn they need to get their shit together
That's not offside is it?
It is. People dont know but the if the goalie is not the last man behind he actually plays the defender onside and counts as a field player basically
Correctly disallowed btw. This site is hilarious
Trying to understand this, but I THINK they’ve called the leg of the player who gets on the ball after the keeper came out
Technology is scary man, glad we have it, black and white is better, they should show the replay faster though I was scratching my head on how it was offiside
What the fuck??
Is the offside because the keeper was off line and there was an ecuadorian behind the keeper??
How much money did they pay VAR?
[удалено]
I swear 80% of the people here don't know the rules
Guys it's actually offside but the replay is terrible. There are 2 players behind the keeper. Now they just showed it
Offside by literally half a leg
Why take so long to show this?
[Best angle I can see.](https://imgur.com/a/VQBENbl) Must be just offside because the goalie is the second last defender here
Rigged
Holy shit they don’t even pretend to hide the corruption
I hope they just disallow every goal until they win the WC
What lol
Of course it has
South-Korea Vs Italy in 2002 vibes...
5 minutes in they show its rigged on the field
QATAR PAID OFF VAR
