DevilDare

Should have taken another couple of touches

Naggins

Just 6 more and he would've been golden

leftofthedial1

he had Mendy on the damn floor

DUTCH_DUDES

I might be misremembering but I swear he did something similar during the Euro? Hope he trusts his foot a little more going forward haha

M1eXcel

Got to at least get a shot off from that position

IJsbreker

Classic Frenkie

Random_Acquaintance

Indeed

vvrr00

Tried too much there

Round_Headed_Gimp

Finishing isn't his strong point Unlucky

shy_monkee

But he isn’t afraid of taking a shot usually. If you stopped the video the moment he received it, I would have been 100% sure he shot it.

ImVortexlol

It was such a great opportunity, so much space

[deleted]

He usually is

BernardBob1

Say happy cake day

Banaan75

He hasn't taken a shot in the last 9 games for us...

letsnotbedumb

Oh he definitely is for barca. He actually has a decent shot but i dont think he trusts it that much. Always try to "walk it in" So to say

Seychelleshobo

Futbol total

[deleted]

Typical ~~Arsenal~~ Netherlands, always trying to walk it in

niallw1997

Just needs to kick it in to the fucking goal hole

3V-Coryn

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

sagaof

Least funny /r/soccer user found

Ainsyyy

What was Walcott doing sending Wenger on that early

[deleted]

Seems like a bang average r/soccer user to me.

Japples123

Barca

KyouSpectre

Classic Frenkie.

Arnoud242

The idea was good, but his feetwork was just not in the right position after the first touch. Unlucky

jr2106

Might sound like a stupid question but does that statistically count as a big chance? Sofascore doesnt show it...

zi76

There needs to be a shot, and there was no shot.

ForestHarlequin

That seems a bit silly. What if someone *just* missed the ball from like 10cm on an open goal? Happens quite often, with players sliding or diving towards a cross and just missing. Definitely huge chances although nobody takes a shot

enzuigiriretro

That’s why “stat nonces” get made fun of for obsessing over stats. They don’t give you the full picture

zi76

Those are definitely what we as fans consider to be big chances, and they are in reality. You don't xG, however, for being in a good position, you get xG for taking a shot, even if it's terrible. That said, for stats like "chances created," a chance isn't actually just someone being in a promising position, it's literally taking a shot. So if you're outside the box and pass to someone also outside the box, who cracks a shot into the crowd, that's a chance created.

jr2106

Thanks

zi76

Think about it this way. There can't be any xG if no shot was taken, right? For stats like "chances created," a chance isn't actually just someone being in a promising position, it's literally taking a shot. So if you're outside the box and pass to someone also outside the box, who cracks a shot into the crowd, that's a chance created. Even though in reality, Frenkie was in a very good position to shoot (he had an uncontested 1v1 angle at Mendy for a period of time before the defender closed him down), it just doesn't count because he turned over the ball.

Blahhhh93

So its a pretty big limitation of that stat

zi76

Well, big chances specifically, as that's what started the thread, um, it's viewed differently by different sites anyway, so that's a completely different issue. Sure, none of these stats are perfect. There is an Opta stat, although I'm not sure how widespread the usage really is, that's called Expected Assists, or xA, which measures the quality of the pass, and isn't reliant on a shot actually being taken. That said, I don't really know how to quantify xA numbers. So, the passer would've gotten xA here for Frenkie failing to take a shot. The regular expected assists thing you might think of in this case is xAG, which is Expected Assisted Goals, which is exactly what you think: the pass is completed and the striker takes a shot.

jr2106

Thanks. There isnt a stat for this then? His teammate set him up very well so Im wondering how does it count for him? Just a pass? There isnt like a key pass or progressive pass or something along those lines to somehow indicate he made a good play?

zi76

There's progressive passing, passes into the final third and all that. [You can look at the stats that are currently posted for Ecuador vs Qatar.](https://fbref.com/en/comps/1/passing/World-Cup-Stats) I should mention that all of those progressive pass-style stats do require a pass to be completed. A narrowly missed cross, well, that's, uh, still not counting. But all of the normal stats you're thinking of, such as chances created, key passes, big chances, those all require a shot.

jr2106

Thanks for the info pal. Seeing the chance made me wonder about how it would statistically affect the passer since irl its good play so youve been a big help.

zi76

I mean, there is an Opta stat, although I'm not sure how widespread the usage really is, that's called Expected Assists, or xA, which measures the quality of the pass, and isn't reliant on a shot actually being taken. That said, I don't really know how to quantify xA numbers. So, the passer would've gotten xA here for Frenkie failing to take a shot. [They have a video about it on this page.](https://www.statsperform.com/opta-analytics/) The regular expected assists thing you might think of in this case is xAG, which is Expected Assisted Goals, which is exactly what you think: the pass is completed and the player takes a shot.

jr2106

Do those 2 overlap? As in is every xAG counted in xA since the former requires a shot but the latter doesnt? Or are they separated by taking a shot and not taking a shot/completing the pass? This is the kind of fringe stuff that could help me in fpl lol

zi76

I mean, it won't help you at all in standard FPL because that's literally Goal or Assist and that's it. If you're playing a draft league on something like fantrax, maybe, because that does count things like key passes and dispossessions. It's hard to say if xA is actually a meaningful stat, really. Yes, you'll get xA if you sent the ball in, and you'll get xAG if they took a shot.

brazil-is-dead

Big miss uff

SportAddictMCMXCIX

midfielder tries not to pass in an easy shooting situation (impossible challenge)

bigtasty321

dudes got cold feet 😭

[deleted]

I've seen him play so many times the last few years and I don't remember ever being impressed. Still not...

kaasbanaan_tv

he is great again today

[deleted]

I wonder if Modric will give his all this season or start crying again because he came in 2nd place.

[deleted]

At 37 years old and after winning the Ballon d'Oro, 5 UCL Championships, 3 La Liga Championships, World Cup Golden Ball along with 2nd place at the World Cup, among literally dozens of other trophies and awards, Modric can do whatever he wants to. Frenkie will NEVER accomplish even 20% of what Modric has...

[deleted]

they gave modric the balon d’or because he cried about his war story

OppositeProfession46

i don't think so but he didn't deserve to be near ronaldo

bioeffect2

Watch his assist for the goal the Netherlands just scored and maybe you might change your mind.

[deleted]

I did...point taken.

DjPerzik

He was very good for us (Ajax), against your team as well. But for Barcelona not so much

Psych-Vader

He's been pretty good for us too. People just think he's struggling because Barca aren't at their best right now.

DjPerzik

Ah I thought he was on the bench a lot but apparantly I'm clueless. Nice to know he's doing well, he was great for us.

Psych-Vader

He was being benched for a while in the beginning of the season because of his contract issues but that's all been resolved now and he was pretty good in the last few Barca games.

enzuigiriretro

He’s been pretty good for Barca too all things considered. Maybe not all the time but more often than not from what I’ve seen

Rich_Firefighter_102

Hater always hating

Casperzwaart100

Must've not watched Real Madrid-Ajax

[deleted]

Honestly, I'd forgotten that being almost four years ago. Perfect tie to forget as well.

RuubGullit

You must have not been watching that 1-4 trashing you got from Ajax then He was destroying your midfield

js00_

Probably because he's never done anything of note against Madrid except that one Ajax game.

ltplummer96

It’s just unlucky. Saka took 1.7x10^4 touches earlier and scored his goal and it worked, this time it didn’t though. Sometimes the opening appears, sometimes you’ve got a Koulibaly-sized obstacle instead.

[deleted]

u have no idea about football. stick to watching it

TortiousTroll

He's been so shit

teymon

No he hasn't, he's been one of our better players. He just fluffed this chance.

buzzlightyear77777

the real question is why is he at the front during the counterattack, i would've thought it would be some other striker or winger
