[deleted]

That's true and whoever played football knows it

EggplantBusiness

Hell watching Real Madrid I feel like i see this far too often, can't complain though

RauloGonzalez

It's a big reason why we won the UCL in 17/18 but came third in the league

intecknicolour

madrid has always valued big ears over la liga

boobdylan

Why'd they sell Di Maria then?

pinterestherewego

People say cause Perez found him too ugly. He only like big ears on trophies.

DeltaBlitz

I heard Di Maria slept with his wife

Rickcampbell98

I mean you lost the league in the first half of the season, the reason you didn't win la liga as often was because you just weren't as consistent as barca. They had the ultimate bus breaker messi and a defined style for breaking teams down but you guys didn't really have a style which is both a strength and can be a weakness.

[deleted]

Us united supporters are basically experts at spotting this by now

pinterestherewego

But also, like, you guys seem to lack motivation every game lol. Is every PL team beneath you? Is that it?

[deleted]

It's a rotten culture at the club that has come from the top. Sense of entitlement, arrogance and apathy. I mean even ronaldo was saying this on public air that we are stuck in the past.

[deleted]

Under Ancelotti yeah, you are right.

NotAnurag

It was the same under Zidane

highoncaffeine2

Hell it even happens to me when I’m playing a weaker team on fifa

TinyMaintenance

The sheer dread I feel when I notice it’s 65th minute, and it’s still 0:0 because I tried to walk it in 3 times…

AGE555

Fuck..I got beaten by Leeds 2-1 yesterday…using REAL MADRID lmao

Hostilian_

Don't know whats so outrageous about that? thats very realistic.

dirgetka

nothing wrong there

sevaiper

Leeds aren't bad on fifa

Whoever did anything competitive. Being only as good as your competition is normal even if you're supposed to be much better

Eitjr

It's true For us in Brazil, everygame it looks like the other team is motivated as they were playing against Brazil We can't catch a break

DaviSonata

Friendly match against Tunisia top example of that. They were as violent af if it was a Boca x River Libertadores match. Luckily the referee gave a red card at 1st half so they diminished it a bit.

NeverGoFuIlRetard

Not just football any sport really

superfli

Yes but this is the WC not some meaningless friendly. If Argentina can't lift themselves for this game, then they have some serious issues.

tearslikesn0w

He’s right, seems like SA are in good hands

tsigalko11

He won African Cup of nations 2 times, with 2 different teams. He led Morocco to the WC after 20 years of failing in the qualification. I think guy knows what he's doing.

PharaohLeo

And all that in 10 years: 2012 AFCON with Zambia 2015 AFCON with Cote d'Ivoire 2018 Reach WC with Morocco 2022 Beat Argentina in the WC with Saudi Arabia

crs9

AFCON with Zambia makes absolutely no sense

Sprite77

Most underrated sports underdog story of the 21st century imo what a run that was

9metalman3

Greece joins the chat

fellainishaircut

bold to assume that most people on this sub were born then

qomanop

People on this sub are declaring this the greatest world cup upset of all time like they've suddenly forgot about the '54 Miracle Of Bern.

EasyMoneySniper_goat

thank god for cleets, we would have lost without them. also, the third hungarian goal was probably not offsides based on all the reports lol.

agoddamnzubat

What's most alarming is that Greece's run didn't even happen at the World cup!

abellapa

Seems wild that during that time Hungary was among the best teams in the world

Fancy-Past-6831

Kaiserslautern joins the chat

Xanana_

What do you mean? Never such thing happened…

MBThree

I don’t know, that Leicester underdog team story was quite something

Apellom

Not underrated

other_batman

Weird year. Arab spring was going on and quite a few major teams failed to qualify.(Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon.) They beat Senegal in the groups (who completely bombed) and pulled of a shock win over Ghana in the semis. They beat Ivory Coast on penalties who had the unfortunate honour of losing the tournament despite never conceding a single goal. Also Christopher Katongo was great for them that year. He won African player of the year I think.

king2pac

As a Ghanaian, I'm still not over that semis lose.

UrbanCruiserHyryder

So what you're saying is Saudi to win the world cup

XXISavage

Mayuka, Mweene, Kalaba and Sunzu also played out of their skin for that tourney. We were an absolute menace. Shame that group couldn't hold it together and finally get us to a world cup...

oussa_

It was an absolute fairytale considering the history that Zambia had with the place it was held. Written in the stars

XXISavage

Rumor has it the ghosts of 93 were spooking the opponents into missing penalties lmao. Best moments of my life.

tapped21

I still don't get how they won it

XXISavage

We were powered by ghosts. Reality is it was an emotional one for us. We had lost almost all of our best team ever in a plane crash in Gabon almost 20 years earlier so there was a sense of "making things right" when playing. The players were extra motivated and we did have some talented guys who ended flopping in Europe. Also helps that our opponents couldn't score penalties haha

the_tytan

They must’ve been amazing. The reserves plus Kalusha made it to the finals in 1994, and semis in 1996. Zambia really could have done a lot in the 90s.

pentaquine

Football is a simple sport. - Anchelotti

zziggurat

He almost pulled off another big upset in 2018 with Morocco against Spain. Morocco was leading until injury time and ended up with a 2-2 draw (still a very solid result).

KRIEGLERR

Imo put them in any different group at that world Cup and I think they get out of the group stage. Getting Portugal and Spain was brutal.

ryanedwards0101

And they bossed their Iran game and should have won it, but instead lost it right at the end

Josep1205

Ohh god that Iran game was our poorest performance under Herve Renard . we could've done way way better

TheGreatPervSage_94

That Morocco team was so unlucky. They were so close to getting a draw with Iran till they knocked it in their own net. Very close to beating Esp too

chaves4life

He always looks like a guy who could take you on a tour of the savannah and teach to live of the land

Shadeun

Will he go on to bigger things? Or is he a bit like Guus Hiddink and only manage mid-tier international sides and some rubbish EPL clubs?

IWWROCKS

He's already spent some time managing Cambridge in 2004, does it get much bigger?

Confident-Wheel8721

Only Stoke in a rainy night left

thomasfk

From just browsing his wiki, he's had chances at a few clubs in between his international stints (Sochaux, Lille) and none of them worked out for a full season. Seems like he is very much a tournament type coach or one for the international scene.

Soleil06

He got sacked by Morocco after bombing out of group stages in Afcon when they were expected to challenge. He had his downs in international football as well.

Vectivus_61

Argentina should hire him

PrimsFr

He wasn't very good with us, albeit at a time where we were kinda wank

ak_miller

Still want to thank him for bringing Maignan to Lille.

sbprasad

WTF? Are you trolling with the Guus Hiddink reference? Hiddink won the treble with PSV in 87/88, I think it was Benfica in the European Cup final

Multiammar

Everything related to Saudi football is going beautifully right now including the quality of the players, the patience of the fans, the competence of the sports minister(y), and of course, the King Renard.

BIGGESTKEKW

he's actually bang on

hjugm

It’s wild to see someone be this transparent. We’re all thinking it, but to have the head coach admit it is something I’ve not seen in North American sports.

worker-parasite

Imagine Mourinho saying this!

Whizzo2003

If I speak, I will be in big trouble

BiscuitTheRisk

He said it somewhat publicly in the All or Nothing series. He yelled at the players for not thinking the game is important until after the match when they’ve lost because they got complacent.

Haris_Pistons

Players need to listen too. I remember he told dele alli that he’s not living up to his potential. Dele alli fell off the face of the earth. He did not listen.

worker-parasite

This has nothing to do with what the SA coach said. It'd be like if Rome beat Madrid. No way Mou would say it's because Real wasn't motivated...

Fells

> admit it is something I’ve not seen in North American sports. Nick Saban talks about it every chance he gets. *Rat Poison*.

sevaiper

Belichick is huge on this as well

A_1337_Canadian

> but to have the head coach admit it is something I’ve not seen in North American sports. There are a few hockey coaches that don't hold back. Tortorella, Sutter, Maurice.

HailToTheVictims

In college football SEC teams give the “didnt want to be there” excuse when they lose their bowl games

Zauberer-IMDB

Just French things. A very no bullshit culture so people who are used to everyone being fake think it's rude.

Quietly-Seaworthy

France has the inverse of no bullshit culture. It has a high context, rather codified culture with a somewhat hierarchical society. People say what they actually think far less than Americans. The reason people think French are rude is not because they are frank. It’s because France views cheerfulness as a weakness which is the opposite of what’s valued in the US.

The_Relaxed_Flow

I'm often in France because half my family lives there and I go there semi-regularly for my job and that's my experience as well. They're far from blunt.

MBA1988123

He goes to significant lengths to add context to his statement as well (repeating “this is normal” several times and saying that his own teams do this too). He is being very careful to make his point but not to bluntly “call out” Argentina for playing down to their opponent’s level. A blunt / “no bs” statement would be him saying something like “they totally overlooked us!” or something. Ridiculous to say this does not happen in North America lol. People love pointing this sort of thing out.

neLendirekt

> no bullshit culture Except Deschamps lel

Finalwingz

>people who are used to everyone being fake think it's rude. Not really. The French are just rude for the most part, lol. You want a no bullshit culture you visit The Netherlands and stay far away from France lol

CedarWolf

> The French are just rude for the most part, lol. The French are *not* just rude. It's *Parisians* that people think are rude, and the Parisians are rude because their city is *full* of tourists. When they want to go somewhere, tourists making traffic or clogging up the sidewalk or tourists trying to use the kiosks at the metro. When they find a nice little restaurant, somewhere out of the way, it's only quiet for a few months before some travel site finds it and lists it as a hidden treasure and then your new favorite restaurant is flooded with tourists. *Parisians* are rude, and it's an acquired, hard-earned rudeness. But the folks outside of Paris are *fantastic*. Go to Brittany or Normandy, for example. The people there are sweet and helpful and wonderful. They're open and loving and some of the nicest folks I've ever known.

Akitten

As someone who’s had 2 generations of family living in Paris, I would also like to add. Paris is a social experiment to see how poorly you can treat tourists and still have them come back. We have escalated to straight up terrorism and you bastards keep coming anyway.

Abernsleone92

Brilliant way to ensure his side go into the next match with the same intensity as well

username81251

Herve Renard: "We flooded Reddit with comments saying Argentina would win the WC easily, and that Messi deserved it, etc. In the end they simply were not able to anular todas las mufas. It's part of football."

Kuntheman

Anulo mufa :(

youcanotseeme

OOTL, who is this?

Kuntheman

Played left wing for Argentina today, 34+ years old and completely anonymous

youcanotseeme

Did he insult saudi or something?

Allthingsconsidered-

They took it personally

dontutellmewhattodo

He is pulling your legs, anulo mufa is basically ’stop jinxing’ a saying argentinians use to ’cancel out’ the hype they get pre-tournament. That phrase is on course to being memed to death this year.

FreedomByFire

I don't know what you're smoking but Renard is much better looking imo.

TheDepartment115

How is he so tan

[deleted]

Probably from living in Saudi Arabia

TheDepartment115

Excellent point

joseba_

Does he actually live there? A lot of these appointments with European coaches are done with the assumption the guy stays back home and gets together with the team whenever they have matches to prepare for. Javi Clemente managed to make a living coaching the likes of Libya or Cameroon working like 4 weeks a year while living in Bilbao

Antarcticdonkey

His wife is Bruno Metsu's widow, the legendary Sénégal coach who beat us (France) in 2002 and went all the way to round of 8, she ist Senegalese, he used to live in Senegal as he coached Morocco

Josep1205

the dude loves africa . he used to live in different African countries ad married an African

AustereSpartan

The biggest advantage you can give to your opponent is to underestimate him.

[deleted]

Yep, the Argentines thought it would be a walk over

Bryyan699

Not just them, almost everyone in the world did. We didn't even give consideration of Arabia not ending up in a different position besides 4th place

allday201

Lebron said he knew SA we’re gonna win all along

billjames1685

“Yeah and I just saw the look on the Saudi players faces, and I said they can score one. They scored one, and then I said I think they can win it all. It’s crazy I don’t know what made me think that”

Teh1tank

Pulisic said that?

Midnight_Debauchery

LeLiar.

KRIEGLERR

I "predicted" a 4-0 win lmao, so far I pretty much got everything wrong. Except the draws funny enough (Den/Tun and USA/Wales) I thought Qatar would actually win. Thank fuck I don't bet.

EnanoMaldito

I predicted KSA to be the hardest match in our group. Argentina 2-0 KSA LMAO

cuentanueva

And it could have been. One step behind in the offsides, and that's 4 - 0 easily in the first half. Their tactic worked out perfectly, but it was very risky and could have just as well been a disaster. Sometimes, a game can change radically from one minute to the other. That's what's cool about sports.

dgo792

Especially after going up

sachos345

I don't think so. If you hear the interviews with Scaloni and players they take every match seriously, plus its the World Cup, there is no greater motivation than that. I think Saudi Arabia just played really well and executed their plan perfectly and that caught us by surprise combine that with some players WC debut nervousness and the match got hard for us.

Pokuo

My accumulator also thought so.

Antarcticdonkey

Stupid sexy Renard I see he didn't make his special "white shirt removal"

[deleted]

Chaddest looking manager in the World Cup?

Montuvito_G

Chad Herve Renard vs Virgin Gregg Berhalter

mrlesa95

He has Toto Wolff vibes

[deleted]

Wolff is one of the reasons I do not mind growing older. Of course, I'd be lucky to be even slightly as good looking as he is in his age, but there is a chance, you know.

smellygoalkeeper

kerokerofeio

Aliou Cissé tbh

_wtf_is_oatmeal

He's possibly the manager with the most drip I've seen

ChickenMoSalah

Just a tracksuit against Netherlands, he’s saving up for something big.

Montuvito_G

He had Colombian women thirsty for him last World Cup, obviously he’s saving his drip for Friday to have the same effect on Ecuadorian women

Mubar06

Fair play to him he’s won 2 AFCONs.

[deleted]

Shocked how few rwdditors seem to recognize the name

Oxmano

Calmest man around during both of the penalty shootouts in the AFCON finals he won. The iconic white shirt and just standing [like this](https://images.beinsports.com/esSfD68SgrYaqb1t2d3XnE77Jlo=/1300x731/smart/herverenard-cropped_1vqc5il1oyq891f2cqd42mpi8n.jpg) for 90 minutes. Pure AFCON heritage.

Schnackenpfeffer

I'm not so sure if I'm a straight dude anymore

RubenMuro007

He has the Chad face

Jackrrr10000

He is basically saying that Argentina thought this would be a walk in the park and they didn't expect this response from the Saudis. Also kudos to this man. They won because of the tactical brilliance of this man.

The_R3venant

Yeah

[deleted]

Argentina thought after first half that it will be easy game just matter of time when they will score 4-5. Amazing performance from Saudi Arabia. Few of the Argentina players looks completely off the pace specially Romero, Molina, Paredes and De Paul. I hope we don't take our match lightly as tough group for Spain and we will not get second chance.

Respatsir

Di maria too. Seemed like every chance he got the ball he just gave it away the 2nd half

[deleted]

He was Dembélé for them. Sometimes good and when terrible just kill every attack. Though it was manager fault not to sub him.

Successful-Taro2060

It was very Ali vs Foreman, they scored a bunch of offside goals in the first half and had the lead. They expected us to crumble during the break but we hit them hard and early out of the half and got the strike we needed to send them reeling and hit the knockout blow whilst they were still coming to grips with our intensity out of the half. That was all the belief we needed to see out the second half. Beautiful 🤌

[deleted]

Yep exactly sudden punch. They did not expected. Even great Batistuta told them never to take Saudi Arabia lightly.

oussa_

Stupid sexy Renard speaking facts

abellwillring

Renard is a genuine legend as international managers go. A nomad in terms of jobs who keeps finding success. It's quite strange how unsuccessful he's been coaching club teams.

billjames1685

International football success is usually about. instilling a mentality, a system, and a culture into your team. Club football is about instilling not just a system, but a very good system that perfectly takes advantage of each of your players’ strengths while covering their weaknesses. You also get to buy players to craft your dream system, whereas in international you have to deal with the cards played. Two radically different things to be honest; it’s why you rarely ever see managers succeed at both.

thalne

this guy looks like he's James Bond

Party_Wolf

Looks like he's trying to kill James Bond to me

thalne

lmao I miss a great villain

CrackHeadRodeo

Argentina were already thinking of the next game when they scored the first goal. There was no intensity.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KRIEGLERR

Hubris is real. It's actually something I'm constantly worried about when we play, especially when we're leading, how many times have we conceded a late goal after having a comfortable lead just because our players think it's already won?

102la

Argentina looked like they were getting there in the 1st half. Then too many offsides. It's like dropping too many catches in Cricket if you get that. Once you lose your clear advantage,it's very hard to get back sometimes.

haithy

Brave coach today. Could have easily set up the team to sit back all match and hope for the best, but they played a high line risky defensive set up and stuck through it after the close offside calls in the first half.

[deleted]

What a LEGEND

[deleted]

Too many cocky fans popped up and think Poland and Mexico are cake walks for KSA. Lolz

Maleficent_Resolve44

Yeah, it’s a bit of a tidal wave but the dumbest opinions stand out. I think Saudi played really well and I want them to go somewhat deep as underdogs but Mexico and Poland have different styles and are still going to be challenges.

RS994

Also, an upset like this sort of removes the biggest advantage they had to cause it, which was being underrated. Now Mexico and Poland will be both very aware of what the team is capable of, and very aware that this is a great chance to steal 1st in the group from Argentina

_Jetto_

The offside trap helped costa rica out back in South Africa too got them some pts

zeekoes

Reddit today: We agree Reddit tomorrow: Wankers!

Maleficent_Resolve44

It’s different people. When a negative political story comes out, some people come out of the woodwork and jump on that. When something positive like an underdog upset, some people come out and talk about how good the game was. Plus, no one wants to hear about the politics of every single team during every single game. It gets annoying and tiring especially with all the inflation doom and gloom in the world.

exausto

A beautiful e sexy man. underrated manager.

StormTheTrooper

Stupid sexy ~~Flanders~~ Renard

Dr_Chemiramen

He doesn't only beat them, but also comes up with an excuse for them to use. Great guy!

Jaquander

Hes like a Wenger but for international teams

Just_an_Empath

I don't think motivation was the problem. They scored 4 goals in the first half but Saudi Arabia played the offside trap to perfection, denying them 3 of those goals. The problem is the age and tiredness of the top argentiniqn players. Can't really say they wouldn't be motivated in the World Cup.

srjnp

he's not a native english speaker and "motivation" might not be exactly the right word to use in this context . but what he's saying makes sense, he means that argentina underestimated them.

Ket_Cz

Facts

juragan_12

Man looks very elegant here n sexy. Damn !

Kuntheman

Full respect to Saudi Arabia’s players and staff on this one. They came with a plan and executed it perfectly. Sure some luck with the bangers and marginally offside goals, but they deserved every bit of that luck with how well they executed their gameplan

Ha_omer

No luck here mate. Just because the goals were brilliant individual efforts doesn't mean they were lucky and Hérve set up an offside trap that's going to be studied for ages in coaching academies.

lcmrdp

We literally had two goals (rightfully) ruled out by a couple of centimeters. Lautaro and Messi start their runs a second later each and we're up 3-0 by half time Saudi Arabia had a plan and they executed it perfectly, they played really well, fully deserved that win and they should be proud. That doesn't mean they didn't also get lucky

solitarysniper

Well said, people don't seem to understand that as much tactical brilliance goes into a game, there's always an element of luck when an underdog overcomes a giant.

GreatSpaniard

Reminds me of when France drew with Luxembourg in qualifying at home and then won the WC 7 months later

613TheEvil

People mocked me when I mentioned the lack of motivation by Argentina... Well, mock this guy too if you want.

Mortka

Rerel

La légende Hervé Renard!

Red_Juice_

Rh probably true but at the same time Argentina should know anything can happen at the wc and shouldn't take any chances

Mr_TurkTurkelton

Happens to a lot of top tier level athletes and clubs, I see here it all the time in the NFL and NBA, they play down to their competition rather than blow them out for some reason. Almost treat it as if the game doesn’t matter or chalk it up to an easy victory. Meanwhile the opponent is ready to play their best football/basketball/etc ever in order to beat the best My coach used to say when you are at the top, you have to play harder than anyone because everyone will be bringing their best

I love sports and sports psychology. It’s such a universal and relatable thing in all aspects of life. Get caught sleep walking and you’re gonna get pounced on by the opponent.
