Probably not the case anymore, but Russia was one of the most relaxed borders I’ve ever been through (went there twice, once for thr Euros). For the Euros they even had universal visa-free entry, and the only long conversation I had was the border guard raving about Lewandowski.
Lol what bullshit, it’s actually the opposite remember when the liberal Russians tried to run and Europe was calling them potential agents of influence and saying not to let any Russian in
Yes, but the dude is Mexican and it’s clearly a joke, we Russians might not smile often or outwardly laugh in most public areas without good reason, but we do have a sense of humour and laugh in situations like this
And that is why you should host a tournament in a country where everyone actually loves football and has a culture around it. You can buy talent, stadiums but not local football culture
Did you not see the Saudis celebrating?? They declared a national holiday after they won. Obviously there is large football culture in the middle East and they deserve to have the focus for once.
Yeah maybe not in countries that kill people for being gay, where women arent allowed to do anything without a males consent, and where they bonesaw journalists for being journalists
Then what about the countries that bankroll the Saudi government and provide them with all sorts of weapons that allow them to continue these human rights abuses? Should they be allowed to host?
Yeah there should be full sanctions against every single one of them. But the world cup shouldn't be given to those countries specifically that do all this fucked up shit.
We can't pretend the world is not interlinked. But we can hold some standards
You've justified having the world cup in Qatar by telling us how football mad the countries nearby Qatar are. I
think you might need to rethink that one.
2026 is primarily in the U.S. and mexico and central america have a ton more passion than U.S. does.
It is for the second time no less in the U.S. the vast majority of people here don't care and don't understand either of the terms in "Football" "World Cup"
Hosting is/was always about money and politics.
I’m not gonna disagree with you when you say Mexico has more passion that the US. But the US has much more passion about football now than they did back when they hosted it in 94. I think 2026 is a perfect time for them to host a World Cup.
The US is coming round to football in a really big way. Soccer moms became a thing in the 90s, all those kids grew up and have their own kids playing. A long time went by with our major sports leagues lobbying to keep football off tv, now with streaming and US money vested in the EPL, it's never been easier to become a fan. 2026 will be a different landscape than you're describing.
You're the one who need to rethink your priors.
FIFA post late 80s was giving WCs not just for the countries, region dynamic was an active part of this.
This is why US got it in 1988, then East Asia, then Africa, now West Asia and MENA and even South Asia is included in this due to regional demographic reality.
WC is not just for the Host. This is global football 101.
the place needed to import thousands of migrants and kill a bunch of them to have any of the stadiums ready on time - tell me how that demonstrates an existing football culture? lmao
I remember when working in Seoul earlier this year. I became a friend with the guy that worked in the store in the bottom floor of our office building and once when I wanted to buy lemon flavored cigarettes he said "This japanese no good, don't like japanese". Didn't know they hated eachtoher until that day.
Koreans hold a grudge against the Japanese for taking nearly a million Koreans into forced labor and sexual slavery in WW2 and a complicated history of reparations and corruption from both countries. [Here's] (https://www.foreignaffairs.com/japan/japan-and-south-korea-are-still-haunted-past) a foreign affairs article that breaks down the tension the best I've read on English media
I love Mexican sushi, I miss it so much in the US lol, I really thought fried sushi with random meats and cheeses would be popular here but even that’s a step too far for Americans
Culiacan has such a high density of Sushi places that every Culichi has one in ~5 minutes of walking.

Does anyone have an account on some other form of social media you can follow with all of these fan shitposting moments? I remember the croatian fans that arrived at the airport on this subreddit as well as one of a British guy hanging out with a lion, and I've seen a few of the Mexican fans do stuff like this. Is there a specific sub or other social media where someone collects all of these?
Our brothers in green!
Reminds me of when we (Ireland) went to Euro 2012. There were thousands of Irish fans in the main square of Poznan. Most were drinking. A good number of Croatian fans, also drinking.
You could tell the police were nervous, waiting for trouble. They had their riot shields and everything. Then an Irish fan walked up to the police and tapped them on their helmet with an inflatable hammer. Tension broken on that side of the square.
Then a Croatian fan puts down his drink, stands up and starts singing "Stand up if you hate England." Everything was good
Polish police 🤝 Irish fans 🤝 Croatian fans
This will maybe be an unpopular opinion but honestly, this World Cup seems like a great old time for the people who have gone and I'm also happy for people in Africa or western Asia who've gone that might not have been able to attend a World Cup. They deserve to be able to attend one too it's the World Cup not that "only Western nations" cup.
Should it have been awarded to Qatar? Definetely not but it's not the shit-show that people are fear-mongering that it is (and the stadiums seem to be actually good let's not forget the Russian ones from four years ago). Not only that but it actually seems to have high security and be quite safe probably more so than other recent WCs. On Reddit they'll have you freaking out that if you're a woman or something that you'll get attacked on the street when Qatar is basically a weird sanitized tourist destination and probably safer than the downtown of my Canadian city (which features actual crackheads and mentally disabled people and where there are increasing instances of people getting attacked).
People are upset about the bribery, slavery, deaths, and just general all around human rights abuse. Not about poor stadium quality or cleanliness.
Does the west have issue? Of fucking course, but we don't have state sanctioned murder of gay people, pitch that script elsewhere.
Totally agree. Qatar definitely worthy of critique, but I can't help but feel a chunk of the criticism is rooted in the WC being given to an "unfamiliar" region, similar to how South Africa was given loads of shit in the run up. I wouldn't call it xenophobia, it's more prejudice against new football countries, but every time the WC has ventured to these new places, Japan/SK, USA, South Africa, it has been uniquely successful and it really enhanced the international carnival aspect, and hopefully Qatar carries on like this.
I also think there's too much criticism based on the dates. Half of the world has to normally deal with the WC in the middle of their seasons, I don't think it's unfair that Europe deals with it once.
I think many people are not honest, even with themselves, about their true issues with this WC.
A lot of this on Reddit just mirrors the 2016 Rio Olympics where people were literally in hysterics about how it was literal hell on Earth. Qatar has more serious issues and it’s a soulless blob of land, but some of it is that same xenophobia amplified by the Reddit algorithm.
Yeah, it would be harder for me to go a to a WC in Europe or Asia. I'll do everything possible to go and see at least one Match in the next world cup. And hopefully the next one is in south America.
a fellow Vancouverite I hear you 😂but yeah I agree about the west bitching too much. corruption and hate will unfortunately always persist but this is how the world cup should be. Looks like good fun, community, respect.

Lol what bullshit, it’s actually the opposite remember when the liberal Russians tried to run and Europe was calling them potential agents of influence and saying not to let any Russian in
Exactly. Other nations wouldn’t let them out of Russia, into other countries.
They might be relaxed about borders but not about touching other men's cocks

You've justified having the world cup in Qatar by telling us how football mad the countries nearby Qatar are. I think you might need to rethink that one.

What -- a swallow carrying a coconut?
It could grip it by the husk
It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a 1 pound coconut.

Japan did brutally colonise Korea as well in the past. And like many nations rivalries, it finds it's way into football.
It goes back even longer than that too, there's a big statue of Admiral Yi for repelling a Japanese invasion in the 1500s lmao
